Hi, Charwoman Gene here, (she/her, Char or CG for short). I've decided that unless I force the situation I will never get this done.
I'm looking to start up a campaign set in a updated, homebrewed version of Spelljammer for 5e. The campaign will be open ended, but start at 1st level with rapid milestone advancement to 3rd.
The campaign will start on an asteroid city in orbit around a fairly standard D&D fantasy world, mostly clueless to the goings on above them, and if things go according to plan, you'll have a ship to use by level 3.
You do not have to be familiar with Spelljammer to play. In fact, I'm going to ask each character to choose and state explicitly if they are a "groundling", born on the planet below, a "rockborn" native to the asteroid, or a "spacer" who has been born and raised in space civilization and had significant space travel.
I'd prefer players of rockborn and spacers to have at least basic familiarity with Spelljammer, or at least read an article on it like this one.
I'm going to be up front, this may take a little to get off the ground. but should be fun.
As I have to home brew some races and backgrounds, I'm asking the potential players to hold off on mechanically creating characters until after I';ve selected them.
Application: Character Name and pronouns: (Optional)Player pronouns and preferred name: Race: Class: Origin: Backstory/Description: Frontstory:
Application Notes: Races: Wide Open, I'll even accept Tasha's custom lineage for unique races (not better elf than elf). Rockborn and spacers can use these.
Classes: Official WotC Classes only. No CR stuff, especially blood hunters.
Origin: Groundling, Rockborn, or Spacer. I will likely be looking for a mix along the lines of 2 of each, but depends on how I like the characters. Groundlings should give me a rough idea how they got to the rock. Captured/enslaved, paid passenger, swindled as labor, what have you. If it was any kind of captured you are free now if you like.
BS/D: 2-3 sentences at most roughly giving an idea of who your character is and where they come from.
FS: 1-2 sentences roughly saying where you want to go.
Name: Well, it roughly sounds like this: Shhhlr'aSHOOSH. This name, of course, cannot possibly be translated into the language of tongue-bearing creatures, so they instead go by the name of Ξ, pronounced "Xi." (You can just type Xi instead of Ξ when referring to the character, I just think it's fun so I'm going to do it, I want to make things as easy as possible.) Pronouns: He uses any pronouns, and often shifts how he physically presents herself to fit how she is feeling at any given moment. Since gender isn't as much of an issue for giant amoeba-creatures, they don't really care which pronouns people use. Player Name/Pronouns: You can call me Humbug, The Funny Fellow With All Those Limbs, that guy, yeah, you know who I'm talking about, that one, Sir Dr. Gregory K. Samuels, Esq., or any number of insults as long as they're clever enough. As far as pronouns go, I, like Ξ, use any pronouns. Race: Little Squishy Plasmoid Lad Class: Rogue (Going arcane trickster) Origin: Spacer Backstory: I wrote out something much longer, then reread the first post and discovered the 3 sentence maximum, so I'm just going to put the longer backstory in a spoiler since I don't want to just delete all that writing. Anyways, Ξ used to be part of a pirate crew under their sibling-parent, Ђ (Dje), who was exiled from the deGleash for a crime unknown to Ξ and underwent mitosis shortly after. They sailed Wildspace for many years, but Ξ eventually left the crew by force, when she was knocked off the deck by the tail fluke of a Kindori the crew was attacking. They fell through Wildspace for a short while before ending up stranded on an asteroid, and were eventually picked up and dropped off on the asteroid the adventure begins on.
Ξ is a Plasmoid of the deGleash genus, but is not associated or familiar with them, as her sibling-parent had left them before he underwent mitosis and Ξ was formed. Her sibling-parent, Bshooar'ASHH (Ђ, pronounced "Dje," among tongue-bearers) wax exiled from her people for a crime they never spoke of, but considering that the Plasmoids are generally rather forgiving folk, it had to have been something bad. He never spoke of his crime, and though Plasmoids share a connection to their sibling-parents greater than those of fleshed folk, since they were once one body and one mind, Ξ was never able to figure out just what Ђ had done. That memory had not been copied during interphase.
Ξ came into singular existence on the deck of a small spelljammer, Ђ having mingled with another Plasmoid (whom she never spoke of) some years prior, and deciding that they needed another hand on the ship at that moment. After escaping their native crystal sphere, passing through the Phlogiston to another one foreign to them both, they sailed Wildspace for many years together. Ξ mostly worked on the ship, repairing it when necessary, occasionally even piloting it when Ђ only needed them to keep it steady. Ђ handled the piloting during their... interactions with other ships. These interactions were... well...
They were piracy. There, it's been said. The two of them were pirates. Well, it was mostly Ђ, really. Ξ wasn't allowed to ever join in, even when more fleshed beings began joining the crew. Eventually, however, Ђ began to get more and more ambitious. As the crew grew, he felt indomitable, and Ξ, though she was his sibling-child, did not speak up. She viewed them rather reverently, almost as a hero. He still does, in a way. Eventually, Ђ made a terrible mistake, in attempting to attack a barbarian clan that lived on the back of a Kindori. It was pointless, more a test of the strength of the Delirium (their ship) and their crew.
Ξ didn't manage to see how the battle ended, but she saw how it started: a massive tail fluke, bursting through their bubble of atmosphere, smashing into the deck, sending Ξ sailing off the edge and into darkness. They didn't fly for long, it couldn't have been for more than an hour or else he would have suffocated, but it was long enough for him to lose sight of the Delirium. She was stranded for a long while, until a passing spelljammer found and picked her up, eventually bringing them to the asteroid where the campaign begins, where they have lived for a short while.
Description: Ξ's form varies widely, from shapeless blob to vague person-shape. When relaxed and around people he trusts, however, he typically takes this form:
Frontstory: Ξ wants to find their sibling-parent, Ђ. They currently view her as a hero-like figure, even if they really aren't, and hopefully somewhere down the line Ξ will become disillusioned and will instead strive to outdo Ђ, rather than emulate him.
Character Name and pronouns: Elmira the space pirate! (she/her)
(Optional)Player pronouns and preferred name: Yoman or Chris is fine. (he/him)
Race: Tiefling
Class: Bard
Origin: Born on the ground, but having grown and matured in space. Groundling/Spacer I guess?
Backstory/Description: Elmira is the daughter of space pirates, having had travelled with them for years, although she is no pirate herself. In fact, she never robbed or killed or even hurt as much as a fly. She enjoys the music and the calm of travel, the stars and their brilliant colours.
The tiefling, while originally a groundling, has been abducted from a very young age by a weird sort of bunch: space pirates they call themselves; humans, orcs, dragonborn even. Roaming the darkness of space has been their calling, but so was thievery and violence. To them, however, Elmira has always been their sweetheart, their crown's ruby.
Frontstory: Since her coming to age, Elmira has been offered the liberty to roam the space on her own. Her adoptive father, Hansel the crude, has been teaching her how to protect and care for herself and has since deemed her ready to embark on 'a trip that would change her life'. Dropped in the vastness of the space, Elmira has been ever so searching for her first adventure. Anywhere would do.
Player pronouns and preferred name: Khorne (He/Him)
Race: Grung
Class: Bloodhunter
Origin: Groundling
Backstory/Description: A worldweary toad who has dedicated his life to avenging his people, who were tragically boiled when a meteorite struck their wallowing pool. Believing this to be a concerted effort by an imagined collective of space rocks, he has adopted the forbidden magics of their long spoiled history to give him an edge he will desperately need when hunting an overwhelmingly numerous opponent in an extremely hostile environment. Indeed; space is no place for a toad, but Alusys will brave the absence of elements to see the devious space rocks brought low.
Frontstory: Whilst leading an entirely hopeless and tragically misinformed crusade against the personification of the inherit unfairness of existence, I hope for him to be freed of the ignorant pursuit of vengeance, and to learn acceptance through understanding.
Early ruthlessness in the hunt leads inevitably to selfish acts, and recovery from that downward spiral over time - vengeful nature revealed to be his unhealthy method of dealing with loneliness, abated by friendships forged along the adventure.
Character Name and pronouns: Krast Fulgarn (He/him) Player pronouns and preferred name: He/him, Spiderwrangler, Spider or SW Race: Scourge Aasimar Class: Aberrant Mind Sorcerer Origin: Rockborn Backstory/Description: Krast grew up human, to a merchant family, and it was only after he was aboard a cargo ship returning from procuring inventory when that changed. He remembers only cries of warning, and a blazing radiance as the ship was struck by dazzling light, next thing he remembers was waking up in the infirmary, where they reported that he was the lone survivor of the crew. His skin no longer grows hair, and he's become more gaunt in appearance, but the strangest is how his eyes and mouth sometimes flicker with luminous light, as a result, he wears a mask much of the time. Frontstory: Since 'The Incident', he has heard voices, and can do things that he could not before. What was once a comfortable existence has become smothering, and he seeks off this rock, to see what more is out there.
Character Name and pronouns: Fenly Tasslehoff - he/him Player pronouns and preferred name: He/him, Volcano/Vol/VolcanoLair Race: Stout Halfling Class: Barbarian Origin: Groundling Backstory/Description: Fenly was a farmer, just like generations of his ancestors before him. He grew up at home in the outdoors, tending animals and harvesting crops. But one day whilst looking for a runaway calf, he stumbled upon a cave where he found the skeletal remains of a large wolf. He had the unstoppable urge to touch the skull, and as he did so he felt the animal spirit enter him. From then on he started to have bouts of intense anger. Struggling to contain this feeling, he thought it best to leave, and get as far away as possible from those he cared about and the cave itself. He lived a secluded life for a while, but he eventually heard about opportunities to travel far away, and took one of them, not realising exactly how far that would be. Frontstory: He wants to understand what happened to him, and learn to control the anger that builds in him, as well as come to terms with this whole new 'world' he finds himself a part of.
Character Name and pronouns: Hammer (he/they) (Optional)Player pronouns and preferred name: VK (he/him) Race: Warforged Class: Fighter (probably Rune Knight) Origin: Spacer Backstory/Description: I have a specific story in the spoiler below, but I'm not attached to the specifics. Basically, I wanted to play a warforged that started as a bodyguard for a smuggler/pirate type character who liked to tinker with him and eventually gave him sentience on accident. When he realized what he'd done, the tinkerer tried to restrain/destroy him, so the warforged rebelled and was blown off the ship into the phlogiston.
Hammer is not sure when or how he was created, but he remembers the moment he became self-aware. He had been just a mindless protection drone serving as bodyguard/muscle for a Giff gunrunner, who fancied himself as something of an artificer and tinkered with Hammer whenever he had the chance, trying to make him more flexible and thus a more able bodyguard; however, he tinkered a little too much and accidentally gave Hammer sentience. When the gunrunner realized what was happening, he locked Hammer down and attempted to remove his sentience, or at least override him. Panicked at the thought of losing himself, or worse, being trapped within his own mind, he blew the airlock into the phlogiston. There he drifted for exactly 5 [years] 7 months 10 days 4 hours and 37 minutes before a kindly salvage ship happened upon him. They were headed for the [asteroid city] where they left him.
Frontstory: Hammer is not sure what happened to the gunrunner he escaped. Nor is he sure what he hopes happened to them. He is not scared of much, certainly not physical injury, but he worries about losing his independence again. For now, he hopes to find a crew where he can be safe and useful, to earn even more independence.
(I'm familiar with Spelljammer, but I've never been able to play a game in it, and the last I read of it was probably 15 years ago, but I'm excited at the opportunity)
(Since there aren't a lot of applications that could pilot a helm, I thought I'd add an alternative character) Character Name and pronouns: Grimkirk Sunfury (he/they) (Optional)Player pronouns and preferred name: VK (he/him) Race: Dwarf Class: Wizard (probably Divination or Abjuration) Origin: Spacer Backstory/Description: Surly dwarf pilot who was wrongfully accused of some crime or offense, and is trying to clear his name/escape. Frontstory: He wants to clear his name and prove his worth, but in the meantime needs to escape notice.
My backstory would be that I was a space experiment and that I escaped from my captors, highjacked a spaceship from the planet below, and crash-landed on the asteroid. (I have no experience in Spelljammer, but this would make it so I still don't know about the planet since I was raised in captivity.) Can I use this species?
Class: Paladin – Most likely Oath of Vengeance at 3 level.
Origin: Groundling
Background: Part of a Thri-kreen village that was attacked, and largely killed on its watch, though Ta’Rak managed to save a “holy relic” of the tribe(In actuality a random holy symbol once found amongst ruins on the planet). Survivors including itself were enslaved and taken up to the rock and put to work, though It watched as many of It’s kind were killed or died of brutal treatment. It managed to escape, unlocking whatever powers the holy relic held, and has since swore a personal vow to hunt those slavers responsible and obtain revenge, and hopefully some measure of recompense for those lost.
Frontstory: Wants to find the slavers responsible for its tribe’s murder and enslavement and also free other slaves. Generally seeks to punish those who prey on others, a burning hatred of all evil.
Character Name and pronouns: Evrik he/his (Optional)Player pronouns and preferred name: he/his Race: Human-Mark of Making Class: Cleric-Forge Domain Origin: Groundborn, but spent some time on the asteroid trying to learn whatever he can. Backstory/Description: Raised on the surface, Evrik worked crafting equipment and devices for various wizards, and was good enough that he was blessed with his god's favor (deity pending depending on pantheon availability but leaning towards Gond). On an otherwise unremarkable day, while setting up a new apparatus for a particularly innovative wizard, he accidentally triggered something bringing the device to life and teleporting him to an asteroid orbiting his homeland. The locals, acknowledging his talents, quickly put him to work and he's earned his way since. Frontstory: He has a strong desire to continue to learn and develop his craft with an increasing fascination with the magnificent flying vessels he's seen. He's been looking for a chance to work on one, though he doesn't care where it goes, and eventually, build one of his own design.
Character Name and pronouns: Dain Faeceran (he/him) Race: Astral Elf Class: Druid (Circle of Stars) Origin: Rockborn Backstory/Description: still working on this but basically he is very young by elf standards. He is finishing his ‘apprenticeship’ for star charting/divining and is looking forward to starting his life’s work of charting as much of the heavens as he can. Frontstory: His primary goal is to make accurate maps of the stars and their motion in an effort to divine the future to a better degree. It’s his belief that if they had a completely accurate map to read that the future would be an open book.
Character Name: Puddle (they/them) Race: Plasmoid Class: Rogue Origin: Spacer Backstory/Description: Puddle is a green plasmoid, often taking the form of a blob, and they like to go into places they do not belong and hide in small crevices. When they were young they went on a ship and hid in the crevices, accidently stowed away, they hid until they got hungry and searched for food, the crew members were not pleased that they picked up a juvenile plasmoid and argued what to do about them while Puddle watched while eating. When the topic of them capturing puddle came up and releasing them on a nearby planet, Puddle got scared and hid in the crevices where the crew can't get to them, it took several weeks before the crew made puddle one of thier own crew, which Puddle eased into and helped them clean as they grew up on the ship, and grew fascinated with the innerworkings of the ship itself and started to help repair it. Eventually the ship docked on an astroid where Puddle is exploring.
Frontstory: The curious Plasmoid wants to know everything about the inner workings of ships, and eventually wants to build a ship themselves possibly with help.
(Optional)Player pronouns and preferred name: you may call me Forge (they/them)
Race: Hadozee
Class: Clockwork Soul Sorcerer
Origin: Rockborn
Backstory/Description: A direct descendent of Primus herself (that's the family story that has been passed down from mother to daughter for generations). She was born and raised on the rock in [asteroid city]. Believes the crystal spheres are all part of the Great Orrery of the Multiverse. (Investigator or Sage background depending on further info)
Frontstory: Seeking adventure. Dreams of getting off the rock and making her way to Mechanus at the center of the Great Orrery. (Will flesh out back & front stories as we go)
Character Name and pronouns: Sullivan Canethus - they/them Player pronouns and preferred name: Box - they/she Race: VHuman, if allowed. Probably picking the Observant feat! Class: Wizard (going into Divination) Origin: Groundling Backstory/Description: A student of magic, born and raised on the planet and mostly unaware of the greater workings of the spelljamming world, Sullivan has spent a good portion of their life convinced of the existence of worlds beyond their own - a certainty bordering on mania. They, along with a number of other students from their college, were "recruited" as potential pilot fodder and brought to the asteroid, to the horror of the other students and delight of Sullivan. Frontstory: In exploring this whole new world, Sullivan is driven by their relentless curiosity to uncover every mystery, but might do well to learn a little bit of how to get along with others, and that not every question needs to be answered.

I have a homebrew species called a Sentient Parasite: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/177863-sentient-parasite

Character Name and pronouns: Ta’Rak. Ta, It/They,
Player name and pronouns: Ridley, He
Race: Thri-Kreen
Character Name and pronouns: Evrik he/his
(Optional)Player pronouns and preferred name: he/his
Race: Human-Mark of Making
Class: Cleric-Forge Domain
Origin: Groundborn, but spent some time on the asteroid trying to learn whatever he can.
Character Name and pronouns: Dain Faeceran (he/him)
Race: Astral Elf
Class: Druid (Circle of Stars)
Origin: Rockborn
Backstory/Description: still working on this but basically he is very young by elf standards.
Character Name: Puddle (they/them)
Race: Plasmoid
Class: Rogue
Origin: Spacer
Backstory/Description: Puddle is a green plasmoid, often taking the form of a blob, and they like to go into places they do not belong and hide in small crevices.
Character Name and pronouns: Huygynz (she/her)
(Optional)Player pronouns and preferred name: you may call me Forge (they/them)
Race: Hadozee
Class: Clockwork Soul Sorcerer
Origin: Rockborn
Backstory/Description: A direct descendent of Primus herself (that's the family story that has been passed down from mother to daughter for generations). She was born and raised on the rock in [asteroid city]. Believes the crystal spheres are all part of the Great Orrery of the Multiverse. (Investigator or Sage background depending on further info)
Frontstory: Seeking adventure. Dreams of getting off the rock and making her way to Mechanus at the center of the Great Orrery. (Will flesh out back & front stories as we go)
(Flexible, will adjust as needed)
Character Name and pronouns: Sullivan Canethus - they/them
Player pronouns and preferred name: Box - they/she
Race: VHuman, if allowed. Probably picking the Observant feat!
Class: Wizard (going into Divination)
Origin: Groundling
Backstory/Description: A student of magic, born and raised on the planet and mostly unaware of the greater workings of the spelljamming world, Sullivan has spent a good portion of their life convinced of the existence of worlds beyond their own - a certainty bordering on mania.
