After buttering up the staff with plenty of compliments on the food, wine, and service, he’ll steer the conversation towards gathering information on the stonemasons who were in the original airship trip to the island. Did they appear to be equipped with any weapons (i.e. did they appear to be worried about their safety)? We’re there any guards who came with them, or were already there?
It’s easy to get along with most of the crew being a fellow dwarf- not that they’re particularly hard to get along with any other time. The masons were equipped with picks and hammers, forged for multi purpose defence and combat. As far as you can tell from the crew, they have encountered nothing hostile at the island of yet.

After Ruven gives his invitation to dinner, Liam spends just a few more minutes taking in the sunset from the bow of the Golden Lining, before heading back below deck to his room to get ready for the meal.
When the meal is finally ready, he'll wait to take his seat until Ruven himself has done so. He partakes of a little bit of everything set before him, but goes easily on the wine. He makes some idle chit-chat for the early part of the meal, but gets more focused with his questions later on.
"So, Sir Venixia," he says slowly after he's pretty well had his fill and his ready to begin conversation in earnest, "or should that be Captain Venixia for now? I do believe I overheard one of the crew mention something about a group of stonemasons that have already set down on this island we're heading towards. Is there anything you can tell us about that, or about other groups who might have some presence on the island?"

“Hmmmm, Captain, yes, I like that.” You see a small smile spread across his face. “Ah yes! The stonemasons. Some of the finest Dwarven architects I could afford, and a human squad of site foremans. They were transported there a few days ago and should have a home base of operations established by the time we arrive.” He sits back in his chair, chewing a piece of chicken looking very proud of himself. He takes a moment to look around at the table and takes a sip of wine, before leaning in on his forearms. His voice lowers and his eyes narrow, as he continues;
“Now, I can see why you’re all wondering why I’ve hired such capable swords as yourselves for a simple mapping expedition. Now, I have not told the crew about this as I wish to avoid any panic or unrest, but I have been informed by the site foreman that one of the site workers has gone missing. Now, we don’t know if he has just adventured off to find and discover things for himself, or something more sinister. Fact is, we just don’t know what is on this island.”
Liam's alarm bells start going off in his head as soon as Ruven leans forward and tells of keeping secrets from his crew, and mention of someone going missing on the island does nothing to alay those concerns.
"Okay, so a worker has gone missing. Do you have any information about the circumstances of the disappearance? And for that matter, I'm curious how this island could be unexplored and uncharted if it's so close to Waterdeep..."
Nia grumpily came down to the dining room and taking a large plate of food and a glass of bubbly water before sitting next to Liam. She stabbed at her meat with her fork violently and started cutting the meat. She silently brushes her shoulder against Liam to reassure him that her anger is not directed in his direction. The last comment pierced the aura of her discontent. "Hey yeah. Is it like Evermeet with it's weird elf-space-distortion magic?"
“I’ve only had reports of him gone... missing. Rest assured, if you are able to recover the individual, you shall be rewarded with a healthy bonus. The site foreman has more information on the matter.
Regarding the island, well, I have found nothing relating to this particular mass of land after using my extensive resources and contacts to say it has been discovered! Beside-“
Ruven is cut off by a blood curdling, high pitched SCREAM from the deck above. Ruven freezes mid sentence and looks at you all, wild eyed, before jumping up from his chair and racing up the steps to the deck.
Gregor spent most of the evening eating and making light conversation, ready to let his friends do the talking.
But with the scream and his employers immediate departure, Gregor gets up slowly, his smile slowly twisting into something cruel that only his friends recognize as his pre-barbaric rage face, and he subtly slides the knife he was using up his tonic, and stalks towards the stairs with an animalistic grace.
"What was that?!" Nia squeaked before shoving a whole buttered cheese roll into her mouth. She hopped up and tried to say "Let's go see!" around the food in her mouth.
You all race upstairs to see a small number of off duty Dwarves crowded around the door to the amenities room. (3 on the map- which I will endeavour to put on the campaign home page this evening. Edit- it is up now) You can all see Runi, who has fallen backwards and is now sitting on the floor with her hand covering her mouth and looking inside the room, which you can see inside of now. The walls are dripping, painted in diluted blood. There is a half inch deep red puddle surrounding the body of a large dwarf who is face down, lifeless, wearing a red bandana. Gorum has been murdered.
Liam was on his feet as soon as he heard the scream, before even Ruven stood to move. Taking the staircase two steps at a time, he quickly reached the main deck to see the assembled dwarves. Peering past them, his blood runs cold at the sight that awaits. Then, a mere moment later, it runs hot as the adrenaline kicks back in. The scene needs to be secured so it can be analyzed with minimal disturbance. The rest of the crew needs to be accounted for and their recent whereabouts determined.
With a thought, Liam summons Calcifer from his extradimensional pocket space and sets him to the task of locating each of the crew members. A flutter of his black raven wings later and he is off on his task as Liam steps forward to attempt to bring some order to the situation.
"Everyone stand back!" He calls out as he moves forward to get between the crew members and the doorway. As he does so, he casts Mage Hand to reach out and shut the door before he even gets there, blocking visibility of the gruesome sight. Once he's between the crew and the door, he'll address them directly. "Does anyone know what happened here? Did anyone see anything?"
Perception check for Calcifer, trying to account for all of the crew:7
Smirking at the attempt for the others to try and be investigators and persuaders, Crispy leans against the doorway wall, taking in the room and it's details, waiting for everyone to finish so she can do what she used to do, wondering why a caster type would even run into a crime scene in the first place..
"Golly, did you guys FIND anything??" She says sarcastically, musing at the others. "Watch your step, Chubbs."
She takes mental notes of the room, her eyes flashing over all the details, the body, and waits for people to move so she can peek more in depth, hopefully picking up details besides the obvious.
Chubby, having no investigative skills to speak of, hangs back from the rest of the group. As the hired axe swinger of the group, he’s more interested in our safety and security. Thus, he hangs back, and keeps a keen eye on the people scrambling to see what’s going on. (Perception: 4). Anyone from the crew acting strangely different than would be expected? Anyone overly acting?
"Not actually trying to FIND anything at the moment, Crispy. Just trying to secure the scene so YOU can find something. That IS how this normally works, isn't it?"
"Yeah! Nice! Did you learn that in Wizard school?" Crispy says, sarcastically."But this time there's no criminal scum to extort, or threaten, or beat up. So, can you move?"
Liam stands in front of the door for a few moments longer than necessary, a grim frown on his face, before stepping aside and motioning for Crispy to head in if she chooses.
"Be my guest, oh highly honored and intelligent one."

"That's more like it. You stick to reading books or...spelling bees." Crispy walks in carefully, shaking her head in amusement, stifling back a snicker

Crispy is busy eating. It's amazing how much food she can consume while remaining so lithe and fit. But she's listening. Closely.

Crispy swallows her food, takes a huge swig of wine, and casual starts making her way up to the deck.
"Here we go, folks!" She calls out. "Cmon, Chubbs."

As a free action, can I regret my life choices?
Crispy notices that Chubby is giving her the stinkeye with that Nat 1.
"Chubb." she says, sighing. "Why are you looking at me that way. Not ME. The OTHERS."
She turns him by the shoulders to who he SHOULD be looking at.
Liam gives Crispy the stinkeye for her comment.
