“Once every eight years, the fantastic Witchlight Carnival touches down on your world, bringing joy to one settlement after the next. Its owners, Mister Witch and Mister Light, know how to put on a good show. But there’s more to this magical extravaganza than meets the eye!”
Hi everyone-
An Invitation!
I’m recruiting for a new play-by-post game using the published adventure, The Wild Beyond the Witchlight. Would you like to join us? (Obviously, if you’ve already read or played this adventure, you will be best served finding a different game to join.)
This adventure is designed to be combat-light, or even combat-optional. It’s inspired by children’s stories like Alice in Wonderland, the Wizard of Oz, and classic fairy tales like Rumpelstiltskin, Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, and Jack and the Beanstalk. Most of it takes place in the Feywild, the Plane of Faerie. It’s light, sometimes a little ridiculous, but hopefully a lot of fun. I will be following it as written, in the spirit the authors intended, without unnecessary changes. It’ll be quite a ride.
The game will live entirely in this forum on D&D Beyond. There will be a separate text-only Discord server for out-of-character chat. (If you’re not a Discord user, don’t fret - it’s not critical and we’ll help you set it up. It’s very easy.)
Even though the content will be light, we want to recruit long-term, committed players to our game. You should be able to make a short post at least once a day, six or seven days a week. (Of course, we understand that there may be times when real life intervenes and you may have to occasionally step away.) New players and folks new to play-by-post (PBP) are both very welcomed!
So… Propose a character you might play. We follow rules-as-written: standard rulebooks, nothing too exotic.
How to apply: You DON’T need to roll your character’s ability scores yet, or even settle on your class or race yet. (But here’s a preview: You’ll start off at first level, and draw from the Player’s Handbook, or possibly Volo’s, Mordenkainen’s, or Xanathar’s. No homebrew – sorry!) Instead, PM me a little info about yourself and your potential character ideas:
1. Tell me a little about your D&D and play-by-post background. Just curious to learn more about you! Again, new players are very welcome.
2. Next, tell me a little about the character you’re proposing for this adventure. In the spirit of this adventure and the stories it was inspired by, you might consider playing a child or young teen. (So many fairy tales and their kin feature young protagonists – Dorothy of Oz, Alice of Wonderland, Harry Potter, Little Red Riding Hood …you know the trope!) Or, consider an unlikely hero - the overweight village baker, maybe. Finally, you may also play a carnival employee (a “Witchlight hand”), or even a fey creature (a fairy or Harengon.)
• Possible Race/Class: Keep it simple. In addition to the usual races, there are two new ones unique to this adventure: “Fairy” and “Harengon” (fey rabbitfolk). Ask for details if you’re interested in these!
• Backstory: Optional. (Keep it short!)
• Background: In addition to the usual backgrounds, there are two new ones unique to this adventure: “Feylost” (you grew up in the Feywild) and “Witchlight Hand” (you work for the fey carnival). (Ask for details!)
• Personality: This is an important bit! Beyond the usual “traits”, how do you want to play this character? Who do you want to be? What are your inspirations, if any, from literature, film, or elsewhere? (Will you be drawing from Hermione Granger? Huckleberry Finn? Gene Belcher? Your brother? Or is it someone brand new?) Tell us a little about your character’s quirks. Let’s make this fun!
I DON’T need: • Ability Scores: Not yet - We’ll worry about this later. • Your time zone: Doesn’t matter - all geographic regions are welcomed.
Keep in mind: Virtually every encounter in this adventure can be resolved without needing to resort to combat. I expect there may be some fights, but most problems can be solved with quick wits and clever roleplay. This is not a game for battle tacticians or dungeon-crawlers.
Finally… I need:
• A Lost Thing: Each character in your adventuring party visited the Witchlight Carnival when they were very young. They had something precious stolen from them (don’t worry about how, yet.) It could be a physical thing, like a doll, or something less tangible, like your sense of direction. What was it? Describe the precious thing you lost at the carnival as a child. (I have plenty of suggestions from the book if you’re looking for more concrete ideas.)
We hope you can join us! PM me for any questions or concerns.
Thanks for the applications, everyone! I can see this will be a fun campaign... If you're interested in potentially joining us, try to apply (via PM) by the end of the day this Thursday (tomorrow, Apr 28) so I can try to make some decisions by Friday afternoon. Some great character ideas have been submitted! (This will be entertaining, for sure!) Don't hesitate to ask if you have questions about what's being planned.
