This is a second or third campaign for most of the participants and it is a slow burn. Posts are 3-4 times per week. You're welcome to post more frequently but that's the pace we have settled into.
Campaign so far... One of the PCs is looking for a missing dwarf entrepreneur/mine magnate who was kidnapped by goblins. One of the PCs is hot to hunt the white dragon that has been sighted flying over the valley. One of the PCs is just killing time in between morning and afternoon tea. And at the moment they find themselves in the small hillside village of Phandalin, which happened to be suffering under the depredations of a gang of mercenaries calling themselves the Redbrands. The PC we add will encounter our PCs engaged in a streetfight with some of the Redbrands (taking place as we type) and have a chance to intervene.
PC will start at Level 2. Ability scores are Point Buy or Standard Array. You can take starting equipment per DNDB. You will also start with 75gp, or use that 75gp toward that much worth of additional basic equipment. The only magic item you can purchase would be a Potion of Healing (50gp).
I am not looking for any particular build and am more interested in fun character ideas. I will balance the campaign as necessary based on the party in front of me. But in case it matters to your decision, the current party composition is:
Leonin Barbarian
Tiefling Cleric
Halfling Warlock

A Paragraph to Tell a Story about an important event in this PCs life:
What Brings them to Phandalin? It is a small but growing settlement, and many lords and merchants are making investments in the area and opening new mines. Gundren Rockseeker (the missing dwarf) has hired many to help him on a secret project. Other folks may have come here with less scrupulous motives, looking to win some coin by hook or by crook. There is also the exciting news of a large dragon seen in the area. Not only that, but many of the nearby roads are unsafe, with Orcs, Goblins and other threats more active than usual. Or, your PC could be a lifelong resident of the area, taking up sword or spell to defend their home. These are just some ideas to provoke thought and set some of the themes of the campaign. Other reasons for being in town are welcome. So why is your PC here?:
This won't be open long. I will make a selection as soon as I find the right fit.

Age and Appearance: T'laren is fairly old for an elf, having watched the half millennium mark come and go. Best he can reckon he's somewhere just shy of 570, but much of his last few centuries has been spend in the woods, with one day passing much like the one before it, and the week before that, and the month before that. His face still has that elvish youthfulness to it, but he has some lines at his eyes and mouth that show most when he's smiling. His hair started to thin, and he now shaves it close, his bald pate tanned from a life outdoors.
A Paragraph to Tell a Story about an important event in this PCs life:
T'laren had been settled down to a life of a craftsmen, a woodworker by trade, at home among the forest more than in a city or town. Within recent years, however, the woods that claimed him as their own were in turn claimed by an upstart noble, who took affront to anyone living off 'his' land. There was some back and forth, accusations and recriminations about 'poaching' and 'unlawful trespass', and a bunch of other uppity sounding terms. All of that came to a head when he came back to his home to find the noble's men smashing his work and setting torch to his home. Fire. Fire loose in his woods? It wasn't even a conscious decision, and it wasn't until afterward as he was piling the bodies on the pyre his home bad become, that he realized that there was no going back. Better to vanish than to remain at odds with the noble, who would surely seek retribution.
Once the fire burnt down, he gathered what possessions he could salvage, and headed out.
So why is your PC here?:
Phandalin seemed as likely a place as any to make a fresh start, even if it was a bit more... civilized... than he preferred. As for why here, and why now? He'd put enough distance and time between what happened at his former home that he no longer heard rumors that grew and grew about his standoff with the noble. According to one drunk a year and half ago, T'laren had turned into a great bear made of fire and consumed the thugs, and in another, the noble was there himself, and T'laren had tied the noble to the tree to watch as he defeated each of his soldiers one by one.
Nah, a mining settlement is one of the last places anyone would be looking for him, so it'll work for now. Besides, it's not the full use of his skill, but new mines means the smith can use a steady hand fitting wooden hafts to all the picks and sledges, and the cartmaker can use a pair of hands that know their way around a spoke shave and plane.
It's not a place he plans to settled down, but it'll do for now. Odd jobs don't pay a lot, but he's used to going without, and it gives him a chance to listen to stories travelers tell. If there's anyone after him, he hopes to hear of trouble before it arrives.
Cassius stands at average height for a human man, shorter then most other half orcs. He has close cut black and grey streaked hair, a large and jagged scar leaving a spot where it does not grow on the right side of his head. His eyes are a dull brown with a few flecks of green in the left. His grayish toned skin is also covered in various scars from small to large, several tattoos spattered in as well.
Clothing wise he wears simple travelers garb that has seen better days with patches here and there. The colors are mostly plain with browns and a bit of black thrown in. The thing that stands out the most is a necklace that looks to be of orcish make.
A Paragraph to Tell a Story about an important event in this PCs life: Cassius grew up on the streets of the slums of Waterdeep, joining one of the many gangs as soon as he could throw a punch. Due to his orcish half he was on the quick path to seving as muscle for the boss, soon even being recruited to the big leagues to serve as a bodyguard for a semi prominent thieves guild. In order to make him worth keeping around Cassuis was put under the harsh training of a failed monk. This was infact who gave him most of his scars as they felt the best way to train was through life or death battles. If you survived then you had learned the lesson. Out of eight other students, Cassius was the only to survive.
Why he is in Phandalin: Cassius was sent to find a member of the guild that fled from Waterdeep with an item important to the guild but saw a chance to leave and make an attempt at a normal life. That had been over ten years ago and for the last five he has been living in Phandalin as a hand for hire and an occasional fighter in times of need. With all the recent troubles he has been doing his best to help keep things safe.
