(I'm sorry, I just don't get where Sorsha's illusion supposedly is and where the spy is now, I can only say that Sorsha would keep using her silent image to try to block the spy off at the end of any alley he runs into. Mechanically I guess the spy would use an action to throw the canister. If she can't catch up to stop him she'll just give up on the chase now.)
Your the blue dot, so the only point you could have cast the illusion was the intersection right in front of you, blocking him from retreating that direction…at least that is what I thought your plan was. There is no way for you to catch up to him, the closest is Frangipani and she is now unable to see the guy. The guy used his action to throw the cansister and has his movement left and several avenues he can take that you would not be able to see..
After pulling a little harder, it opens up and he heads back up the stairs to find Eberk watching from the balcony. There is a soft glow of magical essence inside the room he opened, illuminating the contents of the room with a blueish green tint
[I feel like Expeditious Retreat is the perfect thing here, where if the guy used his action to throw smoke then he's one Dash behind. He doesn't know all of our positions, so his smoke can mask his direction from you, but as soon as he comes out of the alley, Vars would see him. Right?]
On his way up to the balcony, Other than being a big door, Sparhawk tries to think why the door was difficult to open. He looks out trying to locate the others, ready to get back to searching this dangerous home.

If he chose to keep heading west…since he did not come into Vars view, you can deduce he likely went south. The only ones to know for sure he came out of the alley are Vars and Frangipani

Okay, I missed a bit. Would I have had time (or been within reach) to do anything to the guy?

(Okay, thanks, Sorsha will give up the chase and suggest everyone would return to the house again then.)
Sparhawk grabs the door to open it…it doesn’t open…

( chases are definitely more confusing in PBP)

Frangipani yowls in frustration and takes her fury out on a nearby crate, claws sharpened she stalks back to her captain and chirrups for a treat.

frangipani’s frustrated destruction of the crate produces and interesting discovery. A small linen pouch filled with 50 silver coins

Not really, unless you used a long range weapon of some sort.
In that case, Vars will attempt to shoot the guy in the leg, preferably behind the knee to keep him from going anywhere.
ShotAttack: 7 Damage: 10
We'll see how that goes.
Well...that probably missed.
"Hm. So our spy has magic at his disposal." Bjorn returns to the hiding place to check for anything the spy might have left behind. Investigation: 19
"Think he might have run for the Hosttower? I'm sure he's going to tell someone he saw Abernathy."
(Let’s get to work at the house)
Eberk leads Sparhawk to the room. "More magic in here. Let's see what other furniture will try to eat us."
Back at the house Sorsha follows Eberk and Sparhawk into the room glancing it over.
Perception: 5
Vars curses as his arrow doesn’t find his mark on the speeding target. Reluctantly, he proceeds back to the house.
Perception; 16
Yep, not enough to score
