Your the blue dot, so the only point you could have cast the illusion was the intersection right in front of you, blocking him from retreating that direction…at least that is what I thought your plan was. There is no way for you to catch up to him, the closest is Frangipani and she is now unable to see the guy. The guy used his action to throw the cansister and has his movement left and several avenues he can take that you would not be able to see..

Sparhawk grabs the door to open it…it doesn’t open…
After pulling a little harder, it opens up and he heads back up the stairs to find Eberk watching from the balcony. There is a soft glow of magical essence inside the room he opened, illuminating the contents of the room with a blueish green tint
( chases are definitely more confusing in PBP)
[I feel like Expeditious Retreat is the perfect thing here, where if the guy used his action to throw smoke then he's one Dash behind. He doesn't know all of our positions, so his smoke can mask his direction from you, but as soon as he comes out of the alley, Vars would see him. Right?]
Frangipani yowls in frustration and takes her fury out on a nearby crate, claws sharpened she stalks back to her captain and chirrups for a treat.
On his way up to the balcony, Other than being a big door, Sparhawk tries to think why the door was difficult to open. He looks out trying to locate the others, ready to get back to searching this dangerous home.
If he chose to keep heading west…since he did not come into Vars view, you can deduce he likely went south. The only ones to know for sure he came out of the alley are Vars and Frangipani

Not really, unless you used a long range weapon of some sort.
In that case, Vars will attempt to shoot the guy in the leg, preferably behind the knee to keep him from going anywhere.
