"If he's the one who killed the other servants, then he's been trapped here for quite a while. Think he's dead?" Bjorn changes his appearance back to normal and carefully approaches the cube, to inspect the gnome's face for signs of life.
As he approaches he can see the gnomes eyes shift with his movement. His face is stuck in the same expression and none of his limbs move. Only his eyes seem able to shift
“Remember, we found this key earlier. Maybe it goes to something in one of these rooms. “ Sparhawk keeps alert to the next creature that may attack. (Perception 20
Sparhawk listens intently and can catch the sound of chewing within the walls
Sorsha follows Eberks and peers into the next room. Perception: 5
The next room is dark except for the magic detected by Eberks spell. There is a large crystal embedded in the center of the wall to the right ( approximately behind the paintings)
[Large crystals have historically not been friendly lol.]
"Definitely alive. I don't know how we'd get him out, but he'd be crazy to think he could take on all of us with that rusty knife."
Bjorn taps on the side of the cube with his club, to observe the nature of the material. (Sticky, crystalline, etc.) "If we hauled him downstairs and put him on the cart, we could chip away at this stuff during our journey east. Somebody would have to go and get the cart, though."
Edit: "Or turn him over to Irongrass, sure. Any way we can inform the mage without having to go back to the tower and burn more of our daylight?"
This room is Abernaths study. There are more books. Mostly atlas types with several open on his desk. There is also what looks like a type of journal with a quil and some ink ext to it. The center of the room is a large carpet, expertly embroidered with single scenes and strange large reptiles of ferocious appearance. The walls in this ro pool m are sort of plain compared to the other rooms you have explored, as if he had yet to decorate this one.

The substance shimmys when you touch it with the club. It is a gelatinous type of substance. Not sticky or slimy
Sparhawk should try investigation instead perception is for generality and investigation is more thorough. Make sure you say which.wall you search as it takes approximately 10min to search each wall. When I get off work I will post the room layout
Sparhawk will investigate an inner wall (that per map we have not explored yet?), being very careful to not touch the carpet: Investigation:13
"If we have a rope, we can wrap it around this cube at the mans waist level. Then, if we can, we can slowly pull it through, and perhaps pull him out. It could be that the cube is another of these creatures that guards the area so be careful."
Vars nods to the suggestions concerning Butterman, "I do think Irongrass should be perfectly willing to help us out with this. Though it is a little odd to me that no one else has already searched the house...if Irongrass is really so concerned about Abernathy, why not look where he can for himself? Or at least send some other wizards to do so?"
He walks over to the journal and takes a look at the pages:

"I've been thinking the same thing. The way I see it, there's two options. One, they came while there was an illusion spell in place, and they didn't realize it. And now it's faded. That doesn't seem likely though. They're all very smart wizards, and he's widely known to use illusions. Which brings us to two..."
Bjorn mimics Sparhawk, moving around the edge of the carpet if possible. He approaches the desk.

"Smart!" Bjorn grins as he looks to Sorsha for the go-ahead. He freezes as he sees Frangipani starting to lick the cube, as if he was seeing someone lighting the fuse on a bomb.
Frangipani continues trying to get purchase on the trapped gnome, she experimentally licks the cube.
The cube seems like it avoids your tongue. It recoils as your little sandpaper appendage barely makes contact. The flavor is similar to Japanese rice candy

As Sparhawk scrutinizes the wall, he puts his hands onto it, feeling for variations and indicators of a secret, he realizes the plain undecorated wall is just an illusion and the the actual wall is covered in a giant map of the known world with indicators for lands beyond the mapped seas.

"For now, lets continue our search for clues." Sparhawk suggests. "Doesn't look like this Butterman is going anywhere."

Sparhawk searches for a secret door on the plain walls being very mindful of the carpet on not stepping on it. Perception 21.
