Hi, I'm looking for players to join my play-by-post game, most likely on ----> Discord <----.
::dramatic music intensifies::
The Dark Domain of Khet
Events take place in a frozen, sparsely populated area of a "low magic" world. Non-clerics/non-druid casters are rare, and viewed with great superstition. The PCs begin play as prisoners inside of the walled City of Goerstaadt in the land of Ysylgraad (a "Far North" environment). The city is in the late stages of a siege, and starvation and disease are prevalent. It is deep winter, when the sun sets and does not rise for months. The city is besieged by a crusading invasion force: The Worshipers ofKhet (Khetites), who are ruled by a tyrannical Queen/High Priestess and her vile family. Khetites believe in the One True God: Khet. To show their devotion, they are branded on the face by a branding iron with his holy symbol. Nonbelievers are considered heretics and are given the choice to be branded or burned alive in purifying flames.
Game: D&D 5e Group type: PbP (leaning towards Discord w/ Avrae) Experience: I am a veteran DM of 20+ years Game style: Absurd, violent, horrific, occasionally shockingly gory, darkly humorous, sandboxy, theater of the mind, immersive deep RP Time Zone: PST Availability: 9am-2am PST, usually 7 days a week Preferred Players: 18+ Number of Players: 6 to 8 Playable Races: Non-homebrew Playable Classes: Non-homebrew Starting Level: 1 XP: Awarded, but an occasional milestone here and there. Character Alignments: Preferably not evil, but I am open to great character ideas. Ability Scores: 4d6, drop the lowest, reroll all 1s
Your Character Backstory: You are locked inside of a prison cell inside of a walled city. You have no starting gear. Due to the nature of the prison (while inside), spellcasters have no ability to cast or replenish their spells. The city has been under siege for 6 months, and it is the middle of winter. Consider the following:
How did you end up in prison in this city under siege?
Are you from the Domain of Khet? (If not, how did your character end up there?)
Are you branded as a Worshiper of Khet? (Unbranded folks may have a tough time if you run into Khetites)
I'm happy to answer any questions about the setting and help develop character backstory ideas. You don't need to have every detail figured out right now.
Character Religions: Inhabitants of the Domain of Khet primarily worship Khet (the One True God). All other religions are considered heretical. However, the core religion of Ysylgraad (the lands where the City of Goerstaadt is) worships a druidic faith. Players can worship any non-homebrewed god, but there may be severe consequences for doing so openly. Players should consider that when choosing deities. If you choose to venerate Khet, your face has been permanently branded with his holy symbol.
Khet, God of Oaths: "The One True God" Alignment: Lawful Evil Holy Symbol: 3 vertical lines, the middle slightly raised Domains: Ambition, Order, War Portfolio: Ambition, Control, Oaths, Tyranny To show their devotion, Worshipers of Khet are branded on the face. Nonbelievers are burned alive in purifying flames.

Back Story:
Needles was ousted from her tribe mainly due to the fact that she has a mouth on her and could not put up with most of the males of her tribe, as they were mostly just too dumb for her liking and she was not nice about it. So she ended up living on the streets of Goerstaadt making whatever ever life she could for herself. Which mainly meant she stole anything and everything she could get her hands on or do the occasional break in for whomever was willing to pay. She hates living in this city though as in her mind dealing with all these cultists is just too much trouble. Especially since after one unfortunate robbery of a church she had to cover what she was actually doing by seeking to become a member, which is now why her face is disfigured with this stupid symbol of Khet. If there was a way to get it off her face she would, though it has come in handy every now and then, but she would still prefer to be symbol free.
But now she is sitting in jail at the worst possible time. She was just trying to escape the city before the siege broke and was stealing some food and supplies from one of the barracks before she left, but that stupid guard walked in at the wrong time and caught her. So now she is sitting in jail awaiting her fate but always keeping an eye out to see if she can make her escape.
Keyfiel bears the brand of Khet, but secretly he prays to the god of bountiful harvest Chauntea. He has dim memories of his family and barely survived on the streets of Goerstaadt. He stole the food he needed to survive and was caught by Galford a disreputable mercenary one day. He was pressed into service and became Galford's errand boy and sometimes meat shield. Keyfield was wounded and he can see the calculating look in Galford's eye deciding his fate. he knew he was a hair's breadth away from being killed like putting down a dog.
Once he recovered Galford threw him into the fighting rings and through strict discipline he trained Keyfiel how to fight. One day coming back from finishing a contract with Galford he saw a little girl being dragged away by Khet followers. He knew he should have minded his business, but he couldn't help himself. He intervened and gave those thugs a bloody beating. Galford snorted and knocked him out soon after. When he awoke he was in prison.
Giles has a way of blending in such that you would never notice him in a room, in a tavern, in a concert chamber. He has one of those faces, “Aren’t you that guy? You look familiar to me, I just can’t place you.” He’s heard all of that before. And I’m sure he will again.
How many of you have had the chance, nay, the luck, the incredible blessing to meet your deity? And lived to tell about it? You are speaking to one just now. Everyone knows her name, says it casually as they roll the dice, roll the bones, make the bet. But they really don’t know her, haven’t encountered her like I have. Tymora. See? Instantly you know her, but really? Do you really?
She has blessed me, given me gifts, abilities, and I will use them. She has never wanted me to turn away from any adventure, she has brought me through countless scrapes and tough spots. I know she has bigger plans for me…
Except, sometimes she has a way of testing me. That last episode was ... so dumb. I thought it would be so easy. Talk my way out, escape the Khet, make a little money from them. Little did I know that they would catch me and the barbarians would BRAND me on the face. Good thing that I think I can hide it, if I need to. But I couldn't quite convince the powers that be in Goerstaadt that I wasn't a Khetian spy. Perhaps that guard had seen me before, who knows. But now here I am, in quite a pickle. Dear Lady Tymora, you have my back, right?
I see what happened, you rolled 4 and kept 4. That's actually my bad, I didn't specify to drop the lowest. I just said re-roll all 1s. Do a re-roll, but how bout I give you a free 18?
Taking into account your historical references, I believe that a certain neglected character of mine - dormant, mute, weeping in the shadows as I skip over him time and time again for warlocks and wizards - perfectly fits the bill. He is a Rune Knight, but before I disclose any more... do giants exist/have giants existed in Yslgraad?

Yeah, I've had DMs offer generous dice roll rules and didn't think to question it, so thank you for the correction and the kind gesture. I'd ask to replace the 9 (above) with the 18.
Name: Kamlen Reed Race: Human (Variant) Class: Fighter Backstory:
Kamlen, now a young man of 19, was raised the squire of a Knight Errant called Mergo the Wise. They met when Mergo was hunting beyond the city of Goerstaadt, and was beset upon by followers of Khet. Mergo, who had appeared half drunk and poorly out of practice with his sword, proved to be a lethal adversary. When the fighting had stopped, all that remained were Mergo and a seven year old boy with a brand upon his face. The child of one of the zealots. Kamlen. From that day onward Mergo raised Kamlen, both as his father-figure and formal tutor. Mergo had shown Kamlen respect, purpose, and virtue beyond anything his parents had or could. So, on a fateful night a week ago when Mergo was too drunk to stand again and a cutpurse shoved a punching dagger into his lung, Kamlen ran the woman down half a mile in the snow and proceeded to beat her to death in front of many witnesses. The cut purse had long dropped the goods she had stolen, and with no evidence or witnesses to support his claims - and a scar upon his cheek - the local authorities declared Kamlen the murderer of Mergo and the woman who surely must have been an unfortunate passerby who witnessed it before running for her life. A death sentence awaits Kamlen, if but for this siege.

I know you said that you're leaning towards using Discord as the main mode of playing, but I don't have access to Discord at the moment; only DNDBeyond. But I really like how the campaign sounds at the moment, and I've been looking everywhere for a dark-style campaign to play in, and this fits the bill as far as I know. I hope that's ok! If not, it's cool too.
