(Zlee searches the Bugbear and finds the key. He also finds 3 GP, some decent armor and the giant Warhammer that seems to be of pretty good quality. Zlee releases Bess from her cage, and she tentatively exits the cage.)
"Yes, your father is fine. He wanted me to give you this." Cinder hands the patchwork doll to the little girl. He notices a fleck of goblin blood on it and tries to wipe it off, smearing it a bit. "Ah, well...stay here a movement, I wish to examine this statue, then we can quit this place." He smiles at the little girl before walking over to the statue. It examines it and the writing at its base.
(Zlee searches the dead Goblins and finds copper pieces adding up to about 2 GP, some rocks, and some incense on the Shaman, as well as the standard Goblin array on each one.)
(Cinder walks over to the statue and looks at it. It depicts a knight, his sword in front of him pointing at the ground. He seems vaguely familiar. You think it looks like that guy on the mural, the leader guy... you know, the guy... but you can't remember his name. Maybe it'll come to you if you think about it long enough.)
On the base of the statue, you notice a small plaque with an inscription that reads:
"If you are to keep this, you must first give it to me."
Cinder gazes at the statue pensively, trying to remember anything he learned in the first room that can help him here. "Is this some sort of logic puzzle?" He asks no one in particular.
History: 5
Wasn't sure if I had to roll or just go back and look, so I rolled.
"Ah, I remember! Sextus Varius, this is him!" Cinder exclaims excitedly, "But does this mean below? Something you keep, but you first have to give....my word!" He pauses, seeing if merely saying the answer to the riddle was enough to cause something to happen.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Hmm...that's not it. Did I answer incorrectly or is this not a puzzle at all...well, one last try then." Cinder ponders for several minutes..."Wasn't there something about an oath in the first room? Yes, it was: "I pledge to serve law, protect the innocent, battle the agents of chaos, and never reveal the secrets of the Delian Order. My word is my bond, my life and honor is for the order, for this night and all nights to come."Cinder waits again to see if anything has changed, listening and watching more closely this time.
A loud rumbling begins to fill the room, tremors shaking the ground. On the northern wall, behind the spot where the cage had been, a section of the stone wall moves to reveal a kind of sliding door that opens. From your positions, you all can see that there are some stone Sarcophagus' in this room, but your line of sight is somewhat limited.)
If you all want to go into the room please go ahead and give me Perception checks.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Ah, it seems that did it! Manikin, Thistle, if you to would be so kind as to stay with Bess, Zlee and I can inspect these chambers. It won't take but a minute and there could be priceless knowledge kept here!" Cinder heads towards the sarcophagus, watching for traps and other oddities.
(You angle yourself to see thru the door a little better, and you see 6 stone tombs, 3 on each side, laying horizontally, as well as 1 larger, more ornate Sarcophagus laying vertically against the north wall. The room is about 50 x 50 feet, so not really big, considering all that is in there. As you inspect the door, you do not find anything strange or alarming, like a trap or anything like that.)
Entering the room, Cinder casts produce flame for light. He inspects the smaller tombs first to get a general idea of who they were before looking over the larger one closely. "I suspect this the sarcophagus of Sextis Varius. If so, it's a marvelous find!"
(As you inspect the Sarcophagus, you lightly touch the lid. A rumbling is heard, then a hissing, like an airlock opening. You see the bigger Sarcophagus lid swing open, revealing a mummified corpse. Resting between his hands is a very nice looking Longsword, with a handle that looks almost like it's made from a blue tinted steel. A loud, booming voice suddenly speaks.)
"Show yourself, my Delian brother. Why do you call upon the spirit of Sextus Varius?"
Cinder jumps at the loudness of the voice in the quiet crypt, "Is that with whom I am speaking?" Cinder addresses the room looking around for a interlocutor to look at and finally just settling his eyes on the corpse, "I am Cinder, my friend here is Zlee, a paladin." He says, hoping having an actual paladin along would help the situation, "We came to this tomb in search of a little girl who had been kidnapped by goblinoids and brought here. In the act of rescuing her, we found this room by chance." He figured honesty was the best policy in dealing with unquiet spirits of noble warriors. Admittedly, he had no experience with such things, so he waited tensely on the voice's reply.
(A divine looking light suddenly surrounds Zlee, who looks a bit surprised.)
"A Holy Warrior... welcome, brother. You and your friends have performed a great deed. The world may have forgotten us, but as long as heroes like you step forward to protect the innocent, our ideals live on."
(The Longsword held by Sextus begins to glow a pale blue. It starts moving and floats towards Zlee.)
"I bequeath to you the only thing I have left to give. I give you... Defender..."
(The sword glows and continues to float in front of Zlee, beckoning to him. He grabs it from mid-air and is temporarily covered in the same blue glow as the sword.)
"Farewell..."
(The voice fades away and the lid closes on the Sarcophagus. The pale blue light slowly fades away, and Zlee is left with a beautiful new Longsword. You all exit the room and the door closes behind you.)
Spoiler for Zlee:
Zlee, thru some sort of supernatural means, you understand that you have been given a Longsword imbued with ancient magic that deals +2 damage against certain 'evil' creatures (Goblins, Kobolds, Orcs, etc.)
DM's note: Sorry, guys, took a few liberties in the interest of finishing up. Feel free to RP any last thing you want to do in the Room where the statue is, the next post will be the wrap up. Thanks, Zlee and Cinder, for sticking thru this adventure. I'm sorry if everyone else dropping out made it any less fun for you guys.
"Ha, that seems to have worked out well. I will have to update the libraries records, maybe I'll see if a couple of the historians would like to venture with me back here to study this place further. If you bring that sword to my father's smithy I could clean it for you and restore some of the detailing on the guard and pommel, they look a bit faded..." Cinder continues on talking about the details of the sword and the mysteries of the crypt even as they rejoin the others and take the journey to return Bess to her father.
Thanks DM and Zlee for the adventure! I'll post more if the wrap up seems to warrant it, if not, maybe I'll see you guys on another PbP in the future!
(The party takes Bess and escorts her out of the tomb area, going back past the stone bridge, back past the offering room with the murals. As you pass by, you all notice that there is a new depiction on the walls: It's a carving of the 4 of you! The mural shows you all saving Bess from the Goblins. You smile and head out. It's early afternoon. If you hurry, you might just make it back to the village before it gets too late. Thistle helps clean Bess up a little bit and you are on your way.
You trek briskly, already somewhat familiar with the woods and no longer having to worry about tracking. It is late in the evening, around 8 or 9pm when the party arrives back at the north edge of town near Rickard's property.)
"Bess! My sweet girl!"
(Rickard runs and meets you all outside of his gate just as you clear the woods. He has obviously been waiting near there, hoping to see you all return.
"Papa!" Bess cries, as they run and embrace each other, both shedding tears of joy. The sight of the big, burly Blacksmith crying over having his little girl back brings joy to all of your hearts. After letting them have their moment, Rickard thanks all of you, shakes all of your hands, and bids you all to allow him to take you back to the Tavern so that you may rest.
"They did it! They saved my girl!" Rickard shouts as they enter the busy Tavern. The townspeople are all excited, cheering, clapping you all on the back, congratulating you all and Rickard for getting his daughter back. Willfred shakes all of your hands and offers you all whatever you wish to drink or eat, on the house. Jack the Serving Boy hugs Bess and holds back tears as well. The entire tavern proclaim you heroes and surround you, eager to hear your tales of heroism and how you saved Bess.)
DMs note: Feel free to RP anything you would like to happen here. This is pretty much the end of the One Shot. Thank you, ACJC and DaNoLyfeKing, for sticking with it even though the other folks dropped out. I hope you enjoyed it. :)
When Bess points to the bugbear, Zlee seaches the bugbear for the key for the lock.
(Zlee searches the Bugbear and finds the key. He also finds 3 GP, some decent armor and the giant Warhammer that seems to be of pretty good quality. Zlee releases Bess from her cage, and she tentatively exits the cage.)
"Is my daddy ok?"
(She looks up at you all with hope in her eyes.)
Do you all do anything else?

“Yes your daddy is fine. He was worried about you,” said Zlee.
Can Zlee search the other goblins too?
