Ability scores: 151314141015 Name: Heran Galreth Race: Water Genasi Class: Rogue (Phantom) Background: Inheritor Backstory (brief): Heran comes from a family living near the Soulwrath mountains, who made their living surviving the harsh weather to gather items at the request (and coin) of others. She was only daughter and middle child of three. Her other brother got along well, though would often tease her after she mentioned often seeing shadows out of the corner of her eye. As the siblings entered their teens, they began to help in the family business. It was hard work, but there was a sense of pride in it. During one excursion, she and her mother were hired as guides to a group of travelers. Once they found what they were looking for, the travelers stole their things, including the precious compass her mother had that had been in the family for generations, and left the two for dead. By more than a bit of luck and the help of the shadows, the two managed to get back home worse for wear. After hearing what happened, her older brother left home in search of revenge, despite the protests of their father. Once she recovered, Heran spent some time with her family. But as a few years passed, and her brother not returning, she decided to pack her bag and go out to find him. The prospect of seeing more of the world also excited her, and was confidant with her skills and the help of the shadows that everything will turn out okay. What are you doing in Fort Imma?: Heran's travels have taken her to Fort Imma to resupply. She is using the opportunity to earn some more coin, and find out any information on her older brother Derk or their mother's compass.
Name:Nathaniel Skyfollower Race: Human Class: Druid of the Stars Background: Clan Crafter Backstory (brief): Fascinated with the grandeur of the cosmos, Nathaniel holds the skies as an open book; where not only the stories of the ancestors are written in cosmic clarity each night, but also the fortunes of the bold may be woven into its parchment. Originally from Roodacre, Nathaniel sought out the mines and forges of the dwarves of High Badorum, for only there could he craft the purist optical glass required for the star map he had been researching. After five long years he is returning home and has recently arrived in Fort Imma having taken passage from Mazemouth. Ability scores: Point buy
Backstory: Inosa's family was suffering from the backlash of the Shadow Empire so Inosa and her husband, Lelluan, left for Lindost in hopes that they would be able to escape the legacy of a war they weren't alive to witness. While traveling through Osmial, in the town of Albamere, Lelluan disappeared suddenly while out buying supplies. Believing that he had been targeted as a refugee and likely because he was a Shadar-Kai, Inosa set out to track down her husbands kidnappers. After tracking them through Goldhollow and Roadacre, and in her desperation using steadily more violent methods, Inosa found herself with one last lead in Fort Imma. Because tracking a single enemy doesn't pay she's taken up bounty hunting while searching for clues to her husbands whereabouts.
Well, you can replicate that ability spread exactly with Point Buy, so I will just use Point Buy to distribute them a little more wisely (too many 11s which are functionally no better than 10s). I am currently debating between a human Warlock 2/Wizard 5 divination scholar with a secret, a wood elf Ranger 2/Rogue 3 archer scout, a goblin War Wizard 5 with a chip on her shoulder, or a feral tiefling Oath of Redemption Paladin 5 (which I think of as the Hopepunk oath).
EMIW, where do you imagine this game might fit on a continuum from rollicking adventure at one end to grimdark quest at the other? That would help me choose...

Name: Ghurr the Green Race: Bugbear Class: Paladin - Oath of the Ancients Background: Outlander Backstory (brief): Ghurr's family may have originally come from the Bloodsands, but he has no memory of it. He grew up in the depths of the Magnal Forest. His parents, not being like other Bugbears, were gentle and thoughtful; his mother a druid and his father a hedge wizard. Unfortunately for Ghurr, he's inherited the stereotypical dim-wittedness of his kind. Even as a boy he was big and strong. Give him a big club and as a pre-teen he could hold his own against a brown bear but he constantly caused explosions with the potions in his father's workshop. But that never bothered Ghurr as long as he could spend days playing with the animals, singing and playing music as he picked flowers, and tending to his mother's gardens. For any who saw him, he was a gentle giant with a big smile.
That is until the goblin woodsmen came. The smell of smoke and blood drew Ghurr to a clearing. A gang of goblins were cutting down trees, cooking animals they'd killed, and poking at a bear cub they had tied to a stake. Ghurr didn't hesitate, even for a second. He lumbered into the clearing, and turning his large walking stick into a weapon, he beat the goblins to within an inch of death, only stopping when they all lay on the ground whimpering. He drove them from the forest but Ghurr realized there would be others and while his parents could keep watch over this part of the woods, there was a world out there that needed protection. Ghurr took an oath to protect what was beautiful, joyous and light filled against the dark of those like the goblins. Ghurr the Green was born.
What are you doing in Fort Imma?: Ghurr has been traveling the length and width of Lindost but has yet to spend much time in larger towns. The size of Whitebridge scared him, but Fort Imma seemed manageable. And the smell of the ocean was beautiful. He's quickly become known as the strong giant who speaks simply and isn't the fastest to catch on to what's going on but who always has a smile on his face, and is quick to put himself between trouble and anyone who needs protection.
Name: Gindar al'Takri Race: Human Variant Class: Cleric Subclass: Life Background: Far Traveler Backstory (brief): Gindar stepped off the gangplank, taking his first good look at the city that would be his home for...who knew how long. Another passenger, a surly dwarf, jostled him as she also disembarked and barked something at him in Dwarvish, something insulting. "My apologies, madame," he said contritely, realizing how rude he'd been standing at the foot of the gangplank, blocking everyone behind him. He stepped to one side and continued to study the city, Fort Imma he'd been told.
It looked nothing like home, smelled nothing like home but...was home now. He could never go back. Kistlea, beautiful, white Kistlea, the sparkling jewel of The Theocracy of the Ten, home to the soaring spires of countless cathedrals was as dead to him as the burned out husk of the Cathedral of Peace. "Theocracy of the Ten? Not anymore. Theocracy of the Nine, now that they've outlawed worship of Kirdani, Goddess of Peace," he said quietly to himself. The thought of his fellow priests, the acolytes, so many cut down in their beds, their homes, even in their churches. And why? Because Archpriest Sylla had counseled against the pogroms against the northern tribes, and vehemently opposed them. If only the Protector's family hadn't been slaughtered in a raid by tribes, maybe the hatred of tribes wouldn't have grown, grown so hot it spilled out until followers of Kirdani had been branded as collaborators with the tribes. It hadn't helped that so many of his brethren spent time with the tribes, healing and teaching as they did for all. But that was the past. This was his present and future.
By the grace of the goddess he'd been at the Retreat in the Woods when word reached it of the massacres in the cities. The Abbess had ordered them all to flee the Theocracy and he'd been fortunate indeed to get on a ship headed...well at the time he'd not known where but anywhere was preferable to staying.
"And now, long months later, I am here," he said sadly. A passing sailor looked at him oddly, no doubt wondering about his accent. He smiled at her, then turned resolutely to his new home, his hand moving up to stroke the tiny snout of his flying snake familliar, Himple. "Let us see what the Goddess has in store for us, hmm?"

Backstory: Kiefer was the only daughter of an affluent family from Adyria (or whatever city the magic school is in). She studied magic like her parents and through her family connections, was accepted as an apprentice at the prestigious school of magic. There she showed much promise and quickly rose through the ranks despite her non-elven heritage, along with her faithful familiar, Khelben, specialising in Evocation magic. She was offered a position in the organisation tasked to prevent a repeat of the Shadow Empire. One day, she was attacked by an unknown assailant. She was told later that she very nearly died. She recovered, but something was not right. Although physically whole, her mind was veiled in fog. She could no longer remember any of her spells, her spellbook was missing, and Khelben was nowehere in sight. Kiefer rested, trying to recover her mind. But after many months, she remained dizzy, nauseated, had trouble with speech and worst of all, could not retain any spells in her memory long enough to cast them. The school had no choice but to oust her. She returned home and began the long process of recovery. After many months of painful effort, she finally managed to cast Find Familiar to resurrect Khelben. To her amazement, he retained nearly all of her knowledge. He could recite with perfect detail most of what she had learned through her years of study, akin to an encyclopaedia. Kiefer renamed Khelben to Roro, a word meaning "brain". "You are my brain now, Roro, because mine is broken" Kiefer considered her future and found no desire to return to the School of Evocation with its associated violence. To offset her disability, Rika thought it best to be thoroughly prepared for what was to come and so turned her attentions to Divination magic. With Roro in tow she set out into the world, relying on self-taught magic to find herself, the person who almost killed her, and a way to fix her brain. Traveling by sea, paying her way as a ships wizard, she arrives in Fort Imma following the latest clues in her search.
