I'm recruiting exactly 4 players for another game in the "Frozen Sick" module, that will bring you and your group into the icy north of the Greying Wildlands, trying to solve the mystery around the strange death of a dwarven explorer. If you already played that module, please be so kind to NOT apply and give other players the option to experience it together for the first time.
How will this be played?
The game will be played here in the forum and I will have the time to write a post about 3 times per day.
You should have the time to write at least 2 times a day
If more than 12 h pass and an action from your character is needed to proceed, the character will go on auto mode by the DM until you're back.
If you know, you will be away for longer, please leave a general hint on how your character will act for that time so we can auto mode him
The content of the game will be generally open minded and LGBTQ+ friendly, so don't expect that the parents of kids are always female and male for example.
We will use the DnDBeyond campaigns in the background for rolls so everyone needs a Character on DnDBeyond and link it to the campaign
We will use Standard Array for the stats
Dice Rolls:
Every dice roll of the PCs will be done with DnDBeyonds dice in the Character Sheet so this ends up in the game log.
Dice rolls of the DM are made secretly unless it is vial to the game that everyone sees the result (you gotta trust me in this ;) )
Whenever you think, your character might need a skill check, you can already roll it in advance to speed up the process here
My PbP combat is done this way:
Every player rolls initiative and the highes dice is the initiative of the whole group
NPCs fall below or above this init so we end up with a neat NPC - PlayerCharacters(PC) - NPC list
PCs all post their actions at once. They can do this in any order. I will let you go back and edit actions if you do something contradictory to someone above them on the init list, or I just make easy adjustments myself (e.g. if two people want to move to the same square, and it won't directly impact combat, put one of them one square to the side.)
Once all of the PCs have posted their actions, I post the results of those actions (e.g. whether they hit, etc.), then I handle all of the NPCs and post their actions (the ones below the NPCs first, then a new round starts, then the ones at the top of the init list). Then its the PCs thime again
DnD is meant to be a fun game for everyone. I will mostly stick to the rules, but I allow all sorts of crazy things as long as they are cool and drive the story.
Death and permadeath is part of the game! If you do not want your character to die, either play very well or do not play in this game here ;). I wont actively try to kill anyone, but death can happen!
Content wise, you can use Tashas and Xanthars and you may discuss the character creation with me if you want to add some cool stuff at the beginning.
I use the following homebrew rules
Karma instead of Inspiration: I will reward you and your characters for good gaming in many ways. Exceptional clever solutions in fights, immersive roleplaying or colourful descriptions of what your character does and the likes. Whenever that happens you will get 1d6 karma points. They can stack up as much as you like. You can use them for this:
Use 1 karma point to alter the outcome of any of your d20 by +1 or -1 whenever you like (1:1 spending). You can spend more than one point to change the same dice roll. So a 5 on a d20 can be pushed to a 15 by spending 10 karma points
Use 2 karma points to alter a d20 by +1 or -1 rolled by another player or the DM! (2:1 spending). You can spend more than one point to change the same dice roll. So a 15 on a d20 of an enemy can be pushed down to a 9 by spending 2x6 = 12 karma points
NAT1 and NAT20 do not change by that and you cannot create a NAT1 or NAT20 with it, although you can create a 1 or a 20. It simply would not count as NAT.
Death Saving Rolls are done different:
They are rolled secretly by the DM so no one knows the result, not even the player of the character, to prevent meta gaming and improve the experience for everyone. ( Knowing, that the 0HP friend on the ground has already passed 2 successful rolls and has 0 fails, why should i spend my precious spell slot to heal him? He will most probably be okay by one of the next rolls. <- This is meta gaming)
The instant a creature drops to 0HP, the DM rolls the first Death Saving (he does not wait until the next turn). Given that a NAT1 would mean 2 immediate fails, the next roll can already kill the character or enemy. Not knowing, what as been rolled, the other players now need to rush to their fallen friends immediately. This pushes up the tension and prevents fallen comrades from possible 6 rounds of doing nothing more than rolling dice.
Also: Dropping to 0HP you go unconscious by the book. If an unconscious creature takes damage it gets an immediate death saving fail by the book. If the one that causes the damage is within 5ft, then this is critical again, meaning 2 immediate death saving fails. This sounds thrilling and now you are afraid of dying in each and every battle? Good! That's what it's made for.
Creating Objects, Magic Items, Potions etc uses the XGTE rules with some alterations. For example, you can craft a potion of healing within one long rest, if you have the experience, a free spell slot, knowledge of cure wounds or something like it, a brewery kit or herbalism kit or alchemy kit, some place to brew the potion, a bottle, and the ingredients needed. There will be recipes for things like that, but given you have the materials you can craft way faster than the book suggests. This shifts the focus from time to ingredients when crafting things. The same rules apply for magic items, but the ingredients for them will be very hard to find, depending on their rarity and your skill.
What you should bring to the table/froum:
Enough experience to create your character in DnDBeyond and link it to the campaign later and make some dice rolls within the sheet. Preferably you have played some sessions of DnD before
Good social skills! (I won't accept harassment of any kind. Everyone will get their moments to shine so need for downing others.)
Patience: This is PbP, so be patient if someone does not answer for a couple of hours
Posting at least 2 times a day to get the story going
Accepting that death is something that can happen to your character although we all try to avoid it
Have fun in playing a nice DnD game

Simple backstory. went into the army service when he was young. Became very good at it, but wanted the freedom to fight for whomever he wants, when he wants. Decided to be an adventurer.

Xerim Phimm is a silver dragon. His clan lived in the outskirts of The Frozenfar. He is a soldier who specialize in combat and healing from the front lines. His mother is an acolyte and his father was a well renowned soldier. He began his training at a very young age, learning to heal first then to fight. At age 16, his father died in a battle against orcs raiding his clan's village. By the age of 21, he then honed his combat ability to fend off the creatures, but his mother died in that combat. Sad and depressed, the elders in the clan felt that it was time or him to venture off and explore the world. He hesitates to the suggestion but it would give great honor to his clan and to his parents. He sets off leaving his clan and his past behind for the first time.
Played pbp dnd quite awhile. Love writing and being descriptive.
Dean (warforge) worked as a guard for a wizard keep for many years where he studied the scripts and kept the "real" wizards safe. He has set off to explore the world and bring back any artifacts, scroll or trinkets that may aid the wizards in the keep. On his journey he is looking to grow as a fighter and wizard in order to better help the wizards he left behind.
How experienced you are in playing Dnd and PbP
I have played over a year of 5E, played some back in the 80s/90s but have never played PBP before but I am looking forward to it.

Please let me know if you have any questions for me, I look forward to hearing from you.
Hiya, full disclosure, I know just about nothing about Critical Role! I have been a DM for over 15 years and done a lot of PbP since DDB opened. I haven't been on the forum for about 2 years or so, but I'm back in the game. I am in EST, which I think is gmt -4?
Elmira is a shifter native to the Greying Wildlands. Likely she is accompanying the party as a guide or the intrigue of a disappearance happening in her homeland has drawn her back. Regardless, she hopes to earn some renown as an adventurer who gets results. Growing up poor and wild, her greatest goal is to retire early, living among the softies of the city without a care in the world.
Thank you for the consideration.
