It's ya boy, Ru. I am not a boy. I am actually an early 30's enby librarian. I have so many games running, but I would like to squeeze in one more!
If you would like to know more about me, I go by Ru and I am in EST (which is GMT -4, I think). I am not super active (by my own standards admittedly), but my goal is to update once a day if not more. I love anime, video games, books, and writing. I mostly love heroic fantasies, horror, romances, and mixtures therein.
What I am looking for
I am looking for players who are okay with there being no other PCs. This is strictly one on one. I think it makes the game move more quickly and gives you even more agency since you don't need to wait for group approval or harmony. Duets are more about story telling, so I will actively try to plot with you on how things roll out, but it will still leave room for surprise. You don't need to be super duper active, since I won't be. I am just looking for someone who will help move the story along and take direct action and not necessarily wait around for the DM to make things happen!
I am looking for adults only (sorry teens) as well. This is just so when we OOC, I can talk about old people thing like having kids, the cost of all these damn books, and yelling at rain clouds. I do have a few fandoms I'm involved in and I enjoy playing videogames, so if you are geeky in that respect, we will get along just fine. I like to OOC a bit, so we can make sure we get along and stuff too. Getting along is important.
Otherwise, please be chill, respectful of queer people, and understand life happens.
If you are already in one of my games, feel free to try your luck!
About the game
This is "Dragons of Stormwreck Isle".. as interpreted by me. I do not own this game or have any access to its contents. I have, however, seen enough reviews of its contents and plot that I think I have a general idea of how it goes. It seems like a fun little story, so I would like to try my hand at DMing it with just the roughest possible outline. For that reason, it doesn't matter if you have played it or not or read the adventure -- because I will mostly making stuff up around the things I have heard and read about!
Few players? But how will combat be fair? This game will have recruitable NPCs that will act as your sidekicks and will be roleplayed by me, but controlled by you in combat. They will be NPCs you normally encounter in the adventure as well as a few I sprinkle in myself. Sidekicks can range from enemies you befriended, beasts you tamed, or that random NPC I made up that you won't shut up about. You simply need to ask them to join your party and they probably will if they like you enough. When possible, you can choose what sidekick statblock will be associated with your Sidekick NPCs, but some of them will be assigned by me because the NPC is clearly a spellcaster, roguish character, or similar circumstances.
What about character creation? We are starting at level 1, using point buy, and 1 free feat at level 1. Each ASI you can have a feat and a stat improvement. Races I'm accepting are from player's handbook + changelings + races from Van Richten's, no others. Variant human allowed, but custom origin is not. If you want to reflavor an existing race, go for it in your application. It might be tweaked in the real game, but I am flexible. Class restrictions are simply no artificers or Critical Role's gunslinger, blood hunter, or echo knight. No dipping hexblade! Multiclassing is allowed, of course, but we will have to have in story reasons why your character suddenly has xyz powers. You can have any background except Strixhaven. You can also suggest a background and what skills/tools/languages you might get from it as well as an RP feature.
I ask you take a personal goal from one of the premade character sheets and work it into your character concept.
The Application
Please submit your application using the following form. Don't worry about creating an actual character sheet unless you are picked! I will be picking probably in the next 2-3 days. It depends on the response to this thread.
Form: A couple sentences about you as a player and what you are looking for in a game: Your time zone:

This sounds fantastic and I think we'd get along well, although admittedly mostly just for the rain cloud inspired yelling! I've always wanted to try a duet type game and appreciate the thought you've put into your initial post here.
Will read a bit more about this such as the premade character backgrounds for inspiration and submit a character application.
Character Name: Arash Race: half-orc Starting Class: monk Starting Feat: orcish fury Background: hermit Backstory: see below Personal Goal: discover hidden/forgotten knowledge (tied to his Discovery background feature)
Arash is a half-orc whose mother was a slave and passed ahead of her time due to mistreatment by his own orc band. In a fit of rage, he murdered a few of them and ran off. A shady monastic order of assassins saw potential in him and exploited his rage to recruit and train him. Eventually, he realized that he did not want to become what the order wanted him to become, so again he broke loose and became a traveling hermit.
Few Sentences: Been playing dnd and DMing for over the past year. I enjoy the flexibility of PbP and enjoy the 3 pillars. I hope for a fun game with some challenges.
Time Zone: PST
Name: Dagny
Race: Changeling
Class: Bard
Feat: Inspiring Leader
Background: Urchin
Backstory: Dagny was raised on the streets, by his uncle Thib the Enchanting Storyteller. They were barely scraping by and sometimes Dagny had to get what they needed by stealing. He was actually decent at it especially with his heritage, but Uncle Thib would have none of that saying it sullied their family's reputation. Supposedly he was descended from aristocrats. It began as a family obligation, but over time he grew to enjoys the stories and learning about music. Soon Dagny earned his keep by performing at taverns and dive bars. One night he came home to find a note that his uncle decided to leave and that it was time Dagny found out what the world had to offer. With lyre in hand he headed out of the town he had known his whole life. The world can be scary, but that sunrise that morning seem to be beckoning him to new horizons.
Personal Goal:To improve and to find the Whimsy song mentioned by his uncle. It changes and bucks like a bronco when a someone tries to play it, but a true master can hear what the song was meant to be all along. Well that is if they live long enough.
A couple sentences about you as a player and what you are looking for in a game: Hi! I've been playing D&D for many years, and have experience both playing in and running games. When I'm not playing D&D, I love writing, performing theatre, and consuming media (mostly video games and anime, but I have been getting better lately about watching TV and movies too). I think D&D is at its best when it is like a performance or story. All my characters are objective-driven and want to fulfill their goals. I'm also a sucker for drama, romance, tragedy, comedy, the whole nine yards. I've run a duet via video chat before, never PbP, but I do have a lot of experience with PbP as well as text forum roleplaying from my teenage days. I am an adult (25, he/him pronouns) with no children, but I know a thing or two about costly books and rain clouds.
When their mother stole beans from a hag's garden, Hyacinth was taken in exchange when they were but a baby. The hag, Amaranth, raised Hyacinth as her own child in the Feywild, with the hopes that she would become a member of a coven with Amaranth and her sister Nightshade. However, Hyacinth was appalled by the horrible antics of Amaranth, who would cook lost souls into pies and make wicked deals with mortals that hurt them in the end. They spent their days warning Feywild denizens and lost mortals alike away from their mother's cottage. When they were about to come of age, they fled Amaranth's home and wandered in the Feywild for a long time. They made many friends, like a shy bunch of prankster gnomes who made them laugh and taught them to love nature; a herd of satyrs that taught them to use a bow and dance a mean jig; even an old moonstone dragon who taught them the draconic tongue. But one day, Hyacinth accidentally wandered out of the Feywild and found themselves in mortal world. When they did, they were plagued with dreams of a dark shadow that threatened to devour everything in its path, and a voice calling them to action in order to stop it. Always wanting to be the hero of their own fairy tale, the good-intentioned Hyacinth took up their bow and set out on their latest adventure!
Personal Goal: The premade goal on the dwarf cleric sheet, "Banish a Shadow of Death." Hyacinth doesn't want anyone to get hurt by this creepy shadow, so they want to stop it before it can rear its head. Anything else to note: Hyacinth doesn't care much for gender as a concept and goes by any pronouns. With their lilac skin and horns, most people may assume they are a tiefling of some kind. A couple sentences about you as a player and what you are looking for in a game: I have been playing D&D for about 5 years now. I guess you could say I've rediscovered it as many years ago I was playing D&D on on MUX without knowing what I was actually doing. lol. Being a parent it's been tough to carve out time for a live campaign so I turned to PbP.. Anyway, I'm down for whatever type of game. I guess with this character I'm looking to explore and find knowledge. Your time zone: U.S. Central
Character Name: Daisy Holderheck Race: Hill Dwarf Starting Class: Druid (planned Circle of Moon) Starting Feat: Chef Background: Farmer (custom). Suggested proficiencies - Skills: Survival, Nature; Tool: Land Vehicles; 1 Language Backstory:
Daisy lives only to protect her family, or what's left of it. She had been responsible for most of the cooking and running the household. However, recently things have been rough for the dwarf since her husband, Garlik (Sr.), didn't come back from one of his weekend hunts; his friends said they thought it was a manticore that snatched him up. But Daisy knows that Garlik is a tough s.o.b. and not one to lay down for anything. As a result, she was left to run the farm with her elderly father, Tygven, and her two boys, Tyvan and Junior.
Struggling to keep the farm running in Garlik's absence, Daisy sought out the advice and wisdom from an old hermit that lives in the nearby woods that seems to have a way with the natural world. Daisy's new knowledge helped turn her farm around in a few seasons, but she was left with a void to be filled - questions to be answered. She left the farm to her father and children, to seek out answers to Garlik's disappearance.
Personal Goal: Rejuvenating Pilgrimage - It's been a few months since Daisy left the farm. She is running out of trails of follow and her faith in find her husband is dwindling. She sought out new knowledge once before and is will to do so again if she thinks it may give answers to the whereabouts of her husband. Anything else to note: One of my early PbP attempts on this forum was a solo campaign that ended after about a month. So I'm familiar with having to be the only one to drive the story. It is still one of the most fun games I played here. I mean who doesn't like the spotlight on them 100% of the time... I work for home, so I have the ability post throughout the week. A couple sentences about you as a player and what you are looking for in a game: Hi Ru! As stated above I think we'd get along really well based on your description. I'm a new dad who enjoys Play-By-Post as a great format to fit D&D into my work, family, etc. routine. I'm generally available quite a bit during the week and some weekends while others could get busy with family activities. Your time zone: EST Character Name: Daharuk ('Rook') Veneroth Race: Metallic Dragonborn Starting Class: Fighter (Eldritch Knight planned) Starting Feat: Magic Initiate (Wizard) to establish that newly learned magic early Background: Inheritor Backstory: Rook lived a simple life with adoptive human parents and happily helped them on their farm when he and his new father were not conscripted into the local reagents armies during times of war. Although always dutiful and appreciative of his parents, neither farming nor war sparked Rook's true interest as much as reading about history, astrology and magic and, of course, playing chess. Unfortunately Rook had little practical use for such knowledge and few peers in his world with similar interests. Truth be told Rook was a bit jealous of the one other dragonborn he had met, a powerful and high ranking sorcerer in the army. Rook wondered why he could not perform such arcane magic, whether it be through draconic lineage or rigorous study. Still living a happy life Rook's nights were occasionally tormented by dreams of a terrible darkness engulfing an island, dreams that left him shaken and fearful each time.
It was not until Rook met an elderly wizard on the road near his farm that his life changed. The wizard was ailing and weary from travel and Rook invited him to the farm for supper and a warm bed. The two became fast friends but unfortunately the man's weary state turned to frailty and in less than a year Rook's friend had passed. In the meantime however the wizard taught Rook his first spell and, eventually, the subject of his dreams arose. To his shock the wizard had sketches in his notes of the very image of an island Rook had dreamed of all of his life. The wizard had notes on Stormwreck Isle, an Elder named Runara, a temple to Bahamut, and perhaps most interestingly an arcane observatory built on a nearby island by wizards long gone and powerful magic that may be hidden there. The wizard had intended to seek this place out but instead left his spell book and the notes to Rook, encouraging him to seek out the destiny his dreams had hinted at for oh so long.
Personal Goal: Hope it was ok to combine several of them in the backstory above. A few of the specifics in bold there.
Anything else to note: I could see taking levels in wizard if the story suddenly delivers Rook a boon of knowledge or is otherwise appropriate. I like to let the story guide my character developement, personality, changing goals, etc. rather than decide ahead of time exactly how my character will act, what their mechanical build will be, etc. Thanks for your consideration!!!
A couple sentences about you as a player and what you are looking for in a game: Thanks for your great post and creative ideas! RP, character development and relationships, and story-building is my favorite part of D&D, and it sounds like you share this love too! I've never tried a duet style, but as you describe it I can definitely see the benefit in having the opportunity to really go deep. I've also got a busy schedule and have little time for games outside of PBP, so I appreciate that you like a more easygoing pace that puts real life needs first.
I love Rook, by the way. What a seeker of knowledge. If we were forming a party I'd pick him!

Character Name: Meriele Race: Human Starting Class: Paladin OR Cleric OR Celestial Warlock (depending on what best fits the story/mechanic) Starting Feat: Inspiring Leader Background: Outlander Backstory:
Born to human parents in a simple village, at a very young age, Meriele was visited by an angelic being named Pahadron. He spoke to her in dreams and gave her instructions, and showed her visions of the danger the world was in from the forces of evil, and how those outside of the safety nets of society were in much danger. She grew up with these visions, often startling her parents with questions and stories that had them wondering if she was secretly frequenting local temples. Enthusiastic as any youth, when she was coming of age, Meriele asked Pahadron for the task to join the celestial forces to help stop evil in the world. Pahadron warned her that this would require great sacrifice from her, that she would have to become an outcast herself. She was willing---and then touched by the magic of the celestial realms, the battle began. She was set apart, she looked different somehow, and she could no longer pretend any acceptance of evil. It only took a couple of miraculous healings to draw the attention of malignant supernatural forces to try and kill her, and to protect her family and community she had to run. Pahadron guided her in dreams to a safe desert location, and while at times she raged and wept at what her life had become, she never wavered that it was worth to live this life. Knowing that for their own protection she couldn't really be part of normal society, she waited on Pahadron's guidance over the years to show her people and places where she could do good. She traveled in this way, always keeping her luminous features covered in a hooded robe, and Pahadron slowly prepared her to become a holy warrior to save souls from darkness.
Personal Goal: Banish a Shadow of Death Anything else to note: This character was originally written as an Aasimar, but I certainly don't think that's necessary, and I thought it was actually more fun to make her just a human who had taken a mystical and unusual path. I've tried a couple of iterations of her in different PBP games, both of which ended prematurely, so I'm curious to see how she develops and what kind of allies and connections she does end up making. Her celestial "patron" I imagine as being the purview of the DM and can be as present or as distant as works for the story, or could even be recast or reflavored (say as a deity or as a different kind of being).
I'm not taking apps anymore and I have chosen one person so far. I am considering taking another one or two on. I'll contact the additional players inside a day. Otherwise, if you don't hear from me, sorry, I couldn't pick you.
Everyone had great apps! I wish I could take a small group, but I find those hard to DM for in PbP.

Personal Goal:
Hope it was ok to combine several of them in the backstory above. A few of the specifics in bold there.
Anything else to note:
I could see taking levels in wizard if the story suddenly delivers Rook a boon of knowledge or is otherwise appropriate.

Character Name: Meriele
Race: Human
Starting Class: Paladin OR Cleric OR Celestial Warlock (depending on what best fits the story/mechanic)
Starting Feat: Inspiring Leader
Background: Outlander
Backstory:
Personal Goal: Banish a Shadow of Death
Anything else to note: This character was originally written as an Aasimar, but I certainly don't think that's necessary, and I thought it was actually more fun to make her just a human who had taken a mystical and unusual path.
