Lost Mine of Phandelver is the quintessential beginner's adventure for D&D 5e, although that doesn't mean only new players can enjoy it. It's an adventure for four to five characters of 1st 3rd level. That's right, for this particular campaign we are frontloading exp so that players may start at level 3. This does mean that those familiar with the module may find a few new surprises along the way to keep things interesting. The adventure is set a short distance from the city of Neverwinter in the Sword Coast region of the Forgotten Realms setting. The Sword Coast is part of the North — a vast realm of free settlements surrounded by wilderness and adventure. You don’t need to be a Forgotten Realms expert to play in this adventure; I assure you your DM is not.
Okay, sounds good. How do we play?
First, you need to be 18+. There's nothing here that pushes any boundaries, I just want to play with other adults. Next you need the ability to make the character you want to play here on D&D Beyond. That means you need to have a free character slot so that you are able to add them to the campaign if invited to join. The game itself will be played via a private Discord server using the Avrae bot to help sync your D&D Beyond character sheet. Prior knowledge of Avrae is helpful but as we are only using it for basic rolls it is not difficult to learn. Battlemaps will be handled through Owlbear Rodeo, specifically chosen for how easy it is for newcomers to pick up and immediately understand. The fact it doesn't require an account registration and works well on most mobile devices is also nice for PbP. The goal is to have a decently paced game with players who prefer to make multiple posts daily.
Cool, what are you looking for in a player?
A welcoming and accepting attitude towards all people regardless of their similarities or differences to yourself is essential. Making rude or disrespectful comments is not okay and will get you a single warning or immediately kicked depending on the severity. “It was just a joke” is not a defense I care about. Likewise, the time-honored tradition of “it’s something my character would say” will not fly. Make a different character that wouldn’t say that.
Lack of consistent interaction is the #1 killer of PbP games so there’s an absolute hard minimum of one post a day but multiple back and forth posts in a day are expected if players are available. Real life takes priority but if you’re going to be unavailable for several days you must notify the group. If you ghost for multiple days it will be assumed you quit and you will be removed. Life happens and situations change, if you need to step back from the campaign you are expected to give notice. Player choice and post frequency will highly impact the duration but I expect this campaign to last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. I recognize that it is a huge time commitment even though it's spread out just a little each day. Please do not apply if you expect to not be available for the majority of this time frame.
Players should not be passive observers. Shy or stoic character personalities are fine but not an excuse to interact with the story less. One of the advantages PbP offers is the ability to easily communicate internal thoughts for these types of character archetypes. Be descriptive of your actions, particularly the first time you display them. You don’t need to describe what your sword looks like or the sound it makes every time you swing but you should absolutely be doing that the first time so everyone else gets a clear picture of what is in your mind. I give players a lot of creative liberty to describe their actions provided they fall within the basic rule framework.
That sounds like me! How do I apply?
