Looking for 1 replacement player, who will be willing to play a fighter-type (fighter, barbarian, paladin). Your origin story, will also be a little bit different, which we will discuss when selected. I am only keeping this open for a maximum of 24 hours. Please make sure you read this post and understand that you will be selecting from a partially pre-generated character.
Calling adventurous souls.
Starting a campaign using some old Fantasy tropes. Specifically, the characters will be from our “real” world and transported into, not only a world of fantasy, but also into other bodies. I have a concept of the world and the overall campaign, but it will be very much a “build as we go”.
Four players will choose from partiallygenerated characters. Each is Human, and I have selected a Class, rolled stats, selected a background and starting gold. When rolling stats, I picked the first set that had at least one 16 or greater roll.
Play will be primarily M-F (I am in EST), and I will be adjusting some of the Monsters to make things more interesting, and I am hoping for players to actively check (and post) at least once a day; with holidays and vacations excluded. And by responding to this recruitment thread, you are acknowledging that you will attempt to meet this expectation.
I will also use World Anvil to document the world and summarize the game “day’s” events, maps, NPC’s, and quests.
If you are interested, then give me some information on your backstory. I encourage you to utilize tropes to make it a bit easier.
What is your background that defines you in real life? Where you the H.S. jock who blew the big game or the nerdy, fantasy/sci-fi brainiac?
How did your life turn out after?
Why are you on a red-eye flight from Chicago to Washington D.C.?
Will you really want to return to the real world? If so, which is your driver and if not, what is your driver for wanting to stay?
I would encourage you to play a character against the background you are defining. Something to challenge its development.
Once I pick the players, we will roll d20 for order of selecting characters.
I will leave this thread open till 12EST 21-Nov, and plan to start on 28-Nov assuming that the characters get flushed out before then.
Background - Diamond Hightower was pretty popular kind throughout highschool. He had his own dance crew and competed annually in talent shows. He was friends with both the cheerleaders , the student council and the nerds but no matter who he hung out with he never felt like he truely belonged.
Life after- He briefly tried to start projects but eventually settled into the cycle of working at an irrigation company and playing video games with his party Ram Ramirez.
On the flight- The flight is actually just a connecting flight from Washington to Georgia as his company was sending him over to assist in the management of inventory at their east coast sister company.
Returning- The only real reason he might want to return is to be with his partner again. As life had given him a pretty normal existence one with adventure and potential powers would make this decision extremely hard.

Discord play-by-post lover. Hater of westmarches. Just gimme some character driven gameplay please.
Background: James Anderson had pretty much everything handed to him in life. He was star of the HS basketball team, was one of the most popular boys at school, and got all the girls. He practically had NBA scouts at his doorstep until he missed the last shot of the grand final, suddenly all that went out the window.
Life After: For the few years after HS, James moved around, doing different jobs for different people. He was unable to get any proper high up job due to not trying in school. Life was pretty depressing for him and the only one keeping him from giving up was his mum, who had not abandoned him after HS like everyone else.
Why on the Flight: James’ mum was getting some experimental cancer treatment in Washington, but it wasn’t working and she was meant to die in a couple weeks or so. James was on the plane to go to his mothers side.
Returning: James’ only reason to go home is to see his mum. Apart from her everything in his life has been pretty crap, so that’s really his only reason to return.
Background: Chadwick Evanston III is one privileged bastard. No, that's not accurate, at least as far as we know, his mother did not cheat on his father before his birth. Charmed life, although his academic performance left much to be desired due to his hedonism, and after a brief military career, diverted his career from law to finance and hasn't looked back, throwing money at fast cars, loose women, living life as loud and fast as he can to fill the gaping void within him.
How did your life turn out after? On a surface level, Chad is wildly successful. Going deeper, he is a chaotic mess of neuroses, cracking under the strain.
Why are you on a red-eye flight from Chicago to Washington D.C.? Business, why else? It's not liked I packed a gun and researched guard patterns on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to shoot myself without being stopped.
Will you really want to return to the real world? If so, which is your driver and if not, what is your driver for wanting to stay? I think this is a mixed bad for Chad. I think the strain of the new world will knock him out of the mental abyss he is in and want a return to his comfortable hedonistic life. But it could also lead to healing and growth

What is your background that defines you in real life? Where you the H.S. jock who blew the big game or the nerdy, fantasy/sci-fi brainiac? Greg was born in a conservative religious family. He lived in a small town where he played sports and did nothing else despite what interested him. Sure he liked to play and watch sports but also secretly loved comic books, sci fi and fantasy books, and role playing video games. He did well in school and was friendly to everyone but no one knew he real Greg.
How did your life turn out after? Greg went to college, first in his family to do so. He left his home and went to college in Chicago to become a history teacher. He went through college much like high school, hiding his passions. He stopped playing sports but hid his love of "nerdy" things. He graduated from college and quickly got a job teaching in Chicago where he has been for the last few years.
Why are you on a red-eye flight from Chicago to Washington D.C.? He was headed to Washington D.C. for a teacher conference on the Constitution, founding fathers, and beginnings of America. The Chicago winter held his plane up forcing the red eye flight.
Will you really want to return to the real world? If so, which is your driver and if not, what is your driver for wanting to stay? Meandering through life hiding his love of fantasy stories, magic, heroic battles, saving realms might cause him to stay in a world like he has read about since he was a preteen.
This is an interesting concept. I've seen Isekai styled games before, but not quite this exact type.
Background - Kenneth Raymond felt like he was always the background character in someone else's story. He had a very 'go with the flow' attitude, and while that allowed him to succeed at the tasks set before him, he never really stood out by making his own way. He played multiple sports, but never made it beyond the second string for each team. He was a B to B+ student in all his classes.
Why on the flight - He's slated to be one of the Groomsmen at his cousin's wedding, and the wedding is set to happen in the suburbs of D.C.
Returning - In spite of this new world and new life giving him a chance to make his own way via a 'clean slate', Kenneth does still have friends and family back home. He's tired of being another face in the crowd so he wants to stay, but the decision is not an easy one and homesickness makes the struggle harder. Making your own path is not easy, going with the flow is.
What is your background that defines you in real life? Where you the H.S. jock who blew the big game or the nerdy, fantasy/sci-fi brainiac?
Chris Johnson has always been a loner and just different from others around him. Suffering from social anxiety and a myriad of other social problems he has always been more comfortable on his own. Able to interact with others he played a fake image of air headed aloofness while joking and laughing with the rest of his classmates and family never excelling or standing out in any way after all you can’t fail if you never try. As someone who has lived in their comfort zone never taking risks or really living, his only solace’s has been a good loving family and fantasy stories. When reading fantasy books it’s as if he changes the very fabric of his being becoming grand hero’s, despised villains and seeking out untold number of adventures.
How did your life turn out after?
He has grow older the worlds not quite as bright, his family lead their own lives and the stories are his only companion in a world of uncaring indifference. Yet still he dreams of knights, dragons, and adventure
Why are you on a red-eye flight from Chicago to Washington D.C.?
In a rare moment of spontaneity he returns home from watching a premier of a D&D campaign cartoon show he helped sponsor.
Will you really want to return to the real world? If so, which is your driver and if not, what is your driver for wanting to stay?
No he would not return home. Even though the fantasy world comes with wars, blood and death it’s also filled with magic, mystery and adventure. His only regret would be missing his family, but he knows they have their own lives to live and even if he passes in this strange new world at least for a moment his dreams became real.
Background - Jordan Gale has always been scrawny and shy. Train as he might, he was never able to build muscle mass, and communication wasn't is forte, so he was a prime target for bullies throughout his school years. This made him wary of strangers, and he built pretty thick mental defenses. No one could say he was BAD looking though, he was attractive in his own right, but his lack of confidence from years of being put down meant he wasn't appealing to girls either.
Life after- He kept doing was he could do best: play video games. It so happened that in the day and age he was born in, making a living out of video games was a thing! Streamer (without showing his face), he was happy to stay home and finally appeal to people who couldn't bash him for his physical appearance. He was actually pretty well known on Twitch.
On the flight- He was going to Twitch Con for the first time of his life. He was finally able to build up the confidence and courage to get out and participate. He was a mess of anxiety and trepidation.
Returning- At first, he would most certainly see this as an opportunity to live his dream: be IN a video game. But once it becomes clear that he COULD die in this world and that this possibility is actually quite higher than in the real world, he may revise his opinion. He'll most likely jump back and forth between wanting to stay and wanting to go back.
This isn't a concept I've seen for a game before. Sounds like it would be fascinating.
Background- Aaron Wyler grew up with dreams of being the popular sports star, but it was never to be. A crippling case of asthma put a stop to most of those goals at a a young age, and while he jealously watched those without his issue from afar, he could only participate vicariously. While not necessarily disliked by anyone, the his rural home didn't exactly leave many other routes towards forming relationships, and so he occupied his time with books on the sidelines. He could be relied on to know a fact or statistic on demand, but was always easily distracted by what he wished he could do instead of read about.
Life After- This eventually led to a comfortable, if boring life in accounting. Eternally a bachelor, he's been working on fixing up his underdeveloped social skills recently. None would call him truly neurotic, but he has a certain organization and order to all that he does.
On Flight- DC is the city of monuments and museums; the perfect vacation spot for someone who would love to study history and war memorials. Unfortunately, he had to shift his flight tickets around for work and wound up on the red eye.
Returning- Initially, the possibility of a body that lets him live out his more physical fantasies would be a dream. The question would be if his more introspective side feels he is losing part of himself by living out a lie. Or would that be okay if he forgot it was a lie?
Been interested in an isekai-ish game and the idea of playing partially generated characters seems like a fun challenge.
1) What is your background that defines you in real life? Where you the H.S. jock who blew the big game or the nerdy, fantasy/sci-fi brainiac? At a glance, Jon was handed the short stick in life. At the age of two, a terrible car crash took away both of his legs, sentencing him to a life in a wheel chair. Although this seemed cause for a poor outlook on life, Jon had extremely supportive parents who ensured their boy was equipped physically and mentally to take on life's challenges. Despite his physical handicap, Jon quickly took to computer science and coding. His positive nature was infectious which made many around him appreciate and accept him despite initial appearances.
2) How did your life turn out after? Jon currently studies computer science at the University of Chicago with general success. With many student resources at hand, Jon fell in love with the world of virtual reality. Though he never bickered about losing his legs, Jon fantasized about being able to walk, jump and run. In the VR world, Jon could do that and so much more.
3) Why are you on a red-eye flight from Chicago to Washington D.C.? Jon was on the flight to attend Techspo in Washington DC.
4) Will you really want to return to the real world? If so, which is your driver and if not, what is your driver for wanting to stay? Though he'd miss his parents, Jon would likely stay in the new world. The world of fantasy offers so much that he missed out on and more, so why would he ever go back?!
1. What is your background that defines you in real life? Where you the H.S. jock who blew the big game or the nerdy, fantasy/sci-fi brainiac? If you were to ask anyone who knew her in High School, they would've told you that Ivanna Ru was the only true straight-A student out of everyone in her year. Academics was practically her middle name, considering how little everyone saw of her outside of the local library. Not to say she didn't have friends, the few who had managed to get her to put her book down knew her a bit differently from the rest of the social circles. Fondly referred to as 'Ivy' by her high school friends, Ivanna quite enjoyed going out for smoothie bowls and ice skating--even if she always had a textbook PDF open on her phone.
2. How did your life turn out after? As the classic story goes, academic burnout hit hard as Ivanna entered medical school. Her parents, having immigrated from rural China, only wanted the best for their little girl. They claimed that she would make the family prouder than ever once she successfully earned her MD. Unfortunately for them, Ivanna found herself just barely pulling through sleepless nights. Her new college friends would tell her to loosen up, go out and get a couple of drinks. She ended up becoming the go-to sober friend that people would find holding up others on the curb. Dropping out of medical school was hard, she had spent all that time studying, and for what? But the look on her parents' faces when she came out? Now that was the real kicker.
3. Why are you on a red-eye flight from Chicago to Washington D.C.? After the disaster that was her coming out to her parents, Ivanna needed to rediscover her passions somewhere that was far, far, away from the ever-disappointed expression of her family. Chicago was nice, but Washington D.C. was the place to be if she wanted to get a grasp on her newly turned leaf of life.
4. Will you really want to return to the real world? If so, which is your driver and if not, what is your driver for wanting to stay? Ivanna doesn't have too much of a reason to return to the real world now that she has lost her direction in life. Though she'd hate to leave on bad terms with her parents, she finds it unlikely that they'd accept her with wide arms anytime soon. Finding her true passion in a world of fantasy would be a leading factor in wanting to stay there, though she could also be convinced by the chance of romance...
What is your background that defines you in real life? Where you the H.S. jock who blew the big game or the nerdy, fantasy/sci-fi brainiac?
If you had to discide Norman Hall in a world it would be 'who". He is the most average guy you've met, middle class family, older brother the four ball star, younger sister the genius. In high school he was not popular or an outcast, played sports all 4 years, was an A student, had a job ect, besides all this he never stood out good or bad.
How did your life turn out after?
Unable to get a scholarship he is now swimming in debt working 100 hours a week as a Personal Assistant for a boss who thinks his name is 'John, James or Jack". Norman's life sucks.
Why are you on a red-eye flight from Chicago to Washington D.C.?
Norman is on his 5th red eye that week to complete yet another tasjerhis boss could not be bothered to do him self. This time it was to layoff employees at a mom and pop company that his company just bought.
Will you really want to return to the real world? If so, which is your driver and if not, what is your driver for wanting to stay?
At first yes he will do everything in his power to get back afraid of losing his job. In time not sure will see how his character growth goes.
1) What is your background that defines you in real life? Where you the H.S. jock who blew the big game or the nerdy, fantasy/sci-fi brainiac? Jordi was a talented student with helicopter parents who spent all his time studying and had very little social life in High school. His parents wanted him to be a doctor or lawyer or politician, and all his efforts were bent on pleasing his parents.
2) How did your life turn out after? Jordi got a full ride scholarship to Georgetown University, double-majoring in pre-med and pre-law. Shortly after arrival, however, the freedom of being out from under his parents' watchful eyes overcame him, and he took to partying and skipping class. His first-semester grades were dismal. He went home for Christmas break, but couldn't bear to break the news to his parents that he might lose his scholarship. Before he could tell them, they were both killed in a Christmas-Day car accident. He is totally numb with confusion, grief, and unsure what is next for him.
3) Why are you on a red-eye flight from Chicago to Washington D.C.? Jordi is returning for his second semester of freshman year at Georgetown, recently orphaned, and struggling to keep his scholarship.
4) Will you really want to return to the real world? If so, which is your driver and if not, what is your driver for wanting to stay? Jordi is in shock. The 'real world' has turned out very different that he expected. He needs to find out who he really is, and what he really wants.
1) What is your background that defines you in real life? Where you the H.S. jock who blew the big game or the nerdy, fantasy/sci-fi brainiac? From a young age, Thomas didn't seem like the kind of man to be successful. He was lazy, overbearing, and a general menace. However, despite his lows, he was blessed with something. A brain. Thomas was quick-witted could smooth talk his way out of almost anything, and that smart mouth and knack for lies led to his downfall; a large sum of his brother's money lent to some joe-schmo for some elaborate get-rich-quick scheme. After this event, he felt extremely guilty, and decided to change his life for the better through a promise with his brother.
2) How did your life turn out after? Thomas, due to his quick wit and smooth mouth, is now an aggressive defense attorney who runs his own small law firm, "Murrin and Associates". However, despite his promise, he still has committed crimes like evidence tampering and money laundering.
3) Why are you on a red-eye flight from Chicago to Washington D.C.? His newest client's trial has been shifted location, from the quiet town of New Hope PA, to the bustling capital of the U.S!
4) Will you really want to return to the real world? If so, which is your driver and if not, what is your driver for wanting to stay? Of course he'd like to return! He's got a company and career to hold up, but he's not opposed leaving this new world.

What is your background that defines you in real life? Where you the H.S. jock who blew the big game or the nerdy, fantasy/sci-fi brainiac? In real life, I (Janie) am introspective who likes to people watch and know what their thoughts are. I enjoy reading, though I wouldn’t say I’m a straight A girl. I’ve been told I have an old soul and can be very empathetic to others.
How did your life turn out after? In game life? I’d (Dagny, my assumed name) be disappointed that I’m not more outgoing. Not necessarily shy, but certainly not a very sharing of who I am kind of person and I still keep many of my same traits who just likes to people watch and know what they are thinking or where they are going or doing.
Why are you on a red-eye flight from Chicago to Washington D.C.? My older brother, Scott, has finally convinced me to leave home and see other places. She lives in D.C. but works at the Pentagon as an engineer for DARPA. What better way to travel with the fewest passengers, but also the most intriguing passengers. I mean, why is everyone else on a red-eye flight from Chicago to D.C.?
Will you really want to return to the real world? If so, which is your driver and if not, what is your driver for wanting to stay. No, I still have the opportunity to be something different than who I really am and I’m super curious about wherever I ended up in this world and the folks in it.
What is your background that defines you in real life? Where you the H.S. jock who blew the big game or the nerdy, fantasy/sci-fi brainiac?
Hazel Morgan was your typical quiet, mousy girl at highscool. Messy hair, baggy clothes, crystal earrings, and always had a stack of books with her. Titles like Spell Book for New Witches, Blackthorn's Botanical Magic, and she always smelled like the new essential oils she’d been mixing. She studied moon phases, astrology and tarot cards. Hazel believed in past and afterlives, talks to animals and plants like they could understand her, and meticulously writes down spells she found in books in her little notebook. During homeroom, girls would gather around her table asking her to do fortune-telling, asking question like if their crash likes them back. Hazel loved the world and was appreciative and thankful of everything, despite living a hard life herself with a single mother in a tiny apartment. She never lost her childlike sense of wonder.
How did your life turn out after?
Hazel never went to college after highschool. She started a little shop online selling essential oils, healing crystals, artisan soaps, and magic “potions”. See, some plants and oils have a long history of being used in prayer, meditation and divination, in some cases, it can influence spiritual energy to positive outcomes. When she started posting online about her recipes, her videos blew up. The orders came by the hundreds, even thousands, and she had to expand her little shop.
Why are you on a red-eye flight from Chicago to Washington D.C.?
Hazel received an invitation to the National Witchcraft Festival. It was her first time flying, but she was excited. She packed her newest potions, said goodbye to her birds, ready to share them with fellow witches with country music playing in the background.
Will you really want to return to the real world? If so, which is your driver and if not, what is your driver for wanting to stay?
Hazel had always believed the world was magical. This simply proves her belief. She would want to gather as much magic as possible and bring them back to the real world, because, in her words, there’s too little magic in people’s heart. Of course she would like to stay, but she feels it is more important that she goes back to show people that magic truly exists.

Magnus Brock was an excellent student in high school and is currently enrolled at the University of Chicago in his 2nd year.
Why are you on a red-eye flight from Chicago to Washington D.C.?
While he is doing well at school, he has been missing home recently, especially his high school sweetheart who stayed at home in Maryland in a suburb of D.C. Magnus is looking forward to a weekend at home with his girlfriend Dalia and planned to fly into D.C. on Friday morning when something went awry....
Will you really want to return to the real world?
Magnus desperately wants to get back home to Dalia, but may be tempted by an adventurous life beyond endless study, or maybe even a new crush.

While he is doing well at school, he has been missing home recently, especially his high school sweetheart who stayed at home in Maryland in a suburb of D.C. Magnus is looking forward to a weekend at home with his girlfriend Dalia and planned to fly into D.C. on Friday morning when something went awry....
Magnus desperately wants to get back home to Dalia, but may be tempted by an adventurous life beyond endless study, or maybe even a new crush.
Thank you for all the submissions. There are so many interesting backstories this will be hard and might require a bit of randomness to select.
Thanks.
