I am looking to start up a PbP game that will run out of my homebrew world. I want the campaign to start at level 1. Please take a look at the setting site before submitting character ideas. I do have a Master subscription and digital access to quite a few sources, but not all, and would be willing to share if you need the access to create your character. Right now I'd much prefer PHB races only, with the caveat that if you want to play dragonborn, drow, or tiefling, we'd have to have a discussion about how they fit into the world, just because of the existing history of the setting. That said, I am open to those discussions, as I think it could create some really interesting role-playing opportunities.
This is my first advertisement for a PbP on these forums, so if I'm missing key elements of what people want to know, don't hesitate to tell me so I can get things fixed.
Looking forward to the recruiting process and meeting some new online D&D friends. :D
how would you like ability scores done? Name: Azrael Actaeon
race: Human
Class: Bloodhunter
Ability scores: 121716131116
Backstory:
Azrael, was the product between a wander stranger and woman he met once on a journey. upon his birth he was given up by his mother to his father who began to raise him in the ways of monster hunting with other young men.
Azrael liked learning sword play and reading about ruins and ancient mysteries. It was clear as they grew up that his father looked at him differently than his “brothers”. However, as time passed Azrael grew up unconcerned with what others thought. Eventually it came time for him to go out on his own to survive and make coin.
Backstory: Morbrukk was born the way most half orcs are. Even when he was little he was trained to fight for his warband. Just constant fighting for resources. Day in and day out. Morbrukk just got tired of and prayed to the gods to give him the power to end all this once and for all. Vikar heard his prayer and granted him power to conquer all the other orcs.Morbrukk wants to try to and unite the the orcs under one banner and form a united kingdom that is not plagued by constant infighting and orc blood being shed over nothing but rival orcs fighting each other for scraps. He wants to form a kingdom that the other races will respect and fear.
(Stats were rolled in another forum using the 4d6, drop lowest and reroll 1's once - but let me know if you'd like me to reroll them here).
Backstory: Strix was relatively young (for a dwarf) when Queen Roundi declared war on the Duegar but she had been trained to fight. Strix's clan was part of the initial rebellion. During Roundi's war the stronghold where they lived was attacked and the fighting intense. In the midst of the battle, Strix was struck and fell unconscious. It was then that she had a vision of Saxwyn telling her that if she devoted her life to him, he would spare it. When she regained consciousness, the battle was over. She found the nearest center of worship - thankfully in the closest mead hall - and did as Saxwyn had instructed.

Sounds interesting. My interest is piqued. I’ll toss my hat into the mix.

Name: Xian McCarley
Race: Human (variant)
Class: Fighter
Background: Adventurer’s Scion
Backstory: Xian was born in Tindar. However, unlike the other children of the country, only his mother was a native. He grew up knowing very little about his father as he had never met him. All he knew is that he was a foreigner and a famous warrior from another land. Growing up, he found in his uncle a mentor and a role model. He was a samurai, and he was the embodiement of the values required to hold such a title. From his uncle, he learned how to fight with honor and valor. Many years later, his mother passed away from an illness. As her dying wish, she asked her son to go and try find his father, and give him her half of a pendant to which he would hold the other half. After the funeral, Xian set out to Iewiuf to begin his search.

Born to a slave stolen from the Plains People and one in the employ of Warlord Skargor in the Thgol’d’rak “Kingdom”, Zanoth was trained in the ways of the Holy Guard of Zogus. His status was accepted as the Warlord himself was of similar…. ancestry… But his mothers influence went beyond maternal, as she was a shaman of Saxwyn. Her violent death at the hands of his own people showed him their evil ways. Accepting Saxwyn into his heart, he broke his oath to his lord, kingdom and god, for which he will forever be an outcast.
I just used standard array for ability scores. If Kiyomi is chosen I will change these to your homebrew method.
Name: Kiyomi Mai
Race: Dhampir (open to changing race, or modifying this to work around lore)
Class: Warlock (Hexblade)
Background: Noble
Backstory: (sorry it’s so long I may have gotten a bit carried away)
Kiyomi Mai was born the eldest and only daughter of a well-known Tindarese Shogun, the single child of his first wife. She never knew her mother - the first Midai died only a few days after Kiyomi’s birth. Still, her mother’s legacy long outlived her, and it did not take long for the young girl to learn of the rumours that surrounded the Shogun’s first wife. Her mother was described as hypnotizingly beautiful and elegant, the perfect picture of grace and poise, all of which would, at first, appear to be said as praise. However, her mother was not liked. They gossiped that the circumstances around her arrival were far too mysterious, simply appearing upon the steps of the Shoguns mansion in the middle of the night. They said she had him completely under her spell in only one day, a feat seemingly impossible on such a stoic, unmovable man as the shogun. They whispered that, perhaps she was not human at all, but a Kitsune, a wicked fox-spirit bent on seducing the shogun to steal his wealth , or perhaps even his life. (I thought a Kitsune would be appropriate given the Japanese-y setting of Tindar, but again would be happy to change this to better fit lore :) ) At first, Kiyomi did not believe the rumours, dismissing them as jealous gossip. But, as she grew older, and her father married once more she began to notice the difference between herself and the other noble children. Their pupils did not narrow into cat-like slits. Their teeth were not so long, and did not taper into such sharp points. They did not lust to devour the dreams of their peers.. did they? However, she knew she was not a kitsune, even if her mother truly was. True, she shared some traits with the mythical creatures, yet she felt no connection to spirits let alone foxes, and she certainly couldn’t shapeshift into one. She was torn between her mother and father, not human, not Kitsune but some strange in-between. Kiyomi’s father too began to realise she was different from his other children, and the girl began to find herself with less and less freedom as the Shogun forbade her from leaving his lands, then his mansion. Kiyomi knew her father did not do this out of hatred but fear - not only was she the only child of his first love, but also his only daughter, and this made him overly-protective. To the Shoguns credit, he went out of his way to keep her entertained in any way he knew how, hiring any entertainment he thought might please her, and going so far as to personally teach her the ancient Tidarese art of the sword. Upon he begging, he had even allowed her to practice with his own mightily blade -a sentient weapon that had been passed throughout the generations of house Mai for centuries. Still, as weeks turned into years of residing solely within her fathers mansion, Kiyomi could not help but grow bored, longing for a taste of the outside world. As she reached adulthood her desire for freedom became unbearable and so, in the dead of night, Kiyomi snuck out of her quarters, stealing her fathers precious sword and a generous pile of money before setting out on her own.

Oh! See, there's something I forgot. I like to use dice to determine ability scores, but I use a homebrewed method.
Each player rolls 4d6 drop the lowest in three sets of six. Then you can choose the best of the three separate arrays, and then assign the rolls to ability scores as desired. No need for anybody to roll dice now, unless they want to. We can wait and roll dice for characters after the selection process is over.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Ability scores: 10121251410
Ability scores: 12141291316
Ability scores: 6151712713
I'll go ahead and roll em' now so I can adjust Strix accordingly.

Backstory: When the dragon armies marched to war against the elves, drax followed. When they took the elven lands, drax was there. Now, he has been tasked by the dragon army. And so he set out, loyal to his superiors. But as he explored the land, and saw the flames of his kin as they ravaged the earth, he began to feel…. Doubtful. Is this really who I want to serve? He asked himself. Do I want to dedicate myself to… this? And so he began on the road to defection. He tried to fit into society, obscuring his reptilian features with a hooded cloak, and trying to find a job, but his true identity always came out, one way or another. The cloak would slip, his anger would turn to rage. No matter where he went, no one could accept him. So he returned to the one thing he knew. The army. Empty handed, he was dishonored, branded, and thrown out, left to fend for himself in a world where he had no one but himself. (100% editable later on if that doesn’t fit with all of the world lore)

Backstory: Koal from a young age was sent to live in a monastery due to him being recently orphaned. He learnt the art of using his fists and spears, yet leaving much later to pursue a hermitage in the mountain. He became adept at survival, yet forgot how to speak. He was rumoured about, and was well-known among the locals. He eventually leaves the mountain, yet still worships the spirits of the mountains. He travelled, and eventually ended up where he is today.
Goraqull is a druid from the lands of Nasua. He came with the rumored emissary to establish relations with the mainlanders. However, no one took them seriously. Goraqull and Nasuans that he travelled with were unaware of the customs of the mainlanders and did not bring any gifts or even signets they would name them emissaries. They never reached the capital of the Republic to establish communications or relations, as they were attacked several times by roaming bandits and goblins that were led by orcs. Goraqull survived these raids unsure if the rest of his party survived. He was unable to make it to republic lands and settled in a forest to the southwest which he named Fey Forest after others like him who came from Nasua who hide in fear of capture or death.
Just as an FYI to all, I'm going to allow until 8:30am (GMT -6) tomorrow (Dec. 2nd) for any further submissions. I already see two potential parties forming up here, both with wildly different goals. In order for my decision making process to be a bit easier, I'd sure appreciate even the most bare bones of setting appropriate back stories for each character. For me, the backstory helps me imagine how one character might fight with others in a group. Please also link to a completed character sheet so I can see how mechanics and roleplay will mesh. If you need access to source material, go ahead and join this campaign: https://ddb.ac/campaigns/join/35896262166979183.
Thanks to all who submitted already. Looking forward to pulling together a merry band of misfits (or maybe 2 merry bands! depending on the amount and quality of submissions) to go on an adventure.
