I and my group of friends are currently looking for a DM to play with. We're looking for a story rich campaign with RP opportunities and exploration. Our group has a total of 6 players, mostly experience, all of us have played and some have DM. This will however be our first time doing Play by Post. We are all in our late 20's, our time zone is EST/UTC -5, and are LGBTQ+ friendly. We would like a serious setting with opportunities for fun, but nothing too goofy or zany. We would be comfortable with either core adventure or something homebrew.
If interested please be 21 and over, and add a little sample of your DM style.
Below I will link my character, and give some details about them.
Background: Deep beneath the green fathomless depths of The Dawn Sea, seated on a throne of death and bone, crowned by countless drowned stars 'it' resides. Served by a court of its' chosen dreamers, it rules over a nameless city; a city where dark things walk and madness sings. There, lost in their dreams do wayward souls come to grow twisted by their darkened reflections. Herald to the court of drowned stars, servitor to the pale serpent; exalted Calsipher gathers the wretched, downtrodden and the meek. With promises of hope and power he lures them to the dream. Sa that they too may one day see the truth.
Home: Calsipher was birth from the sea itself, a creature born to be the perfect tool for it's maker. He wandered onto the shore of an unsuspecting town of little importance, and fueled by instinct, assumed a personality and began to work. An observant predator he lured those that he could with dreams of power, turned the people of the town against its mayor and offered salvation through his master to the forgotten. The night the Captain took the mayor in, he wondered the snaking road of this new playground. There in the night, underneath the cascading light of a full moon he heard the call of something.. an ornate key. He followed the road up the hill, towards the temple that Fiona now resided over and used the key on its door. This felt fitting to him, after all, this was his masters new temple in this world.
RP Sample: A dirt road snaked through a large town, and ended atop a hill, just before a temple. A lean woman dressed in black stood at the temples' doors, she looked on as two distant figures had an argued by the wayside.
"Like morning's mist he drifted into town, innocuous and subtle," spat the Mayor, disheveled in tattered clothes. "With an inviting smile painted on his lips, he whispered words like warmed honeyed milk," each word uttered with more rage, and a healthy dose of contempt. "Lilac eyes hidden behind a cascade of golden locks beguiled us with their stare, a false trust our faux ami." he bleated.
The Captain of the Royal Guard shifted his weight with impatience, saying nothing.
"He peddled compassion... but little did we know! We allowed a serpent to make its way into our home! Poisoned the well, that viper! Then, they came in the night... those filthy lepers!" he turned red as he flailed his arms with heated vigor. "They dragged the priest out of bed, took him to the lake, and drowned him... and they didn't stop there. They burned the holy icons, and replaced the priest with that witch!" he said, pointing accusingly towards the woman that stood atop the hill. "No one goes near the temple anymore... they can't. It's Blasphemous!" he let out incredulously, almost foaming at the mouth.
After a silent moment, the Captain took his gaze off the woman and brought it back to the Mayor. "I questioned these... 'lepers', they made no mention of a 'golden haired snake'. They did however mentioned your deal with the priest," he gave pause and observed the Mayors rage vanish, replaced with a mixture of guilt, shame, and fear. "you blame this all on snakes and vipers, but it was you who sold the people snake oil." continued the Captain.
The Mayor's face drained of blood, he turned to run. His escape quickly halted by a well primed foot. Behind him stood a guard, one in an immaculate uniform, one the Captain did not recognize. After a moment of hesitation the Captain, moved to grab the Mayor. "Thank you... recruit, but I had it handled." he said to him as he restrained the Mayor in hempen ropes.
"Of that I have no doubts, Sir." each word dripping with genuine heartfelt confidence, and the guard stared at his Captain with unnatural lilac eyes as he said them.
If you're looking for a PbP DM, sure, I'll bite. Do you intend to use the character above for any world that I may run the game in?
Anyways, DM style... it's kind of hard to provide a direct sample of one's DM style, since it's a longer-spanning sort of thing than a single snippet of RP. So, I think I'll do this in two parts: first, I'll explain my general DM philosophy/style, and then provide a few examples of my writing style.
As a DM, I try to focus on uniqueness above all else. I like each and every character to feel unique, and I achieve this in a number of different ways. First, I like to give players various mostly nonmechanical abilities to augment them, make them more useful in certain situations (and sometimes less useful in others), and generally promote their flavor. I also attempt to weave each and every character into the narrative in some way, making sure they all feel included in some way or another. That brings me to the narrative. In person, I'm an entirely improvisation based DM, meaning that I don't really prepare much, if anything going to the table, and instead almost everything is just a reaction to the players and quick thinking on my part. It actually works very well, which is surprising given how terrible I am at improvisation away from the table. In a PbP format, there's significantly less improv involved because I don't have to think on my feet, but at least you don't have to worry about taking things off of the rails, because there are no rails!
In terms of pillars and general vibes, I tend to have a fairly even balance of RP, combat, and exploration, though it really depends on the preference of the players. My writing style tends toward dark comedy, and in my spare time I'm a horror/fantasy writer. My biggest inspirations are Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, China Miéville, Garth Nix, Jonathan Stroud, and the writing team at Failbetter Games, if you're familiar with any of them you can tell how I lean, style-wise. I tend towards the weird and unique, and love worldbuilding, so I would be more than happy to create a world from scratch if that's what the team wants. Anyhoo, I think I've blabbed on long enough, so I'll just link a few examples from my most recently DMed games.
I also wish to play in a campaign that's more than a one-on-one, but all my submissions to other recruitment threads have been turned down. I know that this post wasn't really intended to be "hey, if you want to play but don't have a DM, post here!" but I'd still like to mention that I'm on the lookout for that.
Name: Sin (Chosen name)
Race: Variant Human
Class: Warlock (Fiend)
Backstory: Sin was the scion of a minor noble house that SERIOUSLY control-freaked over her. She didn't like that, and - not being the most sane of people - she executed a daring escapade and went to join a demonic circus, where she became an acrobat and actress (actorbat). Oh, forged an otherwordly pact with a fiend of ancient evil and unimaginable power. But mostly actorbat.
Personality: Sin is an insane thrill seeker who wants nothing more than to be the greatest circus performer ever, and have lots and lots of (slightly sadistic) fun doing so. She's not necessarily evil, just off her rocker and indifferent to other people. When she does form bonds with other people (which happens rarely) she remains extremely loyal to her friends (and tries to convince them to become insane actorbat warlocks too)
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Will everyone stop calling him "The Demogorgon"? It's his name, not a title!
My DM style is somewhat lengthy but I’m RP heavy unless it doesn’t warrant it.
Here’s an intro to one of my games as a sampler.
Mist. Seemingly unending, constantly swirling, has enveloped you. Mist. Blocking your vision with only the sound of footfall telling you that you are still on the ground. You cannot tell the direction in which you walk, left from right, forwards from backwards. For you poor souls that have become enveloped - the occurrences leading up to it seem completely random as your mind races with wonderings and intrusive thoughts of what this Mist is. Mist. A cause of some mage you angered at some point in your life? Mist. A natural but explainable phenomenon? Mist. Something more… sinister? You could not tell… and the sounds within, oh by all of the gods the sounds inside of this Mist were dreadful, terrifying as screams, cries for help, howls, growls, and flesh squelching were all you could hear. Should you go to assist the cries or stop the monsters, you would find nothing but more… Mist.
I'm not a writer so longer post are not the norm for me, but I've been working on trying to add more flavor to my posts.
I'd prefer a non-discord format.
I'm ok with whatever campaign the DM prefers. I haven't decided on a character yet and I'd be into a lengthy campaign and starting level 3-4 would be cool but not critical.

"Ignorance is bliss, and you look absolutely miserable."
I'm interested in joining this campaign or one the DM is currently running too.
The characters below can be adjusted to suite the campaign, or I can make a new character. Contact me if you have room in your other campaign.

I wouldn’t mind running a Ravenloft game for y’all or I could do something like Descent into Avernus if modules are preferred. 😌
