Character Name & Pronouns:Khopaitus Mendelu (ze/zir; However, Khopaitus often refers to Khopaitus in third person) Character Species & Class: Halfling Bard (College of Creation) Backstory: For as long as Khopaitus has been alive, ze has heard the song. Khopaitus sometimes struggles with the idea of gods being dead, because they talk to zir every night. And every day. They never stop talking. But their talking has become a comfort that brings Khopaitus peace and drive. Ze began to hum along and found the world bent and twisted at zir song. Khopaitus thought this must be the gods and so joined a temple, but quickly found ze lacked the focus necessary to study. But the song guided zir, and Khopaitus was able to shape dream right alongside the holy folks. When the call went out for an expedition to the sweetly singing stars, Khopaitus knew applying zirself to zir work would get them the chance to hear that ethereal chorus from the very maw of creation. Something Special: Khopaitus is often unconscious of exactly how the song alters the world around zir. Ze has transformed food, cured illness, and even compelled a wicked and corrupt priest to publically confess, all while humming or whistling to zirself and unaware of the warping around zirself. Khopaitus also has the nagging feeling that if ze actually gets to the stars and hears their song in person, ze might just explode and cease to be. And Khopaitus is weirdly okay with that. Character Role: Gunner - Khopaitus has found that the song ze hears all the time is remarkably well suited to both creation and shaping of dreams as well as catastrophic violence. General Physical Description: Khopaitus tends to enjoy wearing garish colors that clash and unsettle the eye. Ze also tends to be unsubtle in his agonizing eloquence.
Also, because someone asked about the Fey and the Fell:
The feywild and shadowfell do indeed exist, albeit in... different forms. The sun and moon, Cervi and Corvo, respectively, came to a grinding half when the gods disappeared. Or, as we now learned, died. Their people left en masse, traveling the stars, some even before mortality set foot in Heaven. From Corvo, beings touched by dismal negative energy, and from Cervi, those touched by boundless positive energy. Fell and Fey.
Essentially, the natives of the Feywild and Shadowfell are refugees from the satellites of our world, who have left their own homes for whatever reason. Some came to our planet, while others ventured into Heaven.
Other planes of existence were certainly a thing in the past, but when the gods disappeared, so did any interplanar travel. Those beings trapped here stayed here, against their will, most eventually dying out or forging alliances with mortality. While the Fey and Fell have physical locations, no physical location is known for the outer planes.
For the Elemental Planes, anything you're happy to share at this point for those places and peoples, too?
Shit, I forgot about them
The planet now has four new satellites! These orbit much farther out, and are largely untamed places. Their inhabitants did not flee after everything went down, and in general they aren't very wise places to go. On account of the ripping elemental force, and all that. There has been talk of colonizing them, but it's largely just an idea at the moment.
That sounds very fun. I've got some loose ideas about the patron as this eldritch genie composite that's half material storm and half a mixture of normal djinni bodies mashed together as a result of the effects of that wealth of violence on the gods and the natural order of things spilling out into other satellites and their denizens, and what the Patron might blindly be seeking by trying to get a thready Aasimar bloodline into space, and what they might take from her dreams etc. that I'd be happy to work on/retool with you and hopefully is in keeping with the setting and the adventure.
Also, I've been reading the Dark Matter book. How much of this will we be using, ships and combat, feats and spells too? Extra proficiencies?
Shield management is a lot of responsibility, but Cas is up to the task, as long as you give her a shake when there's a battle on the horizon, Captain!
For myself and others: Are we using the Technology proficiency? Also, will we have access to the grafts, the spells (the mega spells especially), and the feats that the book mentions -- are they relevant to H-ships?
I'd slightly refocus Cas (to have Technology rather than Arcana as a proficiency, and for her to have the Technomancy Cantrip, instead of one of the others, maybe a graft that helps her job -- on the king's dime, as this is his pet project maybe? The grafts do seem a big opportunity for slight bodily horror, even more so than the rest of the heavenly corpse filled setting.)
Also, to your mind, if it doesn't give too much away -- a spellcaster Engineer can use spell slots to overcharge her shield. In the vastness of H-space it might be that a Warlock getting short rests can provide a lot of slots if the time of travel between trouble (while also being more quickly powerless, for that oh no we're in trouble horror moment) means they have more slots per encounter than a long rest based class. Though, of course, if the ships are slow and the spaces are vastly vast, the opposite may be true.
edit: reading about the twice a day jump drives, a short rest caster like Cas, where the spell level is always the highest possible, may be a good idea for making more travel per day where we’re fleeing something or other.
(Also I’ve noted the arcane cannon, if the ship gunner is using one in the H-ship Cas could use her Eldritch blast if she were gunner and take the gunner role as a second choice if preferred, if someone else is desired for engineer, but her stats and story, possibly don’t lean that way so well compared to a dex based character, I appreciate. Would be happy to, however, if good for team composition and character dynamics.)
Lastly, as a slight update, watching everyone with years of experience throw their cap in:

Lastly, Cassidy has extremely bushy hair, as per the photo- if you want to imagine her as not terribly dissimilar in appearance to Ellen Ripley from Alien, and maybe that helps slot her into your mental image of your ship-based adventure - I won't complain!

Character Name & Pronouns: Urgojion he/him
Character Species & Class: Deep Gnome Fighter 1 / Rogue 1 / Wizard 1 (super utility!)
Backstory: Being a true motor head, Urgojion joined an expedition trying out new machinery for digging tunnels and mining as a errand boy to the Zarint the Inventor. Zarint, a wizard who design and fabricated most of machinery needed grew fond of Urgojion, offering to teach him some magic to help maintain the overly complex equipment. Initially Urgojion was hired for his talents to stealthily assit the wizard in the daily testing and adjusting the equipment, never being noticed buy always being at hand when needed.
But as luck would have it, as Urgojion was testing the coil impedance to confirm he had fixed the short in it, a section of the tunnel collapsed. Being in the generator housing was enough to protect Urgojion but the cave in destroyed most of machinery and crushed most of the expedition, and trapping the rest.
Using the skills Zarint had taught him about the machinery and magic, Urgojion started repairing, re designing and rebuilding the digger to try and clear the caved in tunnels. Using every last resource he could use, he started back they way they had come.
Ultimately he was able to find the trapped portion or the company, finding Zarint didn't make it, and make it back to main tunnels that still stand. Where they found the group of Duergar waiting for them after the cave in got their attention. What felt like a week long stand off against the duergar, Urgojion was able to sneak past the fight and eliminate the duergar commander which was enough to stem the tide.
After exiting the mines, Urgojion was deemed a hero for saving the team multiple times. He never felt like a hero, and always like solving the problem was much more rewarding then receiving praise for his efforts.
Something Special: He is always thinking about multiple projects and mutters to himself, sometimes including others in the conversation as if they had heard his thoughts the whole time.
Character Role: Engineer
General Physical Description: typical dark complexion of a deep gnome, with a nose that looks kinda like a goblins. Wears a trench coat over his armor with his trade tools all hanging on the inner liner. Wears googles most of the time.

Tana, having seen death out in the wilds before, sends a silent prayer to the surrounding nature. She trusts that the forces of the wild will allow Teryl's body to be one with the undergrowth and at peace.
As she follows the rest of the party through the line of trees, blinking curiously at the supposed home of the Lady. The house is quite basic in nature, even more so than Tana's own home had been when she had lived in the forest. Nonetheless, there's an odd sense of familiarity looking upon the house carved from nature.
She watches as Erkiss briefly steps out, taking note of the party before ducking back in. "What is the plan now? It doesn't seem like we're quite prepared to go charging inside." She murmurs to the rest of the group, edging forward slightly to try and get a better look of the place.

Character Name & Pronouns:Azesia "Azzy" (linked) | She/Her Character Species & Class: Winged (Variant) Tiefling | Swarmkeeper Ranger Backstory:
For as long as Azesia can remember, the streets have been her home. Even before the death of the gods and the founding of New Cascadia, Azesia never found faith in those celestial beings that others praised and looked up to. After all, if such beings were really looking out for this world, why would children like Azesia have been left on the streets, alone and hungry. Her infernal blood couldn't have been the reason, right? Either way, there was a tingle of satisfaction at the idea that these gods had been slain. Perhaps they had felt the same suffering as all the urchins of Cascadia that had met brutal ends on the streets.
Having lost most of her sight from a dirty trick played on her in her youth, Azesia struggled greatly in the early days of New Cascadia. Her poor navigation led to several risky encounters with the more fortunate and Azesia eventually resigned herself to living in the sewer-like systems of the rising empire. It was there where the winged Tiefling made her first friends, the skittering creatures that resided in the shadows of Heaven. Odd little things they were, like rats, yet, notably altered in their appearance. Azesia garnered a particular kinship with the tiny beasts, finding comfort in the small claws and webbed wings of the rodent-like creatures. Her relationship with the swarm became symbiotic in nature as she continued to live amongst them in close quarters. It's unclear how exactly their bond transcended into a mental connection, but the swarm has since assisted her in the streets of everyday life. Though still poor during her return to society, Azesia's newfound friends played a great role in her increased thievery, winding through streets with ease after a successful steal.
Azesia's odd winged appearance and her shocking ability to navigate the world despite her lack of sight ultimately caught the attention of His Recrudescent Majesty. Though originally unwilling to partake in whatever ridiculous and frankly suicidal-sounding mission to the beyonds, the riches promised for a successful journey were a swaying factor of Azzy's interest. The idea of floating off in the unadventured nothingness wasn't all that appealing to Azesia, but she trusts that her swarm will guide her, and whomever else will be aboard the sky-boat, to the distant stars.
Something Special: Azzy typically has her eyes covered with a strip of cloth, a result of a childhood injury that left her with extremely sensitive eyes and generally poor vision. It can however be noted that her perception is oddly sharp, being able to navigate winding streets and unfamiliar terrain without her sight. This ability is directly linked to her bonded swarm, each of the tiny creatures acting as Azesia's eyes and ears in this scary world. Their communication seems to be entirely telepathic as words are not usually exchanged between Azzy and the swarm in public settings. Character Role: Pilot or potentially Gunner General Physical Description: Azesia has an ashen grey complexion, her hands and feet are permanently stained a dark brown dirt-like color. Ashy webbed wings extend from her shoulderblades and a set of horns that curl back from the top of her head. Several other common tiefling traits such as pointed ears and teeth, a thin barbed tail, and runic patterning around the eyes can also be noted. Azzy wears generally tattered clothing in dark shades to help her blend into shadowed alleyways, a couple gold accessories such as a stolen amulet peak out from beneath the dirty fabrics. The cloth around her head covering her eyes appears to be a simple cloth bandage that can be found in most medical kits, Azesia's is slightly dirt stained and yellowed. I will likely create my own art of her appearance if chosen.

We can work on it at some point, if you are selected. I'll have to do some minor retooling on a lot of backstories, probably, though I'm pleased that most people are very much in-line with the lore and general vibe, that's a lot of the time not the case for the more "out there" campaigns I've pitched.
Also, I've been reading the Dark Matter book. How much of this will we be using, ships and combat, feats and spells too? Extra proficiencies?

We'll be using the ship combat, though not a ton. We will not, however, be using jumps. All travel must be done physically. As for other content, mostly no, but if you have something specific you'd like to draw from it the answer will likely be yes. It's not all immediately accepted, though. Grafts are interesting, but are not immediately something that exists. In general, the Dark Matter setting is one in which "sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology." This is not the case for the Heathen's Heavens, things are still in a more industrial, 19th century area.

Thank you for the detailed answer. I’m a big fan of gas lamp, Victorian aesthetic and that sort of fantasy styling, so it doesn’t upset me to hear it might be more Jules Verne than stellaris, in feel.
For the engineer role specifically, where some aspects of ship combat depend on DC15 or even DC20 INT(Technology) checks, and these are influenced by tools that wouldn’t fit that aesthetic (Datapads etc.) would that be removed whole cloth or kept. For myself and others and the character pitches, it might affect things. Currently Cas is equal Charisma and intelligence for the purposes of her backstory but also fitting the engineer role, and I imagine some others may have chosen and designed to fit the role similarly.
Sorry if this is too many questions too early. The setting invites a lot of questions and the mind haring off trying to figure out the character that fits the setting and fits the role, in the right way.
edit: just to say, if not chosen, I’d still be very keen to read the setting and story that develops, if that’s open to spectators.
Specific rules will be handled when they come up during the campaign, but I will say that the relevant stat for the engineer can be handled in multiple ways, depending on how one wishes to keep the ship running.
Also, another reminder:
This thread is still open for recruitment, and will remain so for at least another day, perhaps two. Get your characters in soon, before it's too late!

Character Name & Pronouns: Elliot Popsicle (he/him) Character Species & Class: Harengon Artificer (Battle Smith)
Backstory: Elliot Popsicle grew up on the edge of a swamp. With the death of the gods, the swamp has grown and changed. It expands by the day, swallowing villages, cattle, kin. Elliot and his folks have spent the last 20 years learning the new swamp, how to live in it and around it, and, most importantly, how to hunt in it. They've been pulling things out of that mire that have drawn crowds to see. With the crowds, the word spread of the scarred, skinny rabbitman and all the contraptions he invented to hunt, drawing the attention of the relevant authorities. He's not exactly a hero, but he can catch and kill something if you need him to. Nowadays, that might be enough.
Something Special: Elliot lives for the hunt. He is an amateur taxidermist, often working bits of things he has killed into the contraptions and automata he creates. He's interested in the trip because, if there is something out there that can kill a god, killing it would make quite the tale. Someone might buy him a drink or something.
Character Role: Gunner. Just gunner (he can be a back-up engineer if necessary, but he's not interested in anything but hunting).
General Physical Description:
Brown-furred and dark-eyed, Elliot is laconic, taciturn, and thoughtful. He has a scar running through his left eye, from where something caught him before he killed it. His demeanor is humble and business-like, until he gets drunk or gets to know you. He is proud of being a hard worker and despises those who don't pull their weight. His duty is to kill things and he thinks he's pretty good at it.

Character Role: Pilot or potentially Gunner
General Physical Description: Azesia has an ashen grey complexion, her hands and feet are permanently stained a dark brown dirt-like color.

Character Name & Pronouns: Elliot Popsicle (he/him)
Character Species & Class: Harengon Artificer (Battle Smith)
