"Keep your friends close and your enemies far, far behind you." - Dido Wrand, the Astral Witch Time Zone: CST (GMT-6) RPG Experience: I have played for several years and DM’d a few too, all in D&D 5e. I have only been playing play-by-posts for about a year now. Fun Fact About Me: When I was sixteen, I flew a plane into the arctic circle and delivered a refrigerator to an innuit family. There were so many bald eagles that they looked like a flock of seagulls. I watched one steal a fish out of a fisherman’s bucket and - I swear - laugh as it flew away. Character Name & Pronouns: Dido Wrand (she/her) Character Species & Class: Human (Basic, I know, but I rolled all odd numbers). Monk, Way of the Astral Self (Pirate Background) Backstory:
There are the highborn and the low. In the churn of anguished believers, idealistic revolutionaries, and grim loyalists, it was the low who paid in blood. The gods are dead and we will never be able to wash clean the stain within the Sigil Cloud. What else could hold their place in the hearts of mortalkind? Some chose imperial fervor. Some chose the allure of dreams. Dido Wrand chose the freedom of Heaven itself. When she was eleven, she managed to fight her way onto The Obsidian Wrath, a pirate ship that often harried shipping vessels between the colonies. She absorbed the skills of a sailor while compounding her skills as a brawler. When she showed a keen interest in piloting, the ever-tranquil pilot of the Wrath took her under their wing. The old pilot taught her the art of coaxing, guiding, and sensing every line of the predatory ship. They taught her the value of meditation and how to envision her strength beyond herself, until she managed to manifest her astral self. When the old pilot died, Dido stepped into the role and flew the Wrath for several years with tremendous success. She made a name for herself among pirates and imperials, as the best pilot in Heaven, earning her the nickname “The Astral Witch”. But the pirating life is one of many dangers, and one day Dido was betrayed by her envious captain who coveted her fame. And so the Astral Witch was imprisoned by the New Cascadian Empire. Her trial has been a long and public affair, but now a gleam of redemption lies on the horizon: the mad expedition beyond the Sigil Cloud. Dido Wrand is as eager as she is frightened by the idea of exploring that particular unknown. The god butchers are out there, but… it would be fun to outgrow the fame of the Wrath. Something Special: Dido Wrand has invented several maneuvers that have ended up in Imperial Naval Academy textbooks. She once crashed an imperial graduation ceremony, held the students hostage for a half hour, and lectured them on the finer points of dunamantic skimming. She signed several textbooks (and the underside of a handsome officer’s cap), kept one book for herself, and sailed away, dancing around the frantic security ships that came to arrest her. Character Role: Pilot. It is unlikely the Empire would ever trust her to command a venture of this nature. General Physical Description: I picture Dido wearing something a little more flashy, perhaps a bright red coat, but this image captures her attitude:
I would be happy playing the Captain or Gunner roles if you have someone already in mind for the Pilot, but I would need to quick swap around where I've put my ability scores. Dido Wrand may be a steely-eyed pilot, but she no word good at present.
Characters have been chosen, PMs sent, and this thread is now closed! Thank you to everyone who put creativity and effort into their characters, it was very hard chosing the final four. I'm not even lying, it took me about an hour. I may reopen this thread at some point, in case a player drops out, but for now it's closed!

Your RPG Experience: I'm pretty new to DnD, but I can write well and I feel that my roleplaying is at least ok.
A Fun Fact About You: I have proficiency and expertise with a piano. As well as a +2 modifier to whatever ability score that is.
Character Name & Pronouns: Peregrin Leafwilds, he/him
Character Species & Class: Half-Elf Swashbuckler
Backstory: Peregrin has lived a tough life, even before the gods fell. His parents died when he was young, and when he grew up he still was poor. In this time he learned the importance of grit, resilience, and perseverance. He relied on thievery to survive, but did his best to steal from only those who could afford it. When the gods fell, he too was shaken but realized that there was an opportunity. While everyone mourned the fall of the gods, Peregrin stole into the homes and vaults of the wealthy, not because he didn't respect the gods but because he had no time to pay his respects. Throughout the 11 years after the gods' fall, Peregrin's life began to look brighter and brighter. His skill at thievery got better and better, and he began to feel more confident about his life. Now, he exudes confidence like never before, knowing that the worst is behind him.
Something Special: Despite elves and humans usually discriminating against half elves, for some reason Peregrin seems to be an exception. Perhaps it's because of his friendly demeanor, or his masterful way of words and charisma, but humans and even elves will allow Peregrin to feel like he belongs.
Character Role: Captain
General Physical Description: Peregrin is tall. He has short brown hair, and a pale white skin color. He is young, only 28 years old and he has bright, confident eyes and a constant smile.
Magic Item: He'll have a magic rapier of wounding, with a wonderfully gilded hilt. Of course, this was stolen.
This seems really cool, and I'd like to put in my character information, but first I think it'd be good to know what other characters have been selected for the roles. I don't want to double up on classes or anything. In the meantime...
Time Zone: PST (GMT-8)
RPG Experience: Fairly experienced, unfortunately out of practice. I started my D&D career something like 5 years ago, but I haven't been able to play in half a year because of scheduling conflicts. I admittedly haven't played any systems besides 5e. This would be my first Play by Post, but I've been hanging out elsewhere on these forums for quite a while.
Fun Fact:Technically, I started college at age 11. Technically.
I've got a general idea for a character, but they wouldn't really be a captain. I'll revise it or make a new character when I learn who they'll be working alongside.

Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.

I'm definitely interested, and I'd like to reserve a spot here. I've submitted the same character I submitted here for a different campaign, and if she doesn't get in I'll resubmit her. If she does, I'll make a different one (and yes, that same character I submitted a month ago has not yet been accepted into ANY campaign, and I really want to play with her)

Interestingly, I know an 11 year old who's taking college classes (at a college). You could say that he technically started college at age 11.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Welp. Inspiration struck, as it so rarely does, so here's a character. If there's already a Paladin in the party, then I have a backup idea; a Warforged Divine Soul literally made out of dreams.
Character Name & Pronouns: Adran Wymar (he/him)
Character Species & Class: Half Elf Paladin (Oath of the Watchers)
Backstory: Only 3 years before the gods died, Adran was a cult leader, using his charismatic nature to convince others to join his grim congregation. When the cult grew big enough, a bloodletting sacrifice took place to summon the fanatics' patron into their world. As a portal opened and something started to crawl through, he realized that he was messing with forces far greater than him. In that moment of extreme clarity, he vowed to undo what he had started, and he meant it more than anything he had ever done in his life before then. Tentacles grasping everywhere, pulling his cultists into the indescribable hell that was leaking into the room, he grabbed the innocent being sacrificed and ran. Despite Adran's efforts, the sacrifice succumbed to blood loss, but did so far enough away from the otherworldly threat; without enough innocent blood, the portal closed. Ever since, he has hunted down extraplanar entities and cults, to make sure nobody could repeat his mistakes.
He knows that something had to have killed the gods, perhaps even the same something that he once tried to summon. He knows, one day, it could- nay, will- come back for seconds. He is determined to kill it, whatever it may be, before it has the chance. It is his duty, and all the forces in Heaven and Hell couldn't stop him (or so he tells himself).
Something Special: During his last ritual, Adran gazed into horrors yet unknown to him. And they gazed back. Fiends and aberrations always know who he his, and what he tried to do. They immediately notice him when he is within 30 feet, and they don't tend to take kindly to him. Luckily for him, the feeling is mutual.
Character Role: Captain
General Physical Description: Adran is relatively tall and gaunt, with blond hair. His eyes were once a bright green, but they have since turned crimson red, tainted by horrors seen and blood spilt.
Magic Item: Depends on how I roll for stats. Either a Belt of Hill Giant Strength, a +2 Shield, or a Cape of the Mountebank.
STATS: (wish me luck) 10, 13, 16, 14, 13, and 12

You know, I think I'll just make a different character, even though I don't know yet.
Time Zone: Mountain Standard
RPG Experience: Lots and lots. I just can't get enough of D&D.
Fun fact: The reason I play so many archer characters (this being one of them) is that I'm a fairly-good recurve bowman myself.
Character Name: Christopher Kelvin (he/him)
Species and class: Shifter Ranger (Horizon Walker)*
Backstory: Chris grew up on the streets, fending for food, until he one day met an old man. This wise firbolg was an accomplished ranger from a long-forgotten time. Teaching Chris the secrets of the bow, the sword, and teleportation magic, the two became a team. And yet Chris had always found himself to be more comfortable and a more confident speaker than his gruff, aloof mentor. When the wise old ranger eventually passed on, instead of remaining alone, Chris went to find a group to be part of. He enlisted in the rapidly dwindling army, where his natural charm and martial prowess quickly elevated his rank. However, he became depressed at the state of Cascadia and his own inability to bring about a change for the greater good, as well as the restrictions on his freedom impressed on him by the army.. When he saw the advertisements (Note: this can be changed to fit however the character comes aboard) he eagerly enlisted, seeing it as the perfect opportunity to use his skills as a fighter and a commander for a good cause.
Something unusual: Instead of connecting to and becoming one with the forces of life like most rangers, Chris uses sheer force of will to bend his magic into obedience (Charisma instead of Wisdom for spellcasting modifier).
General Physical Description: Chris looks like a tall, broad-shouldered human man except for a thin coat of light-colored fur. He wears a beat-up military uniform under an old jacket covered in patches.
*This makes me a Space Ranger.

"Ignorance is bliss, and you look absolutely miserable."
RPG Experience: Lots and lots. I just can't get enough of D&D.
Fun Fact: I got my start with D&D in my high school's D&D Club. It turns out that if you manage to DM an intriguing, evocative campaign for a bunch of hyper middle-school children in a crowded room in 40-minute-session, you can DM an intriguing, evocative campaign anywhere.
Name: Rayla Harkonnen (She/her)
Species and class: Dwarf Warlock (Great Old One)
Backstory: While the public worshiped their gods, Rayla had wondered if there was more. She was intrigued by the thought that there may be beings older than the gods themselves. Delving deep into untold eldritch secrets, she discovered the truth: there were, in fact, cosmic titans that transcended the universe itself. She performed magic that would allow her to siphon a tiny sliver of their incomprehensible power for herself. When the posters went up, she applied - not for the sake of the puny gods or the pitiful mortals, but so that she could finally travel the cosmos as her incomprehensible patrons. (Of course, she doesn't tell her crew this)
Something Unusual: Rayla is one of the few surviving members of a dwarf subspecies that, like the more proliferous duergar, can temporarily make themselves bigger.
General Physical Description: Rayla is a muscular dwarf with dark skin, red hair, and white tattoos in the shape of ancient arcane symbols.

I just realized that you asked for divine casters to be reflavored. I've never really liked Paladins drawing power from gods anyways, since to me it's a much more interesting character and story when a Paladin draws power simply from the conviction stored within their oath. If that's not an option for Adran for whatever reason, perhaps some gods were taking interest in the ritual he was performing, and took his regret as a chance to stop what was happening, giving him power that lasted longer than they did.

I'm afraid that the power of the gods would not last in such away. Any and all clerical abilities were lost when the gods died.

In that case, he can just get power from making a promise he really intends to keep. Makes more sense with Charisma being the spellcasting ability anyways.

"Though godless, we are not hopeless; though fearful, we will be brave." - Dydo Wrand the Devout
Time Zone: CST (GMT-6)
RPG Experience: I have played for several years and DM’d a few too, all in 5e. I ran an eldritch horror Halloween homebrew two-shot that was a lot of fun. I have been playing play-by-posts for about a year now.
Fun Fact About Me: I was once the proud owner of a one-legged chicken affectionately named "Sir Limpsalot"
Character Name & Pronouns: Dydo Wrand (she/her)
Character Species & Class: Drow Paladin (Oath of Devotion)
Backstory: Dydo Wrand was an acolyte of the gods and believed heavily in the interpretation of dreams. When the gods died, she believed their spirits lingered in the dreams of mortals. She has spent the last several years pioneering the rehabilitation of the broken church into the New Cascadian Church of Dreams. Her efforts earned her a knighthood and the notice of the Prince Consort.
Her dreams of late have led her to believe the answers to dreams lie beyond the Sigil Cloud. With the blessing of the Slumbering Elders and the favor of the Prince Consort, she hopes to join the Emperor's Expedition.
Dydo believes the gods will return. There are legends of gods dying and resurrecting in many faiths. While many despaired at the death of the gods, Dydo grows excited for what wonders may come.
Something Special: Dydo keeps a dream journal and fully believes she wanders through the dreams of the gods when she enters her trance. She also carries a morningstar engraved with verses from the Last Lullaby, a beautiful durge for the murdered gods.
Character Role: Captain
General Physical Description: Pale violet skin, broad shoulders, and a reassuring disposition. Wears plate armor adorned with verses from the Pilgrim's Hymnal and sigils of authority within the church and the New Cascadian Empire.

We have no paladin character, but you are certainly welcome to submit two character concepts.
"Ignorance is bliss, and you look absolutely miserable."
Time Zone: Mountain Standard
RPG Experience: Lots and lots. I just can't get enough of D&D.

Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
Don't be mean. Rudeness is a vicious cycle, and it has to stop somewhere. Exceptions for things that are funny.

I'm afraid that the power of the gods would not last in such away. Any and all clerical abilities were lost when the gods died.
"Ignorance is bliss, and you look absolutely miserable."
In that case, he can just get power from making a promise he really intends to keep. Makes more sense with Charisma being the spellcasting ability anyways.

I think I'll leave this open til the end of the day and then make my decision, make sure to get your characters in before then!
