The prisoner recognizes the dagger. There is glimmer in her eyes of recognition, though she is not sure if your truly a friend. She does open the portable hole as instructed by Val. Yes your would need to get into the cell to rescue the prisoner.
"What? No she didn't sir, look out!"Finley points back at the 'monster' and starts casting Thorn Whip at it so he lashes in the direction of the 'creature', "Ah'll save ye!"

The guard is looking the snake. Do what you need to do.
(OOC: I don't remember how you described this guard. Is he heavily armored, like the bullywug that Gan-Re fought in the Proving Grounds? That is, I'm trying to figure out whether all of the bullywugs are that tough of an opponent or whether Gan-Re was fighting some sort of bullywug "champion." Can the Trio discern a difference between the bullywugs at the Proving Grounds vs. this guard? Like being able to tell the difference between a hardened soldier (or captain of the guard) vs. a common city guard?)
The guard is less martial than the warriors at the proving ground. All the warriors at the proving ground are formidable and have experience in combat. They keep downfall safe.

(OOC: Thanks!
With both Finley and Valrieth at the guard's cell, Gan-Re is the only one near the prisoner. Gan-Re hasn't taken an action since the guard overheard Val, so I'm going to wait at least 8 hours just to see whether KW posts before I post Val's next action.)
Valrieth dismisses the opaque green color of the water. Then she casts shape water to freeze the snake shapes, saying "I call on Akadi, Lady of the Winds, to freeze these waters with the cold of the North Wind."
Trying to put all of the urgency she feels for the prisoner's escape into her voice, Val tells the guard, "Hit them now while they're frozen. If you can shatter them, you may be able to destroy these monsters for good."
Gan-Re motions for them to get into the hole, if they do he picks up the hole and puts it away and then Gan-Re would then attempt to fly / dash directly out of the village. He would be shouting at the top of his voice "Guard! Guard! The prisoner is escaping. I think that this thing with the snakes was an escape attempt all along. Quickly follow me and after them. If they get away the king will be displeased."
The guard pauses in thought until he hears Gan-re yelling The he whirls around and chases after Gan-re to follow him. So do the warriors at the Proving grounds
The guard pauses in thought until he hears Gan-re yelling The he whirls around and chases after Gan-re to follow him. So do the warriors at the Proving grounds
Valrieth was aware of movement behind her, but she was too busy trying to keep the guard's attention away from the prisoner's cell to look. As Gan-Re starts calling for the guard, Val backs out of the doorway to the cell and keeps a wary eye on the guard until he rushes past her and Finley.
Valrieth telepathically instructs the owl (wild companion) to follow Gan-Re, with instructions to land near Gan-Re, wait for a few minutes to see whether he gives her anything for Val, and then return to find Val either in this area or to the area around D14 that it surveyed earlier.
As Gan-Re flies away from the Holding Cells with the prisoner in the portable hole, an owl takes off from the branches overhanging the Proving Grounds with a loud call, spreads its wings, and then flies silently away in the direction that Gan-Re went. Val rushes to the door of the hut to see which way the owl flies before it vanishes into the fog.
(OOC: With a 60' flying speed, an owl should be able to catch up to Gan-Re in less than 1 minute as long as Gan-Re didn't change directions right after entering the fog. By my estimate, fewer than 30 minutes have passed since Val summoned the wild companion. Since Gan-Re only has a few minutes to find solid ground and release the prisoner from the portable hole, there should be time for the owl to return to within 100' of Val before the wild companion's 1 hour duration expires.)
The guard and the warriors try to keep by jumping into the waters and swimming, but they are no match for Gan-re's speed.
Gan-re you are soon out of town. Now what do you do and what do the rest of the Trio do in the meantime?
(OOC: @KW - Which direction did Gan-Re fly when he left the hut at D8?)
After she watches the owl fly into the fog, Val ducks into the hut and peers carefully around the corner of the door as she hears the warriors running off from the Proving Grounds. Once it's clear that no one is coming to the Holding Cells, Finley hears Val release a long sigh as though she had been holding her breath. She glances at Finley and laughs nervously, saying, "Well, Gan-Re is off. I sent my owl to try to follow him. It'll be easy to get separated in this fog."
Val stands still and listens with her ears stiff for a moment before she continues worriedly: "Maaaybe we should not be here when the guards return? I know that it looks more guilty if we leave, but I think that the guard was beginning to suspect us. We could try to get a boat across the channel south of the palace. Hopefully, Gan-Re will remember that I talked about going there after we freed the prisoner. If we do have to explain ourselves to the bullywugs, I'll feel better if we can do that when we're all together."
As she talks, Val looks around the hut thoroughly for the first time. If it's dim in the hut, she casts Produce Flame to provide more light. She takes just a few rounds to look around the hut quickly to see what else was there other than the two cells. (In particular, is there a bundle of the prisoner's possessions?) Finally, Val dismisses the remaining effects of her shape water spell, and then she's ready to go if Finley wants to leave.
"Let's not linger here, unless there's a chest with th' prisoners belongin's ah dunnae think there'd be much ta this place."Finley is definitely ready to go and he chuckles nervously, "ah was ready to clobber that boy. This place is makin' me too anxious."He starts heading in the direction of the boat Val mentioned after she's done searching.
