The merchant closes his book. "We have an assortment of items. Is there anything specific you are looking for?" says the young man behind the counter
(For the full list, see the end of this post.)
"Well, my friends and I are going on a journey to the Witchlight Carnival, three days east of here, and hopefully going from there into the Feywild! Do you know whether there are roads and inns along the way to the Witchlight Carnival, or would that mean camping in the wild?"
If the man says that they'll be traveling through the wilderness, she'd like to get a 2-person tent. "It sleeps two. I'll make you a deal Eudith. I'll buy the tent and share it with you if you'll carry it for me!"
She starts to list off things that she'd like to purchase.
"I have a sword, but I'd also like a dagger. I guess I should get a whetstone, too. But more importantly, I'd like to continue my research. I'll need a proper place to keep my notes." Val removes a few sheets of ink-covered pages from her backpack. "Maybe a scrollcase? And a few candles. I'll also need some more blank paper and a few pens. How much is ink? I think that I'm almost out. Oh! That much?" She definitely cannot afford the ink.
"I should move my pens and other delicate things to a pouch so that it's not just jumbling around in my backpack."
She turns to Eudith. "What if we find fairy treasure?! Everyone should probably have a sack, don't you think, Eudith?" She turns back to the man. "5 large sacks."
"We'd better get a bar of soap because -- you know. Days hiking through the wilderness." She wrinkles her whole face and sticks out her small tongue at a crazy angle."A mirror might be nice, too. Oh! I don't think that I can afford that. Never mind."
"We should probably get a couple of flasks of oil. My father always said that oil is always good to have in a pinch.'"
"Oh!" Spotting some of the inexpensive things on the shelves. "5 pieces of chalk. 5 of those little signal whistles. That big ball of string. Should we get a crowbar? No, you're right. We probably won't need it in the wilderness or at the carnival."
"What are those spikey things?", pointing to caltrops.
"Could I ask...would take a brand new, unopened tinderbox as part of payment? It came with my pack, but as you see, I don't really need it." She whispers a few words and makes a odd sequence of gestures with one hand, finally ending with her fist turned palm up. As the harengon opens her hand, you see a small flame covering her palm and flickering a few inches high. She smiles at the flame, and then she looks up at Eudith proudly. She closes her hand, and the flame vanishes.
(OOC: Shopping list
dagger
whetstone
tent (if we're traveling in the wilderness)
scrollcase
5 pcs paper
3 pens
5 candles
pouch
soap
5 sacks
5 pcs chalk
5 whistles
Ball of string
2 flasks of oil
1 set of caltrops
Should be 8 gp + 2 sp, following the standard pricing in the PHB. I don't know if they'll accept barter for the tinderbox.)
Eudith is floored that the shy harengon can suddenly become so outgoing during shopping. "I didn't know you could make fire like that, that's useful. Sure I can carry the tent," she confirms, as she tries to think if she should buy anything herself or save some in case they need to pay admittance to the carnival.
That's a lot, Eudith thinks. Does Val have enough? Do we even have room in our packs to carry all that if she does?
She remembers that she has something heavy taking up room in her pack, that she doesn't really need. She takes out a suit of chain mail that her church insisted she take, despite her divine bulwark being no less protective and much less weighty. "Would you be willing to buy this?", she asks the shopkeeper.
The merchant says "Yes we have all of that. It will cost 17 gp. No I don't need a tinder box"
"Without the ink? Oh! Well, I definitely don't have that much gold left." She glances over at Eudith and seems to shrink a bit. She continues a little more quietly to the shop keeper. "Um. Maybe -- could you let me know how much each item costs? And then I can figure out what I can afford."
“You… you’ve never had a night on the town with a friend?” She frowns. “Hmm… we have maybe an hour or two… and I might be able to treat you to the best night of your life in that time… you wanna go somewhere?”

(OOC: I guess you'll learn over time which situations trigger her anxiety and shyness. This clearly wasn't one of them, at least not the first part before Val ordered more than she could afford.)
"Thank you so much, Eudith. You're very chivalrous!"

Valrieth looks surprised. "Oh! You were carrying that in your pack? It looks like it weighs more than me. You must be quite strong!"
Pom leaves the group to go back her bags and close her store. She hangs a "closed for a while" sign on the door and locks the door. She returns after about 30-40 minutes
Val looks thoughtful for a moment and says, "Well, I'm all done shopping. Most importantly, I have paper and a good pen!"
"Mr. Roslof said that the Witchlight Carnival is in the Misty Forest, a 3-day journey east. But...due east? I mean, is it going to be easy to find? Is it right there along a road or path? Hisashi and I travelled down from Daggerford today, but the Trade Way is a big road. You cannot miss Liam's Hold when you're traveling that way. But I don't know about the route east of here. If the carnival is not right on some major road or trail, we could spend days wandering around the Misty Forest, looking for the it. We should probably ask...someone...in town...to make sure that we know the way. Shouldn't we?"
She gives Eudith a smile with a determined look on her face, "I believe that our quest must be fated since we all have some connection to this archfey, Zybilna! But just because it's fated doesn't mean we don't have to work for it: 'The gods season Fate with the effort of mortals.'"
"I also wonder about this Mr. Roslof. He seemed to offer quite a lot to a group of strangers. Maybe my parents just told me too many stories of the Feywild when I was growing up, but as soon as he mentioned the Feywild, my ears were ready for trickery and subtle lies. I just wonder whether we can trust him and everything he said."
She turns to Eudith, "What do you think we should do?"
"I wonder if it's too late to go back and ask Mister Roslof for better directions," Eudith thinks aloud. "Whether he has a hidden motive or not, I'm certain he at least needs us to get where he is wanting to send us. We need to head back to the guildhall to meet back up with the others, anyway, so it wouldn't be far out of our way." Assuming Val is agreeable, the two of them will head back that way.

“Ohhhh, a cultural thing! That’s so special! Okay, it’s a date!” She giggles and pats the Kobold on the head. “What’s your name again?”

“You know! When two people get together?”
"If you can't afford them than pick the ones you feel like you need" says the Merchant.
I assume you have torches so I don't think you need candles
Here is a blank journal and 1 inkpen and ink
2 oil flask
tent
caltrops
"There that would be 8 gp"
Hisashi looks even more confused, getting a bashful look on her face lending a quiet. “Nope..” in response. “Should i?
“You… you’ve never had a night on the town with a friend?” She frowns. “Hmm… we have maybe an hour or two… and I might be able to treat you to the best night of your life in that time… you wanna go somewhere?”
“Uh sure!” Hisashi nods emphatically
“Come on then. We’ve got a bit!” Absinthe extends a hand to the Kobold. “We’re gonna have fun!”
"Oh, thank you! Yes, even a half-vial of ink would be fantastic! I could definitely skip the candles, and the dagger isn't essential."
"How much are the signal whistles? If I could get 5 whistles for just a few silvers, I'd also like to get those."
So that would be:
blank journal
1 ink pen
ink
2 oil flask
tent
caltrops
5 signal whistles
8 gp & 3 sp?

Gunther Korroden - Nightmares in the Mist
"That is correct with the whistles" says the merchant. He then gathers all the items and takes Valrieth's coin.
He then looks to Eudith with the chainmail "Yes I am willing to buy it for 37 gp"
"Your terms are acceptable," Eudith tells the merchant, handing it over and packing away the coins. "Anything else you need to do Val?"
Val looks thoughtful for a moment and says, "Well, I'm all done shopping. Most importantly, I have paper and a good pen!"
