Elsara then looks to the captain. "Actually, captain, I thought's occurred. Is there a scriptorum in town? I'm thinking maybe purchasing and scribing a spell of Water Breathing might be best if we're out on seafaring adventures!"
Elsara somewhat regrets leaving a good portion of her money at home, but doesn't deem 1,100 gp worth buying the scroll. Perhaps she can reason with the captain that transferring a scroll across will allow for her to cast it multiple times in exchange for the one-shot ability of a scroll they already have...
The Captain scratches his head and says, "We have potions of water breathing in the ship." The captain doesn't have the scroll and he doesn't exactly want to buy you a scroll.
As happy as she may be that Elsara’s knowledge of magic and superior sword skills are back in the party, Gendan will not reciprocate a hug.
When the captain mentions a start time, Gendan says, “We will be here.” (Are there a Guild-affiliated or Guild-recommended accommodations available for the night?)
Gendan will use her “Ear to the Ground” background feature to identify the best place to stay the night. Somewhere quiet for a good (short) night’s rest.

The next morning, the party gathers at the ship. Captain Cerax waits for you guys. Once there, he tells you, "Good morning gentlemen. If you are ready, please board the ship and I will introduce you to the crew. The crew is criminally small. It consists of only 10 people excluding the Captain, the first mate, the quartermaster and you guys. None of these 10 look like they can fight. The captain clearly knows how to use a sword though and might even be pretty good with it. There is also the first mate who looks like an apprentice wizard. He looks to be in his 20s and has brown, messy hair and blue robes. He is a fair skinned human who is 5ft 8in tall. The quarter master is an half-orc male in his 30s. He has a black beard and a scar across his right eye. He is taller than the captain, standing at 6ft 8in. He has leafy green skin. He has an annoyed look at his face and a badge on his hide armor.
Ships in Rurik are classified into 4 classes based on their size. The classes were named for military ships so they have names that would suggest destructive power but even unarmed merchant ships are also put into these classes based on size. Like most merchant ships, The Vortex is a Cruiser Class. The purple colored ship itself has 3 levels or floors. Level C and level B are below deck with C being the lowest level. Level A is the deck level. Level C has most of the supplies. Level B contains the ships main weapons and ammo as well as crew lodgings. Level A has the captains quarters, the dinning room, the kitchen and the bridge of the ship. It also has the crows nest and sails.
Military Cruiser class ships usually come equipped with powerful mid and short range weaponry and decent long range capabilities. They are also have the best anti-air weaponry of any ship. However, for this mission, The Vortex has had most of its powerful weaponry removed in favor of fooling the pirates into attacking. Even still it is equipped with a Grapeshot Catapult on Level A and Dual-shot Ballistas at Level B. To gain an edge on the pirates, its mid-range weapon has been carefully camouflaged so that the pirates can't see it until its too late. It's mid range weapon on Level B is the Radiant Blaster, a magical siege weapon that can strike a target 600ft away with a powerful beam of radiant energy. The Grapeshot is standard self-defense weaponry on merchant ships and the dual-shot, though not very common, can be seen on richer, bigger merchant ships. The Blaster is only seen on ships of war.
"so..." Val whispers to Gendan "they are sending a vessel to hunt pirates without any kind of warriors on board save ourselves... Well, I think Runt could use the exercise... "
"I am starting to see now why the request had been amde given the circumstances." Devarus comments at one point or another after realizing the number of sailors aboard the ship. "I only have a passing understanding of half of these weapons on board... Captain? May one of your men shows at some point how to operate these once we're off?" He asks among other questions; such as how long the Vortex had been in service, the general experience of the crew in noncombat situations, had word already been spread throughout the 'roper' channels to try and sell any pirate spies on attacking the shiip, and so forth.
Although Devarus had been at first content to drink everything in without comment, the old guardsman's training started raring its head.

The captain says, "The crew here are not trained for direct combat. That is why you were hired. They are however, trained with the use of these weapons and are on board to keep the ship running and for ship-based combat. They can show you but we are advised to not fire off any of the weapons since it would make the pirates suspicious. Finally the Vortex has been around for a year but it has only seen use outside of tests for 3 patrol missions. It has been painted purple and given merchant flags for this mission. We have tried our best to spread rumors of a merchant ship that will be sailing from Cosmer to Venoport. Hopefully the pirates will attack us and soon realize what Rurik's siege weapons are capable of,"
Runt cant help but exude excitement . The thought of cracking pirate skulls is starting to bring her out of her depression. For now she pays little attention to the half orc crewman.
(Flashback RP. Run will visit a magic weapon shop if there is one in search for a javalin or handaxe that can be recalled to her hand magically)

The Captain says, "You will be show how to operate the weaponry during travel. The tactics of these pirates is to board ships with fast moving Destroyer Class Ships and take over. What we will do is let them get close and board our ship. We will be peppering them with the Grapeshot. It is a weapon designed to attack the crew rather than the hull of the ship. Then once they are in boarding range, we will open fire on them with the dual shot catapult and get in to boarding distance. We will be hitting he pirates with our ranged attacks such as bows and cantrips and then capture them, letting their ship sink."
