"Wonder why these boats are left here," Janek muses. "Especially with one still out there fishing. Seems too far from town to just leave them here." He shrugs. "Maybe I'm just being paranoid."
Alcazar comes out of the near somnolent state he seems to have been in, puzzling over Janek's words then glancing from the boats to the loan fisher. The mysteries of things such as fishing and farming had always escaped him; hunters and fishers usually has their methods and reasons. He shrugs and looks up the road toward the town.
"Boats are not cheap, but then again we've met so few on the road, who would steal them?" Wriknkling his nose he nods toward the distant fisher, "I suppose we could ask."
The fisherman is not too far out, allowing you to observe him easily. As stand by the lake and watch, the fisherman pulls up his rod, examines the untouched lure at the end of this hook and lack of a fish. With some frustration, he sighs. You continue to watch as he puts down the fishing rod in the boat and bends down to pick up something heavy from the bottom of his small boat. He picks up a large burlap sack, about 4-5ft long and with its end tied off with Hempen rope.
He hefts it up onto his shoulder. The bag wriggles and writhes with movement, as if something or something was struggling inside.
He looks at his rod, sighs again, and throws the wriggling sack into the water just by the boat. He then calmly lifts his rod and throws out his fishing line once more, clearly hoping that his luck will turn and he will catch a fish this time.
"Did you see that?"Celeste says in a very worried tone to the others, still looking out at the man in the boat. "There was something alive in that sack."She continues, looking around desperately at the others, but not sure what to do.
(Okay, could we reasonably rescue what was in that sack or is it simply too far out?)
Janek sighs, "Mighty odd way to fish." He steps closer to the shoreline and the boats left by the shore. He also tries to judge whether it's even possible to get out there to help anyone in that sack. "Perhaps we could borrow a boat or two to check it out."
Pulled up along the south shore, close to the road you are walking on, are three small rowboats.
The other three boats are still there. If you want to row out rapidly to get the now-sinking wriggling sack, make a DC Athletics check. No check necessary if you just casually row out.
"Well, don't just stand there, we need to hurry if we are to save whatever was in that sack." Celeste says with desperation in her voice. "My lord Milil will grant you the strength to get us there in time." She adds, turned to Janek who seems the the strongest to her, calling upon the divine miracles of her lord Milil to enhance the dark rugged man's strength, uttering a short prayer in elven while touching the man's chest, her tiara briefly shimmering with divine radiance. "Now hurry!" She says, turning to run down to one of the row boats.
Janek simply nods to Celeste, working to get one boat into the water, with the Elf in it. Pushing it away from shore he then jumps in, not worried of he gets a little wet. He tries to row out quickly.
(Athletics Check: 25; not sure what the 'divine miracle to enhance strength' was precisely, if Guidance then add 3)
(Oops, sorry enhance strength was the Enhance Ability spell which would give advantage on strength rolls, not that it was needed ;-) also the carrying capacity doubles though :-)

You jump into the small boat and row as fast as you can. The boat skims over the water at a speed that would make even a professional blush with envy. You reach the brown sack which is just bobbing up and down as whatever is insides keeps struggling. You lean over the side if the boat, reaching deep into the water and managed to snag it. Pulling it out into your own boat, water flows from the Brian bag, the wriggling slows down a little and you hear a spluttering cough from the inside of the bag.
Quickly untying the top, you open the bag and find inside a young girl with red hair, perhaps 12 years or so old, who is now gasping for breath and coughing up more water.
The fisherman in the meantime seems totally oblivious to the events going on. He glances over briefly as your boat approaches but doesn't seem to be interested in you at all, instead continuing to quietly staring at his fishing line, presumably still hoping and waiting for a fish.
Rodan walks slowly toward the shore, a but dumbfounded by all of this. "Bloody Hells, did I see that right? Was there a bloomin' person in that sack? What in the Realms is goin' on here? This whole place is sick in th' head...".

The blonde elven maiden desperately tries to make sure the young girl can breathe, holding the wet child in her lap to comfort her after the traumatic event, giving Janek a glare to be gentle with her. "There, there you are safe now little one."She says with a soothing voice, holding the girl close.

Staying on the shore as the others made off in the boat, Thulewyn watches the boat fly acrossed the water and then a girl come out of the bag. "Check the neck!" He shouts. Seeing the reaction of the fisherman or lack there of, Thulewyn knocks and an arrow. "Ah hoy there mate, appears you dropped something."

The girl coughs and spits up some water for a bit longer, but seems to be recovering with your assistance. When she catches her breath she responds "Thank you for saving me. I nearly drowned!" Turning to the man on the boat, she starts swearing angrily "You gods-damned, soulless, rotten, %@$ of a *%&@!$, @*%&$! $&!*%@. I hope you @$*&%! &$* %!&* in &!%* &$! with a !*&%@ !*$@ &$% you %!& %&!$@ %*&". (Her rant of swearing quickly reverts to the language you heard the Vistani use amongst themselves last night when you stayed with them.)
The man looks at her with mild interest and turns back to his fishing rod.
Janek, now taking a brief test from his vigorous rowing, glances at the child. "Who might you be? And how did you end up in that bag?"
He glances over towards the man and the other boat as he walks for a response.
Having caught her breath again after he long ranting shout, she responds "Thanks again. I think from his mumbling earlier that this nutcase tried to offer me as a sacrifice to the lake to get some fish."
Seeing the reaction of the fisherman or lack there of, Thulewyn knocks and an arrow. "Ah hoy there mate, appears you dropped something."
The man looks across as you call to him, with a look that seems to almost border on boredom. He just sits in his boat with his fishing rod, as if nothing unusual has happened. He responds to your call in a somewhat puzzled manner, as if surprised why you would be asking such an obvious question. "Yes. I dropped her. " he says, pointing to the child, before adding: "Not been a good week for fishing." He then continues to stare at his fishing rod, which sits quietly in the water with still no fish biting.

The blonde elven maiden feels fury building within her as she realizes just how ruthless, or maybe even insane the fisher is, but she tries to stay calm to further sooth the child.

It's clear to you that throwing a child into a lake to drown is not the act of a normal person. Although whether insane or evil seeks unclear.
The man continues to sit on the boat, waiting for the fish to bite - almost as if nothing at all had happened. If it wasn't for the fact that there's a very wet and angry young girl with you, you might even start to doubt what you saw.
"I was kinda figurin maybe that sack would be big enough for the cuss. He looks one good stiff breeze would be enough to do him in." Gust to try and push the man, 5' in an attempt to make him fall in the water STR ST DC13.
Celeste smiles and nods in agreement with the elf. "A little sunlight would likely do wonders for the entire domain."

"Oh no. Hells no. Tulleyw'n, go on 'head and shoot this bleedin' nutter."
[Thulewyn may take a dice of bardic inspiration.]
