It's really intended to be more of a damage boost for the sling, which is one of the few ranged weapons on the druid proficiency list.
BtW, it seems that the sling, in properly trained hands, was a more effective weapon than a modern slingshot. Matching velocity and range with a larger/heavier projectile.
Also, the sling is a one-handed weapon. Slingshot uses two.
ya know, if SOMEONE knew a spell (cantrip) like Magic Stone, your slingshot could do even more damage. :p
Good point, but I don't know if it would effectively do more damage, in the end...
From what we decided, the original damage should be the one of a Longbow, so 1d8 + attacker's dex modifier, not a bad damage already.
The Magic Stone would allow the stone to do instead 1d6 + spellcaster's ability modifier (the damage would substitute the normal one, not be added to it).
Thus, using the spell would only lead to more damage if the caster's skill modifier exceeded the attacker's dexterity modifier by 2.
I'm afraid you would hardly get a big improvement for the slingshot - it could perhaps be more useful for empowering another character, one without slingshot (and without powerful ranged weapons), allowing them to attack effectively from a distance.
You know, that's not a bad idea. Gaer is certainly proficient in the longbow and could just as well buy one and pass his slingshot on to another character ... and since an actual slingshot is easier to use than an actual longbow (bc the fork basically gives you a bit of an aiming sight device automatically) I would think it would be considered simple rather than martial.
Actually the only reason I thought of this in the first place is I'm a little obsessive about damage types, and I didn't know how many creatures were immune or took less damage from piercing. And looking at high-range fired missile weapons as opposed to low-range thrown weapons, they're all piercing except for the crappy-damage sling.
I didn't think of it at the time, but he might be able to get the same effect with an actual longbow by making special arrows with a blunt lead ball for a tip instead of a point ... maybe get the bludgeoning damage at the cost of some reduction of range bc the lead arrows are less well balanced and heavier? Perhaps a bit of damage reduction since you don;t get the blade and point cutting/penetrating effect, but definitely better than the sling with the bow's power behind it.

1) How many players are you planning on for your party?
2) Are you planning just one play through, or multiple play-tests with different groups?
Thanks for the additional info!
You're welcome!
1) My original idea is 6 characters - but that's not set in stone, if when deciding I feel like I have a good reason to select a few less (unlikely) or a few more (maybe), I will.
2) Initially, I thought of just one group, but the idea of multiple play-tests with different groups was already coming to me... The point is, I'm still not sure whether it's something I'm capable of doing or not. You know, for me, when I do something, it's important to try to do it to the best of my ability and already being the Dungeon Mistress of a group will be something new to me... something that will probably require much more commitment than the role of player which until now I have covered (and still cover) in various campaigns. So, organizing multiple campaigns at once I'm afraid it will become too much for me, with the risk of managing them badly. It's more likely that maybe I'll organize a second group at a later time... once I've either finished the first campaign or realized I can do it without the quality suffering. But, even in this case, the final decision will be made near the end of the selection, because if I really had so many well-made and fascinating characters, organizing a second group would become a real temptation... and I can resist anything except temptation! 😉
Looks like you already have quite a few good characters to choose from so I think I'm going to thin the herd a bit and pull Neni from consideration. Thank you so much for your time and best of luck with the play test!

Name: Ari
Race: Variant Human
Class: Warlock
Background: Sage
Physical Appearance: Ari is only 24 years old, but she looks much older. She has dark circles beneath her eyes, withered skin, and strands of gray hair. Ari has her tome of spells with her at all times, she usually keeps it in a small pouch hanging from her side. She wears a tattered robe with all sorts of odd items ranging from lizard legs to frog heads.
Backstory: Ari has no memory of who her parents where or what they where like, but she guesses they must have pretty awful since they sold their own daughter into slavery.
As a child; Ari had one master after another, her masters found her to be rebellious and strong-willed so she never had one master for very long. Everything changed when she found the tome. Ari was about twelve years old at the time; she was sleeping on the floor of her current master's attic. Her current master was a nobleman who had a large and spacious house, but of course he couldn't afford to spare a bedroom for a slave. When Ari was about to fall asleep when she saw an old and dusty book lying on the floor of the attic. Something about the book grabbed Ari's attention. She picked up the book and found all sorts of strange secrets and forbidden magic hiding inside of the tome. At first the tome seemed insane and confusing to Ari; but the more she read, the more she understood. Ari had never been completely sane, but reading that book changed her in ways that could never be reversed or undone. Ari didn't sleep at all the night; she spent the entire night reading the book and gathering whatever information she could from it. Her master found her book in the morning and burned it. But she wouldn't lose the magical secrets the tome contained so easily.
From that point on; Ari gathered sheets of paper wherever she could and wrote out what she could remember from the tome, she also gathered the items she would need to cast the spells she discovered and hid them form her masters. As she wrote it, she heard a voice begin to call out to her, promising arcane power and freedom from slavery. After three years Ari had assembled a smaller version of the tome that had changed her life. She used her newfound abilities to kill her current masters and gain freedom. After that; the voice in Ari's head grew stronger and she continued to add to her tome.
After years of gathering spells for her tome; Ari heard about the Harpells and their vast stores of magical knowledge. The voice told her to head for Longsaddle and search for the Harpells and add their magical knowledge to her tome. Ari obeyed the voice and headed to Longsaddle in search of magical knowledge.
Personality: I am sympathetic to those who are going through what I did. I am suspicious of everyone, anyone could betray me.
Bond: I am following the commands of a voice inside my head, and the voice is telling me to gain more magical knowledge to add to my tome.
Flaw: I am obsessed with gaining more magical knowledge and will get it at any cost.
RP Moment: Ari sits alone in the Night Cloak Inn, drinking a small mug of ale. She eyes everyone else in the inn suspiciously. She looks to the patrons seated in the inn, but doesn't see any of the Harpells. Ari hears the voice in her head again; encouraging her to leave the inn and look for the Harpells elsewhere. Ari finishes her ale and prepares to leave the inn. The Harpells may be harder to find than Ari had thought, but she had never been one to give up easily.
I'm aware that the Warlock's pact boon isn't available until level 3, but I was wondering if Ari could have the tome, but not be able to actually the Pact of the Tome ability until she reaches level 3, since discovering the tome and attempting to recreate it is a big part of Ari's backstory. Could that be okay?
Looks like you already have quite a few good characters to choose from so I think I'm going to thin the herd a bit and pull Neni from consideration. Thank you so much for your time and best of luck with the play test!
It's a pity... do you perhaps think that Neni is not a 'good character'? However, I understand, sometimes I too have thought it appropriate to withdraw an application; if something makes you think it's for the best, I thank you for the attention you have given me up to now and for the best wishes - which I reciprocate: best of luck with possible other campaigns.
If you change your mind before the selection is complete and you want me to take Neni back into consideration, just write here.
Tarysaa Sōlus -- Dusk was settling in as she entered the limits of Longsaddle. Not really a village nor town, rather a long avenue with buildings running down both sides of the road. Sunset seemed to be the signal for the end of the workday, as many craftsmen and laborers came out of their buildings to form a river of men and women headed home for the day. Not wishing to be part of this river of humanity, she stood under the eaves of a closed shop and studied the press of bodies as they walked, sauntered, or shuffled their way toward the relative safety of their homes. Some few veered from the crowd to enter various structures that one could assume were taverns or eateries.
Feeling the weight of a long journey nearing it's end (for now), Tarysaa aimed for one of the larger buildings in the hopes of a decent, warm meal, a secure room, and maybe even a chance to bathe. Each step was harder to take than the one before it, like an invisible weight pressed against her; feet turning to lead with each step. The shadows rolled in fast in this land. Fatigue blurred the moment, and more than once Tarysaa found herself standing still with no attention spent to those around her. A shiver up her spine snapped her back into focus, "I would have been an easy mark for a pickpocket, though few would dare to steal from a wizard," she muttered as she stood before a door.
Why here? Why not the overly large and boisterous (by the sounds) tavern passed by moments before? Why walk from one end of the town to the other before maneuvering to this particular door? Glancing at the slightly swinging board, Tarysaa read, "The Night Cloak Inn." heh... "Probably the den of those rogues and pickpockets I imagined earlier." Stepping inside, she could not help but smile as a very familiar sensation assailed her senses. The air inside was thick with magic. Tarysaa could almost taste it as well as the vibrations in her bones. Glancing about, she noted the animated brooms moving about the room cleaning diligently as well as the shimmer from invisible servants flitting from table to table delivering steaming dishes and drinks as well as removing dirty dishes and mugs in need of refills. She sighed and her tension filled shoulders sunk down. Perhaps THIS is what led her here; that feeling she had not had since leaving the University. "Feels almost like home..."
Finding a free table in a far corner, Tarysaa sagged down onto the bench and took a moment to gather her wits. "Hello, Stranger!" whispered a figure that seemed to appear from nowhere. "How might we serve you tonight?" Tarysa looked over the figure, "A hot meal and drink with a possible bed for at least a night?" The figure smiled, "Say no more. I can sense a kindred spirit in need of some much needed rest and food. The food and drink will be out shortly. Let me check on an available bed." Tarysaa took note of the old woman with numerous but shallow wrinkles, who somehow still seems to be able to keep up with time: those brown eyes sparkled with a keen intelligence that belied her apparent years, her step is still brisk as she moved about the room, her posture just slightly hunched over and some of her hair still retained its original jet-black color (even if it is no more than a few strands in the dense and neat hair of straight white hair). "Kindred spirit... "

Your proposal for Ari's Tome works for me! Let's her have the Tome from the start - and of course get Pact of Tome at level 3.
Just two small requests:
1) Next time, keep in mind that if you edit your post without quoting the rolls, you have a high chance (practically 100%) that the dice roller would roll them again and give you the "This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results" warning. So don't edit your original post, if you have rolls in it - either make a new post, if you have more info to add, or quote it, if you really need to do corrections in it. Most of the times, I simply keep the rolls in a first post, then add all other info in other posts, without rolls, so I'm safe to edit them.
2) In the RP moment you presented, Ari didn't hear about the quest. That's not ok - the RP moment needs instead to be about that - how Ari reacts to the news and why she's interested (and it's important that she is...since she's supposed to take part in the quest). I know, she is interested in the magical knowledge of the Harpells - and that's great. But we also need a motivation for her to help Martha (the motivation could also be simply that, since Martha is a member of a powerful family, the Sharnshields, maybe helping her will help Ari connect with the Harpells - or whatever you can think of - but the key point is, we need a reason to help Martha). So, if you can make a new RP post in line with the above, it would be great.
It's a pity... do you perhaps think that Neni is not a 'good character'?
Nothing like that! I just know from experience that I'm happier in a party in the 3-5 player range and this looks like it's going to be 6 or more. Plus there's a few new faces here and I'd hate for someone like me with more than one active campaign already to steal their chance at a slot. Not that I'm arrogant enough to think I'm in, just that if someone drops out everyone else's odds go up.
Thanks for the offer to let me resubmit if I change my mind!

I apologize, here's the revised version.
RP Moment (Revised)- Ari sat and drank from a small flagon of ale in the corner of the Night Cloak Inn. She could hear the sounds of chatter and music around her. She looks around the inn; searching for one of the Harpells. The voice had described each member of the family to Ari, but Ari didn't see any of them. Disappointed; Ari took another sip from her mug of ale, the warmth of the drink comforted her. That's when Ari heard a quiet whisper directly behind her.
"You're Ari right? I heard you came here looking for the Harpells, I might be able to help with that." Ari turned to face the source of the whisper. She recognized the woman instantly; she was Martha Sharnshield, a well known figure in Longsaddle. Martha was known for being a powerful figure in Longsaddle, with connections to even more powerful figures. "How do you know my name?" Ari demanded. "Or why I'm here?" Martha seemed amused by Ari's reaction; Ari distrusted most people, but she had an especially bad feeling about this woman. "I have my ways, but how I know isn't important." Martha paused, waiting for Ari to respond. Ari became even more irritated, who did she think she was? Ari decided to get straight to the point. "What do you want?" Martha waited for a little while before responding. "I want to trade."
This has been a really interesting way to recruit- it’s almost like an open session zero rather than signups

Sorry, I accidently left out the subclass (Great Old One).
In modern times, 'practice/target' tips can be blunt rather than razorblades. Adding 'an iron/lead ball' to the shaft would really mess up the flight characteristics of an arrow, imo. With either a slingshot or sling, you can 'make do' with rocks you gather along the way. OR, get fancy with some lead shot. OR, silver dipped lead balls. That way you have some nice smashing ammo ... with a few silver in case you have to run off a were raccoon that is into your trash bins out back of the tavern. :D
Good point. I've dabbled in archery IRL but wasn't aware HOW badly that sort of thing would mess up the aerodynamics. I suppose practice/target tips would work just as well in this situation. Perhaps hardened at the contact point but not weighted, or drilled and weighted THROUGHOUT the shaft so it would be balanced?

If you want to recruit co-DMs to help run several groups, I know I've heard that mentioned on this site but not quite sure how it works. And if that is something you are planning and you wish to further honor me by considering my name as one of the pool of applicants I'd be more than happy to help out that way

1) How many players are you planning on for your party?
2) Are you planning just one play through, or multiple play-tests with different groups?
Thanks for the additional info!
... ... ...
If you want to recruit co-DMs to help run several groups, I know I've heard that mentioned on this site but not quite sure how it works. And if that is something you are planning and you wish to further honor me by considering my name as one of the pool of applicants I'd be more than happy to help out that way
This has been a really interesting way to recruit- it’s almost like an open session zero rather than signups
Yes indeed it was an experiment (I've never tried anything like this - never having recruited before) but I'm happy with how it's turning out! It's very fascinating to choose between characters that you already begin to see in action firsthand.
"I quite understand. We're all women here, after all, we know what men can be like sometimes." Lol!
And now just let's hope poor Spira will be able to find Gaer again!
LOL indeed ;>
Have to be totally honest though. Ever since I put together the title of the thread, that roguish Dobbian and Erah's referring so delicately to Martha's "condition", I've been planning to go with RP#4 and play a female character SPECIFICALLY so I could write that line in (re-LOL) ...
so probably would have wound up throwing poor Gaer to the NPCs anyway (re-re-LOL)

Just a few follow up questions.

It's a pity... do you perhaps think that Neni is not a 'good character'? However, I understand, sometimes I too have thought it appropriate to withdraw an application; if something makes you think it's for the best, I thank you for the attention you have given me up to now and for the best wishes - which I reciprocate: best of luck with possible other campaigns.
If you change your mind before the selection is complete and you want me to take Neni back into consideration, just write here.
Tarysaa Sōlus --
Dusk was settling in as she entered the limits of Longsaddle.
