"I feel like this is a bit of a longshot, as I have already made clear," the half-orc replies to Aidwyn. "And it certainly would be in character for a Bard to disappear rather than raise his child... my own father did that, unfortunately. But in a world saturated with magic as ours, I have certainly heard of stranger things than artifacts that can raise the dead. And I would much rather give that poor woman hope than leave her in despair, especially right before the birth of her child."
"Well, we can at least see what we think of this Collin," Roxana tells the others. She doesn't let on but is worried once again that maybe this is silly to run off chasing for a cure for a dead man. 'I imagine if we return empty-handed Martha isn't going to give us anything,' she things. To get her mind off that line of thought she presses on. "I suppose the under-bridge path would begin with us going under the bridge?" She starts off in that direction, hoping once she gets there more clues as to how the bridge works might present themselves.
Aidwyn waits for the others jusst outside the room, and when they all are outside and after saying her goodbyes to the little Thia, she waits to speak again until they are far from the house.
"I am sorry for my outburst with that elf... but I do pity Lady Martha. I do not know what are your ideas about this but I will speak my mind about this. I have a lot of concerns. It seems to me that this diviner had taken advantage of the pain of Lady Martha to gain access to the Harpells... and they probably know about it but had decided to take the coin and gain a favor with Martha's family anyway... The poor woman is on denial, but I do understand her reasons. I rather go outthere and come back empty handed that break his hope and heart once again. This way at least she had tried. For all we know, the bard could be in colusion with the rest of the family, had accepted some coin to feing his own death and leaved to run from the responsabilities of fatherhood... or we could go to that hill, find some ancient artifact and thanks to Tyr bring him back to live so he can raise his child... I do not know but I must be honest, I do have few hopes for a happy ending... what do you guys think?"
Once in the bridge she waits and looks interested, amazed and a little bit apprehensive about the whole under-bridge situation.
As Aidwyn lays out her reasoning, Spira slowly nods. "I agree that we very well may find that there is no way to bring Dobbian back and we've been following the word of a charlatan, but in that case I think we'd want to know as much about that charlatan as possible to help us seek justice for ourselves and Martha. But I also agree that in our world anything can happen, as we have had much more proof than we've wanted of late years. And I think that sneering elf at least believed he had reason to fear that we might succeed. He slipped there at the end: he started out pretending to be concerned for Martha, that we'd raise false hopes we were bound to disappoint I believe he said,
"Sellers of false hopes, I suppose. The pleasure is all yours. So you, instead of helping Martha to accept reality, have given her to understand that you can bring that scoundrel back to life?"
But near the end, when we'd stung him enough. he slipped for one moment. He said,
"Maybe then I could do the courtesy of providing some information to these esteemed guests... Something that could open their eyes on the qualities of the person they are about to bring back from the grave... Are you by any chance interested in learning the details on the sad passing of that little parasite, Dobbian?"
He spoke for that one moment as one who truly believes that we CAN bring Dobbian back ... that we are ABOUT to do it.
Either way, I think its worth getting as much information as we can here ... if we can figure out the secret of walking under the bridge. I don't suppose I simply didn't speak loud enough?" She walks to within five feet of the bridgehead, mutters under her breath and then repeats what she said in the booming voice she had used before:
"We are visitors who wish to speak to the Harpells on a matter of business. This young lady knows at whose recommendation we have come." She gestures towards Roxana. "We were told to cross by the Under-bridge?"
If there is no reply, she kneels and begins to examine the beginning of the bridge more closely, paying close attention to the place the sides of the bridge touch the riverbank.
On Spira's second attempt, you see a door open in the main building of the Ivy Mansion. A slightly oversized black cat comes out, turns to the door for a moment, and exclaims, indignant: "MMMEEEOOOWW!"
The door quickly closes and the feline, slightly disappointed, turns towards you, begins to advance, reaches the edge of the bridge, sticks its head under the bridge for a moment, then starts looking at you again and, with a questioning air, asks you: "MEOW?"
A puff of wind more annoying than the others makes it and you shiver, at which, muttering "MMEEOOOW..." the cat crosses the bridge, passing over it quietly and reaching you.
The creature looks at you with a pitying air, shaking its head, then makes a small leap that takes it under the bridge... and thus you witness the bizarre phenomenon: instead of falling into the river, the cat adheres with its paws to the lower part of the bridge; you see the feline now, upside down, as it leans its head towards you and exhorts you: "MEOWW!"
Walking under the bridge, still upside down, but with extreme naturalness, the cat crosses the river, then, with a new small leap, jumps out from under the bridge... and gravity resumes its usual operation, now making its paws adhere to the ground.
"Well!" Roxana exclaims after watching the cat. "I guess we can do that." She strides forward, placing her hands down at her sides to hold her cloak and dress in place, still not quite sure how this all will work. She makes the small hop down to see what happens. Presuming she follows the same way that the cat did, she will very slowly walk across the underside of the bridge. At the other end she tries to mimic a hop like the cat made.
It is a strange sensation, for Roxana and Aidwyn: as soon as you hop under the bridge, you feel yourself turned upside down... but then all appears to be normal for you - you feel like you are walking on an inverted bridge... watching all around, an inverted world. Then, when you hop out at the end of the Underbridge, the process inverts and here you are, with your feet on the ground, near the cat, who patiently waits for all of you to come.
"MEOW" the feline tells you, not too enthusiastically, leading to the door it came from. The door opens and it enters...
(OOC: I assume that the other characters follow the example of Roxana and Aidwyn, as this is the behavior that seems most probable to me. If the characters want to do differently, of course, post what they do and then we'll fix things)
Entering through the door after the cat, you find yourself in a domed, circular hall. In the center is a hearth and chimney that winds in a peculiar path up toward the ceiling. Walls are covered in an eclectic mix of arcane trinkets, framed spellbooks, stuffed heads of monstrosities and portraits of stuffy wizards. The thrumming of arcane and scents of conjured drinks fills the air. A few feet from the hearth is a curved bar that extends out into a curiously placed conductor podium. The rest of the room is filled with a vast array of feasting tables, where guests await translucent blue disks to hover near, teetering with food and drinks.
You have the distinct impression of having entered a sort of Magical Inn.
Roxana:
In fact, like all locals, you know that the Ivy Mansion also includes an Inn run by the Harpells - and very frequented by them, the "Fuzzy Quarterstaff". Evidently, that's where the cat led you.
"Oh, well done Kitty Purry!" the deep voice of a half-orc in a flamboyant star-quilted wizard's tunic congratulates the cat, beckoning you to join him at her table.
"Please, sit down... Did you want to talk about bus..." he begins to say, but immediately, noticing Rash, he stops and addresses only him "A member of my race... but who doesn't go around covered in stinking thick armor or brandishing big weapons! You have a quarterstaff, instead... Are you perhaps a wizard? Like me? And are you a Harpell too? Would you like to be one? What's your favorite familiar? Never pick the cat, I advise... they always tends to act as if you were theirs familiar! You also think that by combining divination and evocation you could create remote-controlled fireballs?"
Kitty Purry rolls her eyes (you realize she is a female cat, now that she is so nearby), then looks at you all with sympathy, muttering: "MEOW..." then cocking its tail and idly starting to rub herself against the legs of those not yet targeted by the half-orc's questions.
He couldn't argue with the Aidwyn woman's doubts about this whole mission but he wanted to believe in it all, that the dead could be brought back, not only for the sake of their client but also for himself for a slight hope of salvation. As they reached the weird wizard bridge the white-haired warrior gives it a long skeptical look before following the others, feeling more queezy on the other side than he wanted to admit. He was at least relieved to find the familiar sight of a bar inside the Harpell mansion, immediately stomping off the snow on his boots and striding over there, hoping to order a plain non-weird non-magical beer while the more talkative ones sorted out whatever they came here to sort out. Being quite suspicios and wary of this strange place he keeps a good eye on the tap room to see if anyone takes special interest in the team and their business here.
As he is confident no one is taking an unhealthy interest in him or his new companions, the white-haired warrior refocuses his perceptive powers to locate a bartender in order to have that beer.
Refocusung his perceptive powers to locate a bartender, Obadiah notices another peculiarity of the Inn: nobody comes to ask for orders. When a patron wants something, they hit a sort of green gem in the center of the table (each table has one) then tell to the gems what they want - and after a while one of the self-moving blue energy disks comes with what has been ordered. The gem says how much the patron must pay, they put the coins on the disk and it is done.
So, to summarize, it seems Obadiah needs to sit at a table, to use a gem and order... does he choose a table for himself only? Or does he sit with the half-orc and the party?
(Anyway, once he sits and uses a gem, no problem, the beer quickly comes as ordered).
Realizing how the weird wizards solution for barservice, Obadiah can't quite figure out why the barcounter has no green gem for ordering beverages. With a tired sigh he walks over and takes a heavy seat with the others, ordering a large but plain non-weird non-magical tankard of beer. "We're here on behalf of Lady Sharnshield and we need to speak to Collin."He then explains to the half-orcish Harpell. "And we're in a hurry." He adds with a firm tone.
(OOC: Lol! I think Obadiah is right - and I'd improve the Inn's service, if it was something I created, but that's a part I took from a module of other authors, a module about Longsaddle in general)
"How rude to interrupt me like this!" protests the Harpell half-orc "Can't you see I'm discussing important matters with a colleague? Plus, if in a hurry, why not to speak to Colin directly? He is right there!" (and he points to a middle-aged man with mo less white hairs than the barbarian) "Plus, don't you think hurry is a thing of the past, given the power of magic to manipulate time, like casting Time Stop? Or Haste, if you really want to spare your arcane energy... But if you want to spare energy, how can you pretend to be in a hurry?"
Obadiah sighs and stands up, moving over to the table the Harpell half-orc indicated, taking another heavy seat. "You Colin?" He says with a stern voice, leaning forward in his chair, grabbing the large but plain non-weird non-magical tankard of beer as it comes floating on the blue magical disc, putting the necessary coins on it to pay for what he's about to drink, then taking a big swig. "Lady Sharnshield sent us. Tell us about that divination you did for her, every detail, and we will be out of here again."
Insight to sense if he's straying from the truth: 2
The middle-aged man, who is wearing a loose red tunic with large rune-trimmed sleeves, smiles amicably (his expression lines suggest a person who does this often), glancing curiously first at Obadiah, then at the table from which he came, to finally return his brown eyes to those of Obadiah again: "Oh, wonderful! Surely you are talking about Lady Martha Sharnshield, that young woman hit by that grave misfortune. I really hoped that the divination I cast for her could be useful - and desperate as her case might appear to most people, the result of the spell gave me confidence. I've received a response, an advice - and I passed it on to her".
"But, forgive me, Mr ..." Colin gets perplexed "How did you say your name is?"
(OOC: Since it is a rather irrelevant thing, in order not to waste time I assume that Obadiah will answer; if not, correct me, Oberon, and I will modify)
"Oh, wonderful, Mr. Obadiah" Colin resumes. "What I don't understand is what details you want exactly. I can hardly believe that the gestures and formulas of the spell would be of interest to you... I might think that you would ask me to repeat the exact words of the result of the divination - but that would also strike me as strange..." and his gaze becomes a little suspicious "...and if you were really sent by Lady Martha Sharnshield I expect you to know why it strikes me as strange. So... there's something I'm not understanding? What details would you be interested in?"
For Obadiah:
As you probably guess, given the roll, Obadiah doesn't get particular clues from Colin's facial expressions or attitude.
"I knew it was a waste of time coming to this place."The white-haired warrior snarls, taking another swig of his beer and standing up. "If I find you've been holding back any information that would have helped us find the means to bring the father back I will make you will regret it wizard."He continues, his feral yellow eyes flaring with rage, then turning to leave for Triboar road.
"Hey, wait pal, easy..." Colin follows Obadiah trying to call him back "I ask you what details you want... and you threaten me? What's the matter? I'm only perplexed because you should know that the lady wrote verbatim what I told her... I did not hide anything from her - and I'm not hiding anything from you now either. I simply don't know what more I can say, ok? Had you a bad day? Next one is on me, if you like to stay. Why should we part ways on bad terms?"
"I have no time for being friendly with you wizard, if you do want to help, just answer my question as best as you can and I will be out of here. If you insist you having nothing helpful to tell me I should get going."The white-haired warrior says, turning to face Colin again.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Spira follows Colin and Obadiah out into the corridor. She speaks soothingly to Colin. "I am so sorry for this misunderstanding. I'm afraid we were rather shaken by an unpleasant encounter with an individual in the Shamshield family who seemed to have less interest in Martha's well being than in scoring points in whatever family politics are going on, and even I was upset by it more than I realized or I would have spoken sooner. If I remember correctly, the words Martha told us you spoke were,
"Once you follow the road to Triboar for about 4 miles, look for one of the hills to the west... the one that has a white marble arch that allows access to the underground from the south. You will find in there the means to save the father of your child - but you must act quickly, within a few days... and beware that there may be dangers lurking".
"We were hoping that perhaps some further seeing had come to you since you and Martha last spoke, or that you had only given her a synopsis out of consideration for not tiring her at this stage of her pregnancy, and perhaps had been planning to pass on further details to any who were hired for the job. I apologize again, though: we should have been better prepared for a possible disappointment ... unless perhaps there has come to you something that would help us to find this arch more quickly and have a better chance of succeeding?"
