Cal starts running full-speed towards the dunes. She climbs to the top, hoping to find the ocean on the other side, or maybe even a ship.
The sand slips under Cal's feet as she dashes up the dune as fast as her legs can carry her. The soft, whispering sounds of the sand falling down the dune after her fills the air. It's a tall sand dune. It takes her a bit to fully climb it. But when she does, panting, looking down, all she can see is a vast sea of more sand dunes. Not a single drop of water in sight.
However, she does see a taller mound of sand off in the distance.
Cal begins making her way over to the tallest sand dune, but before she does so she picks up a handful of the sand and lets it run through her fingers. She's never seen sand this colour, not in all her years of seafaring. Does she notice anything about it?
Anna also runs forward, grateful to hear anything in this dark void.
Anna can't see anything while she runs. It's all black. It's all so black that she only notices that she's arrived at the shore of a pitch-black, unfathomably expansive ocean until she's got both feet in it. It's unbearably cold. But the obsidian waves that lap at her feet beckon her forward.

Much to his dismay, imagining things does not help him.
It looks like they're standing on nothing, but they're clearly not falling, so there is solid ground.
He stomps twice, then crouches to feel the ground with his hands.
It feels like glass. It sounds like glass. It's cold to the touch, and completely invisible. It looks like Chiv's being held up by something from falling down into the bottomless, endless black void below him.

Picking up the sand, it feels a bit chalky. It's very fine, almost a powder. Disintegrated. It looks grey from afar, but it's made of billions of fine shards of black, grey, and white material all mixed together. A wind you can't feel blows the sand away from your hand and to the rest of the sand dunes in front of you.

This sand dune is colossal. It towers above over every other mound of sand. Standing at its peak, it actually looks like the sand dune is an entrance to a cave. Somewhat lining the entrance, jutting out at weird angles, are rounded square rocks. They're grey, with like black moss and grime creeping up the surface like plaque on a rogue tooth. From where you stand, you can't see what's inside the cave, but you could if you stood at its entrance.

Before taking the plunge, Anna will just check that there is absolutely no other sane place to go, as dark, cold water is like her polar opposite in every way.

The light doesn't help much; like before, the blackness from the inside of the cave seems to swallow up and stretch the light out into nothingness. But you take a step closer, and there appears to be a humanoid figure crumpled on the ground.

Well... the dust is floating out to sea. There doesn't seem like there's anything else outside the water. It feels wholly, entirely empty. Devoid. Diving into a freezing sea without equipment for sure isn't the most sane option in just any old circumstance, but this is not just any old circumstance.
Plus, it looks like there's something in the water.
