Starker looks pensive. “Perhaps the blue wizard is an unreliable witness?”
opening up his ritual book to another page, Starker petforms the rite to bring forth Jievz, the unseen servant. “Ware the piles of coin! I will have my unseen servant sift through them to see if either there is anything interesting or if they are indeed trapped. Unless anyone objects?”
if noone objects, Jievs is set to the task of moving armsful of the material in the pile (coins and other stuff) from the pile closer to the center of the room to the platform on the north wall. If no trap is sprung, this will continue, with Starker sitting on the stairs watching to see if anything interesting happens or if the pile material is remarkable. If it is, he will remark on it.
Chadwick will take one of the hoes and push around the sand/rock in the water and see if something might be hidden in there.
If nothing found...
Typically when an animal, like a deer, sleeps in an area over night they leave a fairly good imprint of where they were. Chadwick will start by the water and go west until he hits the wall, move up ten feet north, the walk east until he gets to the next wall, and keep going until he covers the cave.
Jievs dutifully appears and quietly awaits Starker's direction, as is his wont. Given instructions, he moves to remove the coins from the sand and bring them to Starker. After a period of time he is able to clear both areas of scattered coins upon the sand. Watching all of this, Starker concludes that the areas were the coins were located appears different. The sand is not as deep and on occasion, Jievs lifting a coin reveals an area underneath that appears glassy. Both areas are cleared and the coin total from this is 116cp, 27sp, 2gp.
Chadwick upon seeing Starker's progress strolls over to stand next to him, leaning on his hoe. "Clever. You've certainly made a nice addition to this party".
Once the sand is clear he'll tap on the glassy surface with his hoe to try and figure out what it is made of.
Starker is able to clear a space of the sand to reveal a glassy surface below.
Chadwick walks up to this and taps the surface with his hoe. A 15' diameter hole opens up as the glassy material shatters. This reveals a 20' deep pit with the same glassy surface at the base.
“Thank you. I need to see more of this world to understand how best to improve it by harnessing the powers in other realms. This is not a world where a solo adventurer of my relative inexperience would long survive. It is good to travel with others. (Cyrus Magnus protests at this perceived slight. Starker gives him a slice of mango.). I am glad to be of use.”
”’Ware the pit where the pile of coins used to be!” Starker calls out
Starker encores his “Dust in the Wind” performance on the other pile location.
Starker again clears the sand from where the second area of scattered coins was located. Again, a glassy surface is encountered at a shallow depth. It is now exposed showing the area of the potential trap.
Hoid and Gneuman continue digging at the area specified by Henilen.
Chadwick grabs a hammer and rope from the stuff we found. He goes over to the pit just uncovered and lowers the hammer to the next level of glassy surface and see it it breaks too. If it breaks he'll continue on until he hits an unbreakable floor or he runs out of rope.
Kragen moves away from the newly cleared potential pit trap and ventures over to the cell that held Henilen and Beggler, checking cell structure and stonework for oddities outside the cell and within.
Hoid, tiring of digging while others search where they eyewitness said not to search says, “Listen up you maggots, we were told those were pit traps and now you have confirmed they are, in fact, pit traps. Pull your heads out of wherever they are stuck and look at the facts. We saved the blue man. He told us where the traps are. He said the treasure was buried and the general location. We were blessed with tools for digging. Pick up some tools and start digging or provide a cogent explanation why we should all be working together towards another goal!”
If nothing of significance catches my notice examining the Cell, Kragen hears the gravely and grumpy Dwarf (named Hoid) berate the others for playing with traps. Chuckles to himself, sighs and grabs his Miners pick from his wares and begins to work in the general area that Hoid and Gnueman are working.
Kragen moves away from the newly cleared potential pit trap and ventures over to the cell that held Henilen and Beggler, checking cell structure and stonework for oddities outside the cell and within.
There is nothing that shows itself to Kragen. The orcs seem to have used a natural projection of the cave as a cell after adding iron bars and a door.
Chadwick grabs a hammer and rope from the stuff we found. He goes over to the pit just uncovered and lowers the hammer to the next level of glassy surface and see it it breaks too. If it breaks he'll continue on until he hits an unbreakable floor or he runs out of rope.
The bottom of the pit cracks with the hammer falling upon it. It breaks into sharp shards of the glassy substance. There is sand below. No further collapse occurs.
“I was half-convinced that the blue wizard was a vampire who had drained and enthralled the dwarf. However, that hypothesis is certainly not bolstered by our arduous confirmation of some of the information he gave us. Some, but not all. I will wield a shovel until we decide to go to the tower while the sun is still up.”
The group works together digging a hole in the sand growing deeper and wider. After another 20 minutes or so of everyone working at it Starker's shovel hits something soft. Careful digging around this reveals a small leather sack. Within the sack you find:
Small Leather Sack – Loose coins 140cp, 180sp, Small vial of cloudy green fluid with a jellyfish like bubble floating in it, Small leather pouch 4 gems 50gp (3 moonstone, 1 zircon)
“Let’s focus around the area where that sack was unearthed and keep digging. That does not seem sufficient for the blue man to make comments about the dragon’s greed.”
Was this buried deep enough that my detect magic attempts earlier would have missed something magical at that depth? If so, Starker performs the detect magic ritual again.
either way, do an Arcana check on the green liquid.
Chadwick who enjoys the sound of breaking glass more than digging (which he had his fill on the farm) looks longingly at the other trap before heading over to help expand the area being searched.
