Mina puts a hand on Elenor's shoulder as the woman tries to calm herself, "It's alright, we'll figure this out. You're alright and I think we all need to not go out at night."
Heading back into the Stonedog as things start dispersing outside, Mina catches sight of the two that were with Zale yesterday and heads over. "Hey there, you two were friends with Zale? Were you out with her last night? Any idea what happened?" She tries her best not to sound to accusatory, but knows she is still peppering them with questions, she can't help it.
Rowarin stands and sort of leans his shoulder a bit for Leeta to take a better look at Podrick. He stands on his back 2 paws, twitching his nose around the air as if trying to smell if Leeta has any goods. "My dear, I'll have you know I'm quite large for my kind. But yes, hello. You may call me Podrick."
Rowarin notices that the others are starting to head off back to the StoneDog. He glances at the body of Zale a moment, then turns and tries to catch everyones attention "Shouldn't we do something with the body? I mean, are we just leaving it here in the hall?"
Looking around for some cloth, if Rowarin is able to find any he will cover the body, bow his head to pay respect then leave with the others.
(Sorry, Soma started looking for Zale's friends, but changed course to just scout the edge of the forest after Rowaran shared his info on the legend.)
Mizu gives a nod before they head back to the Stonedog, leaving Soma outside to continue scouting (looking for anything suspicious near the forest, and for any sign that they could actually head off in that direction during the day). Once inside, Mizu joins Mina in talking to Zale's friends.
"We have recovered Zale's belongings. Did you know her well enough to return them to her family?"He's not sure if these people were actually working with Zale, or if they were just her local drinking buddies. "If you are locals, what do you know about the Legend of Whithermore."
Kulogall stands with crossed arms beside Mina, a frown on his face. Dark tidings, dark words, dark deeds have been done this day…. Why does it all seem to be at the edge of my brain, what am I missing? He searches for connections, trying to piece it together. As he listens to the questioning by Mina and Mizu, he watches body posture, intonation and inflection to listen for the truth in their words, pondering his next question, follow up on their response.
Insight (with help from the questioning of Mizu and Mina) : 17
Leeta almost jumps in surprise when the rat actually speaks back to her:
- Oh my gods, the rat's spoken! - she exclaims and stares at the rodent, not quite believing her eyes and ears. When she realizes that she's been staring for far too long and that she hasn't addressed Podrick by his name she clears her throat and adds - Uhm, sorry! It never occured to me that you'd be able to speak! Pardon my manners, my name is Leeta. Nice to meet you, Podrick.- Since Rowarin has leaned a little, the mini monk stands on tiptoes to handshake Podrick by approaching her right index finger to his front paws.
Back at the Stonedog, the halfling leaves the questioning to Mizu, Mina and Kulogall, but stands within earshot to listen to what's being said. Then she'll ask Bill and Liliana if they could prepare some food and water for the party, as they've decided to investigate the forest once again.
- We don't expect to spend many hours in there, but it's best if we go prepared just in case - she explains.
There wasn't much Rixi could ponder at this point. But to hear that lady's name coincide with the flower he had seen scattered about in the night... No... that sounds like red flag to take note of. He won't say it out loud just yet, but maybe, just maybe, when the investigation broadens, he will at some point reveal it... until he hears a squeak. Huh?
The rat... Podrick... uh... well... he doesn't have anything to say either about that... critter. Other than thinking about being a tabaxi's lunch for sure. Seeing that there was nothing else to offer, the paladin just... slowly lumbers back. Well, what else is there to search for at this point? He's not gonna stick out like a sore thumb for sure.
Inside the stonedog, Rixi again isolates himself from the pack, debating on whether he should remain seated on the current couch he's sitting on or just head back into his room until it's time to leave for the forest. He isn't fussy about where he goes or if the group changes their minds last minute, well, not that he has any plans of himself in the first place. But still... Rose... that lady... the flower... He grips his double-bladed weapon tightly with a flare in his eyes. Unless if proven otherwise, this is what he'll stick with for the moment.

Elenor seems to calm down as Mina speaks with her. "Not go out at night. Yes. That would be the logical action wouldn't it?"She lets out a nervous chuckle, "Perhaps Cassian will announce it to the town, if he can get them to attend some kind of town meeting that is..." She gives Mina a small smile, "I'll see what he thinks..."She starts to walk towards the hall then turns back to Mina, "I-I'm glad you and your friends are here. If anyone can put an end to this...I believe you can. Just...stay safe alright?"Then she scurries up to the Hall.
Inside the hall, Rowarin is quickly able to find a large tablecloth to cover Zale's body. Cassian nods his approval. "I'll keep watch over her here until we can give her a proper burial." With that, the three morticians head back towards the Stonedog, passing Elenor and meeting up with Mina on the way.
Inside the Stonedog, the party makes it's way over to Zale's 'friends'. The two men look up at Mizu and Mina as they start asking their questions. They look rather shaken. However, the human replies, "W-we didn't know her well, we were just acquaintances. She really hasn't been in town for long, but she'd drink with us most evenings. She was here to figure out the mystery ya know? She didn't speak much o her family, but she said she used to be somthin o a pirate before her ship went down?" He glances at the dwarf as if he's not sure if his answer is correct. The dwarf nods, "Yeah. Somethin like that. She was from somewhere on the Swordcoast me thinks." The two men nod, clearly their memory from nights spent around Zale may not be very good. "She didn't come back last night, but she always is out n about checkin for clues about the town...well was..." The human continues, then shakes his head, "She never was very open about anything she found."
When Mizu brings up the legend of Withermore, both men fall silent for a moment, the human looking a bit confused. "The legend of Withermore?" The Dwarf speaks up, "Ye mean that old wives tail about the witch? Well, most folks ain't tellin that to their children these days, but if me memory serves me, it had somethin to do with a pretty elf who had some disagreement with the town n ended up messin with dark magics. It went to far at some point n the townsfolk sealed her somewhere in the woods." He scratches his beard. "At least that's what I think it was. It ain't that popular o a story no more."
"Hey. Didn't Zale ask somethin about that too?" The human speaks up.
"Eh?" The dwarf responds, "Uh, maybe?"
As Kullogal watches these two, he feels like everything they say is true. At least they believe it is. They are a bit nervous, but after the incident, that's understandable.
Mizu:
As Soma patrols the forest, She notices a dark clad figure walking the treeline. Getting a closer look, she recognizes him. Seems Akyan has decided to go do his own thing. After walking a short distance, he pauses for a moment, then enters the woods...
Mizu eyes Zale's two 'acquaintances', tilting his head in thought before blinking and turning sharply towards Leeta.
"That dark elf... he's going into the woods alone," he says quietly (yet not so quiet that the others nearby wouldn't be able to hear). He looks to Rixian and Rowaran, clearly thinking that at least one of them should come if they decide to brave the woods. Personally, he would have gone there first if not for everyone wanting to ask more questions. In spite of his neutral expression, his anger about what happened last night is not something he can just let go. He still wants to storm into those woods and figure out what is causing all this. "The woods seem to be the root of this issue,"he pauses, frowning at himself as he realizes that he'd unintentionally made a joke. He shakes his head, "This legend may lend us answers, but I think we've gotten everything we can out of it for now."
He takes a step towards the door, eyes going distant as he briefly looks through Soma's eyes to gauge her location. Then he blinks, and looks back to the rest of the group, "We could follow the drow. Or head out on our own, either way, the forest seems like the best place to investigate now."
He instructs Soma to follow Akyan for now, just to keep an eye on him until the party decides what to do. He knows this will likely take her out of range, so he tells her to return if she loses contact with him.
So... there was nothing worth of value outside the tavern. What about the inside? Well, unlike the others, Rixi withdraws into a quiet corner despite standing upright. HE's got no desire to interact with anyone right now as he eavesdrops on the current conversation between the two men and his... supposed group. Sometimes hanging out alone provides an advantage that he gets to overhear stuff the group might have missed out, such as the girl's detective like habits and...
Hmm... Sword Coast... that's where Rixi's from. Kanojo mo... soko no shu shinan desu ka...?, (彼女もそこの出身なんですか, So she's from there, too?) He thinks as he goes over his notes in a dark corner. Rose... dark magic, Sword Coast... those flowers... It's all culminating in his head. But he doubts the others would even dare to believe what he ruminates right now. But... what does her location even signify? It's just a location. He never saw her once during the war against Tiamat either. And they sealed her? Didn't the Aasimar say she evaded the wrath of the townsfolk and went missing though?
Something's not right with what he pieced together. His head, swirled with info that he cannot answer for himself, his minds flips back to his team for a brief moment and then back to the present moment. It's not even his curse affecting him this time; There was something else that is perturbing these thought...
Unable to form a decent question to ask those two, his first instinct is to also dive back into where the forest lies and nods back to Mizu with a somewhat critical look. Seriously, if that creepy place is acting as the entrance towards whatever is hidden further down, it's best to confront this entire scenario before things worsen to no end.

When Mizu mentions that Akyan has entered the forest on his own Leeta snorts, clearly annoyed.
- Well, of course! Why wait for us so we can enter the forest as a coordinated force? Much better to go on his own and risk his life stupidly! I just hope he knows what he's doing and that he doesn't end up in trouble. This town doesn't need another body submitted to public display...
The mini monk falls silent after this, realizing that she's perhaps gotten a little bit too angry. She closes her eyes, takes a deep and long breath and exhales, calming down a bit in the process. She then looks again at Mizu:
- Give me a moment.
She runs to Bill and Lilliana and takes whatever food and water they've been able to prepare as they've been speaking to Zale's drinking buddies and distributes it among the party. (OOC: this is more "flavour" than anything. I know we all have rations and food, but I wanted to rp this as a little preparation before entering the forest).
With that, the halfing looks satisfied and ready to head for the dreaded forest. She approaches the StoneDog door, stands next to Mizu with her hands on her hips, nods to the genasi and then looks at the rest of the party:
- Come on! Let's go kick some asses - she stops for a second there, thinking -...or some plants. Well, you know what I mean!
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Rowarin takes a moment to catch his breath, hears the conversation from Zale's associates. As expected, only known by association. When Mizu turns and mentions Akyan has entered the forest alone, a pang of dread hangs in the air as Rowarin remembers what happened to some of his companions from the night before. Hopefully he is of sound mind...Rowarin thinks to himself.
Rowarin receives a portion of the prepared foods from Bill, "Thank you Leeta. And thanks Bill, Lilliana!" nodding his head in appreciation, raising the food slightly gesturing the what the thanks is for.
The party start to leave the tavern, and whilst there is solace to be found here, Rowarin knows he too must venture on to the forest. His urge for understanding is almost as great as his need to resolve his hometown's dilemma. "Let us go forth, comrades. Though I do suggest you attempt to steel your mind to whatever magics are guarding that forest. We don't want a repeat incident from last night..."
As Rowarin begins to walk out, he tries to recall anything from his experience of the magic and if there is anything he can possibly do to safeguard himself and his companions... Arcana:24
Mina frowns as the companions aren't any help. as Leeta gets frustrated to a point of anger, it makes her smile a bit though, she finds she enjoys the company of the mini monk. "Sure, let's head out to the forest, like you said, nows the best time to do it. We can keep an eye open for the drow, but I'm sure he doesn't want the company."
(So I just realized that Soma technically couldn't have communicated that info to Mizu as she is WAY farther than 100ft away. However, I don't wanna retcon that part, so I'll just leave it at that she can't follow Akyan into the woods. Sorry Aroc! Guess Akyan's gonna go forth unsupervised!)
After the seemingly fruitless interaction with Zale's drinking buddies, the party makes the decision to head to the woods. Soma, unable to travel any farther from her master, waits near where the drow entered the treeline.
Once the party makes the trek out to the forest, you notice a small house sitting just a few feet away from the tree line, leaving it just inside the shadow of the forest. As you approach, you begin to notice how severely overgrown everything around it seems to be. Moving closer, this thought vanishes from your mind as you see exactly what kind of vegetation is there, and how far it goes. Coiling, thorny vines have pulled down sections of the picket fence surrounding the abode and have made their way around the building’s walls. A shrub that looks to be a rose has nearly engulfed the patio and part of the roof. The front door stands open, hanging from one hinge. Several vines have made their way into the open doorway.
Based on what you learned earlier, you might guess that this is Angila's house. The most recent victim before Twig. Though this house looks like it's been abandoned for far longer than a few days.
A few yards away from the house, Soma is able to show you where Akyan entered the woods.
The trees there are growing in a strange manner, almost forming a tunnel like structure and there seems to be a semi-natural path leading through the woods. Even in broad daylight, under the tree canopy is as dark as a night with a full moon.
Saying nothing as the rest of his 'team' advance, Rixi, being the socially awkward paladin he is, stays at the back for the entire duration of the walk. The unnatural atmosphere only seems to be meddling with his current thoughts as he clutches his searing chest from time to time, hoping that his internal monster won't reawaken after last night's encounter. Contrary to his current appearance, if there is anything he fears right now, it isn't the ominous void of the forest. It's his own internal monster that he's afraid of, far more than the thought of this Rose girl being behind everything that has happened.
Arriving at the hut, Rixi has immediately gone on full-alert mode, whipping his head in all directions to make sure he doesn't get caught off guard. As usual though, the sight of the overgrown rose bushes under a supposedly dark alleyway disgusts him to no end. The way the trees grow, the path that is shaped before his eyes, it feels just as eerily as his own struggles with his internal thoughts. Even as he goes in closer, he doesn't have much to say to the rest unless if anyone asks him about something.
Not wasting any opportunities though, Rixi burns down the vines carefully to clear any obstructions in the house, especially the front door; Considering the other vegetation nearby plus the wooden structure of the house, he doesn't want to ignite everything all at once. If given the ok-to-go signal, he will enter the hut to inspect the inside, kicking the door back open if it dares to close on him once the vines blocking the way have been removed.

Leeta stands arms crossed a few steps behind Rixian, patiently waiting for the paladin to burn his way into the hut. He seems to be doing perfectly fine on his own, but either way she asks:
- You okay there, Rixian? Tell us if you need assistance, okay?
As she waits, the monk speaks to the rest of the companions.
- Hmmm, this is weird. This hut looks like it has been abandoned far longer than a few days. Could it be that the forest magic has been specially harmful to it since it lies so close to its shadow? - the halfling turns to look at Rowarin - Did you know Angila personally, by any chance? What did she do for a living? I wonder why she choose to live so close to the forest when it had such a bad story behind it.
In any case, if she sees Rixian about to enter the hut, she'll say:
- I'll go with you! But let's check that it is safe to enter beforehand, just in case.
(OOC: Investigation before entering: 16. Would a second roll be needed to investigate upon entering (if it's safe to do so)? If that is the case: 8)
Kulogall walks up beside Rixi and begins judiciously using fire bolt to burn away twigs, vines, kill off remaining overgrowth so that they can enter the cottage. He observes and listens to the talk about Angila, deep in his own thoughts as he tries to piece together the various links in this puzzle.
Calmly burning the vines to the best of his ability, the sudden presence of Kulogall burning alongside him was enough to make him jolt as if an artery clogged suddenly inside his chest. Even as Leeta asks if he's okay, all she receives at first is an awkward, silent beat that lasted for about ten seconds as he remains stationary...
'Daijoubu janai.... (大丈夫 じゃない, I'm not okay...)'
"I'm alright."He finally responds with a robotic tone. No need to rub salt in his own wound. Besides, Leeta want to inspect inside too in case this place appears to be an entire ambush. After all, wouldn't that be what the fox warriors Yuri and Shiji would say too? He nods back and give her the go ahead before he kicks the door open once the vines obscuring the entrance have been fully burnt.

Mizu isn't particularly interested in the hut. Not because he isn't concerned about what happened there, but rather because he has a feeling there is nothing to gain by further investigating it. The longer they wait to enter the forest, the less likely they'll be to find any of the victims alive. However, seems how his other companions are intent on investigating the place, he doesn't object. Instead, he waits as the fire-users defoliate the plants and enter the house. As they do this, he stands between the house and the tunnel in the trees, keeping watch as best he can. He also sends Soma ahead (down the path in the trees), instructing her not to get out of range, and to turn back if the way gets too dangerous for her.
Mina was always impressed with Kulogall's use of fire since he is a water being like herself, but as he and the paladin take care of the plants and some head in to check the cabin, she heads over to Mizu. "What do you think we'll find in the woods? And any direction make sense to you? Looks like there is a path just waiting for us to walk into its trap."
Rowarin follows behind the party, starting to feel angst about going further into the forest. What if the same thing happens again and these folks start losing their marbles? He turns his head and angles it towards his rat companion, whispering "Podrick, keep an eye out. If any of these start acting... weirder... let me know." Podrick whispers back "You got it boss person!" and perches on Rowarins shoulder, looking intently at each individual in turn.
Rixi and Kulogall begin burning away the vines to check on this property. If we weren't told, there is no way we would have known this hut would have been occupied but only a few days past. Though Rowarin understands why these press on in clearing the hut, he does think that it is perhaps not the best use of time as they know they should probably continue onwards through the forest, giving as much daylight as possible. Don't want to be out here in the dark again, thats for sure.
Rowarin will turn his back to the hut and stand to the side of Mizu. "Is your companion sensing anything? I don't want us walking into the same trap as last night, hopefully we can circumvent it this time."
Rowarin will wait here until either something alerts him or the party are ready to move on.

- Come on! Let's go kick some asses - she stops for a second there, thinking - ...or some plants. Well, you know what I mean!

Hopefully he is of sound mind... Rowarin thinks to himself.

"I'm alright." He finally responds with a robotic tone.
