Mayres Sigil (Pronounced May-ris Si-jill) was born in a seaside town centuries ago.
My town didn't have a name, didn't need to. It was too small to catch the fancy of outsiders.
Raised by his mother -- a human of distant fey descent that was known as the the town's resident "witch", but was really nothing more then a herbalist -- Mayres was an outcast his entire childhood. When he reached adolescence, Mayres was taken under his mother's wing as her apprentice in herbology, which would lead to him being summoned by Annabel Lost, the only child and heir of the town's Lord. Annabel rather forcefully said that she and Mayres where to be friends -- Annabel herself isolated and caged by her father's cruel reputation -- and, perhaps becouse of this, or maybe in spite of it, the two did in fact become best friends.
Made with harsh angles, laughing eyes, and a spill of long, black hair, she couldn't have been any older then I.
"You are the witch's boy, are you not?"
"Yes, ma'am."
"Don't call me ma'am, it makes me sound dreadfully old, and besides, we're going to be friends." Her tone brokered no agreement. "Now, come, pickup my dress skirts; we're going to climb out this window."
When they where older they followed what some would have said was the natural progression of their relationship: they fell in love.
"Here." She tossed me something, sunlight flashing of the silver as it sailed through the air, and I caught the object instinctually.
It was an engraved silver ring on a braided silver chain.
It was her ring. Her family ring.
(There's more to my character's backstory, of course, but I can't post it right now. Sorry.)
Backstory: Ander grew up on the streets of a town he never bothered to learn the name of. No one there wanted to help him, and he had no way to travel anywhere else so he taught himself to survive. He stuck to the shadows and stole what he needed. One day he tried to pickpocket from a mysterious visitor but he was spotted. Rather than punish him, the visitor was glad. He belonged to a secretive monastery who trained people with the skills Ander was showing. He was taken to this monastery where he was taught how to use the shadows more to his advantage. His small size made him perfect for quick attacks for defense but he struggled to master some of the more advanced techniques. He was therefore sent out to travel and see if he could achieve more outside the monastery grounds.
This is me. The most important rule is to have fun, I don't care what the books say, they are guidelines not laws. That being said, if anyone wants help regarding the rules or character creation etc (whether I'm in the game or not) I don't mind giving my opinion, but will only do it if asked.
Thanks everyone for your replies so far. Looks like we'll definitely get a decent party together. I'll give it until 1 Nov like I said, mainly because I won't have much time between now and then, but also to give others a chance to express interest.
Good to see you, BlackBear! This got buried in the thread. DM is still accepting applicants until Nov 1st.

Backstory: In the secluded mountain ranges of the bitter North where the wind howls like vengeful spirits there was a tribe of goliaths. Among them was a young goliath named Lukuth Lokar. From a young age Lukuth displayed exceptional strength and courage valued by his tribe. He was revered, and it was believed that he was blessed by the spirits of the mountains. One harsh winter, when the food supplies were dwindling and the tribe faced the threat of starvation, Lukuth took it upon himself to venture into the treacherous wilderness of the mountains. Armed with only a stone axe he set out to find food for his people. A week later he returned to their settlement to see only corpses of his people. They were attacked by a horde of frost giants while they slept. Lukuth vowed he would have revenge and set out into the mountains. He traveled far away from the land of his ancestors. While on his travels he found his way to Neverwinter, there he met Gundrun Rockseeker. Lukuth has stayed in Neverwinter ever since until he was hired to escort a wagon to Phandalin.
Hey i'd love to have a go at this. I've played in two DnD campaigns as a player and have been running my own as DM since last year. I haven't played PbP at all so i'm new to this medium. Full disclosure, i have played through LMoP so i'll be playing a pretty stupid character, hopefully i role enough low ability scores to dump those mental stats.
Name: Groknar
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Class: Barbarian
Race: Half-Orc
Background: Criminal
Abilities: 13141310166Edit: These will work i think!
I'm thinking i might take the background of the Rogue in the Phandelver module, just to make it easier for me to integrate into the adventure. Let me know what you think!
Thank you so much to everyone who expressed an interest and came up with some great characters and even better backstories.
It’s been a hard decision and I hope no-one takes it as a slight on their characters or the work they’ve put in if they haven’t been selected. In the end I have given more weight to new players where I can, whilst trying to balance the party as best as possible. I suspect my inexperience is probably showing and I’ve picked a really awkward bunch of classes to go together! Hopefully not.
I said I wanted to go for a party of four to keep it quite streamlined, but really struggled to pick just four, so I’ve gone for five in the end, hoping that it won’t cause too much slowdown. The party departing Neverwinter for Phandalin will be:
Aeran Dormaris – High Elf Paladin
Alden Shadowclaw – Human Ranger
Astrea Balacluf – Tiefling Fighter
Mayres Sigil – Human Wizard
Lukuth Lokar – Goliath Barbarian
As we get into the game, I would ask my players for the following:
Please try to post at least once a day. We like good narrative that brings the action alive, but if all you’ve got time for is a simple action, I’d rather have that than nothing. Let’s keep the story ticking along, and add in the colour when you have time to do so.
If you know you might not be able to post for a couple of days, please let me know. I will do the same if that applies to me. Of course there will be unforeseen situations and real life comes first, so don’t stress if you’re taken by surprise, just let me know when you can. I promise I won’t kill off your character on day 2 of radio silence!
I am relying on you to know and use your characters skills and attributes. If you think they can do something in particular, let me know. Don’t expect me to know what they can do, because I don’t! (Until I’ve looked it up of course).
If you think there’s a certain rule that applies in a situation and I haven’t mentioned it, please draw my attention to it. There may be a reason I haven’t applied it, but will never be upset with anyone asking the question. I’d rather have that conversation than miss something. I’m learning here too.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or like you can’t keep up, or you’re generally just not enjoying it, please talk to me. I’d rather discuss it and make changes if I can to make it work for all of us than lose people. Ultimately this should be good fun for everyone. You may all bring different things to the party and that’s fantastic. Don’t feel like you should be doing the same as someone else!
I will create a PM group for me and the players for OOC chat. If you’ve got an idea but you’re not sure how to play it out in the thread, put it in there and we can figure it out together. That’s a free chat for anything. I think it’s the best way to stop the thread getting too cluttered with questions and rule clarifications.
Instinctively, I think PvP can be quite fun if it’s agreed by all and done in the right spirit, but that’s probably because I never take myself or my characters too seriously. If you think it would be in character for your character to do something against another party member, let’s discuss it in the PM group and if everyone’s cool with it then we can. If that’s not the party dynamic or anyone’s uncomfortable with it, then I won’t allow it.
I will kick off the campaign tomorrow morning. In the meantime I’ll leave this open for any questions, comments, thoughts, suggestions, or wisdom that might help!
I suspect my inexperience is probably showing and I’ve picked a really awkward bunch of classes to go together! Hopefully not.
The mix looks fine. You have tank/damage/some healing capabilities, as well as a mixture of melee/ranged.
Though picking an unoptimised group wouldn't necessarily be inexperienced, I've played some great games with an atypical balance (such as all bards) and it's interesting trying to make it work as a party.
Is this still open?
16 / 16 / 16 Whether first or last, we're all traveling together.
Yeah. The DM is deciding who's going to be in the Party on Wednesday, so you can still submit your character if you want.
Hope that helps! : )
