Bryn nods, "I understand." He says with a long sigh. "Just don't go getting the rest of the tavern riled up about escaping. I've kept a tenuous peace here, and I'd like to keep it that." He doesn't think on Veronica's question for very long before shaking his head. "Nothing that hasn't already been said. It's like you've heard, there really is no way to prepare for what you might encounter up there."
Veronica nods... she doesn't like this foolhardy plan concocted in literal MINUTES much more than the bartender does. She would much rather stop and let the panicked feelings wear off so that any expedition can be conducted with a clear head.
"Trust me, I have no intention of convincing everyone to get themselves killed," she says. "Hopefully this group of heroes are willing to stop and think for a while if it turns out that they've bitten off more than they can chew... speaking of chewing, please try to save some supper for me, if you don't mind."
Kai takes the wrapped meat and places it in his pack for now, choosing for now to ignore the thinly veiled derision from their fanged friend. "Thanks for the help Bryn. If we find a way out, promise we'll come down and get you all first." A part of him believed the bartender wouldn't leave even if given the option. He understood keeping the peace, but his reluctance to even broach the topic of escape was suspicious to him.
"Up we go,"he says, heading towards the stairs that lead to the second floor. When they get to the top he stops to take a look around for a moment, if there's nothing conspicuous or dangerous looking, he heads for the nearest door to press his ear against it, listening for anything within.
As they walk up the stairs Lori utters a quick chant under her breath, pulling a sheet of light from her staff that envelopes her. With the Mage Armor around her, she feels a fair bit safer walking into the unknown. "Hear anything?" She asks quietly.
"Good luck," Bryn says shortly, adding to Veronica. "I'll save what I can if you're not back before then."
At the top of the stairs you're met with a small common area, the wood floor covered in a bright green rug. To your right is a hall with six doors, three on each side. In front of you, you can see two opens doors, glimpsing what appear to be bath tubs in each of them. Two more doors are to your left, the closest within reaching distance from the top of the stairs. The common area and hall are both lit by sconces, and at the end of the hall you see a window.
Kai: As you settle your ear against the door, you can just barely hear something, a faint bubbling sound.
"Sounds like bubbling. Like the bottom of a waterfall?" Kai says, a confused expression on his face as he pulls away from the door. He puts his hand on the knob, ready to turn it. "Objections?"
Lori looks down the hall, her eyes on the window at the end of it. There was no way it could be that easy...And she had no intention of running off on her own. She turns her attention back to Kai at the door and nods. "Open it. We might get lucky and find the attic on our first try."
You hear wood scraping on the floor as whatever was blocking the door is shoved back. As you open the door fully, you see the wooden armoire that was blocking it taking "steps" by wiggling back and forth. It hobbles to the far wall, settling into what was likely its rightful place.
The bedroom is simply furnished, an unmade double-bed with a wood frame sits in the corner. To your right, there is a door just barely cracked open, which appears to be the source of the bubbling\boiling noise. Through the crack, you can see an occasional multi-colored bubble drift into the bedroom, never bursting as it adds itself to a growing collection on the ceiling.
"Not bad so far...Weird that the furniture can move, maybe don't get too close to the bed. Or the armoire."When they enter the room, Lori's eyes immediately go to the ceiling, looking for a trapdoor leading to the attic. If there isn't one in the room she goes to the cracked door, pushing it open slowly and stepping inside to check there as well.
You push your way into what looks like a simple bathroom. A porcelain claw-footed tub dominates the center of the room, copper pipes running from up from the floor near the head of the tub, rounding over into a faucet. The tub is filled with more of those multi-colored bubbles, which gently float up and around the room, almost filling it. You can feel heat coming off the water as it boils furiously, lapping up against the edges of the tub.
Located directly above, you see a trapdoor with a shiny padlock on it.
Veronica sighs as she looks up at the trap door...
"I can get up there easily enough," she says. "I don't know for sure if I'll be able to open the lock, but if worse comes to worse I can probably crack the door apart to make an opening for our little adventure... does anyone have a strong rope or something that I can tie off for the rest of you to climb if I have to resort brute-force methods of entry?"
Kai approaches the bubbling tub, slinging his pack over his shoulder to dig through it. "I have...rope, a piton, and a hammer." He says, taking each thing out and handing it over to Veronica as he says the name.
"Do you need me to boost you up there, or...?"He asks, unsure of what she meant by "get up there easily enough."
Veronica takes the climbing supplies as they are handed to her... she can't help but giggle when asked if she needs help to reach the trap door.
"Oh, no thank you, I can manage... just watch and be amazed," she says with a wink...
And with that, she steps up to the wall and simply begins walking up the vertical surface, then onto the ceiling, before crouching onto all fours when she reaches the locked trap door. She begins poking around to figure out the best way to open open it.
You all watch as Veronica hangs effortlessly from the ceiling, crouched around the trapdoor as if it were on the floor.
Veronica: You give the padlock an experimental tug. Knock on the wooden trapdoor to see how thick it is. Experiment with getting your fingers in the cracks along the door. After playing with it for a minute or so, you conclude that without a key or lockpicks it would be easiest to just force the door open rather than directly trying to break the padlock. The cracks that outline the door are big enough to fit something in for leverage if you have such a tool.

Veronica, ever the cautious vampire, pauses to listen as well.

Veronica:
You're able to hear the bubbling sound more clearly. It almost sounds like...Boiling water?
"Sounds like bubbling. Like the bottom of a waterfall?" Kai says, a confused expression on his face as he pulls away from the door. He puts his hand on the knob, ready to turn it. "Objections?"
Veronica thinks for a moment.
"Possibly... but it actually sounds more like something is boiling to me," the vampire says.

"Be ready." Kai twists the nob and pushes open the door (or tries to, if it is unlocked).
As you push against the door, you find that it's unlocked, but something appears to have jammed it shut.
You can perform a strength check to try and open it. Additionally, roll a d6.
"Of course, it's jammed shut." Kai mutters. Bracing his shoulder against the door, he twists the knob again and pushes as hard as he can.
