A prominent mystic told of visions of gold in these plains, and so a few brave settlers took off hoping to strike rich. So far all they have found are goblinoids, rabid tribesmen, and foul beasts of all sorts of descriptions. Nonetheless, a small economy has developed around supplying the gold seekers, and once the roots of civilization take hold it's hard to pull them out.
You are a traveler fresh off of a riverboat in the town of Raven's Roost. Your reasons for arriving here are your own, perhaps you seek gold, or maybe you wish to join one of the many bands of beast hunters, or perhaps you are yet another outlaw looking to run wild in the practically lawless plains, but I digress. You begin to make your way to the nearest tavern, a small establishment located just off the docks, but you are stopped dead in your tracks by a few local men spreading their arms out, blocking your way.
"Don't take to the streets just yet, friends. Something's about to go down," one of them says.
You notice the road in front of the tavern is clear of all traffic but two men staring one another down, with their hands resting on hand crossbows at their hips, and one man in the center set back a little ways. He raises his hand and gives each man a nervous look.
How to Apply

Simply state your character's name, race, class, and give me a bit of background on them as well as their reasons for arriving in Raven's Roost.

Fanric Sternward a human noble, and wizard has come to Raven's Roost to bring scholarly knowledge, and maybe a bit of "law and order" to this rough and tumble town. Fanric is a young and friendly man but the 5th in line of his family estates so he learned the wizarding arts to give himself more power and honor. Being good at it and hearing of these gold filled planes Fanric saw an opportunity and he took it with both hands taking the first boat to Raven's Roost.
Gavin Hearson, human fighter (archer). He hails from from a wandering clan of nomads. While they were in a town upriver, he heard of the chance of finding gold near to Raven's Roost. Taking his trusted weapons with him, he arranged for passage on a riverboat and disembarked with a vision of getting enough gold to ensure that his clan would be able to thrive rather than merely exist. Unfortunately, that plan was derailed when the men on the dock stopped him.
Dekket Karkrow is a tiefling that is as fast with his tongue as he is with his sword. Silver-tongued rogue he had found himself in more troubles that his wits and smile can manage and had leave the city, fleeing from the influence and the debts he had acquired with a local thief boss named Half-Scar. Going through the plains he has arrived to Raven’s Root hearing the rumors of gold and riches.
Complete backstory:
Raised in the streets of the capital, abandoned by his mother when he was only three years old, a prostitue at the docks who was used as a token of gratitude of an archwizard to a great demon in one deal, he was raised by the street. He didn't know the most tender side of life, going from hospice ot hospice due to his heritage. If there was something missing, he was to blame. If there was a fight, he was to blame, even if he was the one with a closed eye and a lip broken. That continued until he was 8 years old, and he finally ended up at little hospice ran by a Ilmater's old cleric. This old man showed him tenderness, and cared about him and the 15 more orphans, most of them humans but there was a couple of half-orcs there too, as if they were his own children. That was the best year of his childhood. Finally a merchant wanted to expand his possesions and bought the property of the hospice. He still remember the night that the merchant's guards came and took the old man by force. The heart of the poor old man couldn't take it and died in the mud of the street. Seeing that merchant laughing and taking what he wanted just because he had the money to do it was it. From that point on he swore to himself that someday he will have even more money than that merchant. He spent the next years stealing and conning what he could. He tried to help the other orphans, but little by little they all moved away or died due to illness or fights that went south. The search of the city guard for thieves and his necesity to move drove him to the docks, where he found jobs at some ships from time to time wich helped him to dissapear when things went to hot. There he found, finally, a place as a member of a pirate crew aboard a little but fast ship called "The Weeping Lady". They operated from the hidden port the capital and sold their exploits at the vibrant docks of the city. It was there that he met and befriend Garrick "boots" Franwise, another urchin like him that had managed to be one of the harbor masters of the port, helping Dekket to sell the things he “obtained” and sharing the profits. During a pirate incursion, Dekket saved Garrick from become a slave and since then they had kept a healthy and profitable relationship. Unfortunately, one night after a particulary succesful ride aboard the Lady, he gambled too much for his own good. And he lost. With a debt higher that he could pay to one of the most hideous gang leaders at the ports, a goliath called "Half-Scar", he decided that a change of air would be good for his health and leaved the city in search of fortune. Enough to pay his debt and enough to leave this life once and for all.
Gale is a Half-Orc Cleric of Tempest. Born on the alleged pirate ship, "The Vindicator" he was one of the few survivors when the ship sank in a terrible storm. While struggling beneath the waves, he heard the call of the storms and his life was spared. Washing ashore, he began a new life in service of the thunderous god who's name he has yet to learn. Among the lighting and thunder, Gale has heard of a great storm brewing in the plains.
Graceela Frostwind, human barbarian, comes from frigid cold lands where her tribe, the Frostwind Clan ruled over by her father, wanders from hunting ground to hunting ground, seeking nourishment and shelter and dominance through might. She is the youngest child of the chief of the tribe and, as such, has little to no chance of gaining the position of chief herself with four elder brothers in line ahead of her. This irks her as, despite the fact that she can best any of her elder brothers in tests of strength and martial skill, it is her gender and her age that keep her from being considered for the position.
In order to earn her way into glory and the position she believes is rightfully hers based on merit, she has left the tribe to win glory and riches that she may bring back to them to show that she is the rightful heir to the position of chief of the Frostwind Clan. With the promise of riches and tales of glory left behind and her meager belongings and bit of gold she had taken with her, she traveled from the frigid lands of her birth and further into the warmer lands where "civilization" has taken root.
Having no taste for "civilized" people, she traveled past the more populated and larger cities. Her travel, eventually, took her to the town of Raven's Roost where the promise of gold to be taken, beasts to be slain and wild lands to be tamed have drawn her. Surely here, where the land is still wild and the people wilder, she will be able to earn glory and fame. Surely here, she will prove her worth.
Cade Crimson, aka: Caton Christian, aka: Chandra Crane (born: Charlton Caddington) Human, Bard, Chaotic Neutral, Agnostic Background Criminal CC as he is often called is and has been a bit of everything. His family were long servants of the noble classes. He was sent to a Bard's Academy to learn to be an entertainer. His antics saw him expelled and he turned to small time crime and con games. Though he never finished school he was trained by his lifestyle as a con artist, hustler, street performer, gambler and joker. He is an alcoholic and delights in offenses and insults. He's in Ravens Roost because he hasn't burnt any bridges here. He has come to the frontier seeking new opportunities, misadventure, and good times! Dekket goes to the side of the street and climbs to a barrel to get a better look of what’s going on.
He taps on the shoulder of one of the bystanders.
”Excuse me “ he says smiling at him and then looking at the two men who are looking into each other eye’s. “What’s going on there?” For him it was pretty obvious what they were trying to do, but why is what he wanted to know.
The barbarian woman, dressed in leather wraps, boots and cloak, stood and waited as she was warned to by the bystander that spoke of something afoot. She looked to the man with narrowed eyes and a frown and then over to the scene playing before her in the middle of the street. She saw the two men at the ready, their hands near weapons, and the tension between them was something she was familiar with. The tension of violence but a moment away.
"Hm. If they are going to battle, they should at least do it in more entertaining a way with real weapons.", she spoke out, her voice a husky contralto as she shrugged her shoulders, causing the great maul slung across her back to shift, as though making an example of what she thought a "real" weapon was.
Gavin stood uneasily by the men preventing his progress towards his goal. His eyes flitted over the scene, well aware of the weight of his own bow and quiver on his back.
"Are they - are they dueling in the streets? With crossbows?" he says a bit quietly to the nearest of the local men just as the leather-clad woman near him passed her judgement on their weapons choice. His own leather armor was definitely well-loved and well-used, and the feeling of his father's scimitar on his hip a constant reminder of his purpose here.
Cade Crimson begins to cheer loudly, stalking about, encouraging the other bystanders... "SHOWDOWN! SHOWDOWN! SHOWDOWN!" He stretches and looks around. "Hey where's the vendors!? We need refreshments for the show! Look at'em the one on the left is shaking! LET'S GO RIGHTY! LET'S GO RIGHTY!"

Graceela looked over briefly to the man calling out loudly about the impending fight, making a spectacle of himself in that moment. She glanced his way for but a moment as another man who looked soft to the barbarian woman's eyes seemed to take offense to the first man's making light of the scene before them. Then she looked away, folding her arms across her chest to watch what would happen. She didn't care much for making spectacles of such things. Bloodshed had it's place and legitimate duels between people often had observers to make sure the fight was fought fairly and to bring honor to the winner, but cheering and raucousness were for after the battle was done. Not before.
Hearing the one shouting about what was going to happen and he being silenced by the other man made Dekket lose his attention from the two dueling at the main street.
"Calm down man " he says, still up the barrel for good sighting " They are going to kill each other... hope is for good reason... and not for being yelling in the streets... "
"I don't think this is serious at all friend! They way I see it, I don't think either one of these tossers has the stones to shoot!CC pulls back his black cloak to show his own handheld crossbow. "I might even call next on the winner!'
"Can't say I really know. All I know is a bunch of men came out of the tavern and cleared the street and now these two are staring each other down."
Another nearby man looks at Gavin
"It would seem so. They came out of the tavern with a bunch of men who cleared the road for em."
As Cade begins to cheer the majority of the crowd picks up with him. Roaring at the pair squaring off in front of them. The two men don't break their gaze despite the uproar from the crowd.
The man in the center's hand drops, and the two men draw.
The one on the right is blindingly quick and fires both crossbows before the left man fully draws. The bolts sail through the air and connect with both of his opponent's crossbows, splitting them into pieces and knocking them out of his hands. He throws the right crossbow into the air and swiftly reloads the left with his now free hand before snatching the right crossbow out of the air and tossing the left one, reloading his right crossbow, and grabbing his left crossbow. He has both crossbows aimed and ready to take another pair of shots within the blink of an eye. The man on the left takes off and dashes down an alley. The crowd cheers and the remaining duelist holsters his crossbows.
“Perhaps you were right and this is just a show” says the tiefling. He sits on the barrel waiting for the crowd to go away and be able to go to the tavern, leaning against the wall.
