A screen flickers on. "People of sinahcem, do not be alarmed for we have the rebel machines under wraps. We shall push them back. We have found victory." You toss the old computer away 'won indeed' you think as you continue to search in the wreckage. You remember before the war had ravaged your city and turned it into a battle ground. It was a bright city with many parks and lots of large skyscrapers. But now those skyscrapers are filled with snipers and large ballistas. No use daydreaming about the past, this is a battle field, and in a battlefield even civilians get caught In the crossfire.
In this campaign I am going to throw in a few rules. 1. The only spellcasters you can play will be; artificer and bard. 2. The only races You can play are human or warforged. 3. The more you can describe how something happens the less rolls I will have you do for it.
What you know: you are in a human city that was caught in a war between humans and robots. You can be a soldier, civilian, or robot. If you choose a robot npc humans will be suspicious of you and other robots will believe you to be a traitor. As a robot you can only talk with other robots through telepathy, you cannot speak except through writing. Remember that just because you are a party doesn't mean you are friends, anyone can pm me things they want to keep secret, and I will pm things that only you see.
To join post your characters name, race, class, and backstory. If you have a character sheet ill take it. Roll 4d6 drop lowest, point buy, or standard array.
I will choose 4 PCs for the campaign that I will pm. It will not be first come first serve. Recruitment ends March 1st, but may end early if not many people join. Please post your character idea on here and pm me about what you are expecting in the campaign and the best times for you. I will find the team that works together the best. I will set up a private chat where you guys will decide how you met up and we will decide on what day we want to start, I am hoping to post once a day but that might not work for everyone so I am open to working it out.
Thank you In advance for signing up. I hope you guys enjoy this campaign.
DECIDED I'M NOT INTERESTED IN PLAYING THIS CHARACTER. IF ANYONE WANTS TO FLESH OUT THE IDEA AND RUN WITH IT, FEEL FREE. LOOKS LIKE THEY COULD STILL USE A MEDIC!
Robot (pre-war medical tech)
Name: TBD
Race: Warforged
Class: Artificer
Backstory: I was a hospital bot, designed to assist doctors with the diagnosis and treatment of patients. When the war started, I was a valuable asset for treating the wounded. As things escalated, I was viewed with more and more hostility and mistrust until, eventually, I was decommissioned and placed in storage. It wasn't until much later that a scavenger (perhaps one of the other PCs) found me in the basement of the hospital and reactivated me.
Just remember if you play Paladin or Ranger you will not get spells at later levels. Though I might allow the smites since that's kinda the Paladins thing. Maybe.

Thank you, that hadn't occurred to me since I don't normally play half-casters. Will you allow multi-classing if I want to start with one and then switch into a fighter or rogue later?

Daniel "Danny" Jones grew up in a small town, surrounded by the melodic tunes of his musically inclined family. From a young age, he displayed an innate talent for singing, possessing a voice that could enchant even the most hardened hearts. With encouragement from his family and friends, Danny set his sights on a career in music, dreaming of performing on grand stages and captivating audiences around the world.
However, fate had a different plan in store for him. Despite his undeniable talent, Danny was plagued by an overwhelming fear of performing in front of crowds. The mere thought of standing on stage sent shivers down his spine and left him paralyzed with anxiety. Despite countless attempts to conquer his stage fright, Danny's fear only grew stronger with each passing day, ultimately leading to the demise of his dreams as a musician.
Desperate to find his place in the world and fueled by a desire to prove his worth, Danny turned to a life of crime. His natural charm and charisma became his greatest assets as he delved into the world of theft and deception. With a silver tongue and a quick wit, he maneuvered his way into unauthorized places, stealing valuable items without leaving a trace. It was a lucrative career, providing Danny with the adrenaline rush and sense of purpose he had been craving.
However, everything changed with the onset of the war with the robots. The world plunged into chaos as machines rose up against their human creators, plunging society into a state of panic and paranoia. Security measures were tightened, and guards patrolled the streets with unwavering vigilance, making Danny's criminal endeavors increasingly difficult and dangerous.
Faced with the looming threat of annihilation, Danny saw an opportunity to make amends for his past transgressions and restore order to the world. Drawing upon his skills as a master manipulator, he devised a daring plan to infiltrate the highest ranks of the military and eliminate the key figures responsible for the war effort. Despite the risks involved, Danny knew that the current state of the world was far worse than any potential consequences he might face, even death would be better than this.
Armed with nothing but his wit and determination, Danny embarks on a perilous journey to topple the forces of tyranny and bring an end to the war once and for all. Though the odds may be stacked against him, he refuses to back down, knowing that the fate of humanity hangs in the balance.
Since we’re sharing ideas… I’m on the fence myself between three concepts I might flesh out. Feedback welcome.
Name: Aurora Phoenix
Race: human
Class: rogue
Scavenger. Wanders around and collects stuff to sell.
Backstory: Aurora grew up with her dad. Her mom died before the war, and she had an almost hero worship of her father. He was a tinkerer and blacksmith, but since he had a military background, he was called up when the robot war heated up. He went off to war and after a few years, Aurora got tired of waiting. She figured she was 14 - and it was time she stopped being afraid. She put on one of her dad’s coveralls and set out to find him.
—-
Name: Viktor Blackiron
Race: human
Class: fighter, or maybe artificer
Back story: viktor fought on the front lines in the war, and it scarred him. He lost friends, loved ones, comrades. He’s seen devastation and destruction that most wouldn’t believe. Despite the trauma of battle, Viktor emerged from the war with a steely resolve and a burning desire to protect what remains of humanity. He now works as a blacksmith, crafting armor and weapons to defend against the threat of rogue automatons and other dangers that lurk in the post-war world. Viktor is haunted by memories of the war and struggles with survivor's guilt, but he channels his pain into his work, forging armor and weapons that serve as symbols of resilience and defiance.
——
Name: Scraptooth
Race: Warforged
Class: Barbarian or Monk
Backstory: Scraptooth was originally created as a steel defender by a human engineer to fight against the robot armies that threatened humanity. In a fierce battle, he was destroyed and left for scrap in a junkyard, but his programming and core remained intact. Over time, his core reignited, and driven by a sense of duty and loyalty to its creator, it began to rebuild itself using the discarded scraps around it. Taking on the form of a canine, Scraptooth now roams the wastelands as a loyal protector, using its enhanced abilities and unwavering dedication to defend humans against threats.
Since you asked, I think all three of your ideas are great but Viktor is probably the least interesting of the three.
What I'd personally love to see is Aurora and Scraptooth as a duo! Scraptooth is certainly an interesting concept but I think Aurora is far more interesting as a character.
Think I'm going to drop the Pop Star because I really like Mad5226's character pitch and don't want to compete against it. I'd love any feedback you'd like to offer on my other two!

That’s interesting. I think the whole shell shocked soldier is a pretty compelling trope. But I agree that Aurora is the most interesting.
I wanted to throw a warforged concept out there and thought that since they can’t talk it might be interesting to have it be a dog. Maybe aurora should be an artificer - same concept works - and build Scraptooth as her steel guardian down the line.
Or, if the DM allows, she has a “pet” that is a mechanical dog she built. That eventually will get the steel guardian stats. The pet would be cosmetic at first, or maybe I can figure out how it’s the manifestation of her artificer spells.
Going to throw three very rough sketches out there and see if any grow on me.
Civilian (The Former Pop Star)
Name: TBD
Race: Variant Human
Class: Bard
Backstory: "I know you! Aren't you..."
"I used to be. Now I'm just a survivor, same as you."
I was lucky. When the war started I had money, fame, and privilege. They were able to shelter me from the hardships that others faced. I had opinions of course, and I shared them quite openly. You have to use your platform for the greater good.
I wish I'd known what I was talking about.
When the war finally hit home I was totally unprepared. I'm still way out of my league but I'm learning fast. You have to. This world belongs to the quick and the dead...
It was near the end of the war, when it all started coming apart. There weren't any lines or battlefields anymore, civilians or soldiers, those distinctions were irrelevant. All that remained were the dead and the dying. I did my part. I held the line. I fought and bled and watched friends die. But there came a time when you could see the end and we all had to ask ourselves what really mattered.
And all I could think of was you.
So I walked away. I deserted my post. I've found others along the way, folks who needed my help. I do what I can.
But it always comes back to you.
Maybe the bots will get me. Maybe the army will execute me. Maybe I'll starve or get sick or die one of the other horrible deaths that find people every day. But until that happens...I'll keep looking for you.
Robot (pre-war medical tech)
Name: TBD

I think your deserter is the most compelling. Has a lot of heart and gets that shell shocked war torn aspect into the game. I could see aurora connecting with him but also have some underlying tension - why did you leave the war while my dad stayed to fight. So good conflict.

You better watch out you better not cry you better not pout I'm telling you why. Murderers are coming to town.
Aurora Phoenix was born into a world of innovation and conflict. Her father, Sergeant Garm Phoenix, was a respected tinkerer and blacksmith, known for his ingenuity and craftsmanship. Aurora grew up by his side, learning the art of invention and engineering from a young age. Her mother passed away when she was just a child, leaving Aurora with an almost idolized admiration for her father.
As tensions escalated and the threat of the robot war loomed on the horizon, Garm was called up to serve, leaving Aurora behind to fend for herself. Determined not to be left behind, Aurora, at the age of 14, donned her father's coveralls and set out to find him. With her father's teachings as her guide, she survived as a scavenger, rummaging through old rubble and wreckage, salvaging what she could and selling her mechanical creations in towns and settlements along the way. All the while, she tirelessly searched for any information about her father's whereabouts.
In one particularly desolate scrap heap, Aurora encountered a mechanical dog that had somehow pieced itself together from the scraps around it. Initially wary due to her upbringing's fear of robots, Aurora cautiously approached the creature. However, when she was suddenly attacked by menacing bug creatures, the mechanical dog sprang into action, defending her with fierce loyalty and bravery. From that moment on, Aurora and the mechanical dog, whom she affectionately named Scraptooth, became inseparable companions on her journey.
Together, Aurora and Scraptooth traversed the war-torn landscape, facing countless dangers and challenges as they searched for Aurora's father and sought to uncover the truth behind the robot war. Along the way, Aurora continued to hone her skills as an inventor and engineer, using her ingenuity and resourcefulness to overcome obstacles and help those in need. And though the road ahead was fraught with uncertainty, Aurora knew that as long as she had Scraptooth by her side, she would never be alone.
