During your time in Phlan, you've learned much about the town's rich and mysterious history. It seems that every corner you turn, you stumble upon a piece of Old Phlan: A crumbled foundation that was never rebuilt, old overgrown footpaths that lead to markets that no longer exist. One piece of that history is ingrained into every citizen of Phlan, it seems, and you've heard it reiterated so frequently that it has become entrenched in your mind as well:
Shortly after the Zhentarim liberated and assumed control of Old Phlan, a pact was enacted between the town and the dark fey of the Quivering Forest to the north. In exchange for forbidding travel and logging in the forest, the fey pledged to protect Phlan. The fey would later honor their part of the bargain and spare the town from destruction at the hand of the Netherese; a fate that the nearby Zhentil Keep and the Citadel of the Raven were less successful at avoiding.
The pact is taken very seriously by those that live among the rich and fertile lands along the Stojanow River. In response to the dangers inherent in scratching out a living beyond the protective walls of Phlan, the farmers built fortified hamlets at strategic locations along the river, tiny communities where they can bring their grain for sale and transport, and shelter during times of strife. Many of these farmers make the short journey to the markets of Phlan to sell crops and other artisan's good. It is in one of these markets that the party finds itself in this morning, where Sylyra and Uragum run into a familiar face.
"Oh my stars! There's some faces I'll never forget," a woman working a nearby stall exclaims. The woman is middle-aged, with light brown hair loosely held back in a bun. Though worry lines seem permanently etched into her face, her spirits have obviously improved since you saw her last. She looks as if she's about to rush in for a hug, but pulls herself back and extends a calmer handshake. "Millivent Moss," she says. "You may not remember me, but you rescued my family from those goblins. Gosh, what has it been now, three months?" As if she's just now noticing the others alongside Sylyra and Uragum, she gives a quick nod in Auriel, Hex, and Carl's direction before coughing nervously.
Our Party:
Auriel Fen'hareth: Eladrin Paladin (Oath of Devotion) Carlthuzad Bigtoe: Mountain Dwarf Warlock (The Fiend) Hex: Tiefling Ranger (Hunter) Sylyra Wasanthi: Wood Elf Druid (Circle of the Shepherd) Uragum: Goliath Wizard (War Magic)
Auriel had been in a good mood all morning. He was happy to leave the city and the daily duties behind for a while and just walk and chat with his friends as they made their way through the market.
But at that precise moment he also felt a little uneasy. This place was so close to the Forest, and there inside was the place where he had been living the last months, up until meeting the party in the marsh. He tried to focus into what was happening around him, but found himself glancing at the border of the forest whenever it appeared into view, knowing that something in there was calling to him.
When Millivent Moss approached Sylyra and Uragum, the paladin looked curiously, bowed slightly and smiled in response to her nod. Inmediately afterwards he glanced Hex with a questioning look. Didn't that woman know the tiefling too? The Autumn red-haired eladrin had defintely thought these three knew each othe for longer than three months.
In any case, he just waited in silence to see how the situation developed.
As the group leaves the Laughing Goblin, Auriel isn't the only elf light on his feet. Tall and thin, the blonde-headed and copper-skinned Sylyra marches along looking bright and cheerful. He's dressed in immaculate leathers carved with vines and other plants. Over that, he wears a green hooded half cloak. In one hand, he carries a staff as tall as he, made of blond wood, and decorated as his armor is with vines and other plants. On one end is attached a leather thong with a sprig of mistletoe. On his opposite shoulder is perched a raven Sylyra calls Morisúrë. The black feathered head turns and tilts as the party moves through the market. She occasionally croaks something that causes Sylyra to chuckle.
When stopped and addressed by Millivent Moss, Sylyra's countenance darkens considerably. Here was one more reminder of friends who had abandoned him. But he recovers and smiles again, looking down his beautiful nose at the woman. "Yes," he says, acknowledging her claims. "And how are they?" he asks, only vaguely remembering the woman's husband and the goblins they had to fight to rescue him.
Head held high, Uragum moved with the others with a solid sense of confidence he had lacked before their last outing. Some allegations of cheating had arisen but the gossip had seemed to die down a bit and he had a strong showing himself. The high from the victory was starting to fade and his mind was starting to shift to the next score. He was lost in his own thoughts when they had abruptly stopped. He blinked and quickly took in his bearings as the woman began to talk. He was at a loss of placing her name or her face but he did recall the rescue and goblins. "Yes, nasty business that was..." he muttered with a nod while Sylyra inquired about her family.
"They're good," she says, before correcting herself, "Well...not great, but they're all still living thanks to you."
"How is...business?" she asks, seeming unsure of the phrasing. "Have you been busy rescuing families from goblin kidnappings? I assume adventurers like yourselves have heard what's going on in Kabel's Hill. It's all anyone on the farms wants to talk about anymore, it seems."
The paladin still says nothing, but knowing only what he has just heard he sure is interested as to why this woman speaks of business in such a manner. He cocks his head a little while looking from Millivent to Uragum and Sylyra. What had these two been up to for the woman to speak this way? Just rescuing families, mmm? (OOC: can an insight be rolled here? 17)
He shows even more interest when Millivent mentions that something is happening in Kabel's Hill. Why does that sound like trouble...?
Carl has moved beyond his troubled nights of drinking and oversharing, he’s practiced his spells in his room, and he’s ready to move forward and ever onward towards his path of redemption. Or so he thinks. He’s not quite sure where that leads, but he feels that he has the best odds of succeeding in whatever comes next with the company that he’s with. He walks beside Auriel, thinking his thoughts and somewhat distracted when they are approached by Millivent Moss. He listens to the reintroductions, gives a friendly nod and at first, initially staying quiet as this plays out. After he hears about recent adventures involving goblins, he starts to shift his weight, side to side, the image of the pupil who might know the answer, trying to gain the attention of the teacher.
He butts in, saying “Not goblins, but lizardfolk. Been savin people from lizardfolk, aye. Well, these good folk. I’m just helpin, somewhat. What is going on in Kabel Hill, Ms. Moss?”
Auriel turns his attention to the dwarf, nudges him and says:
- No, you're not "just helping", Carl. And yes, I'm going to correct you whenever you say such things. - he says firmly, but still gently. The paladin is intent on lifting Carlthuzad from the mud he seems to be wallowing in.
As the dwarf has begun addressing Millivent, the eladrin decides to follow and do the same:
- Nice to meet you. My name is Auriel, - he says in his usual autumnal polite and friendly manners- and as my friend here says we'd like to know what is going on there. Can you tell us more, please?
OOC: This is the first the party is hearing about Kabel's Hill.
For Auriel:
You can tell that her "business" phrasing comes from a lack of knowledge about adventuring, and she doesn't seem to be hinting at anything extra. She was making conversation with Sylyra but wasn't sure how to phrase what she was asking.
Millivent's eyes widen at the mention of lizardfolk. "Oh, I'd heard about that! Nasty business, those kidnappings. We were grateful to have farms away from the marsh, that's for certain," she says.
"Though, seems we have our own issues as well. I guess it was about a month or so ago now, a woodworker in Kabel's Hill disappeared. Nobody thought much of it at first, until someone checked out his home. He had a map leading deep into the Quivering Forest apparently, and that was enough to set folks to worrying, for sure. On my last visit there were quite the lively discussions about whether to send folks after him and risk angering the fey, or just hope he never went in there in the first place."
As if only just thinking through the possible repercussions of the situation, she shivers. "I suppose that could get real bad. One person wandering into the Quivering Forest would be cause for concern as it is, but a woodworker at that? That could be a right quick way to get on the forest's bad side," she says. "Now add onto that a bunch of others giving chase? Well, I just hope they make the right decision."
Auriel listents atentively to Millivent. At the mention of the disappearance and the map leading to the Quivering Forest his initial smiling and open demeanor turns to a more serious one. And when he hears that more people could be considering going after the missing man, and a woodcutter at that, an "Istennen!" escapes his lips.
"Gods above!"
When Millivent finishes talking, the paladin's expression is somber.
- That's ... disturbing. To put it mildly. - He glances the others and arches his eyebrows slightly as he says this, as a show that he backs the gravity of Millivent's words. But, at the same time, it looks like he doesn't want to completely show how deeply concerning all this is. A way to try to keep calm, perhaps? - And when was your last visit? I take it that not long ago. If that man disappeared a month ago, I can imagine his neighbours are too restless already.
The eladrin falls silent after this. Not only because he wants to check the party's reactions to all this, but also because he's considering what he wants to do. Or, more like, what he can do. He sure wants to prevent these people from doing something they will regret. In fact, he's already shifted his weight from one leg to the other, as if he would start walking towards Kabel's Hill right away. But what if they manage to stop these people from entering the Forest? What's the next step towards finding the missing woodcutter?
Auriel's mind returned to the letter he sent to Serelis a few days ago, wondering if the ranger would have already received it. It looked like the paladin wasn't going to need his response in the shape of a letter.
Sylyra's head jerks toward Auriel in response to his exclamation. The druid had heard that the forest is off limits, but perhaps he hadn't realized just how dangerous an infraction would be. Yet, Auriel appears to know. The wood elf narrows his eyes as he scrutinizes the eladrin once again. There was something here, and Sylyra is very curious to hear the whole story. But, first things first.
He turns back to look pleasantly at the woman. "Is there a reward for finding this missing woodcutter?"
Now it is Auriel's head that jerks towards Sylyra:
- Isn't keeping the Pact alive reward enough? Not to mention the act itself of helping find someone who might be in grave danger.
The eladrin frowned, mainly at himself. He had wanted to wait for all the companions to share their view on the matter, and there he went ... chiming in at the first response. He sighed and rubbed his temples.
Hex leans back on one leg and crosses her arms as Millivent tells them what had happened at Kabel Hill, a frown forming on her brow. She seems to realise the situation is bad, especially after Auriel's exclamation.
She glances at the paladin as he scolds Sylyra. "He does have a bit of a point, even if its not the first thing I would've asked. There should be at least a little bit of compensation considering the danger we'd be putting ourselves through. We'd risk breaking the Pact just by going in to stop the Pact from breaking," she says with a slight shrug. "Not that the lack of compensation would turn me off. Just... where would we even begin to try and find him?"
She turns her attention back to Millivent. "Did they say where or what exactly his map was leading to?"
Sylyra rolls his eyes at Auriel and then chuffs at Hex. "We're going to get nowhere asking for secondhand information." He looks at Millivent. "If we can secure the promise of some kind of compensation," he looks back at Hex, "it would do us better to go to Kabel's Hill ourselves."
"We'd risk breaking the Pact just by going in to stop the Pact from breaking"
"Just... where would we even begin to try and find him?"
- We don't know that yet. If we end up not needing to enter the Forest, just approaching it, no harm will be done - Auriel replies to Hex's mention of the risk. Then stops to consider for a couple of seconds before continuing - I ... know of someone that might help. If we could find him where he usually resides, at the border of the forest, that might be enough. Perhaps he can take it from there. - The eladrin is unsure of this last sentence, but it could be worth the shot - But yes, - he adds, eyeing Sylyra - getting more information ourselves in Kabel's Hill prior to that will be useful.
The paladin says nothing else regarding the compensation. Even though he disliked that Sylyra had adressed that matter the way he did, Hex was right in that the druid had a point. Hells, even he himself could really use any compensation. Leaving the matter of what will the party do if no compensation can be secured at all, Auriel waits for Millivent's answer.
"Oh, certainly don't allow me to speak on their behalf," Millvent says. "I only visit to sell grains and goods. It's only a day and a half away though, up north. I'm sure the folk there'd be happy to pay folks like yourself to help out."
"Did they say where or what exactly his map was leading to?"
"I don't know the specifics, sorry. I'm sure the folks at Kabel's Hill would be happy to answer though. This had them all in a tizzy," she answers Hex.
"Hmm, well I don't know that's one I can answer," Millivent says. "Kabel's Hill is more of a stopping point on the way to other places than it is a town proper. I'm sure any of the locals or shopkeepers could point you in the right direction."
