I’ve been noodling on the idea of 5e as a pretty solid platform regardless of genre. I think if you can strip away the lore and just look at the mechanics, it’s a system that can do a lot more than fantasy.
I know there are other specialized systems that are designed for different genres (and maybe do them better). I’ve played a lot of them. But the idea here is to take the popularity of 5e and see how we can stretch the rules.
So my idea is to do a superhero game.
Step 1 would be to gather a few like-minded visionaries.
Step 2 is to do a bit of Microscope to flesh out the world and the tone. I have some ideas for a post WWII setting but would want to work through all of that.
Step 3 will be working on building characters - motivations, personalities, etc.
Step 4 will be fleshing out the stats using the system with as few mechanical changes as possible. In this step we will likely find places where we need to make some custom stuff, but I’m hoping we keep that to a minimum.
If you’re interested in joining me, here’s what I need:
Tell me about your interest level in superheroes. Do you read comics? Watch cartoons? Follow the plethora of superhero movies? Let me know what you like and why?
What superhero rpgs have you played? What’s your favorite? Why do you like it? What don’t you like?
Who’s your favorite superhero and why?
What do you like and dislike about play by post games?
Once we get started, I’ll setup a discord server. I’d expect daily interaction, but we would be asynchronous.

playing Jin Wei, human (Kara-tur) way of the Four Elements Monk in the Princes of the Apocalypse
1. I have no idea the level, but it might not be high. I've read comics, but more into manga. If going by superheroes, I barely remember most, but the ones that stuck with me to this day are based on superheroes. It's Adventurer Time and Danny Phantom.
2. None, sadly. So this will be the first one.
3. Danny Phantom, mainly because he is a kid who clearly didn't know most of the time what to do but knew that he wanted to help out even when most of the people are against him.
4. I don't need to worry about schedule and don't need to fake my voice to match my PCs. The number 1 thing I hate about the play-by-post games is lots of players decide to drop it without a word for whatever reason, making the campaign come to a halt for a while before it's completely abandoned by everyone.
PM me the invite for discord if you decide to include me.
1) I was a big fan of mainstream comics, as well as comic book based shows and movies, in the 90s and drifted off into some of the more obscure (and frequently short-lived) titles in the early 2000s. After that, I lost interest until the MCU introduced Captain America. Phase II of the MCU renewed my interest in the characters and stories, I watched about half of the Phase III movies, and I followed a couple of the Disney+ shows. I also followed the early years of the Arrowverse.
2) I've played Marvel Superheroes and Palladium's Heroes Unlimited. I preferred Marvel because Palladium's character creation felt too limiting. I'm very interested in Masks but I don't currently have an in-person group to try it out with.
3) Choosing a favorite character would be tough. Generally, I prefer characters who are more closely grounded in reality. MCU I would probably have to say Captain America (Steve Rodgers) and Hawkeye (both). I liked the Arrowverse take on Captain Cold. For actual comic books, probably Nightwing.
4) PbP works really well for me because it's hard for me to commit to several hours at a specific day and time but I also love that (with a high post-rate PbP) you get to live with your character thoughout the week instead of having to get into character every session. The only thing I don't prefer about PbP is losing some of the spontaneity you get from an in-person session.
1. Superheroes have always been an interesting topic for me, ever since I watched the Christopher Reeves Superman movies as a kid. Then I dove headfirst into the MCU and DC shows and I don't think I came back up? 😆 Since watching those I've enjoyed reading some of the comics as well as novels. Also watched a few cartoons on and off. I personally like a mix of funny and serious when it comes to the superhero stories. Not a fan of recent batman movies so much cause it's a bit dark for me. Though I did watch most of Arrow so I guess it just depends on how dark it gets.
2. I haven't actually played more than a oneshot when it comes to superheroes. We used the Open Legend system which is what I'm most proficient in. I haven't played a game in 5e but I have read through the Player's handbook as well as watched several livestream games using it. Willing to put a ridiculous amount of time into learning and mastering the rules that would pertain to my character.
3. For a superhero with powers, Captain America(does what he feels is right no matter what) or Spiderman(quirky and fun). For non-powered Hawkeye/Clint Barton cause 1. Complex character with interesting history in both the comics and MCU. 2. Who is crazy enough to take a bow an arrows against superheroes?!
4. Never done one but I have done text rp with my last 2 year campaign. I really enjoy the flexibility of time it gives me to think about what the character would say or do before I just blurt it out. I don't like how it can get confusing without tone so I prefer having an open line of communication above table so lines don't get crossed and information miscommunication.

1. High level of interest in superheroes. I believe I still have the 89 Batman and the first two live action ninja turtles movies on VHS somewhere. I have a number of TPBs and a box or two of single issues. I don’t have time to read everything I would like anymore, but I keep up with the various happenings. Similar with the movies, there are just too many to keep up with, but I’ve seen a large amount. My favorites include the Dc animated stuff from the 90s & 2000s, Dan Slott’s Spider-Man run, Rick Remender’s Venom and Uncanny X-Force, and Dark Reign.
2. I haven’t yet. I’ve debated picking up M&M or the new Marvel system for my table at home.
3. Green Lantern John Stewart, he has has the powers of a god and doesn’t need to put much thought into his fights, but he remains down to earth and incredibly tactical. Spider-Man, has a fun power set, but isn’t overpowered like a lot of heroes. Plus the constant awkward jokes and smack-talk are always enjoyable to me. Honorable mentions to Doom, Namor, Iceman, Batman…
4. I work odd hours and it makes playing the game feasible for me. I also like that you actually get a chance to think about your words and actions. I feel like it allows a player to stick to the appropriate characterization for their PCs. I feel like real life games can lead to a fair amount of choices that don’t align with the character, because the group is moving on or they want to get something done before the session’s end. On the negative side, PBP campaigns seem to get a lot more people dropping randomly or they die out after a week or two. Also, there are a lot less of them around, making it harder to get into a game.
Do we have to be familiar to superheroes to do this? Like I know a bit about them, but not much, and this looks pretty cool.

1. I'd love to join this as a superhero nerd I'm more of a DC than marvel fan I prefer the older ones when it was an event to go see a marvel movie not just another dog shit filler.
2. I haven't played any superhero ttrpg I've only played DND 5e but I'm pretty experienced in it now
3. My favourite is probably superman as he's the best he deals with world ending villains and events and if he goes bad it affects the hole world. He always try's his best to save everyone and do the right thing.
4. Combat is difficult with out visuals but I'm a DM and I think I have found a ways to do it.
I would have no problems posting a few times a day and would be pretty much open to playing most heroes types. I'd love to join this let me know if you would like to know anything else. I would probably like to play a Deadpool like character the Merc with the mouth. So a mix of rouge fighter with a healing factor I guess.
Hey! I might be interested but of course want to know about some rules and that... however, here are my answers to your questions:
1-I am a huge fan of superheroes (Marvel, Dc Cómics) and tend to collect legos based in heroes stuff (Mainly marvel) and loved marvel movies (Even though right now the situation is not as bad but it´s improving)
2-I´ve never played any superheo rpg but I´m a quick learner and eaguer to try play it!!
3-Captain America because of his morals and Spiderman because mostly anyone can relate to him
4-I would say the pacing of answering or the turn in combat, and well the map is more in control by the DM only, but it works due to having a schedule that wouldnt allow me to get in vc
I hope I can be part of this game, I would love to try some ideas on a unique or a peculiar kind of character!!
This sounds awesome. And I know there's at least one thread currently recruiting for a 5e game set in the Star Wars universe, where they use a web site that's literally reskinned a good chunk of the basic 5e rules for Star Wars (at the least pretty complete jobs on race, class, backgrounds, and equipment ... haven't explored the site enough yet to know what else), so the idea is doable
Tell me about your interest level in superheroes. Do you read comics? Watch cartoons? Follow the plethora of superhero movies? Let me know what you like and why? I've always loved superheroes, my dad introduced me to them as a child and ever since then I've absorbed comics, movies, and everything in between. The worlds of Marvel and DC seem so fleshed out and real, and I appreciate the love and care that was put into these comics and movies.
What superhero rpgs have you played? What’s your favorite? Why do you like it? What don’t you like? I've played superhero 5e campaigns before, and they were really fun, but were one shots, so I was disappointed by how short it was.
Who’s your favorite superhero and why? If I'll be honest, I love what they were doing with the spiderverse, and the characters that came out of that, from the movies or not, have shaped up to be my favorite.
What do you like and dislike about play by post games? PBP games are convenient, and writing text gives you the chance to really think about what you say before you say it, and for that I love the PBP format. What it struggles with is the difficulty of people to really stick with the games, a problem I loathe happens, as I am usually the last one left.
This is an awesome concept and Post WWII/Noir is one of my favorite Genres. Regardless of whether I am selected I wish you all the best in making this work!
Tell me about your interest level in superheroes. Do you read comics? Watch cartoons? Follow the plethora of superhero movies? Let me know what you like and why? Read Comics/Watched Cartoons(90's-Early 2000s) Follow MCU/DCEU movies. Favorites are Phase 1 MCU because of the pre-GoG humor and Suicide Squad because I am a sucker for anti-heroes
What superhero rpgs have you played? What’s your favorite? Why do you like it? What don’t you like? Champions '84, GURPS/RIFTS, TMNT; I liked the Champions flexible character design, TMNT for the palladium mechanics
Who’s your favorite superhero and why? MCU WInter Soldier-era Captain America because Leadership and Belief/Will/Grit are very interesting superpowers and the moral conflicts/character arc transforms the character. Honorable mentions to Bullseye, Arrowverse White Canary, DC & Netflix Wilson Fisk, Netflix Daredevil
What do you like and dislike about play by post games? Like- Flexibility and time to compose/think/consider No Like- lack of nonverbal communication/ struggling to reconcile being active/proactive with giving everyone a chance to post

2. Ive played a couple of lego games but dont really play anything else.
3. my favorite superhero is spider-man. Peter's almost as smart as Tony with 5000x less resources and still does as much if not more than iron man.
4. I dislike puzzles as they take way too long, I enjoy a 25/75 balance of combat (25) and roleplay (75)

Tell me about your interest level in superheroes. Do you read comics? Watch cartoons? Follow the plethora of superhero movies? Let me know what you like and why?
I became interested in super heroes from buying "Ambush Bug" comics as a kid, then got back into them when I started playing "Champions" superhero RPG in college. I can't afford comics anymore but I kept up with Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew), X-men titles, Wonder Woman and whatever else caught my interest. Gargoyles and Danny Phantom included.
Sony Spiderman films were written and directed by the marketing staff who only thought of profit instead of scriptwriting. Example: They noted that "The death of Gwen Stacy" was one of the biggest selling comic lines and went out of their way to make film Gwen beloved by the audience before killing her as a "jump scare" in the last few minutes of the film. No build up, no "cat and mouse" between GG and SM, just "Boo! You're dead!" It's the most believable complaint I've heard about "Madam Web". DC films are falling into the same trap, but not as hard.
Marvel films and TV have been much better. I might even like The Marvels when I get to see it, but movies are just too %$#@! expensive so I wait for them to come to streaming.
What superhero rpgs have you played? What’s your favorite? Why do you like it? What don’t you like?
Champions, Marvel Supes and DC Supes. Champions (Hero Games). I like the system is designed around mechanics and special effects. The mechanics are "this range and this damage for this attack". The special effects are, you can define the attack as an eyebeam (cyclops), a thrown hammer or lightning (thor) or whatever "theme" fits your character. I don't like the low power levels or concepts (great for duplicates of Batman, Spiderman and super strength, takes a LOT of effort to run a D&D style wizard as a hero. Also only uses D6. You can roll a cup full of D6 if you have powerful attacks.
Who’s your favorite superhero and why?
Arthur O. Podd. He's the superhero i created with Champions. (Science based Mantis Man. Think "Wolverine + Spiderman")
What do you like and dislike about play by post games?
I like that they fit my schedule. Now that I'm out of college, SO much stuff takes my time that it's even hard for me to set a time of the week to meet for a Scype or Discord game.
I don't like the wait for responses, but it's the only way I get to play.
i've been DMing a magical girl campaign, and I have this character i created as a one-off combatant in a tournament arc we just did. I think she's kinda cool, and i've been itching to play her more. And, there's definetly a venn-diagram between super heroes and magical girls
does an aasimar gunslinging cowgirl magical girl who fights to overthrow corrupt churches and flirts with every cute girl she sees sound like a fit?

2. I once did a Marvel based campaign in 5e, but my players were stupid and just messed around. One of them played as "spider man" but he turned evil and went around murdering random people.
3. Hawkeye because he's funny or Spider man for the same reason
I've actually never played a PbP

Arthur O. Podd. He's the superhero i created with Champions. (Science based Mantis Man. Think "Wolverine + Spiderman")
I like that they fit my schedule. Now that I'm out of college, SO much stuff takes my time that it's even hard for me to set a time of the week to meet for a Scype or Discord game.
I don't like the wait for responses, but it's the only way I get to play.
Looks cool, I'll subscribe and observe the game. Let me know by Private Message if a spot opens.
hello, is this still open?
i've been DMing a magical girl campaign, and I have this character i created as a one-off combatant in a tournament arc we just did.
Sorry - we’re full. I also don’t think this fits the vibe we’re going for.

playing Jin Wei, human (Kara-tur) way of the Four Elements Monk in the Princes of the Apocalypse
1. Love superheroes! Totally awesome, the MCU is my favorite movie franchise
2. I once did a Marvel based campaign in 5e, but my players were stupid and just messed around. One of them played as "spider man" but he turned evil and went around murdering random people.
3. Hawkeye because he's funny or Spider man for the same reason
I've actually never played a PbP
