In Waterdeep there is a tavern called the Yawning Portal. In the middle of the tavern, there is a hole. This hole leads into a dungeon of immeasurable size and untold depth, called Undermountain. Traps are many, dangers abound, but still you feel drawn to it. After all, the few people that return tell of massive treasure hoards and powerful magic items. Will you be one of the people that return successfully, or will your skeleton soon add to the dangers that lurk beneath?
General Info
This is a combat and exploration focused campaign. Most of the time will be spent in a dungeon.
Level range is theoretically 5-17, we'll see how far we get.
The dungeon is dangerous. It's well possible for a character to die, so consider that when creating your pc and optionally have a backup ready.

Salus grew up rather poor, in the slums. As most of the tieflings he and his family were confronted with blatant racism, mostly from upper class citizens. The neighborhood seemed to tolerate his family. His adolescence was spent doing odd jobs, anything to gain some coin, which was quickly spent in the local tavern or alleyways for one substance or another. This led down a darker path of thievery and low level crime. Although he didn't have a luxurious life he still managed to share some of his ill gotten gains with beings even worse off than himself. One fateful night he ran into a debt collector to be truly honest he didn't even know for who he was collecting. He didn't have the coin to pay him off, let alone anymore than a few copper pieces. The usual beat down took a grim turn when Salus fell face first or a sharp rock. The collector heard a loud crack and knew it was bad, didn't think for a second more and fled the scene. With the only thing that gained weight being not his coin purse but his conscience. Salus fading in and out of reality saw a blinding light, a big hulking man with wings stood before him. Even though he felt his face touching earth, it felt like the man was a few feet before him. He introduced himself as a Solar. The monologue that the Solar touched on many subjects ranging from wasted potential to forgotten morals but also on glimmers of hope. He offered Salus one final chance to start again, blank slate. Salus knew if it wasn't for this being he would have died on the spot. Salus accepted, not knowing what this would entail. The Solar gave a quick rundown of the powers bestowed on Salus, and if he were to go in the right direction he would gain even more. The Solar disappeared leaving Salus wondering what the right direction would be. Salus thinks helping people survive the Undermountain would be a good step on the right path.
I have experience in 3.5 and 5e but mostly IRL. Learing PbP.
hi there! I'm interested in playing in your campaign. I have never played DotMM but always wanted to. Here are the basics on my character, will flush out more if accepted.
Jaya comes from a long legacy of descendants of an ancient Amethyst Gem dragon. Like his father, father before, etc., he joined the Water Deep city guard. A solemn duty to help protect the city that had accepted him and his kind, many years ago, he was told. But Jaya wasn’t like his father, and father before, etc. Jaya hated order. He hated everything about being a soldier. He hated the marching, the drills and endless practice, but most of all he hated taking orders.
Jaya yearned to be free of the strict military lifestyle, free to make his own choices, and mistakes. So, when his initial two-year term was at an end, he submitted his resignation to his “superior” officer. He took his insignia, designating him as a city guard, placed it upon the ground, and unleashed a devastating blast of force from his breath weapon. Thoroughly satisfied, Jaya left the guard house, determined to have a drink, and perhaps get intoxicated for the first time in his life.
He had frequently broken up fights at a watering hole called The Yawning Portal. It seemed like as good as any place to start on his path to self-reliance! Additionally, his breath weapon was ready to use again!
Hey, I had a question about the campaign posting schedule but am definitely interested.
How often do you want people to post?
During the week, posting multiple times is not a problem for me but weekends tend to be crazy but I should still be able to post at least once a weekend before life gets crazy.
I have not played PBP before and think this will be an interesting avenue to try out this character
I have not played DotMM before nor have I read the source material.
During his travels, Pisgah befriended Oliver, a Dwarven Cleric, who encouraged Pisgah to seek a group of adventurers, a tribe, that he could gather around him and begin to re-establish the sense of community that he lost early in his life. Oliver told him to make his way to The Yawning Portal, a tavern in Waterdeep, where he would be able to find people of a similar mind-set that he may be able to gather around him if only he could overcome his wariness of large crowds and cities. Oliver also told Pisgah a fantastic story about an entrance to the Underdark that was a central part of the tavern. After a bit of time has past, Pisgah works up his courage and makes his way to the tavern.
Backstory:
Pisgah was born during the height of a wild and violent storm into a nomadic tribe encamped in the wastelands. At the moment of his delivery a large slab of rock and mud broke away from the nearby hillside, tore down the slopes, and a number of tribe members died when trampled and mauled by animals fleeing the landslide. The tear in the hillside revealed a veined surface of matte black granite flowing with flecks of golden quartz across its surface. As the new mother delivered the child, she looked down and screamed as she saw a large dark skinned child with golden hued tendril like veins running through the surface of its skin and golden eyes pitted with black staring back at her. She named the child Pisgah saying, “You are a mountain that will never reach the promise, always crushing your brethren and causing them to stumble.” As she finished speaking the newborn uttered a guttural growl like a beast and his eyes filled with a lightening flash.
He quickly grew larger and stronger than the other tribal children did. His unusual appearance and a slow response to action, even to defend himself, left him ostracized and ridiculed by the tribe. Pisgah eventually became enraged at the incessant picking and prodding. Lashing out in a fit of rage, Pisgah’s black pupils swirled with streaks of lightening, like the skies on the day of his birth incorporating primal magic into his soul, as he struck the young man nearest him with a fist as hard as granite and knocking him to the ground. In retaliation, the man’s companion struck out at Pisgah, hitting him across the back with a staff. Feeling the blow crack across his shoulder blades unlocked something deep within Pisgah. A lashing spiny tail burst from Pisgah, knocking the man down and breaking the arm holding the staff. With two men down, the fighting stopped as everyone backed away quickly from the oddity in their midst. The tribal leaders, backed by the tribe’s hunters, then banned Pisgah, shunning him and forcing him from the tribal encampment.
Striking out on his own, Pisgah wandered the hills alone as he fought nature and the elements for survival. Along the way, he learned that not all who see him look at him with sideways eyes or expect him to be the cause of something bad or ill omened. Despite the few positive encounters had with people on the road, Pisgah is more relaxed and at home among the animals and outside of large groups of people. However, living alone in the wilds is exhausting as well as dangerous and he soon realized the advantage of a tribe was protection within the larger numbers and the broader range of skills and experience. Pisgah is seeking to find a group with whom he can begin to rebuild what he was forced to leave behind.
Heahmund was born to the far northern reaches of the world living within the graces of a group of human clan which had protection from a group of storm giant, dedicating his life to the all father Heahmund was sent on quest to gain knowledge on the world even if it has just rubbed of on him, guide by a raven his is set his sight upon the under mountain for a new adventure.

At least once per day would be good to move at a reasonable pace, especially since there will be quite a lot of combat and die rolls in this module. And you're welcome to try out the format! The format of this campaign is well suited to dropping out too if you feel like it's not for you.
The nature of his people's curse are well-known, which unfortunately draws animosity from many a nation. As a hatchling, Nikkitch witnessed such animosity firsthand. His caravan burned, his people suffered, he was shot. However he managed to survive; he did so on the promise that he would find those responsible and wreak his terrible revenge. That was years ago. Now, Nikkitch has found himself well and beyond his prime, his promise largely unfulfilled. Picking through trash and robbing the corpses of unfortunate travelers has kept him alive, if only just. Until he found the wizard's staff.
Some wretched fool of a scholar fell dead in an alley, after making his wealth all too clear to the city's shadier elements. Nikk arrives long after, picking through what remains of his cold carcass, finding a slender knotted walking stick to be his only possession remaining worthwhile of being taken. Upon touching it, however, he feels something new to him: power untapped. His latency exposed, Nikkitch finds old aspirations raring forth, whispers of revenge unfulfilled.
But he finds pause in an unfortunate truth: there are numbers far stronger than he. He needs more, more power, more magic. Enter the Yawning Portal. A place of ill repute, to be sure. But the rumors of grand magic hidden in the depths of it's maw prove all too tempting for the old crow. Upon hearing of a new expedition, he is quick to apply, a wayward wizard offering spells to malaise and maim all foes, provided he has call to any spells found therein.
Daphymira is a librarian. She was raised as an orphan in the temple of Selune, but she is not very good at talking to people. Since the temple had a library, she hid there and … learned. Which was great. Unfortunately, reading, dusting and handing out books was not what the Abesse saw as the life path of a priestess favored by the Lady of Silver, so Daphne was send out to seek knowledge not just from books, but from experience. If she should come back with some artifacts to help pay the temple orphanage’s bills, then surely that would be the will of the goddess…
Daphy is a character I played “The lost Mines of Phandelver” with, which is very much the sum of her adventuring experience. She can act as a healer, knows lots of (most times not really useful) stuff and has just found out that sometimes it can feel good to hit really bad people really really hard with a mace. Otherwise she prefers to let people who know what they are about handle conflicts and social interactions, and concentrates on supporting them.
I have rather a lot more experience adventuring in 5e, but have never played or read DotMM.
Thalia Shadowglen is a drow rogue [arcane trickster] with a lithe frame and haunting violet eyes that seem to hold a hint of mischief. Her sleek, white hair is often tied back in a practical ponytail, keeping it out of her face during her daring escapades. She moves with a graceful agility, her steps silent and calculated.
Thalia is an exile from the underdark, having escaped the drow way of life years ago. When she made her way to the surface world and to Waterdeep, she was taken in by a human wizard named Gavius.
Thalia's drive to venture back into the Undermountain — something she swore she would never do — is fueled by a deeply personal quest for redemption. A few months ago Gavius disappeared while on an expedition into the underdark. Haunted by guilt over her not being at his side to protect him, Thalia has dedicated herself to uncovering the truth behind his disappearance. Rumors swirl that he may still be alive, trapped somewhere within Undermountain's labyrinthine passages. Determined to rescue him and make amends for her perceived failure, Thalia is now willing to break her vow, and return to the underdark. With each step she takes, however, Thalia finds herself drawn further into a world she had left behind. A ruthless place where the answers she is after may come at a price that she is not yet prepared to pay.
I'm still working on the sheet ... but Thalia will be a straight rogue. I am not planning on multiclassing with this character.
Edwina-cantilla Springissprung is a curious, adventurous, and creative gnome. Before settling down, she was an adventurer and Harpers agent. After meeting the love of her life, Bwibble, and he was injured, Canti settled down to become a wife and then mother. Now that their child has grown and left the nest, Canti has resumed her adventuring. Bwibble, a skilled artificer, supported his family by designing and building technological marvels despite his disability. Now, Canti is back adventuring partly to field test some of Bwibble's more destructive inventions, but also because she just loves it. Canti isn't a slouch when it comes to tinkering herself, so while Bwibble is the mastermind behind his inventions, Canti can maintain and even modify the inventions herself when needed.
Venturing into the Undermountain has been a dream of Canti's since she began adventuring, but the opportunity never presented itself. Now that she has the chance, she is chomping at the bit to descend and explore. What great advertising it will be for Bwibble's inventions after they have survived an excursion to the Undermountain!
Character flavor: While she is technically an arcane archer, all of Canti's "magic" will be technological.
For the fun of it, let's roll for abilities (rerolling 1s once; if that isn't cool, let me know, and I'll look at the rolls and use the 1s that were rolled): Ability scores: 161713101011
Rico is an autognome artificer from another world. When the spelljammer she was the medic/engineer for was visiting Waterdeep (while pretending to be a normal sailing vessel), Rico had gone ashore to restock on supplies. For some reason unknown to her, Rico's ship left suddenly, leaving Rico stranded without a job, on a planet without spelljammers, as a member of an unknown race that might not even be considered people here, she now needs a way to make money before her supplies of cash run out. For someone with no past (at least on this world), the Yawning Portal looks like a good deal. So she spent the rest of her cash preparing for a dungeon expedition, starting with replacing the tools that had been left aboard ship, and infusing her weapons to make them easier for her to use.
While she can fight either at range or in melee as needed, and she has the steel defender she built to help, she knows from experience that more companions will help greatly.
Now all she needs to do is find some new companions to journey with. In return she can maintain their gear and help keep them alive.
I had posted a character, a couple hours ago, then went back to edit it to put in a reference to the character sheet, but then my post disappeared! So reposting...
