I'd will shift over to "helper" mode, meaning, run to nearest Soldier who is unconscious and help them revive to avoid making death saves. Picking one within my movement distance that is the worst at rolling the death saves,. I believe I can do one of these per round. Ideally, no soldiers will ultimately die.
Thalion MOVES to nearby Soldier who is unconscious and stabilizes him to 1 HP.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Tides are turning, Solders! Fight on!!!" Thalion yells
As this is round 3, odds of a soldier about to fail his 3 death saves won't happen even by rolling a 1 this round, I believe the fell in Round 2, so he leaves the Helping to Thalion. (A table of the soldiers status would help for next round)
Pippin: Assuming the entangle is still holding 3 Orcs, he will keep his concentration on them, then target O4 with his bow.
DM question: In the Attack and Damage text, I see Red, Blue, and Gray text.... what do the colors mean?
The Dice roller can "hide" multiple dice. In an attempt to make the rolls more transparent, Green means that one of the dice rolled is the max value. For a 1d20, this means a critical succes. Red means the minimum value was rolled, for 1d20 this means critical failure. Blue means not a 1 and not a max. Purple, you will only see when 2 or more dice are rolled and one die is a 1 and the other is max, it's a mixed crit result.
I'm going to have to take a break (for work and kids lol) but I'll pick this back up after 5pm EST.
Please Vote to resolve this combat in one of two ways, I'm happy completing either path:
* Continue with the massive dice resolution, with multiple NPCs fighting multiple NPC, to see how many troops die to stop the Orc Raid * Cinematically end the combat now, with a random number of casualties, based on DM discretion, potentially opening up a new scene faster than waiting for this one to resolve with dice rolls.
Vote: end combat. I appreciate the work you have with rolling and typing, your pain is more than my pleasure... continuing is not worth it. You can add to the cinematic: Thalion and Pippin want to help save as many solders as possible... by helping those who are making death rolls, and fighting also.
With their actions, they want to:
demonstrate Leadership, Courage, and Fighting Skill to Lieutenant Grimes
demonstrate Commitment and Support to the Soldiers
The thought occurred briefly to Thalion to run away, however, he had no intention of leaving the men to die, and would have rather died along side them than be a coward and flee.
You can wrap up the fighting, then I'm happy to engage in conversation/role playing. That was awesome, and very complicated. Thanks for the work you did behind the scenes, I'm sure it was some effort.
Thelion continues to fight the orc raiders, now back to back with Lt Grimes who recovers with a Second Wind and then a Rally cry. Pippin goes ferral on an Ogre while the reinforcements whitle the orcs down to onle a few. Before the last Orc falls, the ogres deal massive damage to the troops and take longer to bring down, by the time the infantry reach thw battle, the last Ogre finally falls.
Thelion is able to stabalize 4 dying soldiers, while Pippin manages to save 7
In the end 2 soldiers die in the battle which is still considered a huge victory.
After the battle is over the troops and reinforcements all march back to Far Outpost where they ligjt a bon fire and Portwell roasts two bulls a few boars and an owl bear ove the fire.
A victory celebration is had that lasts all night and in the morning you are summoned to Lt Grimes' amd tent
"It's no doubt that your presence in our skirmish with the orcs helped to secure our victory. And i know that i cannot convince you to join our ranks. Instead i have a special assignment if you choose to continue to help our efforts."
He turns a small wooden box towards you and opens it to reveal bracers of archery and an ioun stone of insight.
Please, take these gifts, no matter what your descision.
"Our spys in the darkwood collected inetel that an orc raid was coming. However, our agents failed to report and i fear the worst. Please, secret into the wood and recover our spies or help determine their outcome. We are simply not in the business to train troups in survival and bushcraft, no offense. But those are the exact skills that we need for this mission."
You also gain 275 XP plus the 50 XP from before so you have reached level 2.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Wa-hoo! (re: your summary of the battle outcome and the results)
"I'd be happy to search and rescue your spies." I say. "Thank you also for the gifts, they will come in handy. Your men fought bravely and I'm so pleased the outcome was not worse. Loosing those two good men cannot be easy for you or the garrison, yet the men holding off that Orc raid surly saved the outpost. Any information you can provide for Pippin and me regarding the spies' potential location, and we'll be on our way to get those allies of yours."
I figure my hunting and tracking skills will get the job done (finding the spies). The first place I'd start is backtracking the Orc Raiding Party, assuming somewhere along their path, I might pick up the spies' trail. A long rest from the night before restores my HP. I'll get my chanracter sheet up to date, I figure any HP I gain will also go to Pippin. Also, I take a shot to ask the Lieutenant for a favor:
"Lieutenant Grimes, if I may ask a favor. With your permission, I would like the garrison's leatherworker to fashion a vest for Shadowfang, my wolf you see here. Do you think that would be alright? I'm sure it would not cost the garrison much in the way of material or time, in fact, it can be a small filler-job for your leatherworker." I pause. "It would certainly mean a lot for me and help me when conducting your business." I smile Persuasion check: 4
(I said "...HP I gain will..." I meant "...EXP I gain will...")
How do you add want to add HP to a character when leveling?
Also, I will be moving some items from Thalion inventory to Pippin and vice-versa as time goes on, without bother to text it. (based on weight to keep everyone unencumbered.) (The hunting trap is a bit heavy, and I want to keep it.)
Also, if ok with you: Treating the Wolf and Owl as pets that will always be following us, but don't need texting, yet I will occasionally bring them into the role playing, just for fun.

Default HP is half die plus 1, so to gain a 1d10 you get exactly 6 hp plus you always get your Constitution modifier. Alternative options is to roll your hitpoints, which means you roll a 1d10 and take the result, even if you roll a 1 you, still add con mod, so taking the average is a good deal and the default.
You may need to add XP and choose your second level class, usually staying in class instead of multiclassing is best for new players, especially if you are racing to get Extra Attack at Ranger 5
Alright, I'd like a little coaching, please, on the ioun stone of insight. I'm working on how to get this setup in the character sheet. my question to you is how to attune this. my first venture into this aspect of D&D. If I read the handbook right, I do a short rest with it, and that attunes it to me. From then, I use and action to trigger it. As I read the details of this item, I toss it in the air (now) and it starts orbiting my head "forever" unless I pull the stone (that is orbiting my head) down, or someone tries to take it down. So, I think I tell the DM: I'm taking a nap (short rest) to attune, then I can just toss it now, add the 2 to my wisdom, and leave it that way "forever" and move on, right?
5th edition has a magic attunement system. This means that no matter what level you are, you can only equip three attunement items. Both the bracers of archery and the ioun stone of insight at attunement items, so you must first equip them and then attune them. Attunement takes 1 hour in game, so you can't equip an attunement item in the middle of a battle.
Ok I've got the bracers on Thalion, equipment and attuned. Same for Pippin with the stone.
Hit Points, I'm over thinking this... when I changed the lvl from 1 to 2, it changed his HP from 12 to 20, poof. Thanks, though for explaining the math, that is what I needed. Thanks: I'm glad I'm doing the solo thing with you, as it would have been embarrassing and a waste of other people's time to learn these basics of using the character sheet in DDB.
I believe the two characters are all set, and we are ready to resume the game, if you are. (I'm in the process of setting up the ranger spells.) Did I convenience Lieutenant Grimes to let me use his leatherworker at not cost to make a leather vest for Shadowfang? I'd like to get that going, explain the design with saddlebags to the leatherworker, so that he can get going on it while I tend to other things, like go find the spies.
You should get a free set of studded leather armor, military issue, for you and a set for Pippin to wear and a crafted version of Studded Leather Barding which will increase Shadowfang's effective AC by +2
After gearing up, replenishing arrows, stocking up on rations, you are sent off with a small escort to the same spot of the Orc Battle. Thelion and Pippin (and Shadowfang) wave goodbye as you disappear into the woods.
Tracking a dozen orcs and two ogres is fairly easy.
Please give me ten Survival Checks total, two Stealth Checks each, One check per character of Acrobatics, Athletics, Perception, or Investigation
10x Team Survival Checks 2x Stealth Checks (Each) 2x Any One skill (Each), Acrobatics, Athletics, Investigation, Perception.
As you enter the Darkwoods, you must use all your skills to traverse and pass without a trace.

Absolutely awesome, thanks, Lieutenant Grimes. (putting those on the team now).
We set a course to get those spies. Heading north into the Darkwood. My plan is follow the course (reversed) that the Orc raiding party took, figuring the spies might be along the way, and closer to the source there the Orc raiding party started.
As we travel, Pippin is looking for critters that he can observe so that he can use Wild Shape and turn into one that he has seen. (just an IDEA as an example) Pippin: "Hey, Thalion, is that a bearover there a far ways off, sipping water in the stream? Good thing he does not see us, I sure see him." (smile at the DM)
