Cha!jil had been wondering about the cage herself but Koselig was a much better speaker and less immediately threatening so nodded as the went on keeping an ear out for any signs of others being here.
"The curse is not a natural disease, unfortunately. Some folk will call a common ailment a curse, even believing it so, but this is definitely some form of Necromancy, I have concluded. Yet, it is at odds, behaving not in the usual way of arcane magic. Neither the weave nor the power unfettered behaves white this way. It is almost like the divine magic of the healers is being reversed. Less a spell and more akin to a blessi g undone, yet I see in it evidence of the arcane. There is something actively working to do thus, and I believe it is here in Chult. I think out expedition us close to finding it, but I co fess, I have felt this was true before, only to be proven wrong " Valindra explai s as she watches Koselig explore the room.
An opening in the wall reveals a smaller recessed space. It is evident to Kos that the markings on tje floor are a teleportation circle, plainly hiw she has managed to make this remote location a base of operations.
There is a closet on the wall farthest from the cave entrance. Even as he taps it, nothing of note occurs. However, it had not escaped Ch!jil's notice that there is an unpleasant aroma coming from behind the closet door, perceptible to her keen senses even through the smell of bringing incense that hangs in the air.
Valindra continues: "I think it's something in the ruins of Omu. Scholars have written much about the path of the souls after they depart their mortal vessels, and based on my calculations and observations from thjs outpost, I believe that something there is intercepting and hoarding these souls, creating g a negative pressure of soul energy felt throughout the peninsula. The field team is exploring the ruins even as we speak."
At the question kf the cage, Valindra answers matter-of-factly, "Why, it's for prisoners, of course. I told you this curse is the work of a powerful mage, I know it. We are getting close. I can feel it. If my field team can capture one of their minions, we can use them to find out what is at the heart of this and maybe how we can stop it. I know what your thinking... 'a cage seems awfully mundane for an arcane scholar, such as yourself. Why not some sort of magical binding or an enchantment or some such?' Well, that just shows you're naivety, for you have not considered there is a non-zero chance a captive will be magically bolstered by the very caster behind this curse. An anti-magic field, therefore would be a most useful tool in such an inquiry, so long as the sequestration of our captor isn't likewise dependant on magic. Somitimes, the simplest solution is the best the solution."
"Supplies" the elf responds, nonchalantly. "Now, if you're interested, I certainly wouldn't mind some extra hands helping out with this investigation. Once I fi d tbe source of thus death curse, I intend to imprison it by whatever means necessary. I truly do not wish to destroy such an anomalous and powerful magical quandary, yet if it mist come to that, it is mynduty to do so."
"How long as your field team been exploring the ruins of Omu? On their most recent outing I mean? Were you expecting them back soon? Could something have happened to them?"
Kos looks for somewhere comfortable to sit, if there are no chairs or obvious places, he will seek somewhere natural like a step, or create his own by piling a small stack of books on the floor to create a makeshift stool or seat.
"Cha!jil, where were you and the others heading again before we stopped at that doomed camp and were attacked by Etali?"Kos pauses as he tries to remember, "You all had a similar calling... some matter of great import?"
"It's not uncommon for them to be gone for a week or more. We were, I think, among the first to notice the curse and have been here for months: long before the merchant princes ever heard of it. I sent them out three days ago now. They're not especially fast, but they are very thorough. If you tired to, you could certainly overtake them or join up with them. Are you interested in exploring the city? Whatever your purpose, if you're heading there, I would consider you as allies and perhaps I could offer some magical assistance to aid you." replies Valindra.
It's not that bad, dust motes maybe, but generally parasites are uninterested in the undead, so there's little concern for lice or fleas. Even the mosquitos don't bother at this altitude. But there are some factors that can't be avoided, hence the incense." She gestures to a block of the stuff burning on a brazier, it's smoke gently wafting from the decorative yet functional holes set throughout the abstract geometric form."
(I wasn't really trying to be that detailed describing the incense. Its not a clue. It's just incense)
Feigning surprise, Valindra asks Cha!jil "Oh, surely you don't mean to get rid of them? They're incredibly useful. I'd have made no headway at all without them."
Ba Kos raises his bushy eyebrows in mock surprise, "Well, well, well, seeing as how you're not surprised I'm guessing this isn't some sort of undead invasion." Keeping an eye on Valindra, "Did you make these yourself or take them from below?" Kos will gesture with a downward nod of his head in the direction of the jungle surface.
"This place is overrun with undead. It's true, for quality, you can't beat home-made, but as they say, quantity has a quality of its own." Valindra responds.
"Well, why would they do si h a thing? It's not as if they have a mind of their own. So, what do you say? Are you up for exploring Omu in search of the source of rhis insidious death curse?" enquires Valindra.

Cha!jil opened the closet.

<Thanks again for the repost>
As she speaks, Cha!jil opens the closet, revealing six Chultan zombies and two girallon zombies. They stand inertly, eyes open but motionless.
" You've got to get some cleaners in here..."Cha!jil remarked.

Cha!jil shrugged, " As long as they don't try to eat my face like every single other one I run across down there then I guess I don't need to."
