This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
SIGH! Khalin Gool will bow to the accumulated wisdom of the ages and go for a +2 xbow. Using 10k of his own and 8K from the party treasure, plus the spell of Expertise. Do I roll the die for the check? If so Arcana at +7 would be his best bonus, thus -> 30.
"I can shape a door that'll allow another of me own size t' move o'er a wee bit with me," Khalin Gool says. "Ma'haps we c'uld find a lightly guarded ingress, tak' oot a guard, pitch 'm off a cliff or som'thin', aye? Stinkin' giants."

I think Expertise only doubles the proficiency bonus not the entire skill so it would not be +14 but +11 for Kahlin (unless I have miscalculated)
"Ah, Kahlin'" says Thar not trying to sound too superior, "but I think I may be better skilled at the creation of items (+13 with Expertise) so I would be happy to work on the crossbow for you. As you know such an item would be considered quite rare and thus hard to create though not as difficult as I found enhancing Arya's sword. Which of course I failed at."
Assuming this discussion took place whilst Thar still had the benefit of Bardic Inspiration 3 and Guidance 3 and Enhance Ability (post #1690) for his previous work his Arcana check would be 20.
Thar has no cunning plan unless he recalls something like a side wall through which he could cast Passwall in the hope of possibly sneaking in,
Passwall only opens a passage 20' deep, so no. Dimension Door, on the other hand, has a range of 500'.
And the downside of being limited to Thar and one willing creature being all he could take. Not much of a fan of that idea.
Two rings of spell storing and a Cape of the Mountebank. Back in my 4E and 3E days there was an idea of putting most of the group into a portable hole so that they count as luggage not passengers.
"So we entered out of this passage from the north, right?" Fah'lin asks, examining the map. "You've all got better memory than I."
You dealt with the guards at 1) and 2) then down the passage on the east edge and then south at the four-way intersection to room 9) with all the giant smiths.
"I would favour going in the same way as last time," says Thar. "Whilst the giants may have stationed extra guards at the entry I sure they would be on high alert elsewhere in the stronghold. Should someone have a way to scout out a secluded area to Dimension Door into that could give us an advantage but without such pre-knowledge we could find ourselves surrounded if we just try for anywhere."
Okay sleepyheads, I'm heading off to visit my brother and we're going on a road trip. Posting will be limited to evenings when we reach our accommodations (WiFi permitting), will be back late Saturday afternoon.
"What we need," Fah'lin says, "is some kind of Magic Spying spell."
Arya "Or an invisible rogue out in front with a magic speaking spell running to talk back to the group."
"As I have not yet had the opportunity to learn such a spell," says Thar "I think the invisible sneaky one is they way to go. I will however put the spell on my to do list. For next time"
You rest up and get you spells in order then Thar use the chain to connect tp the Node overlooking the giant’s glacier. The previous visit you moved, with great effort, the boulder blocking the path off the ledge but left the one blocking the exit out onto the glacier in place, instead using a passwall spell. Use a spell again or do you want to move the boulder to conserve your magic?

Mice or spiders are somewhat rare in glaciers.

((We'll also use advantage, Bardic Inspiration and Guidance with Thar's arcana bonus to improve the chance of success.))
Fah'lin nods sagely, but secretly, he scarcely understood a word of that. "Let's map out what we've seen already, yeah?"

Seems like it worked.
