Set on the homebrewed, man conquered continent of Jarûnd, where two factions are at war for land and ideals, this hostile adventure abounds with cutthroats and dark forests, and long forgotten ruins that expand into the depths of the earth itself.
Endless Night is a 3 to 4 player campaign that might prove a little difficult for new players; without necessarily leaning towards TPK, the environment will still prove itself unforgiving to those not suited for survival (as a mindset; not referencing the Survival skill). That being said, all applications will be reviewed equally; if you're new and feel up to the challenge, do not hesitate; this is but a friendly warning.
The only homebrewed aspects of this campaign will be the setting. Homebrewed Classes or Races are not welcome, as I prefer to keep the game balanced. That being said, all expansions of the 5th edition are welcome!
Discord
We will be using Discord's features (non voice) for:
Personal communication between the DM and a player. This includes some back and forth to shape your character's story into the campaign's setting.
Character 1 on 1 interactions prompted by the players. (Rules about this explained down below, in the Posting Rules section.)
Out of character (OOC) chat room!
About Fair Play
If you have OOC (Out Of Character) knowledge about something you shouldn't know IC (In Character), that knowledge shouldn't guide your character's actions. The same rule applies if one player's character's actions upset another player, and that player lets that fuel their character's in-game response. Please use your OOC wisdom and don't let your reactions to a situation in-game impact your experience out-of-game, and vice-versa.
Quoted from a fellow DM: Most of the times situations like this occur, we either don't realize we're even doing so or we don't truly mean it and are being sarcastic, getting caught up in the moment, etc. The problem is that sarcasm doesn't come off well over text. So please be courteous to each other, since the only things we see are the icon and name and not the person on the other side of the screen.
Posting Requirements
Players are expected to post at least once a day. If, for any reason, you are not able to post for a given amount of time, please let me know ahead of time, through PM or Discord.
If you are consistently missing for extended periods of time without notice or warning, you will be removed from the campaign without notice or warning. It is not fair to the other players when we have to wait three days for an action from your character because you disappeared without any heads up.
On the subject of writing: while the majority of us are not professional writers, there is a certain quality threshold that is expected. Embroider our lecture with detail, give your character an accent, remind us how they walk, etc. In pbp, you are as much the storyteller as the DM, I am simply here to guide the story.
Posting Rules
To understand each other better, a style of writing is always a good idea when it comes to differentiating speech from thoughts, or narration from speech. Bear with me, I come from old school forum motion pbp's, and I eventually adopted a favorite style which we'll be using for this campaign. Here it goes:
We will have narration in italic.
*Thoughts in asterisk.*
"Speech in quotation."
Skill checks in bold.
You are more than welcome to use color to personalize your speech, but please refrain from lighter hues, as they are straining to read.
As a player, it is your duty to follow these typing rules and to remain alert to what other characters are saying vs thinking. Be vigilant in not referencing another character's thoughts, as they are not audible.
We also like to stir away from caps lock. No one enjoys that but the typist. Don't be that barbarian. (OK, maybe for raging.)
If your character would like to have a private conversation with another character, or if you want to commune with your god- for example, this is where Discord comes in handy. We will have private channels where your character will be able to converse with each other. Once the side conversation ends, it is very important that one of the participants in the conversation copies the text into the forum, under the spoilers tag. This helps everyone follow the story OOG, while Discord helps the player have a more fluid 1 on 1 conversation.
Applying for the Game
A gentle reminder about the darker setting of Endless Night: you will start your journey on the continent of Jarûnd, where a purging of unholy magic is spreading from the West. What started as a witch hunt quickly escalated into the severe forbiddance of all magic, unless it is holy. Even then, only a few gods are allowed worship in some parts of the land.
If you are interested in joining the adventure, keep in mind that any unholy spellcaster will be challenged in many ways as the story progresses. There are observable differences between spellcasting classes (druids might not have it as bad as warlocks, for example), so feel free to ask anything that crosses your mind. Also, the main race populating Jarûnd is men, so any exotic races (even if welcome as a character standpoint) will probably be a liability in some way.
To apply, please PM me, Yayabeams, with the following filled (keeping in mind that we are starting at level 1):
Character Name:
Race:
Class: (You are welcome to include your potential future subclass if it isn't a level 1 option. This is not mandatory.)
Ability Scores: (Standard array or 27 point buy options, your choice.)
Skill Proficiencies:
Description: Please describe the character generously. Pretend we’re looking at him/her/they for the first time. What do we see? Be as detailed as possible.
Background: (Include all traits/flaws/etc. This is also the ONE time you are allowed to stray off the path and invent your own Background options! This is optional, and only for those who think their character would benefit from a custom text. What I usually suggest is to inspire yourself by an already existing option in the PHB and go from there.)
Backstory: Please be as detailed as you want to be. Your backstory will be a major factor in picking players for this game. The more thought you put in your backstory, the better chance we’ll be seeing you in-game.
Goal: What is your character’s ultimate goal in life?
I might ask for specifications, or I may explore your character in depth with you through some creative back and forth. Like I stated earlier, your character past will most likely be tied into the story of the campaign.
The Story
It is under blood spilled and the smell of burnt flesh that the small continent of Jarûnd found itself divided once more. From the West came complaints of dark magic and trespassings on the laws of nature, which slowly turned into revolts and witch hunts. Throughout history, it wasn't unusual for the West to have such fast aversion to any sighting of witchcraft, but how things escalated so fast this time around, no one knew. Of course, the Western King did not lift a finger when the protests turned into atrocities, which did not help the many cases of murder in small towns. But the people were unsatisfied. As if a thirst for blood had shaken the people of the West, their maddening ire spread like wildfire, and soon formed militias who patrolled the land, torturing and burning witches and wizards at sight. And yet again, the Western King stood silent.
The resounding force against this wave of purge was the Knights of the Silver Hand, the elite force of Stormheim, capital of the East. The Eastern lands are one of the few places on the continent where other races can still settle in peace. Nelaeryn is the last elven city of the continent, residing deep inside the forest of Aulë; and Môgren Dûr the last dwarven city, inside the mountains of Hundal. Though it is rare, half-elves can be found amidst the Silver Hand Order, along with even fewer wood elves or hill dwarves. The King of the East accepts to condone necromancy and other desecrated arts, but has vowed to protect the innocent from the violent blindness of the West.
At the center of all this, where the roads of the Western Kingdom drive south and collide with the Eastern roads, a small inn barely stands in the swampy lands right above the Desecrated Hills, going by the name of Hook. Hook's owner, Malerie Toad, a fierce woman, ex-crew pirate, takes pride in her vast knowledge of the many rumors coming from the West, and always lands an ear to drunk bastards who know more than they should-- and talk more than they should.
Your adventure will start in Hook's Creek, the small town built around Hook's services. What happens next is entirely up to you.
NOTE: Please refrain from posting here as we will use this thread as the in-game thread! Thanks!
