"I suggest returning here as once we have the more simple routes completed, we can return to the more resistant paths once we have cleared out the areas we have ease of access to. It's a better use of our resources." Destin advises.
If this is not the work of the graveyard's custodians, says Marrow, nodding at Cassyt, then I think it bears investigating. Cover away, he says to Tumal, and slowly enters the room, trying to be reasonably quiet. Assuming that Casmenos comes with him, Marrow will edge very carefully to the side of the pit, moving three feet round to the left so that Tumal can move to the right. He holds his glowing longsword over the pit, braces his stomach, and takes a good look down. Perception/Investigation 11 (it's the same +3 modifier for either)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
As Marrow moves forward, Casmenos shrugs apologetically at Destin and then also enters the room. Casmenos will follow the wall around the pit on the opposite side of Marrow, looking to move past the pit. He is looking for two things:
First, impressions about the pit itself; are the bones new, recently disturbed or of a creature that wouldn't be expected in a catacomb? Investigation: 16
Tumal complies and is standing to the right of the entrance to the pit room along the wall, an arrow knocked and following the progress of Marrow and Casmenos, ready to let the arrow fly at the first sign of danger (in the form of something to shoot).
Tumal keeps an arrow knocked as Casmenos carefully but purposefully cross along the narrow pathway to one side of the pit. He gets there without even a brief wobble, where he can clearly see the corridor continuing past this room, curving around to the left.
At this point, anybody who has not indicated as such is still on the stairs outside the door, so those of you in the room, keep that in mind as you plan how far ahead you wish to move.
Casmenos says to Marrow and Tumal, "I will peek around the corner, but go no further." He'll flatten himself against the wall to use it as cover against ranged attacks, to peek around the corner.
Casmenos returns to the pit and informs Marrow and Tumal, "Another room, and I smelled smoke. Pass this along to the others, and ask Cassyt what she thinks."
Casmenos says he sees another room and smells smoke. Marrow looks down into the pit again, and frowns at Cassyt: Do you have any ideas about this, ma'am?
Do any of the bodies in the pit look or smell burnt?
There are no bodies in this pit, just a large pile of jagged, old bones apparently tossed into the pit. If there had been a smell on the bones at one point, it has long since dissipated.
Cassyt pales as she approaches close enough to take on the sight. "No...I have no idea."
Upon hearing Casmenos' revelation, Cassyt replies "I do not know - I am a historian of the Last Rites -- these are outside my boundaries. I know of little past the Hall of the First Families, I do not recall of any rituals involving smoke, and I certainly know no Faithful I know would just...just...discard bones like that."
"Could you see anything in this chamber of smoke?"
Casmenos answers, "I did not want to separate from the group. We have a decision to make, all move and investigate the smoke, or head down deeper into the catacombs. Now that I'm on this side, if someone has rope, I can hold one end from this side and that should make crossing the pit easier."
Tumal looks at Casmenos and then at the others with a curious grin on his face. "I say we investigate the smoke." He takes his rope, hempen (50 feet) and tosses one end to the paladin. "Either way, I can help you or you can help me," he smiles, waiting for the others to weigh in on which direction they should travel.
If people do decide to go around the pit and join Casmeros, describe how you are using it. One at a time, to pull somebody out if they fall? All at once, tied together? Something different?
I imagined that the rope would be held at each end, and people could cross the narrow ledge while also being able to hold onto the rope for extra leverage. If the others would prefer tying people with it... I'm not going to be difficult about it.
If the pit is circular, then maybe using the rope as a handhold wouldn't work - the rope would go across the middle of the pit, too far from the path. What's the diameter of the pit?

Casmenos, please give me an Acrobatics check

Keksi stays close to Cassyt; smoke in what should be an empty catacomb seems... off.
