Seid makes a show of rolling his eyes at Jex's antics, but think shares a wink with the elf as the doors swing open. He glances down the tunnel as Thurston speaks. "Yes, well... that is what concerns me. They Mabinogi are exceptionally brilliant. They have been planning this for a very long time and they are patient. Either they are way ahead of us, or they are hiding somewhere and letting us figure out all the traps for them. I do not like this situation. It bodes ill to me."
"So... if they are so brilliant why they need us to figure the traps? and how are they learning how to beat them? Besides, we took the keys with us back at the room where I found Rikkazarik so they cannot pass that one! Nah I think that they are ahead of us, but they are not as brilliant as we are if they needed so much time. I think they fooled you on thinking they are smart. Don't worry we will make pay for that too. Let's go friends! We have Manibogi to hunt!"
He walks down the corridor with the light of his shield to illuminate the way.
At least this time he only mispelled one letter of the name.
As the far end of the corridor comes into view, Thurston's light illuminates a large pair of shining, metal double doors. It's the same dull, silvery material as the warded puzzle gate in the mines. Rikkazarik, Karakarin and Karakaklad also all appear to be forged in the same fashion. The doors stand slightly ajar, and the faint sound of voices can be heard carrying through the gap into the corridor.
Jex instantly takes a few steps ahead at a half run, melting into the shadows and looking forward through the door. If he could take the leader quickly perhaps this fight would be over fast.
Jex peers between the doors and a huge, dark chamber opens up before him, stretching out farther than he can see on both sides. Ten feet beyond the doors a flight of stairs runs fifteen feet up to a raised platform, atop which hobgoblin guards keep watch. The warped and twisted corpse of a wizard is sprawled across the steps. To the left and right of the stairs, the sides of the raised area are adorned with murals carved into the stone. The chamber continues upwards, until the half-elf's eyes can penetrate the darkness no longer, and the air is filled with swirling energy in cyan, lime-green and magenta.
After the intellectual excitement of working their way through puzzle after puzzle, the appearance of enemies is almost startling to Vark. A curse escapes his lips, a primordial word he didn’t realize he knew, and as it does there is a deafening CRACK! The air between the goblinoid warriors is wracked with thunderous force. Two of them are able to brace against the concussive blast, but the third is caught unaware and left coughing up blood as his delicate internal organs are battered.
Jex steps around into the room, as his eyes focus through the darkness, he is quick and deadly as ever in his reaction, drawing his bow and releasing an arrow through the eye of the first hobgoblin before anybody else has realised a fight is about to happen. His next arrow is ready before the body of the first has even hit the ground.
As the doors open and the group looks beyond, Seid comes up behind Jex and listens as he describes the room beyond. He quickly relays that and gathers everyone near the doors as they prepare their ambush. In rapid succession each member pops around the door and lets loose with one of their spells or weapons! Seid spins around the door and sends a fiery bolt streaking through the darkness, using the ambient light behind the hobgoblins to guide him. His aim is true, but the bolt is deflected by the heavy metal helmet worn by the hobgoblin. He mutters a curse as he sends a telepathic command to Ignatius who flaps up into the high ceiling of the room to look for a place to perch and watch.
Throughout the puzzle rooms, Bründir couldn't help but keep being drawn to the armour and shield from the second room. When he had a chance, he took the shield and looked it over. Mesmerized by its craftsmanship, the dwarf lost himself in the study of it. His hand traced over the back of it and found enchanted runes etched into the metal. Even the metal was remarkable; he'd heard of smiths who could forge rare and exotic metals, but he never dreamed to find even one thing made in such ways, let alone a full suit of armour and a pair of doors from earlier. Then there was the balance: Bründir felt as though he could take the edge and throw the shield flat across the room with ease. Such a strange thing that he wanted to study more when he left.
Study would have to wait, though. Jex's scouting reported several hobgoblins in the next room. He discarded his old, splintered shield, and took up the new metal beauty. When the doors were thrown open, he slammed Dumdrengi's guard several times on the shield's boss and charged, "Stand an' be weighed! Ye've angered a mountain with yer filth, and the Acharnost 'ave come fer ye!" A hobgoblin midway up the stairway before him reached for its weapon, but hesitated, as though stuck in indecision. "Half given's twice received, now get yer's"

Thurston charges into battle with a roar, even as Hurrig calls upon Moradin to aid them once more. An aura of golden light surrounds Bründir, the paladin, and the cleric, bestowing upon them a divine resilience and vitality. The huge Norscan warrior pounds up the stairs as he races towards his foe, and besides him a brilliant glowing hammer appears, as Hurrig summons the weapon of his God. It arcs through the air towards the wounded hobgoblin, striking true at the side of the mercenary's torso. The blow would be mortal, but for the heavy armour the hobgoblins wear. Even so, the sound of cracking ribs echoes about the vast chamber.
Hurrig casts Aid, granting +5 vigour to Bründir, Thurston and himself.
Hurrig hits a hobgoblin with Spiritual Weapon dealing 10 force damage, reduced to 4 by DR.
From his position atop the stairs, Thurston can finally see enough to get an impression of the chamber. The platform that the hobgoblins are stood atop is, in fact, a walkway atop a bounding wall, beyond which is another lowered area. The wall seems to run in a square around the entire room, which itself must be at least two hundred feet across. It's pitch black, but for periodic bubbles of light that illuminate a series of blue-robed figures at regular intervals around the inner edge of the platform. Mabinogi wizards. They appear to be concentrating on something in the centre of the room, but Thurston can't quite make it out in the darkness beyond the hobgoblins.
Seven pillars tower over the shadowy corners of the square and in the midde of the other three sides. Directly beyond the hobgoblins two further wizards appear to be preparing to descend a second staircase into the central area. The air is filled with swirling colours revolving about what ever lies ahead in the heart of the room.
Jex steps forward, seeing one hobgoblin still has some fight in him he steps up and flings 2 daggers at it from the darkness. One clatters off in the dark but the second buries itself deep in the eye of the goblinoid, and it let's out a low moan as it thuds to the ground, the hilt still facing up. We're it less dark the trickle of blood and ocular fluid would probably turn Thurston's stomach as he stands before him, luckily though it is tough to make out in the eerie green light of the room.
Seid follows behind the rush of his companions into the next room. He spots the last remaining hobgoblin that presents a current threat and recalls the failure of his firebolt spell. This time he focuses on their weaker minds which must be less hardened than their bodies. He touches two fingers to his forehead and focuses upon the hobgoblin as he speaks a word of power while a bluish glow appears in his eyes. Across the room, the same blue glow appears in the shape of a spectral spike that slams into the forehead of the hobgoblin! The creature cries out in pain as the spike penetrates easily the pathetic psychic barrier and it's brain is liquefied from the assault. As it falls to the ground, a thick greyish liquid begins to ooze from the hobgoblin's ears to the stone ground...
Bründir charges up the stairs, under Hurrig's shimmering weapon, and over the hobgoblin bodies atop the stairs. The sight of so many cultists filled him with a vengeful zeal and sudden vulnerability. Clinging to the former, Bründir raises his shield and rests his blade on top pointed at the nearest cultist in front of him. "Fittin' ye've come so far under fer yer graves!" The nearby cultist spins in surprise, and to Bründir's horror the face of Governor Quinton stares back at him.
"Never much liked ye, Quinton. I'll try not to enjoy this too much."

Vark lets a ray of frost fly at the wounded hobgoblin, but the icy beam merely crusts the warrior's chainmail with rime.

The look of surprise on Quinton's face twists into a mask of fury as he sees Bründir taunt him. The wizard utters an arcane incantation and his form dissolves into mist, only to appear thirty feet above, in mid-air. He plucks a feather from a pouch in his pocket and recants the words of a second spell, leaving him gently floating down through the darkness, surrounded by a nimbus of magical light. Then, taking advantage of his view point, Quinton plucks two final components from his spell pouch. To anyone trained in the arcane arts, the reek of sulphur betrays his intent. A bright streak flashes towards Seid from the wizard's pointing finger, and then blossoms with a low roar into an explosion of flame.

The restrained hobgoblin atop the ledge is incinerated instantly by the blast, and superficial, but painful burns welt up all across Thurston's skin and the blast knocks Jex against the wall.
By the time anyone looks to see where Quinton has gone, he's scampered away into the centre of the room, illuminating the structure in the middle. It appears to be an enormous metallic nine-pointed star. It looks adamantine, like many other things seen here.
The other wizard's form twists and blurs, until there appears to be two of him standing side-by-side. He reaches out towards Bründir and calls out words in an unknown language, but the man's cruel smile turns to dismay when he sees that the dwarf is unaffected, and he retreats to the left.
Thurston falls to his knee when the fiery blast caught them. He sees how the wizard tries to reach the center of the pit and, ignoring the pain of his burns and with his cape still in flames he stands and start running behind Quinton.
"Quinton!! " he yells and without even thinking about it he start spining Rikkazarik on his right hand, faster and faster. The head of the hammer starts to produce sparks of lighting that jumps from it to Thurston's arm and chest. With every spark that hits his skin the norscan feels how the pain from his wounds diminiss as the divine power of his God heal his wounds.
With newed vitality his pace behind the wizard fastens as it does the spinning hammer on his hand.
" You try to run now? After ruinning the lives of those who trusted you? After betraying them? to that I say NO!! "
With that he throws his hammer towards Quinton and the old dwarven weapon flies true, leaving a trace of blue lighting on its flight.
It strikes Quinton in the back with a loud crack of thunder and lighting. The wizard stumbles and groans. He looks over his shoulder to see how the hammer flies back to Thurston's open hand.
The wizards arrayed around the edges of the central pit hurry to assist their masters, many of them taking cover behind the enormous stone pillars of the chamber. Firebolts fly from all sides, illuminating the chamber in brilliant flashes of light. Thurston is struck by four and Bründir by one, but their shining suits of elven armour repel the fiery blasts.
Thurston is hit by four fire bolts for 7, 2, 3 and 5 fire damage, all reduced to 0 by DR.
Bründir is hit by one fire bolt for 3 fire damage, reduced to 0 by DR.
Hurrig jogs up behind the party and calls upon Moradin once more in a prayer of healing. Atop the platform, the glowing hammer drifts closer to the nearest wizard.
Jex pulls himself up from the fire blast as he feels Hurrig's magic begin to soothe the burns on his skin. Wanting the cover of darkness and to be away from the group he heads up the steps and breaks right, whispering at Seid as he goes past. "Take that light to the left, I need the dark."
He look let's off a shot at the wizard in front of him, but it bounces off the pillar. It serves as a distraction though and Jex us nowhere to be seen.
Seid jerks his head upwards to the strange whistling whine that appeared from above to see Quinton floating downward just as a glowing orb impacts in the middle of the group! He throws himself toward the ground in a crouch just as the explosion roars around them all and he shakes his head clear the ringing in his ears. As Jex disappears into the shadows and Thurston rushes forward, shouting for Quinton, Seid follows the Norscan as he disregards the Sarameain elf's directives.
Once at the top of the stairwell, Seid shouts his own challenge to Quinton. "Lord Mayor!" His voice drips with disgust and sarcasm. His arms and fingers move quickly in arcane gestures as they work in wide, sweeping gestures. As they sweep through the air, they begin to glow with a fiery energy as Seid uses the magic to pull the energy from the friction in the air into the pit of the palm of his hand. He thrusts his palm towards Quinton as the first ray of fire slams into Quinton's back hard and staggers him, but his clothing prevents any serious burns! The second ray clips his hip and sends him spinning... The man turns to sneer at Seid just as the third ray strikes him full in the face, burning away the flesh on one side of his face! Before Quinton could recover, Seid turns into a cloud of golden mists... and appears immediately next to Quinton. "You're not the only one who can do that, Quinton. You will pay for what you have done to these people. You are a coward and will die down here in the dark."
The blast of flame rocks Vark, but thankfully Hurrig's divine healing follows quickly. The shouts of Quinton's name spur Vark into action, and he charges up the stairs carried at the end by a a wispy cloud. Blue lightning begins to crackle around the head of his staff before it is released in a familiar arc. The bolt seems aimed to hit the mage, but at the last moment it veers to the left and slams into the paladin. "Thurston!" he calls out in despair, immediately ending the spell. Thankfully his friend doesn't seem too hurt by the attack, but Vark's frustration is evident.
The explosion from Quinton was more terrifying than any foe Bründir had faced so far. By some miracle, he saw the sailing mote in time to jerk his arm up and catch the brunt of the flames with his shield. Winded, sooty, but mostly unscathed, the dwarf charges to the stairs leading down to Quinton.
For some reason, vengeful adrenaline took hold of common sense and Bründir felt a need to hurl something before Quinton could attack again. His sword was too clunky and valuable to lose, but he felt confident that a shield was an unecessary luxury if he could just get close enough. With a mighty heave, the Karakarin sailed, but Quinton managed to evade. To both combatant's utter surprise, the shield hit a stone surface and ricocheted back. Bründir caught it as though the disk had sought his hand.
