Archie being in the first caravan takes a moment and scratches his head while he looks back and forth between the map and the fork in the road.
he calls back “Brundir and or Hurrig... what’s this sign say? I’m afraid I’m not quite the accomplished linguist Of the group.”he hops down to stretch his legs a bit.
With her massive hammer over her shoulder, Valaith strides forward while Brundir and Hurrig were engaged in some sort of conversation and examines the runestone.
She examines the dwarven runes for a moment, she grunts as she does not recognize any of the names. "We need to go west." She points in the direction and then leans down to Archie. "Ever heard of a Lord Erik? This is a marker stone of sorts, dedicated to some forces that died at Sheerclift, but the rest of worn down."
“Oh Valaith! You speak dwarves as well? Can’t say that I’ve met the man, looks like decent enough work. Everybody ready or do we want to look around a bit?!” When everyone is ready, Archibald hops in and tell the driver to go West, while pointing in the wrong direction.
"Lord Erik was a great leader. Ne'er heard much of details, but always told he fought a great evil. Good to see kings noticin' th' common man dyin' in their wars." Bründir's hand lays to rest on the antique sword's grip at his hip.

Vark strolls up alongside the group, glancing at the marker and listening to Val and Bründir explain it's meaning. Vark takes a few steps away, glancing around at the scenery.
The meagre offering of earth coating the ground at the junction is worn so thin from centuries of use that in many places the underlying stone shines through. Similarly, the runestone itself has clearly been standing here from a very long time and is of quite a different type of rock to those found locally in this region. On the eastern side of the road, the ground slopes away in the direction of Sheercleft ravine, which is known to run north from here for quite some way.
The driver Archie is sitting besides gives him an odd look and clicks to his mule, sending it plodding in the direction of Hyarantar.
The caravan trundles on west, making good time through the snowy upper reaches of the mountains. The mountains rise up tall either side of the narrow pass, evoking a feeling of claustrophobia if one thinks about it for too long. Eventually, the light begins to fade as dusk falls and night draws in, bringing with it plummeting temperatures. The end of this tight pass is still a good three hours ahead and the drivers are unsure whether to continue on through the dark or dig in for the night.
"If we can find somewhere safe and secure to pull off the main pass I feel it would be best to hold up for the night. Many of us cannot see in the darkness at all and lighting torches would only give away our position to any seeking to ambush us. It would be easier to protect against an attack here than in the passes while we are scattered."
Being used to traversing narrow mountain roads and passages, Vark knows that Val was right. he begins scanning the bleak surroundings for any potential campsite. After a few minutes, his eyes pick out what looks to be a shallow cave, partially obscured from the road by several large boulders. Vark looks around, wondering if anyone else will notice the spot and call it out. No one does, and the caravan is nearly about to pass the cave before Vark finally speaks up "Uhm... h-hey uhm w-what about that spot? Mmmaybe we could camp there?"
Archibald heats Cark speak up and starts slapping at the driver to get him to pull over. He hits are hard, but enough to pester and mess up the drivers hair and hat.
”Great eye Vark! That looks like a great spot to camp for the night.”
Archie dismounts and does an unnecessary parkour roll off of the slow moving cart. He walks over to the site and takes a look around. Lighting a torch if needed if the cave is that dark.
he also looks for a small critter to talk to. Just general sense if it’s dangerous or not.
The 'cave' is more of a rounded indent in the side of the rock wall, but it is deep enough for the travellers to huddle in, behind the moderate safety of the stopped wagons. The walls are extremely smooth, worn down by years of wind and snow.
The drivers disembark and a small campfire has soon been built in a rock circle near the middle.
Valaith will spend sometime checking the area to ensure the campsite is as secure as possible from external threats while the others get the campfire going. She recommends bringing the carts just a little closer together to prevent any but the smallest of folk from squeezing through. She also points out Little concerns such as not sitting atop the carts with the fire behind you so as not to illuminate your sillouhette and so on. Once she is satisfied, she will join the others around the fire and pullout some of her trail rations.
Vark jumps up, having been in a quiet reverie near the fire. He fiddles with the lodestone bracelet around his wrist, a focus for his arcane magic. As quietly as possible, he steps towards the noise, trying to get a better look.
Out of the darkness two shadowy figures leap at Vark, stabbing down at him with tiny daggers. He reacts just in time to dodge a deadly blow to the throat, but his mouth is badly bloodied by each. Besides him two tiny white kobolds land on the ground, their teeth bared.
(OOC - Made save for vigour damage and not direct to wounds on surprise attack. 10 damage from crit, 4 damage from hit. 10/16 wounds remaining. See minor wounds table for mouth wound mechanic.)
Vark is caught completely unaware, and he lets out a terrified shriek which shifts into a grunt of pain as daggers cut across his lips. As he tries to mutter primordial words through his bloodied mouth, a wind whips up around him. Tiny arcs of electricity jump between him and the ground and he lifts up, flying backwards out of reach of the attackers. With a surge of adrenaline, he attempts to finish the spell to send a bolt of lightning towards one of the kobolds.
Bonus: Tempestuous magic to fly back 10 ft
Action: Trying to cast with mouth injury 2, if not a 1 then attack roll for Witch Bolt: 12 Damage: 3
Archie wakes groggily at the sounds of combat, however Valaith is still in a deep sleep.
The surge of electricity hits one kobold square in the chest, and it jerks a little from the shock.
Both kobolds whip out slings as Vark flies away from them, but one fumbles his and doesn't manage to get the stone into it. The other manages to hit Vark, but the half-orc shrugs off the tiny stone like it is nothing.
Kobold Attacks: One critical fail, one hit, four damage.
Vark 1 Vigour, -3 Wounds -> 0/8 Vigour, 7/16 Wounds. Minor Wound Effect -> UNBREAKABLE: You may spend one Hit Die and regain that many Wound Points (excess becomes vigour). You regain your CON mod in vigour. +2 Vigour, +4 Wounds -> 2/8 Vigour, 11/16 Wounds
Archibald takes off his sleeping mask and looks around to see Vark and these kobolds. “What in tarnation is going on here” he yells as he reaches for the shortbow and takes a shot at one that is right next to Vark
24 for damage 7 sneak attack 3
he will then try to run over to Val and make sure she is awake/hide behind her. “your time to shine baby girl!”
Out of nowhere, a bit of green energy swirls around the half-orc and a bit of his vigour is restored. Next, there is a tiny thud and a small stone, also glowing the same green color, rattles to the ground near Vark's feet and spins for a second before stopping, the glow dying out. The most alert of the group may here a low, slow, somewhat dim witted voice call out from the darkness "hey you, that's not very nice!"
