Froskan closes the lantern, and the party sprints forward. After a round (to get outside the encircling Skulks), you follow the book’s arrow.
The nature of the Shadowfell messes with your perceptions. When you sight on a mountain that emerges from the fog, the book’s arrow moving all around leads you straight ahead.
After a few minutes, the sounds of pursuit fade away. Looking back, you see that dark... things... have swarmed around the torch Trim dropped, like moths to a light.
———
(I am assuming Jack has the book.) After half an hour, the party approaches the side of a large hill. The slope is too sheer to climb. Everyone tests their climbing skills, without success. However, Jack finds his hands passing through the hill, like it is an illusion, while the book cover pulses different colors. (Everyone else still feels unyielding solid ground.)

Trim sees Jack’s hand wave through the side of the hill, and decides, “this must be an illusion.” Steeling his willpower, he walks forward.... and mashes his face against a rocky hillside. It is real (or at least, as real as anything can be in the Shadowfell).

Reverie hums for a moment. ”Maybe I can try, ” she says, ”holding the book and climb up... Wouldn't be so bad.”
After tossing Reverie the book, Jack finds that he can lean against the hardened hillside. Reverie, in contrast, finds that her hands can pass through the side of the hill like it isn't there.
(OOC: Jack (before) and Reverie (now) could have continued walking into the hill. It was more than just their hands that could pass through the hillside. But I figured they would stop and step back, since the rest of the group is stuck outside.)
(OOC2: I just noticed that today is the first anniversary of BoboBoombang joining D&D Beyond. Congratulations! Sorry for not catching EmperorKarino and Guiltysparc this summer. Consider this a belated Huzzah to you both, as well.)

Trim does not notice anyone around.... He does notice that this particular spot is better concealed by the nearby hills and mounds than most places. But Trim does worry that no place is safe if they take too long.
There is no particular pattern to the lights. Earlier, Isk couldn't see the lights clearly enough because he was 10' away, and due to how Jack was holding it. (The lights are dim enough that you have to be closer to see them. Don't want the unfriendly neighbors in the Shadowfell to see it.)
(OOC: I realize I haven't mentioned the size of the book. It is significantly larger than a paper-back. It is an almost chest-sized sort of tome. Hard materials for the cover for protection, gilded with gold and platinum, with iron latches/clasps/locks to keep it shut. Thick enough that it has to be held up instead of grasped by the spine.
I'd say this tome is between 15 and 20 pounds. Mage Hand won't be able to transport it. It would have been easier to hand it off, but I figured Jack would playfully heave this object to Reverie.)

It is a bit difficult to get 5 heavily armed and armored figures to get a hand on this heavy tome at the same time, but after some medieval Twister moves, the party is successful.
The two people in front are both able to wave their hands through the hillside. After rotating, it seems that everyone is in the same state.
(OOC: Pass through? Or do you want to do something else first?)

(OOC: I wanted to make sure I didn't forget something.)
The group passes through 10' of solid stone and dirt before arriving at a large chamber. It is over 100' long and wide (larger than the hill you entered). There are various jeweled boxes and crystal cases on pedestals around the room. The room is well lit, with a variety of colored flames in elaborate braziers. All around the walls are symbols of Oghma (blank scroll) and runes of protection and concealment. Just to the side of your group is a 3' tall pillar with a ledger on the surface, and an ink pen resting along the top. It is open to the middle pages, which are blank except for 5 horizontal lines.
Despite the size of the room, your eyes are drawn to the pair of beings in the center, resting on 20' silk and satin pillows. They are both sphinx-es: large-sized lion bodies with wings, humanoid heads, with power and majesty equal to greater devils and angels. The gynosphinx purrs a greeting. "You are expected mortals. You are welcomed into the presence of the Stone Sages." The androsphinx roars next. "You may call me Frederick, and the lady Willimina. Step forward, announce yourselves, and sign in the visitor's ledger." They are relaxed and civil, but you are aware of the danger they pose if they chose to fight.
(OOC: The braziers around the room are acting like a Zone of Truth. As you announce your name and write your name in the ledger, you have to decide if you want to submit to the spell, or make a CHA save to resist it... You can feel that Frederick and Willimina will tell the truth, even though they may chose to omit certain details.)

Haven’t used this account in forever. Still a big fan of crawling claws.
Isk watches Trim faceplant the wall. He stifles a laugh with one hand and puts the other on Trim's shoulder.
"I'm glad you beat me to that particular indignity, Trim. Let's shine that lantern on the hill, maybe it will reveal something useful."
Do the pulsing colors of the book match any colors or lights that might be flashing around us (if there are any)? Investigation 3
Everyone except Jack feels a solid hillside.
Isk can't get a good look at the book (3). Much like Isk's hand is covering Trim's shoulder, Jack's hand is covering much of the book's cover.
