(Sorry, we had a big earthquake yeterday morning and spent most of the day without power, been a bit busy :P. Should be pretty much back to normal now, we're all fine, house is good, nothing broken at home)
(Edit: I haven't worked out the rules for the Watchful Guild. Probably like the Rangers of "Lord of the Ring" - hunting down evil away from the city, so that the common villager doesn't have to worry about monsters. As low-level new members, it would be like army service: follow orders of the higher-ups, little control on when and where you are deployed, etc. There would be adventuring, but you wouldn't get to chose which adventures.)
(Aware you may not have a good answer yet, Froskan is still going to ask since HE doesn't know that God hasn't decided on the rules for the guild yet :P)
Froskan mostly sticks to enjoying the feast and listening to the others converse, keeping his thoughts to himself until directly addressed by Bommie, though a look of embarrassment comes over him as Jack talks about him killing an ogre. "I'd like to learn more about your guild," he says. "How does it work? How much time do you spend doing guild work versus having some time to yourself to pursue your own interests? Do you have a lot of spellcasters? I'm always looking for good teachers to help me expand my magical knowledge." He grows quiet for a moment, a far-off look in his eyes. "How far does the guild range out from Nunkreet? There's some things I'd like to see that aren't likely to happen nearby..."
Bommie mulls her thoughts on the conversations out loud: "Hmm... Most of what you want will eventually require going in the city. Complicated hunting equipment will require a skilled blacksmith or church tool maker in the city. A quality map and information of the wilds, one of the city specialists. Advanced magical instructors... Spending time in the city will require money. Entering High Garden, a lot of money...
"I know of a request to get rid of some kind of monster that has attacked travelers coming from to the north. After you solve that, you can continue to Greensville, where the river empties into the bay. I'll send a note (by carrier bird) to the WG office in that village, and they can suggest another (freelance) request that involves being around the bay, or maybe even play in the ocean... That will let you see more of the Watchful Guild, and give you a little more spending money. How does that sound?"

Jack smiles at the mention of a monster and the ocean. "Heh. Well that sound like fun. I'll happily do that, long as I don't have to join the guild." (Honestly i'm surprised that Froskan likes mysteries, but isn't prodding on the whole bandit/Jack mystery)
Froskan shrugs. "Sounds good to me. Gives us another job and some more money without having to commit to joining any guild yet." He thinks for a moment. "How many guilds ARE there, anyway?"
"Why're ye asking me? If you want to come, come. I'm just accepting." Jack frowns at the beaming. Money isn't something you should be excited about, it's the experiences you make while getting it.

(Froskan) thinks for a moment. "How many guilds ARE there, anyway?"
"There are dozens of guilds, but most of them are less than 20 members. The newer guilds are more like oversized adventuring parties. You'd have to find the records keeper in the city to get an exact count of the guilds.
"The largest guild is the Iron Gate, with maybe a hundred members. They focus on protection in the city or the nearby factories and mines. The Watchful Guild is the next largest, and we tend to stay out of the city, keeping the wilds safe for travelers.
"And there will be overlap with certain churches. The followers of Helm (god of protection) compete with the Iron Gate for prime assignments. This summer, we were shorthanded for a fight in the Brokentooth Forest, so we had to ask the Mielikki church (goddess of forests) for reinforcements."

Roland Drask:Human Rogue - Lost Mine of Phandelver
(Early next morning. Af and Katrina have departed.) Bommie and a few of her aides are seeing you off. She hands you 3 rolled up parchments.
The first lists your five names, and states that you are allies (but not members) of the Watchful Guild. At the bottom is Bommie's signature, and a stamp of a falcon in flight, in silver ink. "This should make passage and receiving aid a bit easier. Just don't abuse it."
"Some traders were traveling south from Greenville, and they hid when they heard some terrible growling. Their donkeys got spooked and ran away. When the drivers found them the next day, the donkeys had been stabbed with something like long tusks, like from a wild boar but many times larger. They were mostly eaten, although other animals were also feeding on the bodies by that time. One of our guild scouts saw what he thinks killed the donkeys: a large lizard, big as a hut, with a spikey tail. He only saw it from a distance, and it got away from him, but he made a drawing." The second parchment (inside the spoiler) has the drawing. It also has detailed dimensions of the spike wound that killed the wagon animals.
"If you can track down the monster that killed the merchant's donkeys, collect its head and one of its spikes that matches the description. Bring it to the office in Greensville. Each of you will get 15 GP, and your supplies (rations, arrows, etc.) will be replenished.
"This third parchment is a map I drew of the wilderness area. You go NE 20 miles along the Road, then take the (dirt & pebble) path going north. After another 5 miles, the Brokentooth Forest will be to your west. The scout said he was near the forest's edge when he sighted the lizard-beast. When your task is done, return to that path, continue north about another 15 miles, cross the river, and you'll be at Greensville." (The map is in the next "spoiler".) "Any more questions? Good hunting!"
