He's pretty old, so he probably has heard what a basilisk is. I was wondering if de-petrification recipe was known on a folk tale / myth level similar to our current world "knowledge" about sunlight and vampires.
He's also a transmutation wizard and has natural interest in the area.
I brought up the subject of anti-petrification and basilisk bile because Petrification is something you will end up facing a few times in this module. Brewing potions and such usually falls under the domain of alchemy, but I will let you make an Arcana check, although the DC will be difficult, ie: DC 20.
In the first part of the module, the emphasis was escaping and surviving the underdark starting with nothing. You were supposed to scrounge, craft or steal everything you needed to function. The module had another layer of difficulty that I largely ignored because it was just too much to keep track of.
But now that you're all level 5 and into character Tier 2, I will no longer keep track of supplies, foraging, ammo, etc... Instead, this other mechanic that I largely ignored is going to kick in and it has to do with the mental stress imposed by the presence of Demon Lords in the Underdark. Narstin's parting gift was to clear the slate clean (and give you one possible solution) to this mechanic.
Lets say that your party and the gnomes have a good long sit down discussion about this mental stress everyone is suffering from. It seems everyone comes away understanding some of the triggers:
Encountering demons
Spending any considerable time in Faerzress (a kind of magical fog native to the underdark)
@ Dreak: Please add Grithik's Personality Traits, Ideals, Bonds and Flaws to his character sheet. I need that info to grant DM Inspiration.
@ nshrock: Please replace your Vehicles (Land) tool proficiency with something else. Doesn't make sense since you've never been to the surface. Also, replace your Common language with another, again you've never been to the surface and haven't been exposed to those who could speak Common.
Btw, Rodolfo suggested Skameros takes up the negotiations with the wererats. Either it was brushed aside as a silly joke or you guys didn't notice it :)

Pretty sure Common comes default to my race, so I will do my best to figure out how to do that to my sheet, but we may be stuck just writing in a note and understanding my proficiencies should reflect that

Tabaxi with a penchant for shenans. He will....shenan again...
Yeah, you would have to create a custom race for this. Not too difficult - you can essentially copy a deep gnome and remove the Common language, but might not be worth the hassle.
I don't know the backstory for nshrock's character. But there are always excuses to know the Common language, even if it wouldn't be generally known where his character lived.
Scholars and priests in RL often know Latin, even though it is a "dead" language. Maybe Orubis needed to read some clerical texts during his acolyte training, that were only written in Common. (Even if Orubis has never been to the surface, surface-dwellers come to the Underdark and leave behind knowledge and materials.)
If you've read the older Thor comics, Stan Lee had the gods of Asgard and other religions talk in a faux-Shakespearian style, to make them somewhat archaic and distinct from regular humans. Orubis can always speak Common with some strange style (which goes away when he uses his other languages).
Beegred Thornpost - Lvl 8 Halfling Ranger - Out of the Abyss by Kerrec Drusk - Lvl 8 Half-Orc Life Cleric - The Long Road: Dragon Heist by Mingofaust (player & current DM) Hunferho Aelorothi - Lvl 5 Half-Elf Bard/Rogue - Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus (by Pokepaladdy) DM - Frontier City of Nunkreet (ended)
Regarding the main thread... We're done with this chit-chat? A couple hours pass as you all discuss the various issues and say your goodbyes to Narstin. Then where do you go?
Yeah, Rodolfo is definitely done, pointedly not saying anything extra about their past travels.
I'm good to move forward as well, Grithik is just excited to find others to travel with and who seem to have similar goals.
Ryndar Shadowsbane - Lvl 3 Eldarin Fighter | Kassar - Lvl 2 Lizardfolk Druid (Circle of Stars) | Finnegan (Finn) Taggert - Lvl 1 Human Cleric (Peace Domain) |
Verdan Schmidt - Lvl 2 Half-Elf Bard | Grithik - Lvl 5 Deep Gnome Warlock (Celestial)
Then lets assume you all retire for a long rest before my next post.
Are you asking if Rodolfo knows what the recipe would be? Or are you asking what a Basilisk is?

I think that's why Skameros mentioned they make good stew

No, I asked nshrock to change his 'common' language to something else. But he's right, it can't be done. D&DBeyond doesn't let you customize that...
