Lia nods and purses her lips thoughtfully. " Well we have a lot of area to explore in a short amount of time.. This might require splitting up our forces some. Time is not our friend here. Is there anyone else that can help us search these tunnels Silas? "
Mari looks down at the table as she considers the situation. After a brief time she looks up at Silas. " Does Waterdeep not have sewer patrols for just this type of thing? They are so heavily protected above ground. Surely they didn't over look the tunnels. I used those tunnels many times in the past with my former employer. "
Silas grimaces, "The city doesn't like to send guards down there on a regular basis, and they have good reason. The Zhents and the gangs like to hunt the patrols down and make examples so they can keep it clear for themselves."
"We could ask Xanathar for help, he's the biggest name down there by far, and he'd enjoy what these cultists are up to no more than the rest of us. But he's also stark raving insane, he might listen, he might not. If you don't know the name, Xanathar's a beholder, one of the very few that engages with humanoid society. He and his gang are the second most powerful group in Waterdeep, after the actual lords of the city."
"We could also hunt Xanathar's group down, then tell the lords that its somewhat safer to send people in to help, but that will take time, and I don't know how much we have."
Lawrance pipes up at that "The Eye has usually been the better of the myriad gangs, cults and guilds that own the lower levels of Waterdeep. As I mentioned earlier, we should at least let the eye tyrant's representatives know what we are about and avoid issues. Also, I don't think he's actually insane. Beholder's dreams can become reality which makes the world around him rather...random. I don't think anyone would see the universe in the same way we do, if every thought you had could manifest itself. It's more like just a different viewpoint of the permanence of your surroundings."

“Can you tell me the difference between a witch and a wizard?" "Sure, a wizard is what they call you when they want to hire you, and a witch is what they call you when they're getting ready to run you out of town.” SunWolf replied ― Barbara Hambly, The Witches of Wenshar
Lia thinks for a moment. " I say we go speak with Xanathar. Hopefully we can reason with him. It is to his benefit to aid us. I do not wish to work with the Zhents after our last experience. "
Mari looks agreeable to this. " The zhents are not the most reliable to work with. Xanathar is the best option in my opinion. "
Poljen frowns. "So you suggest we ask this monster to not only allow us to hunt undisturbed, but maybe ask if he will help us?" He shrugs. "Whatever you all think is best, I will go along with."
Silas nods, "We'll want to bring a gift for his pet goldfish. The thing is his most trusted confidant and only real friend, and no to my knowledge its not a shapeshifter, possessed, enchanted, or anything other than an ordinary fish. But flattery for the fish is known to get good results from Xanathar. Lets see what we can find in the markets after setting up the meeting. Fortunately I know who to talk with."
He leads you on down to the docks, and up to an unassuming warehouse. A couple of obvious thugs watch the group warily as you approach a twisted and scarred dwarf with a ****** leg and a missing eye. Silas calls out, "Steeltoes, we need to speak with your boss, there's an intruder in the sewers that we're hunting down. Xanathar doesn't know it yet, but he has reason to task you lot with helping."
The dwarf frowns, the action making his already ugly face rather hideous, "Hmph, and even if I had a clue what you're talking about, why should I help you?"
"Well for starters, if you don't, I could tell the guard about that chest full of fake dragons you're trying not to glance at even now. I can smell the lead cores from here. The lords of this city are rather lax when it comes to your bunch, but spreading fake money around? Oh, they won't overlook that, not ever."
"Fine, fine, I'll pass a message along. Just who in the nine hells should I say is coming to call?"
"The Silver Blaze, heroes of the fight against the cult of Tiamat. Leave a message for us at the Yawning Portal with the answer."
As the group departs, Silas states, "They should respond soon enough. Xanathar's likely to be curious enough about you that I doubt he'll refuse. Now then, if you had anything you wanted to take care of before the meeting, this would be a good time."
dragons are the term for a type of gold coin minted exclusively in Waterdeep
Normally I wouldn't have rushed through that conversation, but things have been dragging as is.
Lawrence spends some time in the Inn , before a message arrives, researching and studying up on beholders and their psychology, hoping for an edge on their hopefully brief and productive meeting.

Lia smiles grimly as she knows they will meet the fearsome beholder soon. She refreshes herself and then sets up a mirror in the corner of the room. The young cleric unbraids her hair and brushes it until it shines. She eyes her perfect visage in the mirror with satisfaction. Speaking softly she communes with her goddess seeking guidance for their mission here.
Mari sits close by her friend watching her back. She tugs at her auburn braids as she is irritated at the possibility of running into Zhents once again. Thankful to be free of their control she imagines a time in the future when she can exact some sort of revenge on the organization.
Ooc: Lia adds Divination to her prepared spells. I had forgotten to prepare the full amount allowed previously.
Velon is glad to see Silas but is concerned about the toll this war is taking on his mentor. He agrees with the plan to talk to Xanathar but is unsure of what to get for a gift, wishing Perry were here to assist with such an odd quest.
The paladin inquires with Lawrance and Silas about exactly how to approach such a meeting, beyond complimenting a goldfish. He heads to the market with the others in search of inspiration for their gift.
"So, does anyone have ideas for the gift? A mate comes to mind, but surely if Xanathar wanted one for his pet he'd have one already."
Lawrance relates what information he has come into through his special channels, concluding with "I would offer something exotic and tasty from our kitchens. I'm sure we could get our excellent staff to create something suitably unique and appetizing that we can offer as a gift to influence his opinions of us. Otherwise I can't think of anything to offer his fish that he couldn't already have."

Cratol thinks for a while but can not come up with anything that a goldfish would like to have. "Bringing him some exotic food from our kitchen does sound nice but how do we keep it warm and fresh?"
"For the Xanathar, or his fish? Either way, it's a good idea. I was also just thinking, what about some large, fancy glass tank for the fish, maybe with a miniature castle inside, model of castle skyreach, even? He might already have a good tank, but we could call it a vacation home for when his regular tank is being cleaned."
OOC Want to just do a fancy tank with some cool model building inside and a delicacy for Xanathar himself as Lawrance suggested and then move on since Dai said it wasn't critical?
Silas nods as you wrap things up in the market. "A few things you should know, in case this does not go well, Beholders cast magic with a single glance of their many eyeballs, and it is not minor magical tricks either, they can turn one person to stone while dominating the mind of another, among other things. Their central eye can emit an anti magic effect, which they will target at whomever is most inconvenienced by the lack of magic, while targeting whoever remains out of the field with other effects. One strategy I have seen put to good use is to blind the central eye, and then have a few people focus on counterspelling its lesser eyes while the rest strike hard at the main body."
"I do not think it wise for me to attend the meeting. I won't be able to hide my true nature from him. I'll transform into something small and await nearby, outside of the room, so I won't be too far off. Are you ready for this?"
Lawrance, upon hearing Silas' strategy, says "Ah, I thought this was a meeting, not a melee. We don't actually intend on attacking a possibly lichified Beholder, do we?" He adds, looking at the others for reassurance. Privately, he's rather curious to finally meet such a legendary being and creature, regardless of how the meeting ends up."His main eye would be the worst for me, of course, and the distance that he can project that effect is immense. Let's not stir up trouble with him, in any plan."

Silas nods, "Violence isn't the point of this no, it would be better to gain his help. But this is a paranoid and unstable creature prone to solving percieved problems by eliminating those involved. If things do go badly it would be better to be pepared."
Lia's brow furrows in worry. " Let us hope that it does not come to combat. While our group has proven our might many times, this might be too stern of a test. Fear not though. Sune and Bahamat watch over us and guide us. We are needed to save the world from the return of Tiamat. We are not meant to die like this. Take hold of that thought and walk with confidence my friends. " She beams at the others.
"Lawrance, I too can become pretty useless quickly if all magic is taken away from me and my gear. Assuming I'll be standing right in front of the Xanathar to speak to him, any thoughts on how to avoid the anti-magic field if it goes poorly? Quickly teleporting if he gets too angry is all I've got thus far."
(Ready when you are, Dai. Just chatting...)

Velon does not look pleased at the discussion of the anti-magic field after the spell Big Red cast on him.
Regarding the Xanathar's sanity he adds "we should send Old White Death to negotiate with him. They have a lot in common."
