First thing's first! This campaign will be Grimdark. It is going to deal with a lot of character death (hopefully not any players, at least not for a few pages...), heavy imperial fuedal themes, some uncomfortable quests that deal with the sacrifice of humans, cannibalism, racial issues and related subjects that will be treated with care and gravity. It will be very dark, and at times it may be depressing. It will also be hilarious at other times! Occasionally it will be frustrating. But above all, it is designed to be challenging. Much of the world is unsafe; travel is a big deal, as is inventory management, as is every encounter. You are going to (almost) die a LOT. To contact me, please add me on discord: detective facebones#6228 (all lowercase with the space!!). If you are an experienced player, go ahead and post in the thread with your character concept and a rudimentary background, then roll for stats. Take one 18 automatically in any attribute, then 4d6 drop the lowest, roll 6 times and drop the lowest of them all. MAKE SURE YOU ROLL IN THE THREAD OR LINK ME TO AN INVISIBLE CASTLE ROLL!!! After doin' them attributes, scroll down and read the rest if ya ain't done did it already, and you're ALMOST ready to play that thar Dang'ins and Darn'ins. [[If you already have a character that's fine, too. And if you just really wanna be level one and use your already made character well then... I mean I ain't gonna stop ya lol. Just please take an 18 in one stat.]] Once you have done all that crap, make a 2nd level character using the PHB and Xanathar's if you have it. If you don't, message me on discord and I can send you the information you need. New or inexperienced players, please read the spoiler below with the additional details.
It's been a long day. Nearly twenty hours of tracking down a beast - a gryphon - only to find its lair barren for over a night's passing. Won't be collecting that bounty anytime soon. Shame, too, the extra supplies you could have bought would have made for an extra comfy snowfall. It's just as well anyway, it was about time the party made its way back south, to Cáis Faíl. You double-check for the strange stone artifact you retrieved from a rabid encampment of zealous kobold cultists. The stone tucked away safely, your party relents their hunt for the gryphon to return the parcel to your winter home, and prepare for the coming frost.
At least five days of travel await you, but there is a town not an hour to the south on your map, a hamlet called Ridington. You do not know the area very well, though most villages you've found, even the most isolated ones, honor the old Vordr pacts. Old Man Jaal's words ring in your ears: "Bein' Vordr don't make the magic we use any less mistrusted. Spare yourself a Lord's wrath and build a damn fire, ye spoiled pups!" On the one hand, it wouldn't be difficult to make camp, really - enough food to cook, some water to drink, and a fire's easy to raise in the forest. On the other hand... No ale.
A very long time ago, the world of Er was shaken down to its very core. Much of the magic left the world, and monsters began invading the realm from the deepest charnel pits, the darkest ocean crevices, and the fiercest mountains of fire. From the very ground itself, an army of darkness emerged and swallowed the world in turmoil. You live thousands of years in the aftermath, where the secrets of magic are closely guarded, kingdoms keep their gates shut, and men everywhere are left to suffer and struggle in a desperate attempt for survival. Villages mere miles from each other may have never made contact, for fear of the lurking death that awaits in every dark corner, cave, and dense woodland.
You play as a member of the Vorðr, guardians of the kingdoms of Er, who have existed since long before history can recall. Your party has been traveling together for weeks now, but you've all known each other about as long as you've all been in the order, having all been recruited only within the span of the last three to ten years. Sieged by evils from all sides, the people of Er look up to the Vordr to protect them from the ghoblins and dark spirits that plague them. Members of the order can squeak out a very handsome living traveling the plains and fighting beasts too fierce for farmers. The Vordr hold a heavily guarded keep on every continent of Er, of which there are several. Every fifty years, the Elder from each keep will meet to exchange secrets, which they guard deep within hidden vaults unknown to even some of the longest-living Vordr. As members of the order, you have undergone many mutations, and as such you live much longer than your peers of any race. Some Vordr have been around as long as a thousand years, and a Vordr dying a natural death is virtually unheard of. Culturally, they are similar to the Witchers from Andrzej Sapkowski's novels of the same name, or the Varl from Banner Saga. Similar to the Witchers, and due to their keeping of secrets that predate most known history, Vordr are generally forbidden by their own code from interfering with the political landscape. Though no punishment will befall one who breaks this code, other Vordr may look down especially harshly on one who plays the game of Court for personal gain. Of course, being so long-lived, often members of the order are lenient with passing judgment on people they've been friends with for a hundred years.

CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR 5 PLAYERS - FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE. Once the 5 slots are filled, they're filled. If one of the players drops out at any point I'll message anyone who missed it on FCFS as well. Very little experience necessary! You should have a general grasp on the basic mechanics, i.e. what an action and a bonus action are, what a rest gives you, how to perform a skill check, etc. If you are completely new to the game, discord me and we'll work something out, but still try to make a character and RP. Look at the other threads if you need an example of how to start. PLEASE TRY TO KEEP IT BALANCED. If you want to play a warrior really badly, but another player has already gone the Fighter route, try to fill another niche that the group could use. This campaign will be brutal at times, but it can only be made easier by a good balance in combat. Of course, with 5 players and 2 more joining at a later date, I understand that overlap will happen. But please try not be Merlin's Roaming Band of Wizard Apprentices.
Last spoiler I swear lol. YOUR MINI PC SHEET SHOULD PRETTY PLEASE INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING IN A SPOILER: Name: Race: Class: Attributes: (you can just do the roll here and put the actual scores on a character sheet) Background: (try to keep it relatively realistic, but you have all recently become basically beyond-mortal beings made to hunt monsters and help people for coin so a little more leniency is given here) Your Post: First come, first serve after all. No need to wait on ceremony, introduce your character... In-character! Oh don't put this in the spoiler though obvs. Good luck everyone, and let'sa havea some fun!
Name: Strife Race: kobold Class: sorcerer Attributes: 18 plus Ability scores: 18513151310 (I think we will drop that 5 lol!) Background: Strife's egg was stolen by mercenaries hired to destroy a group of kobolds that had been plaguing a nearby village. For some reason his egg had a mysterious sheen to it that sparked their curiosity. Growing up the kobold was tasked with carrying gear and cooking meals for the mercenaries and they generally enjoyed his stories and talking with him, until one day his magical abilities presented themselves. A pack of wolves attacked their encampment and in his panic he set one of the wolves on fire and managed to put three others to sleep. At that moment he was no longer treated as merely a cook and was trained and treated like an equal among the group... after that he raised through the ranks until being made a member of Vorðr.
"Well I was really hoping to see that gryphon" Strife will say with a toothy grin, examining the stone they snagged from the kobold encampment. The glow of the campfire dancing along the metalic brass scales around his pointed face. Looking at the stone he would turn it over in his clawed hand, trying to examine it from every angle. "At least we were able to stumble into that camp of crazed kobolds right? At least we didn't come all this way for nothing." The kobold will say with a grin. The majority of his face covered with a thick cloak... knowing fully well what most of the people in the land felt about his kind... and how.. he himself felt about his kind.
"Although I am not very excited about the idea, I think we need to head into town" The kobold would say to the others, Giving his hood another tug so that nearly his entire face was covered in shadow.
Name: Velima Race: Human Variant Class: Druid (Circle of the Shepherd) Attributes: 18, Ability scores: 151116121110 Background: Seclusion was the first thing Velima remembers, was her preferred state, and she believes will ultimately be her future. During childbirth, on the winter solstice, Velima's mother died causing her father to slip into a deep depression. He was inattentive, doing just enough to keep Velima alive so that she could help around the home. She spent her childhood reading, and rereading her mothers books, keeping the house clean, and waiting for her father to return from hunting or various other chores. One day however he didn't return, then another day, then a week. After 2 weeks Velima's food stores were completely drained and she was forced out into the wild to attempt survival. It was cold, harsh, and she had no skill whatsoever. Nearly starved to death, frozen, and dehydrated Velima was found by a member of the Vorðr, a Druid lady of advanced years. She took Velima in and seeing her willingness to learn and abundance of talent for the art she taught her the ways of the Druid. Velima was thankful and ultimately decided to join the Vorðr for herself, to protect those who like her couldn't protect themselves.
Background: He was part of a protective force for a minor military vault together with his team of other Warforged whose numbers ranged from 99991 to 99999 which gave them the group name Niner. After a long siege of the castle on top of the vault, the attacking monsters managed to break through. Due to their lack of combat experience, he and his friends were outmatched by the creatures storming into the room. After the attack, the castle was only a ruin of what it once was and 99997 beneath most of it. Weeks, months, maybe years went by with him being locked in position until a group of scavengers managed to dig through the rubble where they then found him. With his purpose stolen or destroyed and his friends dead, Niner, who chose to carry this name from now on in honor of his friends, went off into the world in search of a new meaning to life, finding the order of the Vorðr while doing so. The past made him very protective of those who he considers a friend and he has still some trouble interacting with creates who aren't Warforged themself.
When with close friends, Niner shows himself in his full stature. Thick silver-black armor plates cover his dark brown wooden muscles to create a massive walking armor. On his forehead he has a flaming circle engraved and similar symbols ornate his body. When moving through the world, he wears a large, dark grey cloak with silver edges to cover his body and a metal mask to hide his face even though you can still see his glowing eyes when looking closely.
Backstory: Growing up in a small town Damien had been forced to study in the temple of Silvanus during one year Damien was in the forest collecting herbs when a massive storm started to appear seemingly out of nowhere. As the storm overtook her she felt another presence. She had encountered an ancient primordial she heard a voice in her head calling her forward as she walked through the storm she started getting cuts from flying debris. After reaching the eye of the storm she was thrown out. When she woke up she had static running along her body with now shock white hair. After that she left the temple in search in of the storm again.
In a set of chainmail with a shield and warhammer Damien turns back to the group. "Shall we stop here and set up camp, I'm sure we would find more foe than friends in the town."
Exonaut and Madclergy, please update your posts to include your character sheets. Everyone else, please update your posts to include your RP!
You are mulling over your options. You have all been awake for over 20 hours and would like to rest. However, there are still 5 days of travel ahead of you. To travel a day would only tire a Vordr out, not make them incontinent; doubtful a roaming alghoblin patrol could spring a successful ambush. Your supplies number enough for another night of rest, and a full day of travel. There's a small town an hour away, but you've never been there and do not know for certain they're friendly towards your order. Niner adjusts his mask. As an arcane construct - one from a long, forgotten era - he would be unwelcome anywhere. Being Vordr simply gives a guardsman pause after raising a blade in recognition of the magic deep within his core. Strife, too, double-checks his hood at the suggestion of traveling into a town. Though he is the Vordr's monster, he is still a monster nonetheless, and a swift death by a commoner's hand awaits him if he does not keep himself disguised. Velima and Damien, both normal-seeming humans, save Damien's hair of course, consider the danger that may befall their friends from a careless traipse into an unknown town.
"Indeed, I believe returning empty handed would've been worse than just staying here until we found it" Damien stirs the fire a little before pulling out some rations
The title still says recruiting, but if you're full, I understand!
Name: Jubilant
Race: Tiefling
Class: Warlock
Attributes: 158 14 15 7 18
Background: She was raised by a violent dark cult who suspected she might be the daughter of the demon they worshipped, Bharash. She grew up in almost complete seclusion until she was 19, when she finally decided she would rather risk her life escaping than stay any longer. She grabbed what money and supplies she could before fleeing the cult, although the demonic contract that granted her powers from Bharash seemed inescapable. She spent some time on the streets as a beggar, and adopted a stray calico cat named Posie to keep her company. Eventually, she joined the Vordr in the hopes that the regular traveling would keep her far out of sight of the cult so she could start a new life.
"I'd prefer heading back to town," Jubilant said, picking a stray leaf from the tip of her horn. Maybe it wasn't fair for her to say, since she could so easily cast disguise self, well others in the party couldn't. But even if she was familiar with nights out in the open, she wasn't fond of them. "But if we camp out, I can get started on a fire. No point in going cold."
(also I didn't see the DM's post, I will enable sharing and then modify the post. Is there a campaign I can join so I can enable sharing? Added RP to original post)
Just so everyone knows, I'm running the game based on the basic rules. I'd love to enable sharing, but unfortunately I own all my material (from 1st onward) in hardcover format, so it's impossible for me to link material from my supplements on the site since they're physical copies I get at my comic book shop and not digital D&D+ purchases. If anyone knows how to enable at least basic sharing please PM me, I am brand new to D&D Beyond and while I have years and years of DMXP, it doesn't always exactly translate directly to digital systems. I would love to use all the tools available on the forum! I just do not know how. If I need to look anything up from something like Strahd or SCAG, please just let me know the page number and publication I can find it in, if I don't own it I can just walk around the corner to my comic shop and read what I need to.
With all that being said, Artemis you are the final member of the current crew, and the game is now started! I have a D&D discord server I use to keep my players up-to-date, but if everyone would like we can also use an OOC thread.
Jubilant strokes her cat, Poise, who has grown restless standing in the midst of the dark forests where your tracking efforts proved not-so-fruitful. The trees creak and whine with the wind, their bare branches blocking what very little sun remains in the sky. The dry, dead leaves kick up a slight flurry, carrying a chill that seems to beckon the season's changing. In the distance, a small critter can be heard rustling through the brown-and-grey blanket of the forest ground. Poise's ears perk up as she notices the softly chirping creature, her senses in tune with that of a Vordr.
(To clarify, you all have just found the gryphon nest and found it empty. You haven't decided yet whether to make a camp or keep traveling, or head to Ridington. It seems though that 2 of the party have made the decision to start a fire, however, so we'll go with that. KEEP IN MIND that your rations work on a day system. It is assumed that a day of rations is enough to feed the entire party for a day, and you all currently have one day's rations starting now. 24 hours from now, your characters will be without food.)
(OOC:That link doesn't seem to work for me, also as I said I have all the source material on dnd beyond, so if we enable content sharing you should be able to view everything)
(I also cannot use that link to the campaign, and I also have all the books so if I enable sharing you would have access to all the DM books and materials to use or not use at your discretion :D )
( Sorry!!!! Wrong link!!!! here's the right one: https://ddb.ac/campaigns/join/3082461296394411 also, thank you all very much, I appreciate your understanding while we get this working. I haven't run a PBP in years, and the last time I did it was over just plain ol' PHB. )
Facing only a few weeks' journey round trip completing Elder Jaal's mission, the party set out from Cais Fail with very little in tow. Travel took a couple days longer than expected, and unfortunately that gryphon would provide no sustinence for the party tonight. Facing the last of your rations, you look over one final day's worth of salted meats and unleavened bread before picking out a small meal for yourself. Damien sits hovering over her dinner in her lap, stoking the fire that Jubilant took the initiative to build. Niner rests slightly away from the food and fire, needing not to eat, sleep, or derive warmth and chill. Instead, he pulls out his waterskin and consumes a crude, black sludge. Strife looks over the kobold stone, running his fingers along its fine carvings and runic depictions.
Jubilant and Strife seem to concur: heading into town might prove a beneficial move to the party, with little food left to sustain the group. Niner seems to concern himself more with the fact that danger may await this town - it is not known to the Vordr group whose fealty Ridington claims. If they are a vassal of the Mad King or the Emperor, then the Vordr themselves surely won't be granted a warm welcome. What's worse - Niner is an arcane construct, and Strife a kobold. In a world where magic is seen as monstrous, and monsters are seen as a plague to be purged and guarded against at all cost, being a magic-monster monster hunter is among the least safe things one can be.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Strife will move closer to the fire to warm himself before looking at the stone again and attempting to see if it is magic in anyway, fliping it around in his bronze scaled hands
Strife turns the stone dial around in his hands, intensely studying its every detail. You know this artifact, though its purpose is entirely unclear to you. You recall that your own tribe had a larger dial similar to this one, which the pack worshipped as an idol. If this device is indeed magical, it makes none of its secrets known to you. Perhaps it detects that you have turned against your own kind? In any case, it is a curiosity to be certain.

(I can enable content sharing if needed, lvl 2 I believe)
(If you can enable it I have all the sources)
"Indeed, I believe returning empty handed would've been worse than just staying here until we found it" Damien stirs the fire a little before pulling out some rations
The title still says recruiting, but if you're full, I understand!
Name: Jubilant
Race: Tiefling
Class: Warlock
Attributes: 15 8 14 15 7 18

Strife will move closer to the fire to warm himself before looking at the stone again and attempting to see if it is magic in anyway, fliping it around in his bronze scaled hands
(arcana 23)
Strife turns the stone dial around in his hands, intensely studying its every detail. You know this artifact, though its purpose is entirely unclear to you. You recall that your own tribe had a larger dial similar to this one, which the pack worshipped as an idol. If this device is indeed magical, it makes none of its secrets known to you. Perhaps it detects that you have turned against your own kind? In any case, it is a curiosity to be certain.
