There are bolts in the area that don't match anything you guys are carrying so you figure there were others involved. There aren't any other corpses. You do see a couple old footprints that have survived in the mud but you can't really tell much about them other than they are medium sized humanoid.
"Well, I think we know what killed us. I'm not sure what ultimately killed the snake unless we inflicted fatal wounds on it before we died. But perhaps someone in town might know. And might know what we were doing here in the first place."
Jim, after taking a moment to collect yourself you continue your investigation of the corpse and find that Tim suffered wounds prior to the snake eating him. Slashes. You also find a pouch containing 18 gold and a folded piece of paper.
Lorros, while you do find other tracks of small animals and a couple other footprints there's not enough left over to determine any kind of trail.
"Might I suggest we head to Rosedale? From what the old man told us, the road between the towns should be a little way to the east of here, and since we headed north from where he left us, it makes sense to me to continue in that direction."
Tormir points in a north easterly direction, aiming to meet the road and turn northwards on it if the others agree.
I'll just spoiler it. Some stuff I do PM but this isn't so sensitive
It's a receipt dated from 3 weeks ago for a book loaned from "School of Pfaltz Arcana" to Tim Goodman. Unfortunately the note has suffered some damage from digestive juices and you can't make out the name of the book.
So here's how I worked this last time I ran this campaign. The first day back anyone trying to specifically recall something it's a DC25 History check (on yourself) Everyday that goes by that drops by 5 until either you've already figured out what's happened or it hits 0 and I'll tell you if there's something you still can't recall or haven't figured out yet. For specific things like seeing a dead friend I won't ask for a check. You'll get a flash memory. For running into someone on the street who maybe you traded with a couple times you'll get advantage on the check.
Jim I think you're the only one who would be able to recall this right now but you''ll need a nat 20.
(Also just as an aside. JIm I think you would be the most troubled by not being able to remember something. Studying is an integral part of life. You know you're smart and would be deeply troubled if there was something specific you couldn't remember. Just for some RP flavor :)
Jim, It feels like there's an image on the tip of your mind. Like a dream you know you had but can't recall. You do know there's schools in Diepfaltz and you're sure you should know about the schools there, you just can't seem to remember any specifics.
"South it is then." Lorros gathers up the corpse of Tim to carry him out of the swamp. In doing so he looks at the wounds he suffered prior to the snake ingesting him. (Do they look to be inflicted by weapons or animals. Not sure if that would kind of roll that would be, Survival/Nature/Investigation?)

Lorros walks over to Jim and places a hand on his shoulder, shakes his head and moves around the other side of the snake to look for other tracks.

Lorros turns to Jim "We should give him a proper burial, but not in this swamp. I'll carry him out for you if you'd like."

RavenloftAnnihilationAfter a moment Jim looks up and, meeting Lorros’ eyes, he nods solemnly in agreement.
Jim looks back to the parchment he found and inspects it.
(Brian, do you need to PM me the contents?)

Jim reads the note to all.
Jim tries to recall where the School is located.

"School of where? Was one of the towns not called something like that?"

RavenloftAnnihilationJim has a look of frustration which turns to anger as he tries to recollect the information. He should know this!

“AARGH! This is ridiculous. My mind is a vault! I certainly hope this amnesia is not permanent.
Let’s it’s head to the nearest town... whatever its name is.”

"Jim? Where do you want to go? South? To Diepfaltz?"
Mordekai | Tiefling Warlock/Bard (Lv.12) | Pizazz's Beyond
RavenloftAnnihilation“Yes. I have hazy memories of there. Certainly the note at least pertains to it.”
Jim sighs.
”It’s a start...”
Freyalise "I think heading South would be best".
Turns towards Jim "Shame you can't remember, must be very annoying. I think if I was in your position I would either burst into tears or slap a dwarf"
(slap a dwarf! lol!)

Tormir balls his fists, ready to punch Jim full in the face if he so much as thinks about slapping a dwarf...
