With a cough and a sputter Rhomorn decides now is not the time for heroism (or rather martyrdom!) and decides to join the rest of the patrons, climbing out of the window. "You are right friend! This is not for us!"
OOC Hah funny I typed Dex then hit the roll button and the text says "Dex checks are not yet available . . .some thing something" hit enter and it was fine. . will be automated soon. . nice.
Once the others have made their way out the window, you both clamber through the opening. Rhomorn stumbles slightly on the way out, but otherwise it's a fairly easy climb.
You circle around to the front of the building and see that the patrons are being helped by other members of the watch. Other individuals have formed a chain and are passing buckets of water up the line and empty buckets down the line, towards a well.
Ogden, the owner of the establishment, is hopping from one foot to the other, screaming incoherently with his hands held in his hands.
Before you can decide what to do next, a halfling wearing a wide brimmed hat, who had been scurrying around the crowd examining people's faces, spots you and rushes over and hands you a note, "Message for you!"
Without waiting for a reply or acknowledgement, he speeds off and disappears back into the crowd.
When you open it, you see that it's from the festival organizers asking you to investigate reports of someone causing a ruckus in front of the nearby arcane library.
Holding the note so both can see, Zailoth comments, "Seems we are done here?" The words 'arcane' and 'library' have him somewhat excited although he expects to find a rampaging crab. Wating for Rhomorn's reply Zailoth scribbles some notes in his book about the Octopus ready to follow, behind, his large partner.
Torn between feeling like he is abandoning his post, and feeling duty to uphold these new summons, Rhomorn eventually nods in agreement. "Seems that way! Onwards!"
Leaving the chaos at the inn behind, you head off to the direction that the messenger indicated when he gave you the message. You soon arrive at your destination.
Standing outside of the nearby arcane library is a middle aged man wearing wizard robes. He’s flailing about wildly, trying to get the attention of anyone he can, while speaking incoherently. Most passersby rush past him nervously.
Realizing that likely the only thing he has to offer is calm, and seeing that it is a fellow mage, Zailoth heads toward the man even paced and keeping eye contact if possible. If he is able to approach within a reasonable distance for conversation without being shouted at he will introduce himself, "Greetings, you seem to need assistance". . . . short and sweet.
Rhomorn follows his friend up to the mage. As Zailoth speaks to the man, Rhomorn takes a look around the front of the building to see if anything out of the ordinary jumps out at him.
When Zailoth gets close to the man, an elf actually, he frantically grabs hold of the front of his shirt and jabbers wildly, occasionally pointing back towards the library.
When he doesn't see any comprehension on Zailoth's face, he slides to the ground sobbing.
Zailoth gives the elf a resigned look, pats him on the shoulder and begins to head toward the library, keeping his eye out for any signs of bad magical things.
Rhomorn takes a look around but besides the blathering elf, and the odd looks from people passing by, doesn't notice anything amiss.
(sorry, missed this from my previous post)
Leaving the sorry elf in a blubbering heap on the steps, you go through the library's front entrance.
The building itself is a large, standalone rectangle structure. Inside, the library is brightly lit by oil lamps and large overhead chandeliers. Marble floors stretch out into the library. There is a reading desk on either side of the main entrance. Sitting at each desk is a human male that is apparently asleep, their foreheads planted firmly on books they were reading. A long bookshelf spans almost the entire width of the room, blocking the view of the rest of the room.
As you are looking at the sleeping patrons, some movement catches your eyes.
Near the center of the large open room, above the bookshelf, you see a flapping open book hovering in the air.
Seeing the floating book Rhomorn turns to his friend, "You have any idea what that might be?" Rhomorn is much more familiar with matters of the sword and shield than he is with matters of the arcane. Not wanting to make a misstep, he looks around the room for any indications as to what might have put the patrons to sleep: 4
Zailoth approaches the book to see what type of text is on the pages. . he isn't likely to be able to avoid looking directly at it but he will try to steel himself to any magical force that may come from the book.

By the time Zailoth turns his attention back to the kitchen, most of the other patrons are already out the window.
Smoke begins to fill the common room, and wisps start to snake into the kitchen area.
The air becomes hazy and the smell of smoke fills your nostrils.

Dex for climbing out the window: 3
OOC: Crap...
Zailoth takes the next available chance to leave.

Rhomorn doesn't see anything else out of the ordinary...not that there was any more need of weird events.
Zailoth studies the book without moving toward it: (Arcana Check 18 )
Seeing the sleeping patrons, he attempts to deduce what could have happened to them. . with the primary assumption being magic and the book.
(Here is an additional investigation check) 22
If he is uncertain what has put them to sleep he will check to see that they are indeed still alive.
The book appears to be a magically animated object. The patrons' resting state is likely, too, magically related.
The book remains hovering where it is, for now.
Zailoth approaches the book to see what type of text is on the pages. . he isn't likely to be able to avoid looking directly at it but he will try to steel himself to any magical force that may come from the book.
