Accepting Zein's words as a free-er pass, Nin goes over to help with the cleanup. And by help, he actually just picks up what looked solid enough to still be eatable, and downed it happily before finding his resting spot. Ka, in the meanwhile, kept Wonder silent company; who had in turn in her increasing worry looted Zein's bag for a pan flute. No matter how good or bad she played it(Pan Flute: 5), the girl wouldn't stop until fatigue eventually claimed her. Still, her rest was anything but truly restful...
Guss, after aiding in the clean-up and eventual dismantle of the tables, sees the change in the sky. Unnerved, he spends the remainder of the day away from others in the dome, and quietly meditates on it.
---
Later on that evening with Zein...
While Gustav had put up some token effort to keep hidden from the wildlife, Zein eventually discovers him sitting on a low-hanging branch with his back to the paladin. Or perhaps having heard his approach, the bit of noise of a fallen rock in the tabaxi's direction had been a ploy to draw attention? Either which way, even without looking back he responds to the hail with a half-hearted and blind wave back. As the story progresses though he eventually turns around fully in his seat to respectfully listen, yet kept the distance.
Aside from bushy brows knit together at the mention of 'friend', Gustav's expression changes little throughout it. Not that Zein could see clearly anyhow until his offering of the list led to dropping down before the paladin. "... Neither of your apologies were necessary. Wisdom guided your actions... for the most part."He says casually at first, then narrows his eyes at the end, remembering the Zone of Truth. Granted, he could've at least tried to resist its effects... but had not, for one reason or another. He smirks a moment later to assuage the paladin, though got no further friendlier than that.
"I would otherwise abstain from any "forceful" attempts to provide further succor with her than words. Young ones can be quiet stubborn and surprisingly easily attached to things... Even gifts of cruelty."Gustav promptly raises a hand to halt any attempt of interruption or correction. "It matters not the guiding hand to events in the end. They have happened, and we must all learn to live with it. To preserver, eventually."He states firmly, and clearly -- even if unspoken -- the deterioration of things lying on his head.
"I will guide you back to the dome. But I feel it best that I find my rest out here until morning. For everyone sake. Know, however, that I won't be far if a need arises for my aid." After Zein has been taken care of, Gustav makes his way back to his perch and higher still. In place of the usual symbols that accompanied his prayers, he copied the list into his prayer book alongside some additional notes. The act alone brings some solace to the old spirit. Not by much. But it is enough to find a measure of peaceful slumber should nightmares not find him.
---- (The part more actually revelant to the group :P)
Gustav is the last to arrive at the table in the morning. Or a close second if he found Viola on the way back. He looked rough for ware, but perked up at the sight of food. If he heard any of Burgee's words the previous day, it doesn't show. His hesitance to immediately sit and dig in could be construed as an after effect. Even when Wonder -- who despite her own tiredness -- rushed over holding up a piece of meat, he just looks down at her until the offering is lowered out of awkwardness. Only once everyone else got out the way any pressing concerns or confrontations regarding him did he sit with a confused Wonder at his side.

And if its clear people just want to move on, he will sit, eat, and listen, restating a previous desire for the jungle path. Short of being "allowed" to remain near the Cracklestep home until people finish any business in the City, he will merely point out having to wait for the cracklesteps for the marking procedure. "I know that trusting people so readily is bad," Era says quietly to Burgee, remembering how she trusted that ships crew til they turned on them and poisoned their food. "But... My mom's always told me that everyone has a little good in them." She frowns a bit as she mentions her mother. "They seemed to have similar goals in mind, I don't see why they would do us any harm especially since we out numbered them. I just... I wish I knew what caused Gustav to act out like that." Her lips thinned in thought of the elder tabaxi. He was such an enigma to the genasi, she had no clue how to really read him, but she did hope that in time she would understand him better. If I ask will he answer me? "Thank you, Burgee," Era manages a small smile. "Let's clean this mess up."
Just as the duo cleaned up what they could Zein had approached them and gave them encouraging words, and all Era could really muster up was a thank you along with a, "I hope your God is right."
--
During breakfast, Era could be seen with her elbow on the table, resting her head on her hand as she stared down at a cut apple slice, stabbing the poor fruit with her fork. When Gustav made his presence known, it took a lot of willpower for Era to pay him no mind until she told herself '**** it' and decided to get it over with, better now than in a near death experience. She raised her head from her hand a moment, only to rest her chin on it and stare directly at Gustav. She only hoped Vola still around. Maybe he would apologize. "So what was that the day before?"

"Normally, this is where I respond with a 'Can you be more specific'?" Is Gustav's calm response. "But this is not a 'normal' circumstance. Is it?" He glances over to the others to see if they wished to interject before looking back to Era. "I stand by my explanation the previous day, in that it was demonstration. A cruel one by most sensibilities, but necessary one. Much as I would prefer to play the background actor in any venture, I've seen far too many people perish due to laboring under certain delusions. Both about reality, and themselves. So, better to be hated, disliked, or even mildly distrusted once, then... to see it all happen again." He says, conveying it all in a carefree tone. "At least then when I'm inevitably left to die or to suffer as a result, I leave with the peace of mind of having for once knowing I truly did everything I could to aid my comrades."
The casual smile he worth throughout the last end turns to a frown as he narrows his eyes at Era. He opens his mouth to say something, pauses at the look in Wonder's eyes, then with a sigh slumps back a bit. "I will not ask for forgiveness. Nor will I apologize. One is... undeserved, and the other would be hollow words. Know you need not fear any other demonstrations in the future, as I believe I've more than made my point."
The lone slice of bacon on the table knows nothing of the tensions around the table, of what went before - for the party or indeed itself. It does not remember being cured, nor carved. It's almost as if it came into being as a perfectly cooked and crisped slice. It certainly has no memory of being a heavily armed humongous half orc with blades strapped to its head, fists and feet waiting for someone to bite into them so they can tear them apart from the inside.
Bacon doesn't pray. There's no bacon god to hear their prayers. Should a rasher ever have cause to entreat with extra-planar powers to ensure that the cat guy isn't a vegetarian, those pleas would go unanswered.
Bacon doesn't sweat. And before you say it, no that's not sweat, that's rendered fat. You can't accidentally set your grill on fire with sweat! But if bacon *could* sweat, this slice would be leaking like a hole in the Lusitania, because the clock was ticking, and it had already ticked a whole lot.
Bacon doesn't travel. Not alone. But if it did it would be headed to the Jungle
Zein watched the goings on around the table. It seemed that what had happened yesterday was a fluke perhaps. Just the sum of built up tensions releasing themselves perhaps. And for that he seemed glad. Zein ate the breakfast the Gnomes had left eagerly, he was starving. His morning prayers always delaying his more physical needs. But once more, He was in full armor. It seemed as though the man might sleep in it.. at-least when outside the walls. The morning was relatively cool, as the sea-breeze wafted in. The sounds mixed of nearby birds and distant cries of featherless ones. Another roar echoing through the Jungle, sounding very much like one they had heard earlier. Finally Zein broke into the conversation Well, it seems we've all just about had our fills. I'd suggest we get moving soon then. It appears the consensus is to abandon the city and head north. Since we're already on this side of the wall I assume you would rather avoid the patrols around the cities edge. So I say we strike out Northwest, and head towards the small town in that direction.
Though I suppose I should have one of you choose the way aside from this, and for that, I vote that Gustav take the lead in choosing our exact path. I may be a native to the island, but it would do better if I was aware of the dangers around us, while leaving the trailblazing to another. If no one has any objections or wishes to vote otherwise of course. (That as well as the fact that I'm the DM if i choose the path.. yeah..)
With that Zein gathers his stuff, the other stuff having been given out the night before or this morning as per Mehmens post. All the NPC's and players are fully geared, and supplied. Your NPC's if applicable have at least 5 days of rations each.
There is nothing of any real value in the Cracklestave home, and the spiders will still leave you alone. You can scrounge for things, just be specific like food, or spell components as you go. And only once per day.
Once the group is about to leave, Zeing would reach for the odd piece of bacon on the table, figuring it best not to let food spoil, and takes a bite into it.
"No, no,you you we right to trust Era," Burgee replies. "Your hope inspires me. I spent to much time on my own, abandoned. You have taught me to trust again, and for that I thank you. But my first instinct is always caution." He looks over at Gustav and shakes his head as he whispers to Era, "Well, I could've behaved worse I guess." He eats little but enough to carry him through the day.
As the discussion turns to the path through the jungle, he thinks back on his lonesome voyage through that dark forest after his incident. The things he'd encountered there still haunted him. The old lady helped him to lay those nightmares to rest. The things he had to do to survive. But this place... it was picking at the lock. Calm, he told himself. He grabbed a handful of fruit and walked outside in search of Kauil. He found the flightless paladin deep in prayer and he sat and watched as the peace flowed back in.

As the paladin's strong, flossed choppers sink into the springy, salty meat the spell is broken. "Graaaaaaagh!" Vola cries, swinging her daggers threateningly. This proves harder than expected since he's chewing on her left hand, and her enthusiasm drains swiftly as she recognises that she's back in the gnome homestead rather than inside a digestive tract, and the chewer is not the target anyway. All in all the second worst use of a polymeal spell in her short career of becoming food.
"Surprise...?" She offers sheepishly as she attempts to extricate her hand from her consumer's maw.

"Not to mention if something does prove hungry, I'll make a decent distracting snack." Gustav said so casually that it is hard to tell if it was in jest or not. The half-smile soon after failed to make things any clearer. But regardless, he puts forward no complaints, and merely suggests for Nin, Guss, and Ka to cover the groups flanks. A task only Nin puts up any half-hearted guff at first before a shin kick from Wonder prompts a grumbling fine out of the rotund bugbear. Satisfied, she tries take up her customer perch on the aged Tabaxi's back afterwards, only to be rebuffed by a hand and a few stern words in Elvish.
"You have quite the talent for magic, Miss Vola. Enough to perhaps get you through to and through the city if wished." Gustav said, appearing wholly un-surprised by the once bacon turned Half-Orc. "But considering that you are here, and assuming had not been left behind as some ploy of "friend" from before, safe to assume you'll be joining us, yes? If so, welcome aboard, and no hard feelings?"He said, but doesn't linger on the question for long before looking around for Truk. It is for the first time that genuine worry crosses the Tabaxi's face as the dream plays back in mind. "Its.. its fine. Probably left with them after... It's fine."He mutters, brushing his face as if to comb away the worry from it.

"Magic? All I need to walk through town is to not look like a child's plaything that got beaten over the head by the puberty stick. It's not a talent, 'friend', just breeding. But sure - no hard feelings. Feelings get in the way of decisions. Feelings drive impulsive action. And we wouldn't want anyone doing anything impulsive or ill-advised would we?" She smiles a big tusky smile but try as she might she cannot get that residual salty tang out of her mouth.
Despite Era's want to go over the table and smack the tabaxi silly ("cAn YoU bE mOrE sPeCiFiC?" You know what I'm referring to you old jerk!), she listened to his explanation, the whole time matching his gaze with hers as her hands played with the fabric of her pants, not interested in food anymore. Normally, her face would contort in the emotion she was feeling, but there was no emotion, she kept herself steel faced and tight lipped, a complete 180 difference from the normal Era. Of course, what was running her mind was a different story, and it would continue on even as he finished.
She only replied with a, "Very well," and excused herself from the table.
Bacon panic:
The gensai only blinked at the bacon turned half-orc, her eyes going to Vola to Minos, leaning into him a bit and whispering, "Can you do that?"
The hulking figure leaned down to answer her question. "No, not yet... I could learn a thing or two from her though..."
She nods and brought her gaze back upon Vola. "So... You wanna come with us?" Her tone is almost hopeful, but doesn't sound as enthusiastic as she normally would at the chance of being rejected.

Although Guss at least watches her leave, an Gustav returned to the meal almost immediately, unbothered or at least appear un-overly concerned over events.
After the Bacon Incident:
Gustav focuses back on Vola, quirking a bushy brow. "Possibly. There are pros and cons to everything. So ultimately, one must make their own judgement, and accept the consequences of those actions. At least if they are to be at peace in one fashion." He replied, returning the smile with a disturbingly cheery one of his own. Aside from saying as much, he was as ready to go after checking over the map one last time.

"...oh are you talking to me? I couldn't tell because I wasn't being stabbed or bludgeoned. Want is too small a word, sweetie. This is destiny! Big dangerous destiny."
(Sorry for the delay guys, ive been packing. May as well use this chance to say I will be moving soonish. on the 17th or 19th. Not sure f/when i'll get my net back and I will include truk later, in case mehmens worried hes just 'gone')
Zein had been surprised when his last bite became something orcish but not quite so. But it did not take him long to realize more or less what had happened, having been an adventurer and crusader he had seen many things - and with a bow, offering his apologies to Vola You will have to forgive me lady Vola. I was unaware that was you... Though the next time you choose to cast an illusion or transfiguration spell.. perhaps choose something less edible? As becoming food in a starving jungle is liable to get you eaten, and not every creature in this jungle has a maw as small as mine own. and next time, even post transformation you may be surrounded by much more dangerous teeth than my own. You should consider that next time friend! But I am glad it seems like everyone is mostly getting along. Now, Hands. He says, putting his hands out like an X, right hand facing left, and vice versa. Hoping his intent was clear that everyone should hold hands in this fashion in a circle, to form a pact of sorts.
Once everyone who was willing to did so, he would say Oh Lathander, lord of the morning, and the Rising sun, please bless our journey, and let those who join me in my cause be rewarded with all they deserve, in bounty. Watch our steps and guide our path lest we stumble and become lost. Ai-en.
An hour later, after everyone has had time to pack/get ready etc.
Zein would sigh, neutrally. He was tense, he was excited.. not for adventure but at the prospect he might find his lost lover. Might be able to save those who were taken. His only regret being - that while he's gone, there was no one to save the slaves.... but as much as that pained him, he had to think about himself sometime. He was human afterall. With that, and Gustav having chosen the path to forge ahead, he would gather the group and begin walking as soon as everyone was ready for the road. By now the temperature was rising, but a constant breeze blowing in from the sea kept it cool, it was actually rather comfortable today. Though Burgee could sense it portended another storm soon.
As the group exits the safety of the spider dome, the Jungle opened up. Cries were heard in the distance.. panicked? even the once mighty Rex roars that occasionally permeated the forest were silent for far too long as the group walked the path that Gustav had chosen. Honestly Zein wasn't quite sure why he picked this way, but it was also unknown what was there and who knows.. maybe going somewhere unexpected would lead to unexpected answers. The sky seemed a bit dimmer though, than it should be for this time of day. Like a layer of shadow was cast over the light like a pall. It was several hours into the walk an overwhelming sense of dread crept into the parties being, the jungle seemed more close that it was. When a massive shadow passed over the group, massive enough to put a fleet of Aishships to shame with it's sheer size. (DC 10 active perception to see what it was)
if you passed -
Overhead for a mere moment, you see the gargantuan form of a white dragon fly overhead, its features only just visible through the tree's to determine what it was, but it's size was far greater than even an ancient dragon of any color.
the shadow seemed to be heading towards the city, with any doubts of it's course being belayed as the city walls, still visible even from here, made a loud crash, as the dragon rammed through the outer wall, sending debris, and shrapnel flying everywhere. It was too far away to hear the panic and screams likely beginning but even from this distance, as if thaumaturgically enhanced, a warning bell rose up, just before flashes of magic erupted in the sky nearby.
Unless openly questioned about the course, Gustav volunteers nothing on it. Not out of reticence or further cruelty, but simply out of pure desire to stay focused and on the look out for any danger. A focus that would serve him well later... although he may come to regret it to some extent. Ka is equally watchful from the back where Nin failed to be as much. The eeriness of the day wore on him the same as it did his brother. Neither voice it. Yet. Eager, for all her desire to try to be on guard kept looking towards Gustav whenever his visible. After a while, she climbs onto Nin's back just for a better view, and to hide her worries.
Gustav freezes as the shadow passes overhead. Although faint a memory arose, prompting him to at least look back at the source, and confirm. What he sees is enough to leave fur standing on end. Yet realizing quickly after its destination, the aged Tabaxi breathed a LITTLE easier and turned back to the original path. He would continue to ponder over it, considering its lineage and what one of such size might be doing so far from a clear terrain disadvantage given its coating. In whispers he even appears to talk to himself, beseeching his god for clarity. Of it however, he says nothing. Not until the bells began ringing a warning that could heard clear across the jungle.
"For better or worse, it seems we avoided catastrophe."He said mysterious to some until they too looked back. Stopping only if he hears others stop, he glances back and over to Zein and the rests. "Not sure if your Lathander has a sense of humor, or there's another player involved given the timing. But I do not suppose any of you have plans to go running back there to try and help?"He asks calmly even as the dragon no doubt took a devastating swipe at a section of the city.

As the group comes out of dome, Burgee taps Kauil to bring him from his prayers. "We're heading through the forest," he says to the priest. He looks over at Era and Minos adding, "Stick tight with me and these two. Era is to be trusted, she's been a friend for a long time and never has she failed me." Burgee pats Era on the shoulder as he says to her, "And her sense of hope is contagious," as a smile comes to his face. "Keep us strong and focused lass, you're the good in the world."
As Burgee is talking to Era, he feels the shadow pass and notices a change in Gustav's demeanor, but notices nothing unusual. "That one seems a little skiddish," he notes to those around him and is about to continue on with the conversation when Gustav begins talking about an avoided catastrophe. (Perception: 7)
"What?" Burgee asks, as he begins to focus and look up again at the shadow. "What was it you saw? What catastrophe?" And as he looks back toward the city, he notices something not quite right. "What was that!?"
"Yay~" Era clasps her hands together with a genuine smile after hearing Vola agreeing to go on this adventure with them. "Dangerous destiny indeed~! But we have each other so that's not too bad I think!"
After packing the necessities for such a trip, Era practically bounced out of the dome with Minos slowly trudging behind her, the genasi seemingly forgetting what happened the other day and at breakfast that morning. She grinned down at Burgee and Kauil as they continued forward on the path. "Everyone needs a little boost of positivity in their life, especially after all we've been through," She gives a worried glance over to Kauil, her face going more serious. "You and Burgee will fly again, I promise that."

Era barely noticed it, first thinking nothing of said shadow until her three last brain cells worked together to yell at her and say it was most definitely a dragon you idiot! Light blue hues darted to the others, wondering if they all saw that too. It was clear Burgee didn't but Gustav did, and Minos was none the wiser. "Ah, Gustav is right... That was a dragon just over head Burgee, big and white." She looks back towards where the dragon flew and winces at the sound of its body crashing into the walls. "We did avoid that catastrophe. I'm sure they can handle it... Right, Zein?"

I need to post more but cant, so will wait 1 day.

If so, welcome aboard, and no hard feelings?" He said, but doesn't linger on the question for long before looking around for Truk. It is for the first time that genuine worry crosses the Tabaxi's face as the dream plays back in mind. "Its.. its fine. Probably left with them after... It's fine." He mutters, brushing his face as if to comb away the worry from it.

But sure - no hard feelings. Feelings get in the way of decisions. Feelings drive impulsive action. And we wouldn't want anyone doing anything impulsive or ill-advised would we?" Breakfast Club:

"For better or worse, it seems we avoided catastrophe." He said mysterious to some until they too looked back. Stopping only if he hears others stop, he glances back and over to Zein and the rests. "Not sure if your Lathander has a sense of humor, or there's another player involved given the timing. But I do not suppose any of you have plans to go running back there to try and help?" He asks calmly even as the dragon no doubt took a devastating swipe at a section of the city.
