Zyllee waits for an injured target and prepares her spell. Meanwhile, Callan fires a shot at the kenku near the back wall. His bolt slams right into the bird's chest with such force that it pins the creature to the wall five feet behind it. A burst of black feathers lands on the floor where the kenku once stood.
Hugo strings a series of insults at the bird closest to him, but it appears to have no effect on the surprised avian. Zyllee follows up and casts her spell at the same target. The kenku grasps its little feathered head in pain as its eyes begin to bleed. His blood still pumping, Callan fires another bolt at the same distressed kenku. It strikes true in the bird's right shoulder. The kenku drops its shortsword in pain and falls to its knees. Blood is spilling out onto the floor of the warehouse from its wounds.
Finally, Hugo plays a melodic tune similar to a lullaby that puts both the injured, bleeding kenku and one other uninjured kenku sound to sleep. The two fall to the ground as they close their eyes.
The final kenku, having witnessed all three of his allies go down before they were even able to act, stands there dumbfounded with beak agape. This only lasts a moment however, as the terrified bird drops its shortsword and runs away with its hands up. It scurries to the door, opens it, jumps over the fence, and begins making a run for it down Candle Lane.
For the purposes of this, I will say initiative has ended. I assume you all will disarm and tie up the Kenku or something.
After having cast vicious mockery and sleep in a panic, the inexperienced bard sees the last kenku flee down the alleyway. He says "ah, is that bad?" "That's bad, I think" and instinctively uses the last of his major magical reserves to cast sleep on the runner. As it falls he says to his companions "ahhhh, now what?" "Do we tie them up? My magic won't last long, I don't think. I tried it on Durnan the other night and he only fell asleep against the bar for a minute or so. Don't tell him! Um, I'll go tie this one up, I guess!" Hugo rushes off to tie up the most recent victim of his sleep spells. "Can you tie up the others?!"he calls back.
Zyllee stares wide eyed at the horrific scene in front of them. " Callan... you killed it. " She sees all the other corpses and her hair stands up on her arms. Hugo asking for help breaks out of her shock. " Yes.. I have rope. " She moves quickly to the fallen Kenku and ties them up securely. Zyllee makes a great effort to ignore the slain Kenku and the other corpses as she works to restrain them.
The group has no trouble tying up the incapacitated kenku, making sure to disarm them completely if they haven't been already. The kenku eventually wake up after they've been tied up. One of the birds says the following in a deep orc voice, "Xanathar sends its regards."
The same bird looks in a panic to an area behind the stairs. It's voice suddenly changes completely from the deep orc voice to a thin nasally voice as it says, "Tie up the pretty boy in the back room! Follow the yellow signs in the sewers."
The kenku is looking up at the party in fear, while the other two seem agitated. Meanwhile, the party hears ragged breathing coming from a closet near the north end of the room.
Callan looks at the kenku he'd killed, then at his hands. They start to tremble. Happy to think about anything else, he throws himself into the task at hand, helping tie up the unconscious birds.
When they start talking he nods, "Okay, so Xanafar, whoever that is, sent people to kill the men here. Are you with Xanafar, the Zhentarim, or someone else? And I'm going to guess that the pretty boy mentioned is Floon, or maybe the other one who was taken with him. Wait, why is there only mention of one pretty boy?"
Yes the misspelling/mispronounciation of Xanafar is deliberate on my end. I tanked a knowledge check related to him earlier this evening, so...
Talked with Seath, he figures Callan would know off hand about the Kenku's strange speech pattern, which involves mimicry of previously heard voices. He said Zylee and or Hugo can know about it, or not, and RP as preferred.
The kenku replies to Callan in a deep orc voice, "Xanathar sends its regards." Then, in a completely different, scratchy-sounding voice, it says, "No time to loot the place. Just get him to the boss."
The other kenku glare at the talking one. One of the two pecks him.
Hugo does his best to drag the bound kenku that had run outside back in with the others. He looks down at the dead one Callan killed with shock, and at the bodies of their apparent victims lining the walls. "Oh dear." He appears visibly shaken. "We need to go get the city watch, ah, player one, player two" says the bard with a trembling voice. Trying to gather himself, he focuses in the living kenku. "I had heard of their talent of mimicry. Truly amazing. Their talents would better be suited to...ah, never mind." The bard remembers their situation once again and pulls himself back from thoughts on how to employ a kenku actor in a theater performance.
Hearing the breathing from the north end of the room, Hugo slowly starts to tip toe in that direction. "Ah, hello...?" He peers at the door while trying to decide whether or not to open it.
Players as in "a person who plays parts on the stage; an actor." Hugo didn't want to use real names, obviously.
As Hugo approaches the door, he notices that the door itself isn't quite shut completely but is still mostly closed. It hangs loosely and appears to have broken hinges. As he speaks, Hugo gets no response and instead hears more intense breathing and now rustling. There is also a strong smell of sour fish and vinegar coming from the room.
Hugo nervously draws his worn, old rapier and uses it to poke the door open further from as far to the side as he can while muttering something about "where is Simmons when you need him." He then steps back several feet from the wall and then towards the front of the door, peering inside the closet.
When Hugo opens the door, he sees what appears to be a human man in his mid-to-late 30s with wavy red-blonde hair. He is leaned up against the back wall of this storage closet that, judging from the stench, used to store fish. He also appears to have just freed himself from the ropes that he was bound in and currently has his hands up signaling that he is unarmed. The man is handsome, fit, and wearing fine blue clothing befitting a noble, though he is currently marred by grime and the rancid stench of pickled herring.
He stands up straight and corrects his posture. As he speaks, his tone has a certain grace to it, "My name is Renaer Neverember and I'm unarmed. Before you...." he pauses before finishing the sentence. "Wait, you don't look like Zhentarim... Who are you?"
He looks to Hugo and Zyllee with a puzzled expression.
Hugo is ready to give a grand introduction but remembers the situation and his fear of being found later. "Greetings, we are friends" he says quietly, nodding towards the bound kenku for Renaer to see. He steps aside to allow the foul smelling man out of the closet and whispers "do you go by the name Floon, by chance?"
Renaer steps out from the foul closet and witnesses the bound kenku along with all the dead bodies. He nods and says, "I see. So you all have rescued me then, whether intentionally or not. Very well, you have earned my trust for now."
He shakes his head and grimaces as Hugo mentions the name Floon, "No, I am not Floon, sorry. We were chatting with one another at the Skewered Dragon some two nights ago. He had a few too many drinks and I was concerned that he was far too intoxicated to make it home alone, so I offered to escort him. As we began making our way towards his home, we were jumped by five Zhentarim thugs right as we left Fillet Lane."
Renaer looks down with a guilty expression, "To be honest, I believe this is my fault. The Zhentarim probably mistook him for me..." He pauses for a moment, then continues with a more determined expression, "I have to help him, but I have no idea where he was taken. Perhaps there's a clue somewhere in this place. If you are looking for Floon, would you three help me search this place, kind strangers? And what are your names if you don't mind me asking?"
Hugo looks back at the kenku again and whispers to Renaer "You can call me Max, although I don't always look like this." He winks.
"Yes, let's search the place, and, um, the bodies, I suppose. Should someone go get the city watch? These birds did mimic 'get him to the boss' and 'follow the yellow signs in the sewers' as well, although I'm not sure if we're up to that task just yet."
"Max" looks to his companions for their input on getting the city watch to report all of the victims lining the walls of this place, and to take the kenku away. Otherwise he begins searching the bodies for anything of interest including identification and any evidence about the crimes committed here. The poor lad from a rough side of town is also not above pocketing a few valuables to help take care of his mother, as well. All the while Hugo watches the kenku to ensure they are not trying to escape.
Hugo takes a moment to search the bodies for anything of interest including valuables. They don't appear to have any items of real value or any coin for that matter. He does find that they are wearing black leather armor and most of them carry a wide variety of basic weapons, mostly daggers, shortswords, rapiers, and hand axes.
Upon inspecting the corpses of the twelve men for any identification, Hugo notices that five of the men appear to have black tattoos of winged snakes on either their necks or forearms. Meanwhile, one of the other seven men has a black tattoo on the palm of his right hand that looks like a circle with ten spokes radiating out from its circumference.
Renaer also participates in the search, and grabs a rapier and a dagger from one of the men in the process. He doesn't find much more than Hugo, though he does find even more black leather armor, boots, and weapons in a few crates in the room. Once he thinks he's searched enough, he says, "There's an upstairs area here too that we can search. It would be prudent to look around up there for clues as well."
Zyllee looks at the others. " We should search this place first and then discuss about contacting the city watch. I dont like the idea of only one of us going to call the watch. This is a dangerous ward. Maybe we should go in there now to look for him...." She leaves the thought unfinished and heads upstairs. The young cleric searches the upstairs carefully for clues and anything of value.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Callan takes it all in, trying to think. "Okay, let's see if I have this right. So the Zhents nabbed both you and Floon off the street, probably because they wanted you, but not being able to tell you two apart. They dragged you here, only for these people sent by this Xanafar guy to show up, kill the Zhents, and drag Floon off, presumably again because they thought he was you. Probably into the sewers based on what these guys have been saying. Does that sound about right?"
He shakes his head, "Poor guy, if I could find a way to bottle and weaponize his bad luck, it would be very effective. All right, master Ranseur, this doesn't sound like a kidnap for ransom plot, not with both of these groups so heavily involved. Any other reason you can think of that they'd be after you? And while we're at it, any reasons they'd be after Floon in case our assumption of their target is wrong?"
He asks the kenku about it as well, "Was it Ranseur or Floon you were after? And Why?"
In response to Hugo's question, he hesitates, "We certainly need to call the watch about the mess here. But they're definitely not going to go chasing after some random drunk dragged into the sewers. Unless we can enlist some additional help, we're the only chance Floon has. But I have to admit, I don't know, that might be no chance at all, those sewers are no joking matter."
After Zylee is done inspecting the upstairs area, he'll head up to take a look himself, just for the sake of applying fresh eyes to it.
Hugo hesitantly replies "ok, we can go after him if you think we should." Contemplating the whole situation further and thinking of the work in progress that is the character of Maxillian, he perks up and adds "I do know a new local hero who is looking to expand upon his adventures, anyhow!"
"Ah, 'player number two', what should we do about them though?" Hugo signals back at the bound kenku once more.
Replying to Callan, Renaer says, "The Zhentarim think that my father embezzled a large amount of gold while he was Open Lord, and that he hid the dragons somewhere in the city. They think they can find it by using an artifact called the Stone of Golorr, which was in the hands of the Xanathar Guild until recently. Apparently, someone stole it. The Zhents thought I knew something about all of this, but I don’t. My father and I haven’t spoken in years."
"It stands to reason that the Xanathar learned of this as well and attempted to steal me from the Zhentarim for the same reason, to try and learn the whereabouts of this artifact. Floon and I both look somewhat similar, so I believe that's about the extent of poor Floon's involvement. If you three are headed to the sewers, then I'm going with you. I'm no stranger to dangerous adventures and am quite good with a blade."
Meanwhile, the kenku just seem very confused about all this. They don't seem to be very smart.
Zyllee uses her keen eyes to search the upstairs area. She finds many crates filled with all sorts of junk, including moth-eaten bolts of cloth, bottles of spoiled olive oil, and hundreds of pairs of wooden-soled sandals. Hugo would realize that the sandals were all the rage last summer but are now out of fashion. None of this junk seems valuable.
However, Zyllee does find a very fine looking paper bird that catches her eye in what appears to be an office room. She also notes a bell tied to some string that appears to lead somewhere downstairs. Following the string leads her to a wall to the left of the stairs back on the first floor.
Callan helps her find a switch that opens the wall to a secret room. The room contains four wood-framed paintings wrapped in leather. They appear to be very nice paintings of various large cities. There's also a crate filled with fifteen 10-pound silver trade bars, though they are all black from corrosion.
"Oooooh very nice. Very nice indeed!" Hugo continues to pull back the leather and admire the paintings. "I mean, this isn't really my forte, but art is art, right? When you're good, you're good! I don't know many people that would buy this, but I know a fantastic bard who might!" Hugo whispers to Callan "what'ya say we just, ah, close this room back up nice and tight and come back later, yes?" He smiles and winks at the artificer. "I think I could get used to this business after all!"
Hugo listens to Renaer with awe. "Could you say that again? I only heard 'large amount of dragons somewhere in the city!' Kidding, kidding... Wow, what in the nine hells have we gotten into here? Ah well, I think we're dedicated to helping your friend here, at least. So what now?"
Hugo hopes the skilled mimics out in the main room are not listening to all of the details here for fear they will repeat it to anyone they come in contact with and thus tries to keep his voice and that of his companions low.
