”Virtoris the Blue, Capn’. Me father told me to find ye, that you would need me services. Thank ye for giving me a chance, most assured you shall be.” Virt say to the captain and his right and left hands, then he asks quietly, “Capn’, what is is me wages fer me services and skill?”
'The young Captain offers his hand in friendly greeting across the table... which the First Mate and Bosun both frown at dissaprovingly, but Aundrey continues,'
"Why it's the same as for all the officers aboard, except for myself and my two Senior Officers, the good First Mate and Bosun here. I had to ask an old friend of my father's about the Ship's Mage role, since I'm not too familiar with the whole magic thing, but Ship's Mage is a full fledged officer of the ship... though the duties are somewhat unique. We will, of course, hold an officers meeting tomorrow afternoon to iron out such things, but rest assured that your role is a crucial one... again, from what i've been told, err, that is."
'First Mate E'strue smiles and whispers something in the Captain's ear, prompting him to continue,'
"Oh yes, of course, your wages. You and most of other officers will recieve four gold pieces a day, so one hundred and twenty gold a month, to be paid by my two senior officers here upon the first day of the proceeding month or in appropriate and agreed installment upon making landfall."

Hearing the first mate silence the room, Vaken cracks open the kitchen door a bit and listens. When the captain finishes speaking and Vaken realizes that there was no mention of the need for a cook he was saddened. Vergil told him that if he learned to be a cook that he'd be able to find work on a ship. Again Vergil lied to him. As anger boiled up inside of Vaken he slowly pushed the door open and ducked through it.
He walked confidently up to the captain and waited until he was finished speaking with the newly appointed ship's mage. As the mage stepped back Vaken stepped up to the table."Captain, I'm not knowledgeable in any of the areas you mentioned. The closest I come to carpentry is a bit of wood carving. The closest I come to being a mage is a touch of druid magic that lets me predict the weather or talk to a few animals. The rest of the positions I know nothing about. But I'm a hard worker and willing to learn. If, after the first month you don't agree that I'm a good man to have on ship, drop me on the next deserted island you see. Living alone in nature would be better than this...,"Vaken pauses and he looks around the tavern,"civilization. A fair chance is all I ask."
'After she places her order, she turns and leans with both elbows against the bar. She looks around casually and strafes the trio at the table slowly a few times with her eyes appraising them, and trying not to be obvious about it.'
[ooc] Kay is trying to observe any patterns in behavior, locate people of note, and look for potential escape routes.
'Sitting quiet as a mouse at the back of the room, the watching waif notices the brewing tension over near the bar, just as a pair of muscled Wardens enter the common room and grab a table nearby. The larger of the two, a half-orc woman with a mohawk and an silver eyebrow ring, whistles out to Beril for drinks, while the other much younger looking woman, human, with short straw coloured hair and an honest looking face, takes in the Captain's table and those near it.
As Beril brings the two Wardens drinks, giving the half-orc what appears to be a welcome kiss on the forehead, the quiet young woman in the shadows notices the handsome fellow with the viol case at his side trying to calm a group of increasingly aggitated toughs over at the bar.
Most noticably, however, are the next two individuals who step forward to apply for officer roles aboard the Shark.'
"Ahem! So you say you are in need of a Quarter Master? Well it just so happens that the perfect candidate stands right before you! Daegrin's the name and procuring things is my game, at knock down prices and in timely fashion, without fail I might, and will, add. Worked out of Luskan for most of my life, I have, as Quarter Master for eleven years aboard the merchant cog the unlucky Wench. To clarify, the ship was called The Wench, but she was undoubtedly unlucky to fun afoul of the freak storm that sadly sank her South of The Pins. Before that, I was warehouse foreman for a number of merchant costers in the City of Sails. Mark my words - if you are in need of something that's hard to find or needed in a hurry, then you'll be wanting Daegrin here to be doing the finding for you!
'The weasely faced little halfling man, who has a rather unpleasant pinched face and wire-rimmed spectacles perched on his too-big nose, is invited forward to the table and after a brief back-and-forth between himself and the officers, puts quill to parchment.
Not long afterwards, the inn door is booted open, slaming into the wall with a resounding *CRASH*! A hulking, though somewhat hunched, man covered in seal furs, with pale skin and a thick walrus-like mustache strides into the room and seeing the table in its centre, storms up to it as though ready to attack. The large man wears a horned iron helmet atop his head and has a worn handled, much notched battle axe at his belt. He reaches down towards it with his one remaining hand, the other arm ending in a vicious looking iron hook, but as sailors all about the room reach towards their own weapons, the gnarled warrior instead pulls out a crude brown ceramic jug and quaffs what remains inside, before flinging the jug to *SMASH* against a wall thirty feet away. Following an almight belch that almost echos through the room, he eventually growls out,'
"I'm Unne Ironhand. I'm the new pilot of the Shore Shark. If ye have no one stronger, which you don't, then I'm your Battle Master as well. Unless anyone here would like to challenge me for the job?"

'The entire room appears poised on a knife edge as the intimidating Northman stares down the three officers at the hiring table, before Drannick's roaring laughter fills the room and the Dwarven Bosun quaffs his own ale, then chortles,'
"I LIKE this one! You may ignore my other remarks and suggestions, Captain, though I surely wish that ye wouldn't, but by the ***** Queen's kelptangled nether-regions, this here is a man I'd like beside me in a scrap!"
'The First Mate whispers something in the Captain's ear, to which the young man reluctantly nods. The Bosun then indicates that Unne should sign the ship's charter, which he promptly does by slicing a thumb on his own axe and pushing the bloody digit onto the parchment.
As things begin to quieten down a bit, the large cook approaches the Captain's table and makes a sincere pitch to be allowed to become the ship's cook. The kindly Captain looks moved by the simple eloquence of the goliath's plea and seems predisposed to grant the request, but the Bosun pipes up in the negative,'
"Sorry I am to say it, Captain, but we already agreed to let that red headed sailor who signed on earlier act as cook. It wouldn't be right to go back on what's already been agreed upon!"
'The dwarven innkeeps short, harsh bark of laughter carries from behind the bar... until the First Mate, studying the large but unassuming cook, *SLAMS* her own hand down on the table and with a grin that brooks no argument, calls out,'
"You got your way with the mad Northman, Drannick, and he'll probably leave us all dead on a barren rock somewhere if we're daft enough to let him near the wheel. I'm making the call on this one... with the Captain's permission of course. Besides, did you have a good look at that blood-topped deck hand? He had more dirt under his nails than on his shirt... at least you'd hope that it was dirt.
'At a pleased nod from the Captain and accompanying grumble from the Bosun, the First Mate waves the goliath forward towards the charter, whispering,'
"Now see that I don't regret this here decision... for both of our sakes. And for the record, the dwarf would eat his own mother with enough salt, the Captain is partial to sea food and I'll eat just about anything so long as none of it's green and there's a form of dead animal involved."

As the Bosun's words reach him, Vaken's heart starts to drop. Then he hears Vergils laughter and his face hardens in anger, but as he turns to face the dwarf the first mate gets his attention back. He steps forward at the captain's motioning and listens to the first mate's words. A smile breaks out on his face as he signs his name on the charter. "Thank you. Thank you all. I will not let you down."
As he turns to go he sees Unne staring at him. Vaken, still smiling nods his head toward the man,"I look forward to working with you."
Vaken then walks over to Vergil and calmly says,"I appears that this is my last night as your cook. I expect my pay before I leave."And with that Vaken walks back into the kitchen happier than he had been in several months.

'As the pinch-faced halfling and the perpetually scowling Northman move to a side table, the three officers study the charter on the table for a moment before conferring in hushed tones. They seem somewhat concerned with something they see... or dont' see. Glancing up in unison to look about the room, all three of them spot the seemingly timid young woman caught halfway between the outer tables and the hiring table. The First Mate and Bosun give her a brief once over before their gazes return to studying the other occupants in the room. The Captain, however, smiles and beckons her forward towards their table, saying in an unmistakenly friendly voice,'
"Hello there. Are you here to sign aboard to crew the Shore Shark? As a deck hand or sail monkey, perhaps? We still have a few general sailor births open, though they'll not last long..."
'The Captain's voice trails off in confusion at the look of uncertainty and near dread on the young woman's face.'

However, as the large shadow of the goliath falls across his table he glances up and favours Vaken with a narrowing of his already narrow gaze and a smile that looks more challenging sneer than anything else.
Moving back behind the bar towards the door that leads back to the inn's kitchen, the goliath hands in his resignation and requests his wages owed before turning to walk away from Vergil in dignified triumph, but the clearly fuming dwarf shouts at him,'
"Bah! Ya fink yo be doin beta abored dat ship! Yer be jokin', rit? Day be makin spurt o'ye, ya durn foal! Mor'n like yo be used as shirrk bat! An' me dunnit ow' yer nufin! Bord'n'login be wurf mor'n yer pitful wurk! Hahahaha!!!"

Vaken hears the dwarf hollerin at him as he walks back into the kitchen and starts to wonder. What if Vergil's right? The thought causes his stomach to churn. I better get back to work just in case, he thinks. That way maybe Vergil will let me stay if I need to.

'The Captain nods encouragingly as Kay mentions her interest in joining the crew and her swiftness of foot, but her moment of all-too-brief hope is stolen by the gruff Bosun's laugh when she mentions her skill with a blade. First Mate E'strue's gaze hardens as she looks down at Drannick to quieten the now drunk dwarf... but the damage is done.
Accompanying laughter rises around the common room, first and loudest from the Northman Unne, but then from a number of mostly male sailors, including the nearby dreadlocked islander who Beril had been scolding earlier and Gaut and his five drinking buddies at the bar, though Nubrel appears to have fallen asleep, loudly snoring head craddled in his crossed arms atop the bar. Lastly the dwarven innkeep's harsh chuckles carry to the already hesitant woman, Vergil's voice clearly heard above the din of rough-edged-mirth,'
"Her dat? Dat gil is guna pradect yas oll. Ha! Bwahahahaha!!! Mit be ya shud mek 'er ye wepins masda! Hahaha! Or mebe ye cap'n! Bwahahahaha!!!"
'The First Mate slaps the back of the quietly chuckling Bosun's head, before she takes the Captain's arm and mutters something to her superior. Kay, however, loses sight of the table as the group of laughing toughs who were drinking with Nubrel stride towards the genasi's table, led by the still angry Gaut and the swaggering muscle bound man. Whispers can be heard around the bar as the six figures come to stand around A'ro and his tatooed companion. Gaut says in a dangerously low voice that doesn't carry beyond the group at the table,'

'As he says the word whoring he glances across with a leer at Unawalyn, while the biggest of the group leans down over A'ro's chair and whispers in his ear with almost gleeful anticipation and a nod towards Unawalyn,'
"Now listen good, windman. We're going to hurt you pretty bad right now... but we'll let you live if you don't try any of your stupid magic tricks. And don't you worry, we'll keep your interesting friend here good company."

As the mage stepped back Vaken stepped up to the table. "Captain, I'm not knowledgeable in any of the areas you mentioned. Living alone in nature would be better than this...," Vaken pauses and he looks around the tavern, "civilization. A fair chance is all I ask."

'Kay, seeing a lull in the applicants stands and stands, approaching the captains table as the door comes crashing open. She flinches reflexively at the noise and then turns, wide eyed, just in time to see the gnarled warrior smash a perfectly good jug against the wall. She flinches again at the smashing noise, and her orange eyes go even wider as she realizes that she happens to be standing in the middle of the room, between Unne and the captain's table.'
'The air is still and silent for a moment. She nervously swallows, and it's almost audible in the awkward silence.'
[ooc] Kay sees and opening and was going to see if she could talk her way into being a Cabin Boy or some other low position that she could train in as she has no experience, but suddenly finding herself between the angry fellow and his quarry she is partially paralyzed, not sure if she should run, or simply let the large man pass.

Vaken, still smiling nods his head toward the man, "I look forward to working with you."
Vaken then walks over to Vergil and calmly says, "I appears that this is my last night as your cook. I expect my pay before I leave." And with that Vaken walks back into the kitchen happier than he had been in several months.

'Kay, let's out an enormous sigh as she realizes that the large man is not going to murder her (yet?). Her orange eyes flit about the room nervously, she's clearly uncomfortable with the amount of attention that is focused on her, however much it might be.'
'She clears her throat before speaking, and her voice is soft.'
"Greetings Captain Aundry and... officers. I have only little sailing experience but would most appreciate the opportunity to be a part of the crew. I... I'm a good runner and a fair hand with a blade..."
'She looks lost in thought for a moment, and opens her mouth to speak again, but quails and throws her hands up not finding more to say. Her shoulders hunch slightly and her hands fall on her too large pants, deflating them, a look of defeat in her bright orange eyes.'

'The Northman appears to be having his ear pissed in by the ship's new Quarter Master while trying to grab the too-elusive Lorana about the waist.

[OOC] A'ro, Unawalyn and any other PC with a perception check (or passive) of 15 or more may read the spoiler:
"So you thought ya were real smart using ya magic to try to embarrass me like that, didn't ya? Well I got a little advice for ya', bluey - when ya' ain't with ya own kind, best ya keep ya head down low like a good little freak and leave the working, drinking and whoring to real men!"

'Kay doesn't know if she's ever screwed her eyes shut this tightly before. Sightless, the humiliating sound of laughter carries to her... as do other sounds within the common room.
She hears the mean dwarven innkeep shouting something demeaning to the large cook in a room out back.
She hears the half-orc twenty feet away telling someone to keep cool and do nothing unless weapons are drawn.
She hears the First Mate's voice tell the Captain something about needing to harden his heart to the world if they're going to achieve their goal.
And nearby, at the next table barely ten feet away, she hears two cruel male voices, voices that were laughing at her expense only moments before, threatening an innocent man and woman.'

'The six men sneer at the slimmer, less brawny Kestrell. Gaut reaches out to push the now slumbering Nubrel from the bar onto the floor, while the beefiest of the men shoulder's past the bard, leading his now exceedingly drunk companions directly towards the genasi's table.

'It takes a moment for the incredulous toughs to realise that this diminutive girl is talking to THEM that way, but they just laugh her words off... until the ball bearing she throws hits Gaut's with a *CRACK* right between the eyes. The man's eyes cross comically for a moment, before his vision returns with deadly accuracy to fixate on the slight woman standing before him with weapons drawn. A thin trickle of blood runs down his forehead from where the impromptu missle struck.
Three of the other men turn to stand at Gaut's back with disbelieving looks on their faces. Gaut snarls in barely controlled fury and spits out,'
"Ohhh... THAT was a BIG mistake, girl. We was just going to mess him up a little and have a bit of fun with the lass, but now... now the marks we're going to give ya will be more... lasting."
'Standing ten feet away from Kay, in a line between her and A'ro's table, Gaut draws a large serrated hunters knife (more of a short sword really) from his belt, which the three behind him take as a cue to pull their own weapons free. All three are armed with daggers and all four begin to advance towards Kay with cruel looks upon their faces, laughin hard, ugly laughs at her timidly delivered threat.
Kay, her senses still attuned to the rest of the room despite the now insane situation unfolding in front of her, and while she mostly hears the scrape of chairs being pulled away from her direction, she also hears a familiar deep woman's voice say,'
****! Okay... NOW run and bring a few of the others!"
